The Birthday Betta By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s here! It’s finally arrived! The moment you all (well I and my Human) have been waiting for! My very first birthday in my bowl, celebrated this past weekend with my Human family. Who would’ve thought this day would come… Of course, in Betta years, that probably makes me about 47. Not to mention the countless days… months… years… I spent languishing in that tiny Tupperware container they kept me in at the pet store. But, ever since February 16th, 2015, the day my Human adopted me, all has been well. There was a party, with dinner, and even a few presents! What does one buy a Betta, you ask? Well, there was the pre-Birthday/Christmas gift of a brand new tank – complete
with a filter and a light and everything – which my Human has yet to transfer me into… something about not wanting to “traumatize” me without consulting with the “pet experts” at the store first. I haven’t received a scheduled moving date as of yet. Speaking of, I’m still patiently waiting to be taken on that shopping spree I was promised back in August for my six-month birthday. All the sales that have come and gone… just think what fancy toys and plants I could have accumulated by now! I must have at least enough for a small castle saved away. And pretty gravel… and maybe a leafy hammock to sleep in… and a seashell to decorate… Tiny brain, big dreams. The one thing I didn’t get was a fishy friend to play with. I don’t need anything fancy like me; perhaps just a small
shrimp or a snail to keep me company, and maybe vacuum my bowl now and then. Those long hours spent waiting for my Human to return home each day are awfully boring. There are only so many laps a Betta can swim around his plant, only so much gravel to push from one corner to another. Ah, but enough complaining. I’ve decided to turn over a new fin for my new year and focus on being positive and loving toward my Human, my Grammy and any other visitors who might like to visit and gaze upon my beauty. (Hey, I didn’t say I was going to take up modesty.) ‘Til next time, thanks to all the readers for their birthday greetings. And to my Human family, thank you for the best first birthday a Betta could hope to have. Here’s to many more!
Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Department of Health Services Commissioner Dr. James Tomarken invite residents who are at risk for developing type-2 diabetes to participate, free of charge, in the countyadministered National Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP). The program supports moderate behavioral changes and has proven to reduce risk in those who are at risk for type 2 diabetes. DPP is based on a research study led by the National Institutes of Health. The study showed that with intensive counseling and motivational support, participants were able to make behavioral changes, reducing their

LENTEN LESSONS - As the start of the Lenten season is upon us, second graders at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park have been preparing their hearts and minds for the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Second grade teacher, Ms. Bravo has been reading and discussing Bible stories and parables regarding the lesson of forgiveness. One that stood out at them was the story of Jesus and Zacchaeus, the Tax Collector. Students harnessed their artistic skills and re-created the scene, with Jesus calling Zacchaeus down from the Sycamore tree, reminding them all that we, too, can ask for forgiveness.

Remarkable photographs by two East Islip High School students – junior Samantha Carroll and sophomore Sophia Gerace – were selected for display at the New York State Art Teachers Association’s 26th annual Legislative Student Art Exhibition. The work will be displayed in the Legislative Well in Albany’s Capitol Building from February 29th through March 3rd. Carroll’s piece, “Life Between the Lines,” was inspired by a project on early 1900s photographer August Sanders. “Using his style of photography, the skills and techniques taught in our photography class, and my own ideas and creativity, I was able to create the content in the image,” said Carroll.
For her photograph “Radiance,” Gerace found inspiration in a light in her home. “I took this photo for an assignment on shadows and reflections in darkroom photography,” she explained. “My parents’ beautiful light in their bedroom was the inspiration for the project; it reflects pretty patterns onto the ceiling and walls whenever it is turned on. While taking this photo, I had to angle a film camera upwards and focus on the light while it was on. After I took the photo, I developed the film and then enlarged and developed the photo in the darkroom, which is one of my favorite processes.” Co-sponsored by the New York State Alliance for the Arts in Education
and organized by NYSATA in collaboration with New York State United Teachers and state legislators, the exhibit showcases the state’s art programs and provides student-artists with an opportunity for statewide recognition. It is held each spring, culminating in a March 3rd reception for students, parents and teachers, where legislators from across New York celebrate the artistic accomplishments of their aspiring artist constituents. “Samantha and Sophia have demonstrated exceptional skill at darkroom photography,” said their teacher, Heather Toomey. “Their hard work has paid off, and I am proud of their accomplishments.”
Taking First A team of Islip Middle School students from the district’s EXCEL program for the academically gifted successfully competed at the Future City Competition in New York City on January 30th, winning first place and Best Essay. The Islip team – consisting of Molly Breakstone, Victoria Pearsall and Sofia Rubinson, plus alternate Darienne Rogers – had been working to prepare for the acclaimed regional competition since last summer. The ambitious endeavor included creating a virtual city with using SimCity software, writing a 1,500-word research essay, constructing a scale-model with recycled materials
and delivering a formal presentation to a panel of STEM professionals. More than 40,000 students from 1,350 nationwide middle schools participated. Future City, a program of DiscoverE, is a national, project-based learning experience where students in grades 6-8 imagine, research, design and build cities of the future. Future City’s 2015-2016 theme of “Waste Not, Want Not” encourages students to design waste management systems for residential use and small businesses by looking at issues such as collection, separation, processing, recycling, health and safety, energy efficiency, environmental impact, and cost. In addition to being
awarded trophies and medals, Islip students won prizes that included Amazon gift cards and Microsoft Surfaces, and a trip to compete in the Future City National Finals at the Capital Hilton in Washington, D.C. from February 12th17th. The top prize at the finals is $7,500 for the school’s STEM program plus a trip for the official team members to U.S. Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama. The first and second runner-up teams are respectively awarded $5,000 and $2,000 for their STEM programs, with fourth- and fifth-place teams earning Honorable Mention and $750 for their STEM programs.

Students and staff sported blue shirts at East Islip Middle School on January 26th in recognition of Histiocytosis Awareness Day, which had been declared via a Suffolk County bill sponsored by
Legislator Tom Cilmi. Both the bill and the day were inspired by East Islip student Taylor Ryan, who has been living with the rare disease Langerhans cell histiocytosis since 2010.
According to Taylor’s mother, Teresa Ryan, $323 was raised for the Taylor’s Hope Foundation for histiocytosis research by selling awareness bracelets during the event.

Sparking Learning Innovative and creative research projects by more than 150 fourthgrade students were on display at John F. Kennedy Elementary School’s annual science fair. Students, staff, families and friends attended the January 26th evening event, and judges included several elementary and secondary teachers, a school nurse and students from the high school’s
Science Honor Society. After much deliberation, the winner was announced as Emma Danowski from Lauren Fitzmaurice’s class, with her project, “How Clean Are Your Hands?” The runner-up was Jake Sambo from Jessie Ferraro’s class, for his project “Building a Better Bridge.” Danowski’s project will move on to the Brookhaven National
Laboratory Elementary School Science Fair on May 7th. “It was a wonderful experience for all,” said Principal Aileen O’Rourke. “Learning about science is at the heart of a science fair project. Our society relies more on science every day, and science fairs are a great way for students to become more knowledgeable about how the world around them works.”

EAGLE SCOUT HONORED - Islip Town Councilman Steve Flotteron recently attended the Eagle Court of Honor ceremony for James Mellet of Troop 205 in Great River. For his Eagle project, Mr. Mellet constructed a retaining wall and established a team photography site for the East Islip Soccer Club. Councilman Flotteron thanked Mr. Mellet for his community service and congratulated him on attaining the rank of Eagle.
Black History Honorees
Islip Town Board Members recognized four outstanding individuals in honor of Black History Month at the February 9th Town Board Meeting. The celebration was held in the Islip Town Board Room which was decorated with photographs taken by local artist Saulmon C. Addison and began with Lailani Gibson, a
Brentwood High School student, singing the Star Spangled Banner. The four honorees were Dr. Anthony Bridgeman, Principal of West Islip High School, Denise Watford, the recently retired Assistant Principal of Bay Shore High School, Donna Zephrine, a United States Army Reserves veteran, and Theresa Johnson-
Burnside, the Owner and Executive Director of Terry’s Angel Learning Academy and Daycare Services. These four individuals were nominated to receive a Black History Month award for having gone above and beyond to better the Town of Islip community.
Islip High School seniors Cheyenne Coughlin and Connor Coleman were recently honored with this school year’s Suffolk Zone Award, presented by the Suffolk Zone Chapter of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance at a dinner at the Hyatt Regency Long Island in Hauppauge. Chosen by Islip’s physical education staff, the Suffolk Zone Award is presented annually to one male and one female student from the graduating class who strongly contribute to the positive outcomes of their physical education classes as well as the school. The criteria for achieving this
award include exceptional physical performance, scholastic ability and outstanding character and leadership qualities in physical education, as well as in schoolwide activities. Coleman is a member of the National Honor Society, Foreign Language Honor Society, Mathletes, Young Republicans and the student union. He plans to study accounting in college next fall. An AP Scholar, Coughlin has maintained a 99 average in physical education throughout her high school career. She is a member of the National Honor Society, Foreign Language Honor Society and Athletes
Helping Athletes, as well as participating in the student union and student government. She will attend the United States Naval Academy in the fall. “Cheyenne and Connor have both gone above and beyond in the area of physical education,” said Robert Panariello, the district’s director of health, physical education and athletics. “Physical education has provided them with an opportunity to learn in a nontraditional classroom setting and a chance to challenge themselves physically. We thank them both for their impact at Islip High School.”
Acts of Kindness
Throughout Deer Park‘s Saints Cyril and Methodius School, students, teachers and staff got into the spirit of Catholic Schools Week with a variety of activities and celebrations. With key themes of kindness and acts of mercy, SSCM staff planned a funfilled and thought-filled week for all. Starting the week with age-appropriate discussions on ways each of the students could practice their own acts of mercy and ending the
day with a prayer service, SSCM students went home with hope in their hearts and a mission of good will. In a moving display of how meaningful it can be to have grades Nursery through 8 in one building, students from the upper grades spent some valuable time in the lower grade classrooms. Seeing the 8th graders engaged and sharing with the Kindergarteners was a treat, as they read books, chatted and shared cookies

and milk, all donned in their PJs for Pajama Day. Likewise, 5th graders shared quality time reading and snacking with the Pre-K class. The little ones enjoy spending this special time with the upper grades whom they so look up to and the older students learn patients, gain perspective and have an opportunity to practice acts of kindness by reading to their young partners and reminiscing on a simpler time.

The Town of Islip will recognize individuals who live and/ or work in the Town of Islip, and who have made significant contributions to the Islip community. The celebration will take place at the afternoon Town Board Meeting on March 8th, 2016. To nominate a
