Wednesday, January 29th, Hicksville – As an outward expression of their faith, members of the Diocese of Rockville Centre’s Catholic school community coordinated a winter-themed service project to benefit patients in Catholic Health Services cancer care facilities. The project, done by faculty staff, students, Girl Scouts and parents completed and donated over 150 handmade blankets to a team from Catholic Health Services at a ceremony at the Department of Education’s Hicksville offices on Wednesday. The blankets will be used to help keep cancer patients warm and comfortable at various CHS facilities across Long Island. “We hope that the warmth of the blankets, and the prayers and warm wishes of these beautiful school communities brings comfort to all who are suffering.” Said Dr. Kathleen Walsh, Superintendent of Schools for the Diocese. On hand at the ceremony representing the schools were Kathy Moran, principal of Holy

While flowers certainly add beauty and a wonderful aroma to wedding ceremonies and receptions, there are other reasons behind their inclusion in such festivities. In ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands because the Romans believed flowers signified hope, fertility and new beginnings. In the Middle Ages, brides did not carry flowers, but rather strong-smelling spices and herbs. The rationale was that the herbs and spices would drive away bad luck and evil spirits. Flowers also served another practical purpose. In eras when bathing was a luxury, different flowers and herbs helped mask body odors. It wasn't until the Victorian era, when flowers were used to symbolize romantic love, that they became part of wedding ceremonies, according to Modern Weddings magazine.

Legislator Cilmi Visits Islip Cub Scouts

The Charity of The Month for February is: Girls on the Run of Long Island www.gotrlongisland.org Girls on the Run is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. They run a physical activity-based positive youth development program that is designed to enhance girls’ social, psychological and physical skills and behaviors to help them successfully navigate life experiences.
Legislator Tom Cilmi joined Pack 151 to discuss his role as a Suffolk County Legislator and answer questions about local government. The meeting was part of the Scout’s “Building a Better World” merit badge requirement. These young men are working towards achieving the Arrow of Light…the final step before crossing over from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts. Their upcoming spring season will begin the week of March 16th and is shaping up to be their largest season yet! What to expect in a 10-week curriculum:
At the East Islip School District’s Jan. 16 Board of Education meeting, John F. Kennedy Elementary School third grader Ava McKiernan was honored by Superintendent John Dolan for her charity work in helping sick children. During the holiday season, McKiernan made and sold 41 wreaths, raising $812 for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
Each 10-week curriculum includes lessons that specifically target helping girls improve in competence, confidence, caring, character, connection and contribution.
All coaches are trained to teach as intended, while building relationships with and between girls, creating a positive, inclusive environment and supporting individual improvement. During the 10 weeks, girls will also be inspired to build lives of purpose and to make a meaningful contribution to community and society. McKiernan Honored By EI Board For Charity Work
They serve girls in grades 3-5 and inspire them to be joyful, healthy and confident by using a fun, interactive curriculum, which creatively integrates running! Meeting twice a week in small teams for a 10-week season, a volunteer coach will teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun movement activities. At each season’s conclusion, all girls from teams across Long Island will meet up for a celebratory 5K running event. This year’s 5K event is scheduled for Saturday, June 6 at Hofstra University, where over 1000 individuals will run, volunteer or spectate to celebrate!
Girls will learn skills and strategies such as how to manage emotions, help others, make intentional decisions and resolve conflict, that they use at home, school and with friends.

The temperatures are dropping by the day and with that comes snow, ice and other cold weather conditions. While you and your family are most likely prepared for the winter with warm clothing and shovels, what about your pets? Here’s how you can help your furry family members brave the cold and be safe all winter. Keep your pet warm. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, pets with thick or long hair tend to be more tolerant towards cold weather. If you bring your long-haired pup to the groomer during the winter, consider a simple trim rather than shaving their hair. Short-haired dogs on the other hand get cold fast due to their lack of fur to
insulate their body. Head out to your local pet store to buy a sweater or coat to help them stay warm. Protect their paws from de-icing chemicals. Salt and other de-icing chemicals can be harmful to your pet. Prior letting your dog or cat outside consider massaging petroleum jelly or pawprotectant on their paw pads to help prevent any redness and irritation, as recommended by the ASPCA. Winter boots made for pets are also a great alternative. Limit their time outdoors. The American Kennel Club says that like humans, both dogs and cats are susceptible to frostbite, especially on their earflaps and tails. Limit their play time outside during cold
weather spurts. Emergency preparedness for your pets. Power outages are common during winter-related disasters and can be a threat to you and your pet if the weather becomes severe, says AVMA. Create an emergency kit for your pet in the event of a winter storm or disaster that can lead to a power outage. The emergency kit should include seven days’ worth of water and food per pet, paper towels, waste baggies, blankets, toys and a flashlight with extra batteries. Cold temperatures can impose health risks to your furry friends but taking some precautions can help make winter more enjoyable for you and your pet!
LI Nets Celebrate Town of Islip The energy was high at the newly-renovated NYCB LIVE Nassau Veterans Coliseum in Hempstead Wednesday, as the LI Nets Basketball Team took on the Fort Wayne Mad Ants during the Nets’ “Town of Islip Night.” LI Nets General Manager Matt Riccardi and team mascot Dale the Eagle welcomed Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter and the evening’s honorees to the game, which celebrated the Town and its residents. Mascot Dale and LI Nets Team Hype joined
with LI Ducks Minor League Baseball Team mascot QuackerJack in entertaining the audience with a T-Shirt toss, Islip Trivia and hip-hop dance. QuackerJack and the QJ Foundation were named “Community Hero of the Game,” along with Islip resident and Navy Veteran Carol Squatrito as “Veteran of the Game.” Supervisor Carpenter spoke during halftime, congratulating the evening’s honorees, which included 40 high school students from Youth Enrichment Services
(YES). YES students took part in-game along the high-five line, and were presented with an autographed basketball signed by the team. “This is a great night for our Town, our honorees, these wonderful YES students and our residents,” said Supervisor Carpenter. “Thank you to the LI Nets for welcoming us and for celebrating the Town of Islip,” she said. Peter Kletchka, of the Town’s DPW division, wowed the audience with the Star Spangled Banner.

That’s because, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than one-quarter of the U.S. population reports occasionally not getting enough sleep, while nearly 10 percent experience chronic insomnia. Why To Sleep Good sleep, says the CDC, can decrease the risk of sickness and weight
gain. It helps you think more clearly, decreases stress, and leaves you more energetic and productive. As these qualities improve, relationships tend to improve, too. Lack of sleep can be a problem on the job, too. A study by the Law Enforcement Survival Institute showed that in a computer simulated shoot/ don’t shoot situation, fatigued police officers were more likely to shoot when not necessary. What To Do
Many sleep specialists recommend these four steps: 1. Don’t drink caffeine late in the day. 2. Make sure your bedroom is a quiet, dark and relaxing environment; neither too hot nor too cold. 3. Make sure your bed is comfortable and don’t use it for reading, watching TV or listening to music. 4. Take a bath before bedtime.
