Freezin’ for a Reason waters of the Hempstead Harbor to raise funds for the athletes of Special Olympics New York. All funds support Special Olympics New York’s programs and promote awareness of people living with intellectual disabilities in New York. Each year, Special Olympics Polar Plunges are held throughout the country to attract
thousands of chilled souls to engage in a commendable and thrilling fundraising event. Last year, more than 6,000 plungers and 15,000 spectators were part of the Plunge Season raising nearly $1 million statewide. All funds support Special Olympics New York’s programs and promote awareness of people living with intellectual disabilities in New York.

Amanda Munz, founder of The Fashion Foundation, started a non-profit in 2014 to sell fashion apparel at a reasonable price and, more importantly, to help provide students with school supplies. As someone who has always loved fashion, Amanda decided to study at the Fashion Institute of Technology in Manhattan. After receiving her Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Merchandising, she went on to receive a Master’s degree in Public Administration. While getting her feet wet in the fashion industry, she constantly took note of people throwing fashion apparel in the garbage, as well as samples building up that designers didn’t know what to do with. This inspired her to start The Fashion Foundation, where she utilizes those pieces by selling them at a reasonable price, and then pays it forward by using the profits earned to purchase school supplies for students to help them succeed. Today, Munz runs a showroom in Farmingdale, as well as a pop-up showroom in Manhattan, where new apparel can be purchased for a fraction of its retail cost. Many items are also available for purchase on her website, www.TheFashionFoundation.org. To this day, she has received thousands of pieces from fashion companies and helped countless students succeed. The Fashion Foundation has purchased clean uniforms, notebooks, art
supplies, athletic equipment, backpacks and more for students in New York. Amanda never just hands a school a check; instead, she orders the supplies, ships them to the school directly and is usually always there to hand-deliver them to the students herself. It’s apparent she truly loves what she does! Minimizing damage only goes so far. At a certain point, we all need to take the leap. We must choose to forge ahead, or fall behind. I don’t think anyone would prefer the latter. Close your eyes and jump. As the saying goes... Shoot for the moon... Even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.

Growing up on Long Island, I realize it is easy to be misled into thinking everyone lives as we do, but that is not the case. Ian is much more than just someone in the photo on this page; he is one of many people across the world who is reaching out for help. Although there are plenty of ways we can spend $1 a day, using that money to mentor a child in need is truly a priceless experience!

Hope Children’s Fund is an international non-profit that operates with the motto “Education Is Key.” For children in Kenya, this couldn’t be more true. Without an education and the ability to speak English, these children often lack the opportunity to rise above fetching water and cutting wood. Kevin Mann, Vice President of Hope Children’s Fund, explained, “The government in Kenya doesn’t have the resources to take care of the children in their country like the United States government does.” It is not shocking to see a very young child in Kenya hopelessly wandering the streets without family...hungry and just trying to survive. Hope Children’s Fund does something about this problem. In 2001, Hope Children’s Fund registered as a nonprofit and raised $40,000 through donations – precisely enough money to begin construction on an orphanage that stands high up on a hill in Meru, Kenya. By 2005, the orphanage opened and began transforming lives for children, many of whom had lost their parents in the AIDS epidemic. This orphanage, Jerusha Mwiraria Hope Children’s Fund Home, has a dining hall and a dormitory for boys and girls. It provides the children with shelter, steady meals and the opportunity to attend school. The children are shown family values and given chores to complete in order for them to gain life skills. They currently house 100 children and have had many success stories. If you would like to be part of another one of their success stories, you can! There are 22 orphans who still need to be sponsored through Hope Children’s Fund’s sponsorship program - $1/day or $365/year will help send these children to school so they have a better chance

101 Years Young
Ms. Helen Selva recently turned 101 on Sunday, February 11th. A lifelong resident of the Town of Islip, she was born and raised in Bay Shore, graduating from Bay Shore High School. She then
moved to Islip, where she has resided for more than 50 years. Helen had a long and successful career with Mobile Oil, moving up through the ranks to a high management position,
running a department, which was rare for a woman in her time. She has traveled through most of the world and remained quite active, driving herself to church every day up until last year when she suffered a stroke, from which she has fully recovered. It is wonderful to listen to Helen talk about growing up in Bay Shore, and it’s amazing to listen to details about the Truman administration. Her family wishes her a very Happy 101st Birthday and many more happy, healthy years to come. Helen is pictured here being honored by John Cochrane, Jr. of the Town of Islip with a certificate commemorating this special birthday.
GAMES COME TO SOUTH COUNTRY - Mrs. Balzano, Mrs. Paolantonio and Mrs. Schmidt, the South Country School PE teachers, transformed the gymnasium into the Winter Olympics. Students participated in more then 15 athletic stations that resembled sports featured in the Olympic games such as cross country skiing, bobsledding, and curling. Students viewed the Olympic games on a widescreen Smart board, while competing against their classmates. Go Team USA!
Community Coalition Suffolk County Community College’s Michael J. Grant Campus Chemical Dependency Counseling (CDC) Program has launched a community coalition to reduce underage alcohol use, tobacco and other drug consumption on the campus as well as in the surrounding Brentwood community. The effort is being funded by a $690,704, five-year, New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) - College Environmental Prevention Grant awarded to the college last year and unanimously adopted by the Suffolk County Legislature on February 6th. A newly formed campus community coalition is the driving force behind the effort and will implement strategies to reduce availability and problems associated with drinking,
substance misuse and abuse. Coalition members include representatives from various Suffolk County Community College departments as well as community members, including parents, teachers, law enforcement, businesses, religious leaders, health providers and other community activists who are mobilizing at the local level to make their communities safer, healthier and drug-free. Prevention specialist and CDC Prevention Program Coordinator Kathleen Flynn-Bisson will spearhead the coalition’s efforts. FlynnBisson said the coalition will focus on: preventing access or the methods in which underage youth procure alcohol e.g., fake identification or third party transactions changing the campus community norms
that promote underage drinking prevention and reduction of drug use including prescription misuse. Flynn-Bisson said one of the first actions of the group was an Alcohol, Tobacco & Other Drug Survey to evaluate student’s concerns, attitudes and knowledge about drinking and drug use, their experience with individuals who have been drinking, and their own experiences with alcohol and other drugs. A random sample of Grant campus students were sent an email inviting them to participate in the survey that will be conducted three times over the next five years. The results of the survey will give the coalition a better understanding of current substance use issues and in turn will guide their prevention efforts.
Honor Band Performance
Outstanding musicians from Catholic schools across Long Island performed in the 37th annual Honor Band Concert last weekend. This unique music event was presented by Paul Effman Music Service and included students from 46 Catholic elementary schools in the Diocese.
Seventeen students from Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park had the privilege of being selected to perform in the concert. It was a wonderful evening of thrilling music and the theater at St. Anthony’s High School in South Huntington was filled with cheers of “Bravo!” and “Encore!” as
the final strains of John Philip Sousa filled the hall. Congratulations to all of the dedicated performers from SSCM and all Long Island Catholic Schools and many thanks to Miss Wilke for sharing her time and talent with SSCM and enriching their lives with the love of music!

On Saturday, February 3rd, Bay Shore Schools Superintendent Joseph Bond announced that when work is completed on the new wrestling facility at Bay Shore High School, it will be renamed the Jumper Leggio Auxiliary Gymnasium. Jumper Leggio (BSHS ‘53) was born and raised in Bay Shore. During his years at Bay Shore High School, he was one of the
best wrestlers on Long Island. After serving in the United States Navy, Jumper returned to Bay Shore and founded the Kid Wrestling program in 1961 with his friend, Bill Knapp. Now in his 80s, Jumper can still be found on the mats, coaching both Kid Wrestling and working with the Bay Shore Varsity Wrestling team. County Legislators Tom Cilmi and Steve Flotteron, CLIMBING HIGH - Scholars in Project Adventure at Bay Shore High School are Town of Islip Supervisor climbing to new heights. The third graders BIG WORDS - Scholars in Mrs. Lentini’s kindergarten class at Fifth Avenue School worked with groups to improve their reading fluency and emotion before performing read the book Martin’s Big Words by Doreen Rappaport, which explores the words of a readers’ theater for How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. They then shared their own favorite “big words.”

East Islip High School’s varsity wrestling team competed in the League V championships at Comsewogue High School on February 3rd, capturing 11 medals. Senior captain Zach Cabrera (126 pounds) and fellow senior Kiernan Stanton (220 pounds) were both finalists in their respective weight
classes. Third-place winners included senior captain Nick Picece (132 pounds), junior Jonathan Guadagno (160 pounds), and sophomore Nick Agresta (182 pounds). Earning fourth place were freshman Anthony Buccino (113 pounds), junior Rich Squeglia (138 pounds), sophomore Mark Shayew (145 pounds),
freshman Michael Colon (152 pounds) and senior Isaiah Robinson (182 pounds). All Redmen wrestlers qualified to compete in the Suffolk County championships to be held on February 10th at Suffolk County Community College in Brentwood.
Journey of 1,000 Books The East Islip School District embarked on a new reading adventure this school year. The 1,000 Book Project is a voluntary, readaloud program offered to students in kindergarten, made possible by a generous donation from the district’s From For the Kids Foundation. At both Connetquot and Timber Point elementary schools, kindergartners were challenged to begin a journey of reading 1,000 books before they move on to the grade 3-5 buildings. To participate,
students had to register for the program in their elementary building. The books were chosen by Sara Anderson, the district’s director of humanities alongside Connetquot Principal Danielle Flaumenhaft and Timber Point Principal Danielle Naccarato. Each of 100 book bags provided contained 10 books, including a high quality read-aloud, two fiction read-alouds, two nonfiction read-alouds with a science or social studies focus, one counting book, one

alphabet book and three titles with predictable or rhyming texts. Many of the titles were Caldecott Honor Books, Theodore Seuss Geisel Honor Books or Ezra Jack Keats Honor Books. “The heart of the 1,000 Book Project is to foster a lifelong love of reading, beginning at an early age,” said Sara Anderson, the district’s director of humanities. “The hope is that our families will enjoy the time reading together.”

P.S. I Love You Day
New Eagle Scout
Legislator Steven J. Flotteron helped support Bay Shore and East Islip High Schools during Brooke DiPalma’s P.S. I Love You Day on Friday, February 9th. Students showed their support for DiPalma’s nationally recognized campaign by wearing purple, giving free hugs and posting inspirational messages against bullying and depression. “Legislator Flotteron has always been an influential part of P.S. I Love You
Day since it took off seven years ago. He reached out to me once again this year to offer his support in any way he can to make it the best one yet,” said Brooke DiPalma. In 2012, Ms. DiPalma created a YouTube video that has inspired more than 70,000 viewers. Following the suicide death of her father, Joseph, she turned her grief into awareness in order to help others suffering. She remembers the last words from her father that so often people
leave us with, I Love You. She has marked the second Friday in February as P.S. I Love You Day. She hopes that people across the globe will wear a sea of purple, standing up against bullying, helping end depression, and ultimately end suicide. “You can accomplish anything you set your mind to. Brooke is a perfect example, having her message go nationally is a testament to her commitment,” said Legislator Flotteron.

Troop 370, Islip. Sixteen year-old Brake’s Eagle Scout Project was in support of his mom, Diane, a breast cancer survivor. He worked with
his Troop in refurbishing the Islip Breast Cancer Coalition garden at Islip Town Hall. His project included building a bench overlooking the garden for cancer survivors, family and friends to come to reflect and relax. During the month of October, the Coalition adds handmade butterflies with the names of survivors and those who lost their battle to cancer. “I am so proud of Daniel and his accomplishments. His selfless tribute to his mom and others battling breast cancer is an example of leadership for others to emulate,” said Legislator Flotteron.
