Brewing The Perfect Cup Of Tea Brewing the perfect cup of tea involves a few different variables. One of the components of the process is understanding how water temperature will bring out the best flavor in the tea. According to the independent tea company Two Teas and Bud, if teas are not steeped at hot enough temperatures, they may lack a full depth and breadth of flavor. The darker the tea, the hotter the water temperature should typically be. The basic rule of thumb is that black tea and herbal teas should steep at a full boil, which is between 208 F and 212 F. Green and white teas are more delicate. When preparing such teas, the water should be at just offboil temperatures, between 170 F and 185 F. If you are brewing loose tea, scoop 1 teaspoon per large cup of water (around 12 ounces). In fact, teaspoons get their name due to their use when measuring tea.

In commemoration of the country’s historical inauguration—Kamala Harris being the first Black woman and first woman of South Asian descent to be elected vice president— female students in the Brentwood Union Free School District (BUFSD) joined women across the country in wearing pearls, an element of Kamala’s signature look.

Antoinette Shervington, a Brentwood Freshman Center Guidance Counselor, spearheaded the initiative in celebration of the significance of a female holding the second-highest position in the United States. Ms. Shervington distributed pearls, courtesy of the Cedarmore Foundation, at the homes of Freshman Center students involved

in Girls Inc., a non-profit organization with the central goal of empowering and inspiring girls and young women. Vice President Kamala Harris’ signature look, a strand of 20 pearls, represents the 20 founders and incorporators of her sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha, the first intercollegiate historically African American Greeklettered sorority.

Brentwood MBK Students Serve Community in Honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s Legacy Brentwood Union Free School District’s members of My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) honored the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., in conjunction with the Presidential Inaugural Committee’s Day of Service, by volunteering their service while schools were closed to observe the holiday. Throughout the last several weeks, Brentwood’s MBK students collaborated with staff members to solicit donations of personal protective equipment, personal care items, and non-perishable

food. At Pronto Long Island’s drive-by event this Monday, January 18th, students joined several other MBK members nationwide in taking Dr. King’s legacy of service to serve the Brentwood community, as they distributed the items to several local senior citizens and families. Deeply touched by the generous response of several local organizations and businesses, the district extends its utmost gratitude to BUFSD teachers and staff, Northwell Health, Home

Depot, the Brentwood Public Library, Legislator Samuel Gonzaelz, the Brentwood Rotary Club, and its volunteers. Congressman Lee Zeldin (R, NY-1) reintroduced the Supporting Veteran Families in Need Act (H.R. 492), which is cosponsored by Representatives Tom Suozzi (D, NY-3) and Elise Stefanik (R, NY-21), to make permanent the Supportive Services Veteran Families (SSVF) program. This program provides grants to nonprofit groups and consumer cooperatives that aid veterans with services such as case

management, helps obtain and coordinate benefits, and provides temporary financial assistance. The grant program is required to be reauthorized every 5 years and currently expires at the end of the 2021 Fiscal Year. “The SSVF program is fundamental to our efforts to end veteran homelessness as it enables organizations across the country to provide shelter and essential services to

members of the veteran community in need,” said Congressman Zeldin. “Extending these grants affirms our commitment to ending veteran homelessness across the country and preserves the important programs that so many of our veterans rely upon. Ensuring our homeless veterans have shelter and a safe place to live should never be a partisan issue.”

The Babylon Breast Cancer Coalition (BBCC) was founded in 1993 by three friends who lived in Babylon. Determined to fight against breast cancer by raising awareness and educating women, the BBCC with their dedicated volunteers undertook the task of completing a demographic survey to ascertain the incidence of breast cancer in Babylon. From this, a volunteer driven grass-roots organization grew, which serves the entire Township of Babylon, including those with all gynecological cancers in addition to those with breast cancer. Today they provide direct patient services and support to help ease the burdens that breast and all gynecological cancers put on patients and their families/caregivers. In addition to assisting in the basic needs of those battling cancer, they also reach out to the community at large, providing educational programs to encourage healthier lifestyles, which would decrease the still very high instance of these cancers in our community. Please note, if you do not live in this township, you can still reach out to the BBCC to find out who in your area can be of help to you. The BBCC’s premier program is titled Lend a Helping Hand (LAHH). Since its inception in 1996, this unique patient service program provides much needed stress relief for breast cancer patients currently in treatment, as well as their families confronting diagnosis and ensuing treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation. Later on, the BBCC expanded the LAHH program to include Babylon Township women undergoing treatment for all types of gynecological cancers. Some of the services this program offers include house cleaning, transportation to/from medical appointments, financial
