Tops in Track Continuing a strong winter track tradition, East Islip High School’s varsity boys 4x200 relay team – junior Anoune Basse and seniors Mike Krebs, Andrew Moschetto and Mike Quast – earned the league title by finishing first at the Section XI Boys Indoor League Championships, held at Suffolk Community

College’s Brentwood campus on January 22nd. Basse also finished third in the long jump and sixth in the 55-meter dash; Krebs finished fourth in the 55-meter dash and fifth in the 300-meter dash; and Moschetto finished third in both the high jump and 55-meter dash. Other top Redmen

This December, all of the students at South Country School showed their caring and compassionate nature by donating countless food items to benefit others in the Bay Shore community. For the past five years, South Country School has been participating in its

very own version of the “Stuff-A-Bus” food drive. Each year, they collect hundreds of donations such as canned goods, rice, cereal, soup, pasta, and juice boxes. These donations all benefit the St. Patrick’s Hospitality Center.

This center serves our community members who are less fortunate by providing meals and supplies five days a week. This year, the students collected 1,451 items! Thank you go Suffolk Transportation for donating the bus!

I ended last week’s column hoping that this month of February would bring with it a little more sunshine into all of our lives… While this is a nice sentiment, of course we know that life does not always work this way, and there are plenty of storm clouds to weather along the way. This just reinforces the notion that we must all take the time to appreciate the little things in life, the special moments, those people we love and the many memories we share, as we simply never know when they will become precisely that… just a faded memory among many others. After the passing of my grandfather nearly a year ago, and the subsequent sale of the

house that my grandparents had called home for more than 50 years, there was obviously much cleaning out and sorting through mementos to be done. In some ways, this was the most difficult task of all. To me, nearly everything held some sort of significance, some deep emotional attachment which evoked so many precious recollections of years gone by. Of course, these are just objects, material possessions which hardly make up for the loss of the person they are associated with. But the photographs… those are truly special. And boy, are there photographs. I, being of the slightly OCD nature, coupled with my fervent love of all things photography, volunteered to take on the initial task

of sorting through and cataloging the boxes upon boxes of albums, envelopes full of developed photos and a few dozen or so frames and collages. Several months later, I’ve barely made a dent in the process. But it doesn’t matter. There’s no rush where memories are concerned. They should be carefully recollected, and savored. Every single photograph tells a story; and every story unlocks a treasure trove of feelings and emotions – some happy, some sad, some wistful… all meaningful in their own respective ways. And winter, while it may not bring a lot of sunshine into our lives, is the perfect time to take a moment to appreciate all the memories that do.

TOWN HISTORIAN HONORED - Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter recently joined the Islip Town Board in honoring the official Town Historian, George Munkenbeck, for his educational activities and his preservation work in Islip Town. Recently Mr. Munkenbeck created a diorama of the first Brentwood High School, which opened in the late 1800’s. The structure remains standing, but is in dire need of repair. Mr. Munkenbeck has called it “the most threatened historic structure in Islip Town” and he hopes that the diorama will inspire preservation efforts.

Wrestlers Take Four East Islip High School’s varsity wrestling team hosted the 30th annual Rocky Gilmore Classic wrestling tournament on January 7th, walking away with four place winners. Senior Ethan Addeo (165) placed second overall at 152 pounds. Addeo, who has a team leading 11 pins on the season, pinned his first three opponents, including a pin over third

seed Jose Dejesus of Central Islip in the semifinals. In the finals, he lost a tough match to Malcolm Bunce of Central Islip, 12-3. Junior Rob Condon (106) pinned his first two opponents, including a pin in in the 285-pound semifinals over top seed Brian Plietez of Brentwood. In the finals, Condon lost 2-1 in double overtime to Bob Christ of Mount Sinai.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT - Thirty teachers received the 24-hour Advanced Continuum Orton-Gillingham training during a week in December. The training focused on multi-sensory strategies for teaching reading on the intermediate and secondary grade levels. According to Dr. Russell Endes, Executive Director of Pupil Personnel Services, this training will provide special education teachers and reading specialists additional techniques to address students who struggle with reading. Over the past nineteen years, over one hundred staff members have received training in Orton-Gillingham.

V-BALL HONOREES - Congratulations to Bay Shore Girls Varsity Volleyball players Ariel Beane, Sofia Caradonna, Jenna-Lynne D’Agostino and Kiersten DeCamp, who were recognized by the Suffolk County Volleyball Coaches Association. Ariel, Sofia and Jenna-Lynna earned All-League Honors for a great senior season! Kiersten, a freshman, was named 2016 Rookie of the Year! Ariel also walked away with All-County Academic honors, an award given to the players with the top 12 GPAs in Suffolk County! Way to go, ladies!

Leadership Honored The award, open only to students in 10th grade, is sponsored every year by a donation from the Lions Club of the Islips. Lions Club representative Eugene Petraitis paid the school a visit to present a check to cover the expenses for Lenox to attend the seminar in June. Founded in 1958 by civic-minded actor Hugh O’Brian, HOBY’s mission is to inspire a global community of youth

and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service and innovation. Programs like the Adelphi seminar provide selected students with unique leadership training and motivation-building experiences. “We congratulate Jolie and know she will make East Islip proud,” said her guidance counselor, Jennifer Salvaggio.
