Buddies By: Jamie Lynn Ryan On February 16th, my “half-birthday,” I decided the time was right to adopt another fish to join the family. As of this writing, “Buddy” – as I dubbed my aqua-colored delta-fin betta fish – is adjusting quite nicely to life in his betta bowl. He swims, he floats, he eats… although not when I’m in the vicinity. I literally found myself crouching down out of sight to see if he was, in fact, eating. Most fish can’t wait for that first flake to drop; Buddy, not so much. Perhaps he’s just self-conscious. But I finally caught him in the act, sucking down a betta pellet and – get

this – chewing it thoroughly. I know, I know… fish don’t have teeth. But his motions mimicked a dog munching on a treat, breaking it down bit by bit until he had fully digested his dinner. That’s my Buddy, pretty and quirky and providing some of the best entertainment this side of the aquarium since my dearly departed finned friends, Harry and Harvey. By all accounts, bettas have a much more substantial lifespan than your average goldfish, so let’s hope Buddy hangs in for a while. Of course, I suppose he could already be pushing 3 years old as we speak, so his longevity remains to be seen. For me, the biggest test will

be the weekly water change / “bath time” process, that unwelcome disturbance of fishbowl tranquility that all marine life seems to detest. Unfortunately for Buddy, he has no shrubbery or decorative toys to hide behind – yet. We’ll see if I can find something appropriate for his little underwater kingdom. For now, he’ll just have to deal with being on full display for all to see. Hopefully, Buddy will still be flitting around come August 16th, and we can celebrate his “half-birthday” along with my “full” one. In any case, he now has a column to officially commemorate his arrival. Just what every fish wants.

The advocacy effort pressed on to address early prevention through education. “Schools need access to funds to provide earlier education for increasing protective factors for children at-risk of developing substance abuse issues,” says Teri Kroll, LICADD’s PUSH coordinator. “Encouraging grass roots community partnerships to provide these services is an effective and low cost solution to a growing problem,” added Steve Chassman, LCSW, CASAC. Senator Phil Boyle, who headed up the Heroin Task Force in 2014 was in attendance. The task force hosted 18 forums across the state, had over 2,300 attendees, and listened to over 60 hours of testimony. The information and insights from the Task Force resulted in crafting 23 pieces of legislation. These bills supported by Republicans and Democrats will help to encourage prevention, enhance treatment options and strengthen law enforcement. LICADD is Long Island’s premier nonprofit agency providing life-saving alcohol and drug prevention and intervention services to at-risk children, individuals, and families across the region. With offices in Mineola, Ronkonkoma and Riverhead, LICADD conducts screenings, brief interventions, referrals to treatment and relapse prevention services to individuals and families impacted by substance abuse. The agency also conducts evidence-based prevention programs, community outreach initiatives, and a mentoring program for children of incarcerated parents and public policy advocacy. On February 10th, LICADD gathered a group of friends to travel to the state capital in Albany to advocate for families and individuals who are in recovery and who need to be in treatment. The topics of discussion revolved around sober home regulation and early prevention through education. “Sober homes currently are not regulated,” says LICADD Executive Director Steve Chassman, LCSW, CASAC who sits on the Suffolk County Recovery Home Oversight Committee. “In order to have an effective and inhabitable

Elementary Science East Islip’s two elementary schools for grades 3-5, John F. Kennedy Elementary and Ruth C. Kinney Elementary, held their annual fourth-grade science fairs on January 29th. JFK’s winner was Gabriella Schwaim from Donna Marshall’s fourthgrade class for her project, Current Comparisons of Solar Cell Readings. “Our fourth graders were extremely eager and excited to complete and share their projects at the science fair,” said JFK Principal Aileen O’Rourke. “The fair allowed our students to research a topic of their choice, while learning many new skills.

They were involved with reading, logical thinking, writing, math and data analysis as well as scientific methodology. This was a fabulous learning experience.” The winner at RCK was Nicholas Rizzo for his project “Color and Heat Absorption,” which sought to determine whether the colors black and white absorb heat differently. RCK’s runner-up winners were Isabella Fantauzzi and Jack Verdolino. “The fourth grade students did an amazing job,” said RCK Principal Danielle Naccarato. “We had over 130 amazing science projects and the judges – who were teachers

and staff volunteers along with science honor students from the high school – had to work very hard reviewing and appraising the students’ submissions. This was not an easy task as all of them did their best to create outstanding projects.” “I learned a great deal from the students,” said RCK teacher David Lake. “I was truly proud and impressed with their efforts and creativity.” Rizzo and Schwaim will represent East Islip at the Brookhaven National Laboratory Elementary School Science Fair on May 2nd.

TWO SENIOR DOGS FOUND TOGETHER On a cold day in January, Little Shelter went out on rescue. This is nothing new; they do it all the time. But on this day, a very special rescue was made. This was the day that Betty and Wilma were given a second chance at life. Betty and Wilma are two senior Labrador mixes. These two ladies were found wandering the streets by a local town shelter. They were aimlessly walking together, in the dead of winter.

Of course, Betty and Wilma aren’t their real names; we’ll never know their names. Wilma and Betty weren’t wearing tags and they weren’t microchipped. They simply had to fend for themselves. Wilma is a sweet, sassy Chocolate Lab; and best friend, Betty, is a lively and loveable Black Lab. These wonderful dogs are truly inseparable. Their kennels are right next to each other at Little Shelter, but of course, that’s not close enough. These girls whine and cry for each other and are just ecstatic when then have the opportunity to play together. Betty and Wilma are happy-go-lucky and full of energy. They love people, adore each other and are a pleasure to be with. Because these ladies are so attached, Little Shelter is looking for a family to adopt both of them. On Saturday, January 24th, over 90 parents entered the middle school to participate in a series of workshops conducted by community members and school staff. The goal was to provide parents with information pertinent to the social, emotional and academic development of their child. The day’s learning was not isolated to the expertise of the presenters. Parents were encouraged to share their own thoughts and expertise. Together, the participants and educators collectively built upon the knowledge that

each individual had. The idea is to learn from each other and foster a strong home-school connection. Superintendent Dr. Salmon opened with a welcome to the attendees - celebrating the power within the Bay Shore Community. Mr. Gregory Nardone (Board President) and Mrs. MaryLouise Cohen (trustee) also attended ParentCamp to support district endeavors that further community involvement. Two sessions were offered to attendees featuring programs on everything from helping a child continue learning

at home and being a connected parent to the use of technology and mindfulness. Both sessions offered workshops specifically for Spanishspeaking families. Parents left with information that could be implemented and used right away. The idea for ParentCamp started with three Bay Shore School District teachers, Amy Nardone (MS), Gerilyn Lessing (MS) and Debbie Olsen (SC) who participated in a professional book study of Beyond The Bake Sale with teachers around the nation.

St. Mark’s Church in Islip on March 1st at 3 p.m. The four will be accompanied by pianist Christine Dore, performing works by Franz Strauss, Reinhold Gliere, Wolfgang Mozart, Franz Liszt, and Vaughan Williams, as well as the first movement of Robert Schumann’s Konzertstucke for four

horns. This recital will serve as a preview for the Quartet’s debut as featured artists at the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York Suffolk Principal Orchestra’s winter concert, to be held on March 22nd at the Staller Center for the Performing Arts at Stony Brook University.

The Patriots’ wins were the biggest accomplishment in the football industry. Why is it that the little leagues have been stripped of their title but the professional leagues haven’t? Even though cheating in the first place isn’t right, should the athletes be punished if it wasn’t their fault? That’s your opinion to decide.

Every athlete or coach does his/ her best to win, to earn awards and to be famous. Some people might go farther than they should to achieve this goal. Not only in little leagues or school teams do people cheat, but also in professional leagues. There have been many cases where people have cheated to get what they strived for. Debate Held questions and arguments for and against the death penalty, with many defending a side of the issue that they personally disagreed with. Questions and rebuttals were timed, and each student was involved in all aspects of the debate including researching evidence, collecting data on

death penalty cases and representing points of view for the conservative and liberal sides of the argument. “It was amazing and brought education to life,” said Cilmi. “The students took lessons learned in class and applied them to real-life situations.”

The Islip Youth Bureau recently completed another successful Teens For Jeans charity clothing drive. High Schoolers and middle schoolers from across Islip Town were able to collect and donate 2,200 pairs of jeans that will be donated to homeless shelters throughout the United States and Canada. “It’s inspiring to see the sense of service that these young men and women have toward their communities,” said Receiver of Taxes Alexis Weik, who attended the Teens for Jeans Recognition Day on Friday, February 13th. “These

students donated their time and effort to help thousands of people in need, and will play a direct role in improving the lives of others.” Teens for Jeans is a national campaign in partnership with Aéropostale and DoSomething.org; the largest not-forprofit organization for young people and social change. Teens for Jeans encourages young people across the country to run a jean drive in their school or community to help provide clothing for youth experiencing homelessness. Over a

million young people experience homelessness in the United States every year, and one of the most requested items that young people in homeless shelters ask for is a pair of jeans. Special thanks to: Central Islip High School, Bayport Blue Point High School, Islip High School, Hauppauge High School, James Wilson Young Middle School, Sachem North High School, Sayville High School, Sayville Middle School, Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi’s Office, and Kennedy LI Realty.

Alex Deveglio (37-1) and Nick Motta (29-7) both won their first league titles. Deveglio took a close 8-7 decision at 138 pounds over highly regarded Dashea Edwards of West Babylon, while Motta at 195 pounds scored a takedown in overtime to beat Hauppauge’s Anthony Ottaviano by the score of 3-1. tournament, Deveglio was seeded third and Motta was seeded fourth. Other Redmen winners in the consolation finals were Mike Barra (23-11) in fourth place and Joe Marinich (19-10) in third place. TEENS FOR JEANS - Islip Town Receiver of Taxes Alexis Weik recently stopped by the annual Teens for Jeans Recognition Day to congratulate and commend local high school and middle school students from schools throughout Islip Town who were instrumental in organizing and collecting more than 2,000 pairs of jeans that will be donated to homeless shelters in the United States and Canada.

Officer Registration Underway If you have ever thought about becoming a Suffolk County police officer, now may be your chance. Registration is currently underway for the next police department examination, scheduled for June 13th. However, the deadline to apply for

Seven East Islip High School student-athletes – Michaila Dattero, Jackie Ginty, Katie Ginty, Faith Penny, Katharine Newhoff, Anya Schmitt and Christina Talamo – successfully competed as part of the school’s girls varsity winter track and field team at the New York State Qualifier meet on February 8th. Earning All-County honors for the second

consecutive year, League III and Suffolk Small Schools champion Newhoff finished in second place in the 1,500-meter race walk. With a second-place finish for all high jumpers in Suffolk County, fellow League III and Suffolk Small Schools champion Penny likewise earned AllCounty designation for the third year in a row. Newhoff and Penny will both compete in the New

York State Track and Field Championships on March 6 at Cornell University in Ithaca. Schmitt finished in the top 10 for all 1,500-meter runners in the county, Jackie Ginty placed fifth in the 55-meter dash, while the 4x200 relay team of Dattero, Talamo and the Ginty sisters placed in the top eight.

Valentine’s Day that led the Catholic Church, in 1969, to drop St. Valentine’s Day from the Roman calendar of official, worldwide Catholic feasts and leave liturgical celebration to local calendars. The most common modern day stories involve St. Valentine and the writing of love letters, the tradition of which remains today. SSCM’s local celebration of the day involved sharing the love with family and friends. Second graders had an opportunity to showcase their best handwriting and art skills, writing beautiful love letters to family members, which incorporated candy hearts and their fondest feelings for parents, grandparents, sisters and brothers. Students in higher grades focused on love in other ways, studying the life of St Valentine, where the idea of sending love notes started, contemplating the

day historically devoted to love and what it means to them. Their projects included writing up their own “recipes for love” and students’ thoughts on the subject were wide and varied. With their final projects posted and topped off with the beloved I Corinthians 13 passage, feelings that “Love is patient, Love is kind” permeated the second floor of SSCM even more than usual. Between Valentine’s Day and National Heart Month, February is a good time to take heart and students at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park did so in fun and charitable ways these past few weeks. It is purported that the roots of St. Valentine’s Day lie in the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalia, which was celebrated in February. For 800 years, Romans had dedicated this day to the god Lupercus. They would hold a lottery on Lupercalia, in which a man would draw the name of a young woman, whom he would keep as companion for the year. Pope Gelasius I later changed this to drawing saints’ names, whose characteristics the drawer would emulate for the year. The history of saints named Valentine is a bit muddled with many varied stories of which one the feast day was after. It was this confusion over the origin of St.

Student Donations High school students in New York are helping maintain the community blood supply by donating 1,100 lifesaving units of blood so far this school year. Students have three more months left in the academic year to make a meaningful difference for hospital patients and aim to win a scholarship from the Bob’s Discount Furniture $250,000 High School Heroes Scholarship Program. The Bob’s High School Heroes Scholarship Program recognizes students who make exceptional contributions to the American Red Cross blood donation program

in their schools, and helps encourage young people to become involved by helping patients in need. High school students play an important role in supporting a sufficient blood supply. Blood donations at high school and college blood drives account for up to 20 percent of donations during the school year, which is why scholarship programs like Bob’s High School Heroes are important in ensuring blood is available to patients whenever and wherever it is needed.
