The Great South Bay Power Squadron of the United States Power Squadrons has elected its new officers for 2014. Alicia Pilek, AP, of Medford, has been elected as Squadron Commander. The FTC tournament requires students in grades seven through twelve to design, build, and program a robot to compete with in an alliance format against other teams. Each year, a different themed challenge is presented to those who participate in the tournament. The challenge was “FTC® BLOCK PARTY! SM,” in which Alliances of two teams programmed their robots to place plastic blocks onto pendulum

goals. During each twoand-a-half minute match, teams also had to raise their team flag up a flagpole, elevate their robots off the ground using a platform pull-up bar, and finish the match with a balanced pendulum to earn extra points. Following the tournament, an award ceremony was presented by the FIRST judges. Different teams won trophies for various categories that represented a range of qualities, such as teamwork, creativity, and inspiration. 274153N0205

(SBPLI) presented the FIRST Tech Challenge Qualifying Tournament at Hewlett High School in Hewlett, New York. Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center will be hosting Powerful Tools for Caregivers, a six-week course unique to the Long Island region. Classes will meet on consecutive Wednesdays from March

The Eve Of Excitement? By: Jamie Lynn Ryan All the hype, all the anticipation, all leading to this year’s, ahem, “Big Game”… and for what? Neither New York football team is participating, few locals seem the least bit interested in paying the exorbitant ticket prices to attend and, irony of ironies, barring a lastminute change in the weather forecast, the potential for a nor’easter over the weekend has been downgraded to, um, 46º and partly cloudy. Personally, I have never been to a professional football game. I’d like to,

don’t get me wrong, but the idea of tailgating in the freezing cold – eh, not so appealing. Add to that the fact that my only NFL rooting interest lies in New England (yes, I know, blasphemy), and I have never actively pursued acquiring tickets to a game to this point. Of course, a few weeks back, when the Patriots still stood a chance of making it to the end, the thought briefly crossed my mind. Wouldn’t that be an incredible first football experience? Ah, but it was not to be. Instead, I, like millions of others, will be watching

the game from the comfort of my own home, on the couch, surrounded by snacks. I rarely have much of a rooting interest, but the broadcast is usually good for a few classic commercials and a fairly entertaining Halftime performance. We, as a collective society, will watch, discuss the highlights for a few days and then promptly forget who won, who even played, until next year when the football season revs up once again. And so it goes. On to more important things – like how many days ‘til pitchers and catchers report?

L.I. Cares Donation The Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL), the largest league in the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA), has donated 1,130 pounds of food to Long Island Cares, Inc., The Harry Chapin Food Bank. The food was collected through donations by players, parents, coaches and spectators during the LIJSL Food Drive at the Peter Collins Soccer Park on Old Country Road in Plainview throughout the 2013 Fall Season. “On behalf of all of the children and families served by Long Island Cares, Elana Sissons, Food Drive Coordinator, and I are truly grateful for your support,” said Paule

Pachter, Executive Director of Long Island Cares. “This donation will go a long way towards ensuring that more Long Island children and families do not go hungry.” Long Island Cares has distributed more than six million pounds of food to over 500 member agencies across Long Island but also seeks to heighten public awareness about hunger and provides skills training to foster self-sufficiency among the population. Founded by singer Happy Chapin in 1980, a year before his untimely passing, their mission is a hunger-free Long Island. “The Long Island Junior Soccer League is proud to partner with Long Island

Cares in their fight against hunger,” said LIJSL President Addie MatteiIaia. “We are so grateful to all of our clubs, teams, players and families for their generosity. They have shown time and again that they are willing to go above and beyond, not only to be the best players they can be on the field, but to be the best people they can be off it.” The LIJSL will be holding another food drive during the 2014 Spring Season. also are supposed to provide parents a more meaningful assessment of their children’s progress. Effort and comprehension are areas of focus. One major change with the introduction of Common Core is the greater emphasis on critical thinking skills. Those changes will very likely be reflected in the report card, which will not only assess a student’s detailed content knowledge, but also his or her demonstrated understanding of higherlevel concepts and more. Pay attention to these marks, as they are a significant measure of students’ performance moving forward with the new standards. Progress toward mastery of grade-level standards is the new norm. While every school district may be different, parents across the nation can expect report cards—particularly in the elementary grades— to measure students’ growth over the course of the school year, not just the term for which they are evaluated. As such, it is important that you

understand the different progress indicators and what any numeric codes used actually mean regarding your child’s achievement of grade-bygrade benchmarks. It’s all about college and career readiness. The Common Core State Standards were created to ensure all students graduating from high school are capable of succeeding in collegelevel classes and in their careers. That overarching purpose is reflected in the details of your child’s report card by showing what a student is expected to know and your child’s progress toward those targets. Keep that in mind as you read through your child’s report card. To all you high school students out there: we did it! The school year is officially half over. Midterms are done, and the third quarter has begun. As we are in the home stretch, it is crucial for students of every grade level to start - or finish - looking at colleges. Freshmen, although still young, should focus on maintaining a solid grade-point-average. Sophomores should be preparing to take the SAT or ACT. Juniors need to be primarily concerned with creating a list of schools that they wish to apply to. Seniors, like myself, are now waiting to hear back from different colleges.

Although underclassmen may feel like they have all the time in the world, it is crucial to get an early start. Trust me, that time goes quickly. In addition to keeping up one’s grades, it is also important to set up interviews. For many borderline students, these interviews give them the opportunity to convey their passions more effectively. A student gets to speak directly with an alumnus of the specific institution. An interview is a valuable asset in making your interest known. For instance, just a few weeks ago, I had an interview with Dr. Vitagliano, the proprietor of Smile With Style

Orthodontics in West Islip. As a graduate of Duke University, Dr. Vitagliano is still heavily involved in the happenings both on campus and in the admissions office. During my interview, I made it known that Duke University was one of my first choice institutions. Hopefully, Dr. Vitagliano saw my interest and conveys it to the admissions board. This process can be inﬂuential in affording a student access to a specific institution of higher learning, but grades bear much more weight! Make sure to keep your grades up, take standardized tests, apply to college and schedule an interview!

STEM Hub Hosted

The East Islip Career Academy team hosted the Long Island Division of the STEM Hub program in the school’s library on December 12th. Prior to the meeting, Career Academy students spoke about their experiences this year as seniors in the program to an audience of 50 Long Island educational and business leaders who wanted to know more about East Islip’s programs and how they might begin

similar programs in their school districts. Following the hour-long STEM Hub meeting, the participants broke into different STEM-related groups, and students were asked to critique the STEM Hub website with the goal of making the site more appealing to high school students. The students’ ideas were unanimously approved by the members of the STEM Career Awareness Team, co-chaired by Israel

Malinowitzer, the director of East Islip’s Career Academies, and Kate Raftery, the vice president of human resources for the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. “The students spoke with passion and a true love for the Career Academy program,” said Malinowitzer. “Their presentations were focused on promoting Career Academy programs and STEM programs in all high schools.”

Using Apple’s innovative iBooks Author technology, East Islip High School science teacher Timothy Leigh-Manuell published a digital earth science textbook, which he has now made available as a free iTunes download and iPad app. Emphasizing material necessary for the New York State Common Core Standards and Regents

examination, Earth Science: An Interactive Review Book covers the major topics in earth science, breaking up each topic into subtopics with review questions at the end. It also includes an interactive reference table and procedural instructions for using the more difficult charts and graphs. “When Apple announced iBooks Author and the program’s ability to easily create an interactive textbook, I wanted to give it a try,” explained LeighManuell. “Since all of the content for my earth science class was already done in Apple programs like Keynote and Pages, it seemed like it would be a cool project to undertake.” He used his own

company, Sayville Media Solutions, as the publisher, allowing the book to meet Apple’s policy requirements as well as U.S. copyright regulations. The book took LeighManuell approximately three weeks to create. “It was a little more than expected,” he said, “but once I got the ball rolling, it was hard to stop.” After a few weeks of waiting, Apple approved the textbook and it appeared in the iTunes store. At first, Leigh-Manuell set a purchase price to cover his fees incurred, but he then decided to offer the book for free so that students could have access to the content at no cost to them.

The Islip team placed first overall at the competition, which was held at the Sony Wonder Technology Museum in New York City, and will move on to the national competition held in Washington, D.C. in February. In addition to their overall win, the team won the Best Land Surveying Practices specialty award. The Future City competition is a national program sponsored by the engineering community to promote technological literacy and engineering to middle school students. The goal of the program is to foster an interest

in math, science and engineering through hands-on, real-world applications. According to the Future City website, by participating in the competition, “students will learn how math, science and engineering shape the infrastructure of the city around them. Students also learn life skills such as problemsolving, teamwork, research, written and verbal communication, computer literacy, and gain an increased awareness of community-related issues.”

Star Musician Returns

Master musician and East Islip High School alumnus Joshua DeVries visited East Islip Middle School on December 18th, presenting a mini-recital for members of the school’s seventh- and eighth-grade band. The tuba player, a member of East Islip’s Class of 2008, spoke to the awed band students about effective ways to practice and how studying music can provide many future educational options, and showcased the skills that won him positions and

orchestra fellowships with such prestigious ensembles as the National Repertory Orchestra, Chautauqua Festival Orchestra, New World Symphony (Miami Beach, Fla.), Kenosha Symphony Orchestra and Chicago Philharmonic. After graduating from East Islip, DeVries studied music performance at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla. He is currently pursuing graduate studies on scholarship at Northwestern University’s Bienen School of Music in Chicago. He will also

serve on the faculty of the Luzerne Music Center, a program that provides musical enrichment to students aged 9-18, in upstate New York this summer. “The kids were really inspired by Mr. DeVries,” said middle school band director Concetta Stevens, “and to know that he was once a member of their own middle school band really brought home his message of hard work and dedication.”

Putting their STEM expertise to the test, students in Julia Johnson’s EXCEL class at Islip Middle School competed in the Tri-State National Engineers Week Future City Regional Competition on January 18th. To prepare for the competition, the students worked since September to create a simulated city using SimCity software, wrote an abstract about their city and a research essay, created a scale model of their city using mostly recycled materials, and developed a seven-minute presentation of their city to present to a panel of judges.
