Suffolk County Community College last hosted the regional championships in 1995. “This is a tremendous opportunity for local basketball fans and the community to watch talented junior college athletes in action,” said Suffolk County Community College Athletic Director and Women’s Basketball Coach Kevin Foley. “And while they’re here for the games, they can see all that Suffolk has to offer: 22 different competitive teams in 14 sports,” Foley said. Foley added that both Suffolk men’s and women’s basketball teams are competing in the tournament. “Suffolk County Community College is delighted to welcome the NJCAA Region XV Men’s and Women’s Basketball Championships,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay. “Intercollegiate competition is an integral part of our educational experience and we look forward to welcoming the athletes, their coaches and familes to our College. We are also very proud to to webcast the games utilizing the expertise and talents of our Radio and Television Production Department here at the College,” McKay said. All games will be
webcast via Sharks TV in association with the Radio and Television Production program of Suffolk County Community College utilizing six cameras and four replay angles. Celebrity Chef Event In celebration of 35 years of service to the community in providing diabetes education and support to individuals with diabetes and their families, Winthrop-University Hospital’s Diabetes Education Center will host an interactive night of food, fun and fine dining with Celebrity Chef Tom Schaudel. The event, which will feature a cooking
demonstration along with a delicious three-course meal, will take place on Monday, March 10th, at 6:30 p.m. at Jewel, located in The Atrium Room, at 400 Broadhollow Rd. in Melville. “Thirty-five years of service to our community is certainly a momentous milestone for Winthrop’s Diabetes Education Center,” said Lynne

CIRCUS FUN! - Last month, Bay Shore’s Gardiner Manor School held its 14th Annual Circus. Each year, the Gardiner Manor Circus proudly features every 5th grader in this one of a kind show. Students sign up to be clowns, stilt walkers, unicycle riders, devil stickers, diabolos, pep squad dancers, jugglers, jump ropers, plate spinners, acrobats or part of the backstage crew. This year’s show was simply outstanding and ended with the entire 5th grade class singing the Gardiner Manor song, written by Music teacher Josh Kant.

Random Thoughts The East Islip Middle School Student Government and adviser Dawn Zeffiro hosted the Hoops For The Troops Charity Basketball Tournament on January 17th. More than 130 students participated in the event, which supported the school’s Builders Club’s ongoing efforts to provide weekly care packages for overseas members of the U.S. armed forces. The entrance fee was one item to send to the troops, and more than 500 items were collected for the donation boxes.
Assemblyman Joseph Saladino kicked off the evening by introducing three U.S. Marine Corps veterans – Ciro Chicarelli, Larry Gruttemeyer and Carmine Raineri – from the American Legion Hall in Babylon and Marine Corps Detachment League in Bay Shore. Middle school basketball coach and teacher Chris Padgur acted as master of ceremonies. “The event was a huge success thanks to Chris,” said Zeffiro. “He worked tirelessly with the student government to plan everything.” Christopher Siatta, a
student at East Islip High School, served as a guest DJ throughout the evening, playing motivational songs and narrating the basketball plays. “Chris donated his time and talent to make the event even more enjoyable,” said Zeffiro. Try attempting to slow down as your headlights catch a glimpse of the crater before you, just waiting to devour a tire or two. One more time – is it spring yet? At least spring training has finally arrived, and with it the not entirely unexpected announcement
from Yankee shortstop Derek Jeter that this season will be his final year playing baseball. A class act until the end, Jeter took to his Facebook page to write a heartfelt message of thanks and appreciation to his fans, his teammates, his family and friends. He will leave the Yankees at the top of his game, a surefire first-ballot Hall of Famer with a legacy the likes of which will not be seen again. Speaking of, remember all those long lost friends you thought you would never see again? Well, thanks to social networking, virtual reunions have become fairly
common. Sure, there’s plenty of useless material to navigate through; but if you learn to utilize these sites properly, the odds of reconnecting with someone are pretty likely. Everything in moderation, right? That’s the mentality you need to adopt for spring – moderation – with diet, exercise, everything. Those bathing suits that have been cropping up in every department store? They’re not going away anytime soon. Better crawl out of that winter state of hibernation and greet the brand new season right around the corner… it’s just over the horizon, past the potholes.

Over the last several weeks, new and used jeans were collected and dropped off at various donation sites throughout the Town, including the Islip Youth Bureau, Legislator Cilmi’s Office, the Keep Islip Clean office, and Islip, Sachem East, Hauppauge, Central Islip, Sayville, Bayport-
Blue Point and West Islip High Schools. In total, more than 1,400 pairs of jeans were collected, and later sorted by a team of staff and volunteers. The Teens for Jeans program was established seven years ago and has been successful in collecting more than 3.5 million pairs of jeans that have benefitted those in need.
Michael Watts, a senior at Islip High School, has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Stony Brook University on a full tuition scholarship. As a member of the Division I Stony Brook Seawolves, Michael will run for the track and field and crosscountry teams. A year-round distance runner, Michael is a member of the crosscountry and winter and spring track and field teams at Islip, where he runs the one-mile, twomile, three-mile and 5k. During his running career as a Buccaneer, Michael has been named All-Eastern, All-State, AllDivision and has been a national qualifier in track
and field. He is the first runner in the seven-year history of the Islip winter track team to qualify for states. “Michael is a quality student and athlete,” said cross-country coach Marc Rosado. “He is a very dedicated runner and

minute. South Country’s 4th grade winners, Mia Grassia and Myles Rabin, moved on to compete in the finals at West Islip High School on February 22nd against other Suffolk County schools. Genna Sarraga, who accumulated the most points of any SCS 4th grader, was unable to represent the school as she was on vacation during the
finals. South Country’s 5th grade winners were Nayari Hester and Tayron Bangs. The overall winners will receive medals, shirts and a commemorative certificate. As in all Physical Education endeavors, South Country students excel and strive for good health and wellness!
America’s Boating Course will be offered this Spring at Brookwood Hall, 50 Irish Lane in East Islip, beginning weekly, on Thursday, March 13th, 2014, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. by the United States Power Squadron – America’s Boating Club. This course will cover the following topics: You Are The Skipper – What Would You Do?, Boat
Terms And Types, Aids To Navigation, Boat Handling, Navigational Rules, Adverse Conditions And Emergencies, U.S. And New York State Regulations, Boat Trailering, Personal Water Craft and Piloting. Successful completion of this course provides New York State Certification for Personal Water Craft Operation. The instruction given in America’s Boating Course is the best way to learn the basics of safe boating, for new, as well as experienced boaters. Sign up for the course, whether you own a power, sail boat, or Personal Watercraft, are thinking about buying one, or enjoy boating with friends. This is a perfect time to take the course – before this next boating season. Congratulations to Bay Shore High School Senior Ryan Mazzie on being selected by ESPN as their December honoree and one of only five MVP Finalists for their $5,000 scholarship prize. Ryan is the quintessential student athlete, excelling both on the athletic field and in the classroom where he boasts a 101.55 GPA, is ranked 4th in his class of 417 students, and is an International Baccalaureate Diploma Candidate. In 9th grade, Ryan also donated his bone marrow to help save his younger sister, Melina, who was battling a rare form of aplastic anemia. In Ryan’s first Varsity football game, he threw six touchdown passes, breaking an 86-year-old

The week of January 26th, Saint Patrick School celebrated Catholic Schools Week. The theme for the National Catholic Schools week 2014 is “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.” Throughout the week, Saint Patrick School
conducted a variety of special events and activities. The week started off with a family mass and open house on Sunday, January 25th. All were welcome to come visit the school and meet the faculty and staff. Some of the highlights of the week were the teachers
SHARING ART - Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron recently attended the 4th Annual Scholarship Fundraiser for the Women Sharing Art group, a locally-based non-profit that fosters the local women’s artistic community. Every year the group awards two scholarships to deserving high school seniors. This year the winners vs. 7th and 8th grade were Elizabeth Galian of Bayport-Blue Point High School and Daniella Gallego of volleyball game, the Space Brentwood High School. Dome, pajama and movie day, western day, 7th and 8th grade science fair, and to end the week the teachers hosted the school mass on Friday, January 31st.

On that day, DiPalma encourages people, especially students, to wear purple, to show their support against bullying and identifying and combating depression, with the ultimate goal of suicide prevention.

PFA RECOGNITION - Bay Shore Brook Avenue School PFA works tirelessly to raise funds to support and enhance BAS’s fine educational programs. Most recently, the BAS PFA presented the Bay Shore School District with a check earmarked for the purchase of approximately 20 new iPads and two charging carts. This equipment will enable BAS teachers and students to keep moving forward, blazing a technological trail through their classrooms.
In honor of Black History Month, the Town of Islip honored five extraordinary individuals in a special ceremony held on Tuesday, February 11th, at the Town Hall Board Room in Islip. Bay Shore Schools enjoyed a wonderful showing at the event, as current district employees constituted two of the five honorees while a third, Reynard Burns, represented Bay Shore as a retiree from our renowned Music Department. The Town of Islip Council Members spoke about each award winner’s outstanding contributions to their communities and beyond before handing the microphone over for individual acceptance speeches. This year’s winners from Bay Shore are High School Social Studies teacher Ms. Lisette Lors and Middle School security guard and coach Michael Brown. Michael Brown began coaching Pee Wee football when he was 18 years old. His love of the sport led him to coaching for the Bay Shore School District in 2005, while he worked as a security guard for the Bellport School District. His work as a Bay Shore demonstrated his commitment to excellence and the children of the community and led to a smooth transition when Mr. Brown began working for the District as a security guard in 2010. Mr. Brown mentors the young men who play for him. His message to each
one is clear: “You can do it!” Building confidence and encouraging children to do their best is what Mr. Brown does best. Mr. Brown also volunteers in the community as a football coach and is always giving to others. During the holiday season, Mr. Brown has his team give back to the community, too, by participating in Stuff-A-Bus at
16, completed her BA in three years at NYU’s School of Education and received her graduate degree from Hofstra University. In addition to her certification to teach Social Studies grades 7-12, Lisette has obtained her Education Administration licenses on both the school and district levels. Over the years, she has been involved in numerous activities: as an adviser for the B.S.O.S.S Club, the co-creator of Bay Shore High School’s annual Black History Month Celebration, and as the creator of an elective course entitled “Latin America and the Caribbean”. Ms. Lors’ zeal to teach stems from her desire to improve the lives of children. She believes that every child deserves a quality education regardless of their race or socioeconomic circumstances. She believes that with patience and perseverance all things are possible. Lisette’s hope is to make history come alive for all students and she achieves this by drawing upon the experiences of her students as well as her own experiences for the purpose of making connections between past and Bay Shore High School and raising money for the Judy present.
