that once the new millennium began, all relatable historical markers were left in the past, and with them some of the most vivid memories of days gone by. How innocent those days seem now, by comparison. Of course, the passing years have brought with them many wonderful innovations and improvements; but we seemed to manage just fine at the time, before it even occurred to our imaginations to dream such concepts. We may not have had cell phones back in school, but we knew how to make snow angels and snowmen, and we knew how to enjoy an unexpected day off much better than our adult selves seem to now. And with that, my shoveling – and my work – is done for the day. It’s on to baking chocolate chip cookies and sipping hot cocoa while catching up on some reading for me. Who says a little nostalgia isn’t good for the soul? Happy Winter to all.

Ah, snow days. Time was, they were a rare occasion to be looked forward to, an excuse to be carefree and cozy and free of all obligation. No more. Now, they are fraught with angst over the prospect of shoveling out, navigating the treacherous roadways and – somehow – making up for the time lost, whether at work, school or elsewhere. Oh, to be a child again… Speaking of the younger generation, as I was moving mound after mound of heavy, wet snow to the curbside in my apartment complex this past week, one of my neighbors remarked how “back in the day” it was common to see the local middle and high school boys clamoring to shovel out their neighbors’ driveways, usually for a quite reasonable sum. They made a few extra dollars, the elderly and infirmed were spared the agony of backbreaking labor, and all was well with the world.

“Nowadays,” he said, “you’ll be lucky to get them to look up from their phone for a minute.” Which brings me to my next point – when, exactly, did it become a requirement for every child from the age of four on up to have their own cell phone? I understand the practical purposes it serves in case of emergencies and all; but you can’t tell me that sending a child to school with a phone is not a distraction waiting to happen. Back in my day (all 17 years ago) we brought quarters for the pay phone. And, if by chance we were low on change, we asked to go to the Main Office, where they were more than happy to let us call home for a ride. My, how times have changed. It’s funny how we tend to lose the perspective of exactly how much time has elapsed between certain milestones in life. When someone says “ten years ago,” I immediately assume they’re referring to the 1990’s, when in fact that decade is now ancient history by comparison. It seems

East Islip High School seniors Kyle Fleitman, Chris Higgins and Kyle Nunez – all standouts on the varsity football team – signed National Letters of Intent on February 1st for National Signing Day. The three Redmen will resume their gridiron careers this fall as they continue their educations. Fleitman, a quarterback and free safety, will attend Marist College in Poughkeepsie, where he will major in business. As a member of the Redmen, he

was named All-Long Island and All-County. “Marist was the best fit for me, all around,” said Fleitman. Higgins, a linebacker and tight end, will attend Stony Brook University, where he plans to major in business or physical therapy. At East Islip, he was recognized as an All-County and AllDivision player. “I fell in love with the school,” Higgins said of Stony Brook. “It’s great for friends and family to attend games, and the coaches

and facilities are great.” Nunez, an outside lineman, will also attend Stony Brook, where he plans to major in business. High School senior Eric Dorsch, former student of Mary G. Clarkson School’s Assistant Principal, Mr. Raio, designed and installed a beautiful Buddy Bench for the Mary G. Clarkson playground. The idea for the project began in the spring of 2016 when Eric approached Mr. Raio to ask if he could do something special for Mary G. Clarkson. Eric is applying to be an Eagle Scout and one of the requirements is to provide a service to others. The idea of a Buddy Bench originally came from a student named Christian Bucks who moved to the states from Germany to York, Pennsylvania. Realizing how difficult it was to make friends quickly, he designed the buddy bench as a simple way to eliminate loneliness and foster friendships on the playground. If a student feels lonely, and is too shy to ask someone to play, they simply have to sit on the bench. This signals

other students on the playground that someone is in need of a friend and they can invite them to play. The addition of the Buddy Bench in Mary G. Clarkson’s playground has helped to spread the message of inclusion and kindness! Thank you Eric for all your hard work in fundraising, building and donating the beautiful bench. Earning His Eagle Badge

Matthew Russell Polidoro of East Islip successfully completed his Eagle Board of Review on August 15th, 2016, officially making him the 68th Eagle Scout of Troop 205 of Great River, East Islip and Islip Terrace. Matthew’s Eagle Court of Honor will be held on Tuesday, March 14th, starting at 7:30 p.m. at Timber Point Elementary School, 200 Timber Point Road in East Islip. Matthew is a member of Troop 205, sponsored by the Great River Fire Department, under the direction of Scoutmaster Mark Businski. On his “Road to Eagle,” Matthew has served Troop 205 as Patrol Leader, Assistant Patrol Leader, Troop Guide – where has assisted his younger Scouts in their Rank Advancements, and also served as a Den Chief to the Cub Scouts in Pack 205, East Islip. Matthew has had many unique Scouting experiences, including being a summer camper for four seasons at Camp Wakpominee in the Adirondack Mountains in Ft. Ann, NY and participated in many weekend campout with Troop 205 on and off Long Island, in a total of 65 camping nights. Matthew

was also elected by his fellow Scouts in Troop 205 to be a member of the Order of the Arrow – the Boy Scout’s honorary camping organization. To become an Eagle Scout, the Scout must earn 21 merit badges, of which 12 are specifically Eagle required, progress through six rank advancements – from Tenderfoot, Second Class, First Class, Star, Life, then Eagle, and also plan, develop, and implement a major service project for the community. Matthew has actually earned 30 merit badges. The Service Project that Matthew developed, planned, and implemented with the assistance of his fellow Troop members, friends and family members, was producing wood signs for each room number and teacher nameplates on all the classroom doors at Timber Point Elementary School, East Islip. As Matthew reflects on his Scouting experience, he recently said, “What I’ve learned in Scouting will set me apart from my peers. Scouting has taught me leadership skills, critical problem solving skills and character development skills that I will need in college and beyond. It has also showed me that with hard work and determination anything is possible. Scouting has definitely prepared me for the challenges of life.” Matthew is a June, 2016 graduate of St. Johns the Baptist High School, West Islip, where he had over a 90 average for all four

years. For three years, he achieved the status of Magna Cum Laude, where he maintained a 95 or higher GPA and for one year – Cum Laude Honor where he achieved 90 or higher GPA. Matthew took St. John’s University classes and Advanced Placement classes during his high school years. He was a member of the high school varsity Crew Team all four years and received the most improved player in the spring of 2015 and was a scholar athlete. Matthew also attended a school trip to Berlin, Prague, and Munich while in high school. Matthew has volunteered for Catholic Charities group homes for four years and participated in the “Midnight Run in Manhattan,” providing food and clothing to the homeless late at night. He is currently a freshman at Roger Williams University, Bristol, RI, where he is studying Finance. Matthew is the son of Donna and Michael Polidoro of East Islip, and brother to Ryan and Megan. Matthew comes from a very active Scouting family where his mother, Donna, was the Pack 205 Committee Chairperson and Committee Member and his father, Michael continues to be an Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 205. Matthew’s brother, Ryan, was also a Cub Scout in Pack 205 and Boy Scout in Troop 205.

Bringing Home Medals East Islip High School’s girls varsity winter track and field team earned several medals at the League 3 championship meet on January 22nd at the Suffolk West Indoor Arena at Suffolk Community College’s Brentwood campus. A field of more than 800 athletes from the 10 high schools in League 3 competed in the event. Senior Jackie Ginty won the gold medal in the 55-meter dash, setting a new Suffolk County League 3 championship meet record. Eighthgrader Hannah Smalley

earned fifth-place in the 1,000-meter run. The 4 x 200 relay team of Mary Kate Carroll, Jackie Ginty, Katie Ginty and Bridget Welch placed second, winning silver medals. The team met with similar success two weeks later at the February 5th Suffolk small schools championship meet, also held at Suffolk West Indoor Arena. In the 55-meter dash, Jackie Ginty won the silver medal while her sister Katie Ginty finished fourth. In the 1,000-meter run, Smalley again came in fifth while Christie Czjaka finished in eighth

“Pencils Down,” a book of poetry written by Islip High School science teacher Wayne Mennecke, was published on January 13th by Local Gems Press. Using emails, excuse notes, labs, test questions and answers to share

his experiences teaching biology, Mennecke turned everyday exchanges and encounters into poems that examine how the connection between faculty and students can be more meaningful. ‘’Pencils Down’’ was

a 2016 finalist in the annual “30 Poems in 30 Days”contest held by Local Gems Press. “This is a book about being in school, with all of its routines, challenges and successes – the sometimes serious, sometimes silly classroom happenings and conversations,” said Mennecke. “It also pokes fun at testing and grading as well as the mindboggling questions and answers students provide while preparing for exams. Islip High School students enrolled in Renee Clock’s business ownership and marketing course recently created their own retail businesses; in the process, they learned about the steps required to open their companies and design their retail stores on the computer. Before the business simulation began, students

were taught about the product life cycle, advertising, utilization of color schemes to entice others to buy a product, inventory control, startup costs and the effects of supply and demand on cost. The simulation phase entailed students buying and selling their products – using mock paper money – during class and recording

all financial transactions using Excel worksheets. Using their acquired business ownership skills, students competed to see who would make the most revenue. Students who complete the business ownership and marketing class earn three college business credits through SUNY Farmingdale.

and a scissor; building a straw structure that could support a tennis ball above the table for 15 seconds or more and planning the most efficient way to build the longest paper chain in a certain amount of time. “It’s absolutely amazing what these students are able to create when given the opportunity to explore, problem solve, collaborate and create,” said Bromberg.

East Islip High School’s varsity boys and girls bowling teams won their respective Suffolk County championship titles at the February 4th competition held at Sayville Lanes. The boys team, led by coach Bob Cheadle, started out with a three-game morning session, scoring 1,214; 1,114 and 1,198 for a total of 3,556, which gave them a 251-pin lead. It was the highest scoring three-game set in Suffolk this year, averaging 237 per bowler. Senior Vinny Altman’s 299 score in game 3 was the highest for the entire tournament. In the three-game afternoon session, the team scored 1,052; 1,074 and 1,048 for a total of 3,174, averaging 212 per bowler. The team’s total for the tournament was 6,730, for an average of 224.3 per bowler. They won by 218 pins, earning their third county championship in the last five years. In individual performances, excelling with consistency were Altman (1,356 for a 226 average in six games) and fellow senior Matt Waldron (1,344 for a 224 average in

six games); juniors Justin Orobello (1,327 for a 221 average in six games), tournament high bowler James Spina (1,366 for a 227.7 average in six games) and Anthony Valente (912 for a 228 average in four games); and freshman Sonny Pico (425 for a 213 average in two games). Led by coach Harold Cooley, the girls team remained undefeated as they won their second consecutive county championship. In the morning session, bowlers included juniors Lauren Christie (226 game and 640 series), Amanda Kreush (202 game) and Melissa Mavrich (236 game and 692 series); sophomores Julia Bocamazo (221 game and 631 series), Jenny Murphy (247 game and 662 series) and Julianna Spina (235 game and 666 series); and eighth-grader Natalie Mavrich. Afternoon scorers included Christie (228 game and 625 series), Kreush (198 game and 574 series), Melissa Mavrich (215 game and 589 series), Bocamazo (243 game and 662 series), Murphy (205

game and 562 series) and Spina (236 game and 706 series). Over the series, individual scores in six games were tallied by Christie (1,265 for a 210.8 average), Kreush (972 for a 194.4 average), Melissa Mavrich (1,281 for a 213.5 average), Bocamazo (1,293 for a 215.5 average) and Murphy (1,224 for a 204 average), and scores in five for Spina (1,372 for a 228.6 average).
