This production - which is packed with Tony winners, nominees and Broadway stars - will take place at the Syosset campus, 239 Cold Spring Road, at 7 p.m. on March 14th. For more than 40 years, LIHSA has been a training ground for public school students who want to pursue a career in the arts. Perfect Pin Islip High School student-athlete Adam Rotbart was recently honored by the district with a commemorative bowling pin, recognizing his remarkable feat of bowling a perfect game.

Rotbart, a sophomore, bowled 300 during the first game of a December 8th victory against West Islip, at East Islip Lanes. “I feel like it was supposed to happen,” said Rotbart, who was certain

A number of area high school seniors will be given a break on college costs, as the Long Island credit union NEFCU kicks off its annual Making a Difference Family Scholarship program that will award up to 12 students with at least $1,000 toward a college scholarship. The Westbury-based credit union will begin accepting applications from high school seniors February 25. The deadline for applications is April

29, with the winners announced in mid-June. Those applying must have a four-year overall GPA of 90 or above, and have dedicated a minimum of 50 hours toward community service work and projects. The program is open to any high school senior who is a NEFCU member or has a parent/guardian who is a member. Anyone who lives or works on Long Island can become a NEFCU member with just a

$5 deposit. The application requirement includes an essay, an unofficial school transcript and documented proof of community service. “We’re all too familiar with the rising cost of education, and this is just one way we’re helping ease some of the financial burden for our members,” said Valerie Garguilo, vice president of marketing and community relations for NEFCU. “This is one of six scholarship and

Help Kids Feel Comfortable at the Dentist

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that a child go to the dentist by age 1, or within six months of the eruption of his or her first tooth. Parents worried about how their kids will respond to the dentist can take the following steps to acclimate kids to dental visits to make them more comfortable during their appointments now and down the road: Be a positive role model. Children frequently learn by example. If they see their parents being diligent about dental care, they’re more likely to embrace proper oral hygiene. Bring children to your own dental appointments so they understand the process and become familiar with the type of equipment used. Routine dental examinations and cleanings are an important component of oral healthcare for both children and adults. However, many children do not visit the dentist until well after the time recommended by medical and dental professionals.

Stick to the first-tooth milestone. Take your child to the dentist on or about when his or her first tooth erupts. Early dental visits will get kids used to going to the dentist and prevent minor problems that may lead to more complex

dental issues. Read books about the dentist and role play. Information can allay kids’ fears about the dentist. Read books together about dental visits and act out possible scenarios with your kids. Give kids toy dental health tools and have them practice exams on you and vice-versa. Be supportive and instill trust. Avoid telling your child that everything will be okay. If a procedure is needed, this could affect his or her trust in you and make the dental office an even greater source of anxiety. Simply be supportive and offer a hand to squeeze or a hug if your child needs you. Consider using your dentist. This allows kids to be mobile, even during chemo treatments.” Gordon’s freshman classes hope to fill a water cooler bottle full of tabs to earn the money for the Brady Buggy. Once enough tabs are collected, they will be presented to Islip’s American Legion Rusy-Bohm Post 411 and American Legion Auxiliary, and the Town of

Islip Youth Bureau. These organizations, in turn, will donate the money for the buggy, which costs approximately $1,000. “Since Stony Brook is the only children’s hospital in Suffolk County, we saw a need to help with a Brady Buggy,” said RusyBohm representative Joan M. Smith. “We are also helping with their current building project to enlarge the hospital and bring in medical specialists from around the country to make this hospital an allinclusive, one-of-a-kind hospital for all children and their medical needs.”

Islip High School students in Ann Gordon’s ninth-grade classes are collecting food and beverage can tabs as part of a community service project, with the objective to collect enough tabs to provide a Brady Buggy for the children’s ward at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. These handcrafted wagons, outfitted with attachments for medical necessities, allow young children who are bedridden to enjoy time away from their hospital rooms. “The Brady Buggy wagon was created specifically to allow children and their

Freshmen and sophomores in teacher Greg Kguloian’s English classes at East Islip High School worked as imaginative, cooperative teams, competing to create imaginary articles for their latest student-centered class activity, “Fiction News.” Each student was expected to do independent research to prepare for as “real-world” recreation of how news is efficiently collected, checked for verification and then presented to the public at large. In the first part of the project, students read newspapers to see how professional news outlets present news articles, and watched news broadcasts from the major television network channel of their choice. After each student had the experience of seeing how the real world presents action news, the East Islip high schoolers were charged with creating

their own fictional news. In the next section of the lesson, the students read Shakespeare plays – “Romeo and Juliet” for the freshmen, “Julius Caesar” for the sophomores – and made detailed annotations about what they had learned. They then used these notes to create an imaginary article, choosing any major character from the play and writing several paragraphs about any scene from their point of view. After completing each play, the classes voted for three “general managers,” and each student manager hired their own news team from students in their class. The three teams worked to create scripts from their combined individual imaginary news articles, with the general managers serving to coordinate the stories to form informative formal presentations, which were rated by their classmates.

Snowflake Students

“Authenticity was paramount,” said Kguloian, who said that the head-tohead competition between the three teams recreated the old prime-time network wars between ABC, NBC and CBS. Each student group brought something unique to the table. Some teams utilized prerecorded video feeds as if they were “live at the scene,” while others included appropriate sports and weather segments. “My kids put a lot into this activity and got a lot out of it,” said Kguloian. “I wanted our students to do something that would help them interact with the text of the plays and effectively utilize details and quotes from their close reading. They really enjoyed taking what they learned and creating something more out of it, and it helped make the literature that we read seem more interesting and relevant.”

East Islip High School student volunteers had a chance to shine at the sixth annual SEPTO Snowflake fundraiser, held on January 29th at the local Ancient Order of Hibernians Hall on Champlin Avenue. The event brings the community together to highlight the district’s special education programs, with all proceeds going toward scholarships for graduating seniors and classroom grants in the district. Under the supervision of family and consumer science teacher Pat

Emmons-Fritz, students enrolled in the school’s burgeoning Culinary Arts and Hospitality Career Academy catered the event, preparing and serving a variety of appetizers and fruit and vegetable platters made fresh in the Career Academy kitchen. During the event, students showed off their talents by preparing vegetable and fruit sushi rolls. The students began preparing for the event in early January and came in during midterm week to make the final preparations. Assisting the students

were two mentors, Brian Valdini, the chef and owner of Fatfish, and East Islip alumna Jamie Swanberg, a culinary arts graduate of Johnson & Wales University. Meanwhile, other dedicated high schoolers – including Caroline Buckley, Kyle Engblom, Nicole Humpf, Taylor Kozak, Katrina Koppleman and Tom Murphy – worked hard to sell raffle tickets. It was the third year in a row that Engblom, Kozak and Murphy had volunteered for the Snowflake fundraiser.

An Afternoon with Billy By: Jamie Lynn Ryan In all the hype over our dear Buddy the Betta’s first birthday last week, another momentous occasion got lost in the shuffle – my opportunity to attend an intimate Q&A with Billy Joel at my alma mater, C.W. Post. It was designed to give the students of the Long Island High School for the Arts an opportunity to learn from the master, one who happened to make a rather sizable donation to their school in an effort to keep it up and running for the next generation of promising performing artists. Of course, officially, I was “covering” this event in my capacity as a journalist; however, the opportunity

to be a part of such a small audience in front of one of my idols had its own unique appeal on a personal level – at the very institution where I obtained my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree over a decade ago. While not a full-fledged concert by any means, there was “a little music” to go along with the anecdotes, making for an afternoon of memories to last a lifetime. In the weeks since, I had occasion to peruse my college portfolio, where I came across an essay I had written on the hopes and aspirations I had for my career. “Countdown to Commencement,” it was called, covering everything from grad school to loans to the job search to that endless search for fulfillment.

As much as anyone thinks he/she has life all mapped out, it is nearly impossible to rely on a set blueprint. Because, every now and then, life itself beckons, with all its unanticipated twists and turns. Such was my sentiment in the Spring of 2004, and so it remains. If you had told me 12 years ago that I would be back in the Tilles Center theatre, as an editor and columnist, mere feet away from the likes of Billy Joel… well that would have fallen under the “unanticipated” category for sure. I can only imagine the thrill it was for those high school students, those with the world at their feet, endless opportunities stretched before them. Oh, to have that feeling once again…

Few adults can imagine a life that does not include financial- or work-related stress. But there are ways to combat stress that can benefit people’s longterm health and improve their presentday quality of life.
