The Charity of The Month for February is: Girls on the Run of Long Island www.gotrlongisland.org Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.
They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. This organization also runs a program called Heart & Sole. This is their middle school program that meets the unique needs of girls in 6th-8th grade. Heart & Sole takes girls as a whole into consideration body, brain, heart, spirit and social connection - in a positive and structured space, where participants can learn about themselves, explore new ideas, cultivate empathy and stregthen connections. Running is incorporated into each lesson to encourage physical wellness. These girls also prepare for a celebratory 5K event at the end of the program. The upcoming spring season
for both programs will begin the week of March 16th and is shaping up to be their largest season yet! How you can get involved: If you or someone you know would like to register for their spring program, you can! Registration is now open and runs through February 27th. Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta is participating in Long Island Cares’ ninth annual Legislative Food Drive Challenge to collect pet food for the clients of Long Island Cares. Since 2009, Long Island Cares has provided free pet food and supplies to individuals and families in need, in an effort to enable them to keep their pets at home instead of placing them in shelters.
Legislator Trotta pointed out that, according to Long Island Cares, dog and cat food are the most requested items by their member agencies. “Pets keep many people going, giving them comfort and a reason to survive in difficult times so I am asking the kind and generous residents and pet lovers in my district to help out. Last year we collected over 1,000 pounds of pet food,” said Legislator Trotta. “
The pet pantry is in need of canned and dry cat/ dog food, cat/dog treats, birdseed, and food for fish, rabbits, and ferrets, as well as kitty litter and small new toys. The drive is from now until April 1. Donations may be dropped off, Monday through Friday, from 9am - 4pm, at Legislator Trotta’s office, 59 Landing Avenue, Suite 1, Smithtown. Daylight Saving Time March 8 Most parts of North America will begin Daylight Saving Time on March 8, 2020, at 2:00 a.m., respective to their time zones. In the European Union, “Summer Time” begins at 1:00 a.m. on the last Sunday in March, which this year will be March 29. The change is made at the same absolute time across all time zones respective to Greenwich Mean Time, which also is known as Universal Time.
One reason DST is still practiced in many areas of the world is to push an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening and make better use of this daylight. There are various origin stories linked to DST, including one that involves Benjamin Franklin. DST also has been touted as a way to save resources during times of war or as a means to helping farmers be more prosperous. However, despite the many
proclaimed benefits of DST, there are many detractors who insist that there are no perceived benefits. Some of these DST naysayers say switching the clocks twice a year can negatively affect the body’s natural circadian rhythm. Various efforts both domestically and abroad have been instituted to abolish DST, but as of 2020, it remains on the calendar.

Islip Supervisor Angie Carpenter and members of the Town Board, celebrated Black History Month at the February Town Board meeting, by recognizing residents who contribute to their community through volunteerism or their professions. Town officials honored Suffolk County Police Officer, Brandon Bell of the
3rd Precinct in Bay Shore. Officer Bell joined the Suffolk County Police Department in 2006, and has been with the 3rd precinct ever since. He has served on patrol in the department’s Community Support Unit and is currently an investigator in the precinct’s Crime Section. Officer Bell is a quiet
professional, who has earned the respect of both his colleagues and his supervisors. “He is a dedicated employee who has made many contributions to his community, and who is worthy of recognition by the Town,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter.

East Islip Robotics Team Takes On “Tower Takeover” At Adelphi East Islip High School’s robotics class participated in an outside event for the first time on Jan. 18, competing at Adelphi University’s seventh annual “Tower Takeover” VEX Robotics Competition qualifier. School robotics teams design, build and program robots for the VRC tournaments, then enter qualifying matches where two pairs of allied teams face off. In “Tower Takeover,” the object of the game is to attain a higher score than the opposing alliance by stacking cubes in goals and placing cubes in towers. East Islip’s students were at the top of their game at Adelphi, far exceeding expectations for a rookie robotics team, finishing 5-2-1 in the qualifying matches and ranking eighth out of 44 teams
at the end of preliminary competition. They lost in the quarterfinal round of the playoffs but earned one of their highest scores of the day. Comprised of some of the best and brightest young robotics engineers East Islip has to offer, the team was led by senior Sophia Bates, the captain and lead designer. Junior Kyle Kirschberg drove the robot for the duration, supported by other team members including Mike Baldino, Zoe Elder, Cody Knott, Jake Riordan, Jordan Quillan, Damon Swinson, Jake Thomsett and Pranaav Venkatasubramaniam. “I am very passionate about robotics and I am glad we got the chance to experience this competition outside of school,” said Bates. “It’s very validating to design
and create a robot inside a classroom and see it compete at a very high level against other schools and similar robotics programs.” “I loved driving the robot during the competition, having my team support me throughout the day by maintaining the robotic components and scouting other teams so that I went into each match prepared,” said Kirschberg. “I couldn’t have been prouder of this team,” said robotics teacher James Connell. “Everyone had a specific job on the day of the event and each job was instrumental to the team’s success. Partnership Will Provide Complimentary Rooms For Cancer Patients Treated Away from Home Cancer patients traveling far from home for treatment across Long Island and in Queens need not worry where to stay during their care due to a new partnership agreement between the American Cancer Society, Courtyard Marriott and Springhill Suites. If you’re a cancer patient and your doctor says, “Your best hope for a cure is in another town,” your first thought may be, “Where am I going to stay and how am I going to pay for it?” The American Cancer Society can help. The Society works together with hotels through its Hotel Partners Program to provide complimentary and/or reduced rate rooms to cancer patients who need to travel out of town to receive treatment. One hotel in Jamaica, NY and another in Ronkonkoma, NY, have joined the Society’s Hotel Partners Program, providing complimentary rooms to cancer patients who must travel across Long Island for treatment. YOUNG PHILANTHROPIST HONORED - Supervisor Angie Carpenter and members of the Islip Town Board, honored 8-year-old Ava McKiernan of East Islip at the February Town Board meeting for her Wreath’s of Joy wreath sale this past holiday season. The wreaths were sold to benefit St. Jude’s Children Hospital. Ava was inspired to create wreaths to sell within her community after seeing the St. Jude’s commercials on TV. Ava made and sold a total of 41 wreaths. Together with donations, she raised $800 for the sick children at St. Jude’s. “Ava is truly an inspiration, and an example of what it means to be a role model,” said Supervisor Angie Carpenter. Ava said she plans to continue to donate to St. Jude’s through her wreath sale each holiday season.

Benefit Performance Raises $7,000
Too Much Sleep Can Be Harmful
Dance Connection of Islip presented their 4th Annual Making Wishes Grow, a performance benefit to assist Make-AWish of Suffolk County, NY in granting the wishes of local children. The performance at Holy Trinity Diocesan High School in Hicksville on Sunday, January 19th raised money that will help to grant the wish of Katherine, a 16-year-old Islip Town resident whose wish is to go to Disney World with her family. The performance featured Create Dance Center, the Dance Connection
Performance Team, JAM Dance & Fitness, Trinity Dance Company, and comedy by Kyle Kratzke. All net proceeds will be donated to Make-A-Wish of Suffolk County. “This performance never fails to leave both our audience and our performers with a smile, and our dancers are able to get a sense of how their love of dance can help to enrich the lives of others and to give back to the community that they live in. Lack of sufficient sleep is a problem for millions of people across the globe. But what about too much sleep? Though busy men and women might think it’s impossible to get too much sleep, excessive sleep is nothing to joke about. According to the National Sleep Foundation, most adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep per night (the NSF notes that a small percentage of people may need 10 hours of sleep per night). People who routinely sleep more than seven to nine hours may have an underlying health concern. For example, the NSF notes that a recent study found that routinely sleeping more than 10 hours per night can be linked to metabolic syndrome. The Mayo Clinic says metabolic syndrome refers to a cluster of conditions that occur together and increase a person’s risk for serious health issues, including heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. Obesity, headache and back pain are some
additional potential side effects of excessive sleep. The Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School notes that genetics and age are significant factors in determining the amount of sleep healthy individuals need. However, young adults should resist the notion that they need less than seven hours of sleep per night because they’re young, while older adults should similarly avoid thinking that they need more sleep simply because they’re aging. As the NSF guidelines suggest, the sweet spot for healthy adults is typically between seven and nine hours of sleep per night. A good night’s rest is an essential component of a healthy lifestyle. But adults must recognize that excessive amounts of sleep can be just as detrimental as inadequate sleep. Individuals can speak with their physicians to determine their specific sleep needs.

It may be tempting to curl up on the couch and turn on the television to unwind, but research indicates that reading is one of the best workouts for the brain. The World Health Organization says that doctors diagnose nearly 10 million new cases of dementia each year. It may be as simple as picking up a book. When this part of the brain processes written material, neurons begin working hard to transmit information. Research conducted by Stanford University indicated that MRI scans of people who are deep into a Jane Austen novel showed an increase in blood flowing to areas of the brain that control both cognitive
and executive function. When the brain is working efficiently, it may be less prone to some of the issues that can cause a decline in memory and brain function. Research published in the journal Neurology found frequent brain exercise through reading lowered mental decline by 32 percent. Of course, the benefits of reading extend beyond the physical. Literary fiction can help people be more empathetic. Getting lost in a book and the characters’ stories makes others more relatable. Reading has the potential to help a person understand what people are thinking, offers research published in the journal Science. Picking up a good book also can help a person gain knowledge of new cultures, ideas and history and even improve vocabulary. Picking up a newspaper or magazine, joining a book club or reading with children are just a few of the many ways to improve the mind through reading.

Four East Islip Senior Artists Selected For Go APE East Islip High School seniors Hailee Cornell, Alyssa Huss, Jessica Montijo and Leah Neville were chosen for the Art League of Long Island’s 13th annual Go APE Advanced Placement Exhibition, which highlights outstanding work by art students from across Long Island. Displayed at the Art League’s Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery in Dix Hills, the show will run through March 1. The four students, all enrolled in Daniel Figliozzi’s AP Art and Design classes, will attend a closing artists’ reception and awards presentation on March 1. “These extremely talented students are four of the most hardworking and committed artists I’ve ever met,” Figliozzi said. “Each has a unique vision and demonstrates a variety of strong technical abilities in their chosen craft, and I have no doubt they will all pursue creative pathways in their future. I’m excited for them to exhibit with some of the most talented student-artists on Long Island and proud to see them showcase their work to a larger community.” Cornell plans to attend Alfred University’s School of Art and Design this fall. She has been awarded their highest merit scholarship, the Art Portfolio Scholarship, a renewable award of $14,000 for up to four years, and was also recognized as a Miller Portfolio Scholar, a $5,000 annual award recognizing an elite
group of talented artists. Hailee will begin Alfred’s intense Foundations program this fall, which will allow her to broaden her already successful art practice. Cornell’s Go APE piece, “Peanut Butter and Caramel,” is a photorealistic colored pencil drawing, part of a body of artwork that showcases traditionally executed portraits that have been obstructed by various textures and materials. Huss is a skilled illustrator, character designer, draftswoman, sculptor and painter. She plans to work for her uncle’s Los Angeles production company, Molecule Productions, after graduation, using her multiple creative talents to help with set design, fashion and makeup for a horror movie he is producing. “Release II,” her Go APE selection, is a large-scale mixed media piece that explores tension and release through selfportraiture. Montijo has shown a strong sense of design and the ability to master any medium. As a junior, she explored digital manipulation of nature photography in AP 2D Design. This year, she has delved into various traditional and unconventional painting techniques, including making her own natural pigments. Montijo is creating sustainable architecture structures for her AP Drawing exam

depicts a daydreaming young girl floating over the light of the moon. Vibrant in color and whimsically rendered, it demonstrates Neville’s ability to create imaginative environments and worlds to explore.
Preparing For Lent And Easter The Christian tradition of Lent is celebrated across the globe by many different denominations of the faith. Lent is a 40-day period of sacrifice that begins on Ash Wednesday and culminates with the celebration of the resurrection of Jesus Christ on Easter Sunday. Lent is designed to help Christians prepare for Easter through prayer, repentance of sins, almsgiving, denying the ego, and putting and end to sinful practices. Fasting is a component of Lent, as is abstinence from certain behaviors. In fact, in some Western countries, Catholics have been encouraged to adopt forms of abstinence that do not involve food and drink during Lent. All actions
serve as forms of self-denial to mirror the sacrifice Jesus Christ made for his people. Abstaining from alcohol is not mandatory during Lent. That might be traced to ancient times, when wine and other forms of alcohol were safer to drink than pathogen-filled water sources. But many people now choose to give up alcohol for Lent. Today, fasting is primarily reserved for Ash Wednesday and Fridays during Lent, including Good Friday. Adherents may opt to fully fast, but most only eschew meat and poultry as a nod to self-denial, opting for seafood and vegetarian fare instead.
While much focus is placed on what is denied during Lent, it can be an ideal time to reflect on what is gained by living a life in which God is first and foremost. Spending more time in prayer and away from trivial distractions can be a way to live a more faithful life during Lent and beyond. In addition, aspiring to be more Christ-like during Lent can make this special season even more powerful. During Lent, Christians can make a concerted effort to help the poor, work with a charity or volunteer at their church. Lent is a solemn time, but one that can bolster one’s faith.

Let Them Dunk Sometimes it’s OK to let your kids play with their
food, especially when they are getting extra nutrition. Try packing one of these fun dunks with dippers: ·Apple and pear slices to dip into low-fat plain yogurt or peanut butter. Cortland, Empire and Ginger Gold apples brown at a slower rate than other apples. · Carrot, celery and sweet pepper strips to dip into hummus, fresh salsa or homemade bean dip. ·Whole-grain, lowsodium, low-fat crackers* or slices of grilled tofu (a soybean product) to dunk into soup. Avoid packing sugary drinks like “power” drinks, soda, or sugar-added juices to your kids’ lunchboxes, or home meals. Water or school purchased milk are great options to reduce sugar in the diet. Let the crunchy snacks be fruit or cut veggies, not fried, fatty chips. Get Them Involved When kids help pack their lunches, they’re more likely to eat that lunch! On nights you have a bit more time, like a Sunday night, have them choose which piece of fruit or what type of whole grain bread they want and let them assemble their lunch. With a recent uptick in the number of reported phone scam attempts, PSEG Long Island again urges residents and business owners to make themselves aware of the tactics scammers use to try to steal their money. Phone scammers have become more prolific and sophisticated in recent years. In many cases, the scammers can modify their caller ID to read “PSEG Long Island.” More than 6,600 calls were reported to PSEG Long Island in 2019, up from 4,088 scam calls reported in 2018. While recent weeks have seen an increase in the number of scam calls, PSEG Long Island’s awareness campaigns appear to have made customers more alert. In 2015, 8.2% of the total number of reported calls resulted in customers losing their money. Since 2018, that number is down to 5%. “Phone scammers want their targets to panic so they don’t think clearly. If you receive a call about a pastdue bill, don’t panic. Look for signs that it may not be legitimate, such as a request for a specific payment type or an imminent threat of disconnection,” said Rick Walden, vice president of customer operations, PSEG Long Island. “Our representatives will never demand immediate payment and, though we offer a variety of payment options, they do not include prepaid debit cards or bitcoin. Additionally, if a customer is scheduled for disconnection due to nonpayment, they
will receive written notice on their bill at least 10 days in advance.” What to look out for You receive a call from what looks like PSEG Long Island on your caller ID. The caller threatens to shut off your service and demands an immediate payment by pre-paid card, wire transfer or bitcoin. The caller informs you that you require a new meter and demands a deposit before the installation can occur. You’re given a phone number to call back that, when called, may sound similar to PSEG Long Island’s automated call system. PSEG Long Island will never ask for a pre-paid card, wire transfer or bitcoin. Scammers ask for them because they are untraceable. What to do Hang up. Do not provide any personal or account information. Call PSEG Long Island at 1-800-490-0025. Never call any number the scammer gives you. What PSEG Long Island will and won’t discuss over the phone A genuine PSEG Long Island representative will ask to speak to the Customer of Record. If that person is available, the representative will explain why they are calling and provide the account name, address and current balance. If the Customer of Record is not available, the PSEG Long Island representative will not discuss the account
at all and ask that a message be left for the Customer of Record to call 1-800-4900025. PSEG Long Island also cautions customers to beware of scam emails that appear to be bills from the utility. These emails request personal information that could lead to identity theft. PSEG Long Island does not ask customers to provide personal information online without first logging into the My Account section of www. psegliny.com. Never provide any personal information requested by email. Do not download any attachments, and do not click on any links in the email. Instead, open a browser window, visit www. psegliny.com and log into My Account to get accurate account information, or call PSEG Long Island customer service. Any customer who has doubts about the legitimacy of a call or email — especially one in which payment is requested — should call the PSEG Long Island directly at 1-800-490-0025 or visit a PSEG Long Island Customer Service Center. Seniors and people with existing medical conditions should always discuss their diets with their physicians, asking if there are specific foods they should avoid or seek out.
