Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss—is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. Paws of War is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that trains and places shelter dogs to serve and provide independence to our U.S. military Veterans who suffer from the emotional effects of war. In turn, each Veteran can experience the therapeutic and unconditional love that only a companion animal can bring! Since 2014, Paws of War has supported over 100 Veterans with service dogs rescued from kill shelters. The Paws of War Service Dog Program relies heavily on the support of their community and volunteers. Through this program they are able to provide service dogs and their training to Veterans in need at no cost, truly providing them with a miracle! A service dog can help combat the daily symptoms of PTSD. They are trained to pick up stress signals and intervene with their owner to direct their focus back to a positive environment. They can also greatly increase the quality of life for someone suffering from Traumatic Brain Injury. Paws of War trains service dogs to combat the daily issues that someone suffering from TBI has. Each service dog given out is intensely trained before handed off to the Veteran. The lives of many American Heroes have been changed forever because of what this organization has done for them!
Below is a list of more services that Paws of War offers to Veterans in addition to their Service Dog Program: •

Therapy Dog Program - This is a volunteer based program in which certified Therapy Dogs are brought to visit individuals that would benefit from a dog, but unfortunately cannot have one at the time being. War Torn Pups Program - This program has brought back dogs from Afghanistan, Syria and Jordan that Service Members have found while out on tour. Community Education Program - This program allows Paws of War to work with members of their local community. Through this program, they are able to provide a direct connection between Veterans and the younger population. Vets to Vets Medical RV - This mobile RV provides certain medical services for service animals at no cost to Veterans!

PRAAT is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that was incorporated in 1993 as a community
service project of the Patchogue Rotary Club. Veterinarian Dr. David Roy Hensen founded this
organization with a belief in the therapeutic potential of dogs! PRAAT screens, trains and eval-
uates all dog-handler teams (the volunteer and their dog). Upon a successful completion of the
PRAAT dog-handler team training, teams become eligible to make visits at over 150 of their contracted and insured facilities across Long Island. PRAAT also runs a Doggie Reading Club. This
program is designed to encourage children to improve confidence with their reading skills, while

Hands-On Business Plan Islip High School business ownership and marketing students recently received firsthand experience in building a business from the ground up. Teams of students competed against each other using the business game Risky Business, which tasks players to be the first to build a company and complete an initial public offering, with success depending on decisions, timing and competition
with opponents. Using the game as a learning tool, students had to meet certain criteria to complete their business plan; hire marketing, product development, finance and sales executives; develop a product line with patents; and secure additional funding. Meanwhile, their competitors used mergers and patent protections to hold them back. Each step of the business plan that was completed allowed the
students to move to the next step, until they had all the components to make an IPO. “The students were really engaged in this activity,” said business teacher Renee Clock. “This handson experience helped the students connect what they have been learning about in the classroom through a realistic approach. They enjoy learning in a nontraditional environment.”

Simple Ways To Be Good To Yourself Years ago, I was roaming the aisles of Costco and picked up a book, titled, 101 Simple Ways to Be Good To Yourself by Donna Watson Ph.D. I’ve been re-reading it ever since. As we grow older and our responsibilities mount, we lose touch with our own needs. Children, spouses, jobs (second jobs), mortgages, car payments, friends in need…the list is endless. The weekdays bleed into each other in a frenetic blur, and on weekends we can barely catch up on sleep, catch our breath and take the kids to their weekend activities. Sometimes “adulting” can make you want to cry “Uncle.” Most likely, you’re running on fumes. If your battle cry of the moment is, “Stop the ride, I wanna get off!” a few small adjustments can recharge a burnt out battery. There are plenty of simple ways to be good to you, which will, in turn, help you be good to others. BREATHE. Wherever you are, whatever you are doing, stop right there and breathe. Breathe out all of the air in your body through your mouth. Count to four and

Students from East Islip High School’s English 11, creative writing and broadcast television classes recently toured the famed NBC Studios in New York City, enjoying behindthe-scenes access to the studio’s sets, broadcast centers and writing rooms. The tour included the broadcast sets of shows such as “NBC Nightly News,” “Saturday Night Live” and “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” as well as NBC’s new 4K theater, production gallery, studio rooms and broadcast operations

Students also experienced a description of the entire television production process from the writing of the sketches and monologues to the steps for production and means of viewer access to shows. Additionally, the students on the tour had the opportunity to create their own unique productions, utilizing their personal scripts and performances. The production was recorded for students to later download. As a follow-up activity
in creative writing and broadcast television, the high schoolers wrote their own sketches, working cooperatively to create characters, scenario and dialogue and taking part in a group editing process they learned on the tour. Meanwhile, the junior English class, focused on speech, discussed the skills of performance and poise demonstrated by various actors and television show hosts, and put into practice such speech techniques as enunciation and holding for laughter.

Among the topics Congressman King discussed with the students and the school officials was the necessity of obtaining federal assistance to provide for the immigrant children who come across the border themselves and then get placed in school districts like Central Islip whose taxpayers have to pay for all the extra expense involved. MIDDLE SCHOOL VISIT - Congressman Pete King (R-Seaford) recently visited Central Islip’s Reed Middle School to meet with Central Islip Schools Superintendent Dr. Howard Koenig, Principal Mathew Matera as well as school board members, teachers and students. 1/2 cup diced portobello mushrooms 1/2 cup sweet green peas 1 24 oz. jar of Ragu Traditional Pasta Sauce (no sugar added variety) 2 tablespoons red wine 1 pinch of salt 1 pinch of black pepper 1 sprinkle of turmeric 1/4 package of Smart Ground meatless soy crumbles 2 heaping tablespoons dairy-free butter substitute 1 box of your favorite pasta
How To Make It Melt butter substitute in a large or medium sized skillet and add in Smart Ground soy crumbles. Mash up and turn crumbles as they brown (about 4 minutes). Turn off heat and set aside.
Pour jar of pasta sauce into a medium or large saucepan, turn on medium heat and stir in diced mushrooms and cooked soy crumbles. Let sauce simmer and then add in tumeric, salt, pepper and red wine; stire altogether, turn heat to low and cover tightly to re-simmer. Boil water and cook pasta for approximately 10 minutes until al dente. (soft, but slightly firm). Rinse and drain pasta and set aside. Steam peas in the microwave or 2-3 minutes and stir peas into sauce. Remove covered sauce from heat. Plate pasta, pour sauce over pasta and enjoy!
