HEARING HELP IS AN IMPORTANT DECISION

Here’s Hoping Hope: A feeling of expectation and desire for a particular thing to happen. And so it begins. February, the month of anticipation, from furry groundhogs predicting the forecast to expressions of love and affection come Valentine’s Day. Is there anyone who isn’t even the slightest bit glad to bid January farewell? Apologies, once again, to anyone with birthdays, anniversaries and other notable milestones during this first month of the new year, the symbolic representation of all things new and fresh. With the possible exception of the few moments of New Year’s Eve celebrations which spilled over into the next morning, I have to
say that, for me, 2016 is severely lacking in positive spin. Sure, winter has spared us its wrath for the most part…save for one tiny twofoot helping of the white stuff. Still, the bitter cold and gray, overcast skies leave something to be desired. There is only so much hibernating and vegetating one can realistically do. (Netflix, anyone?) But here we are, turning the page – on the calendar and hopefully on life – as month two begins, providing us with yet another blank canvas to fill. Here’s to getting back to doing those things which make us happy, to not allowing the negativity of other individuals and situations dictate our moods, to rising above the monotony in search of fulfillment.
Here’s to hoping that February provides the perfect precursor to spring, and all the beauty and wonderment it brings. Plus, we have an extra day to take advantage of this year, a bonus opportunity if ever there was one. Now all we have to do is make use of it, and of all those clichéd philosophies we want so badly to believe in. Whatever it is you are hoping for, may you have the courage to go after it. Good things come to those who wait; but a pointed step in the right direction surely doesn’t hurt. Here’s to February, to frosted windowpanes and picturesque winter sunsets and the beginnings of revitalization. Oh, and of course Buddy the Betta’s 1st birthday. Priorities humans, priorities.

Student Spotlight THE BLUE GLASSES SUBMITTED BY: COLLIN SLATTERY, AGE 11, EAST LAKE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
Vrooommm! The sound of the car engine was all I could hear. I just got back from the eye doctor. Not good. I knew that someday I would get them, but now? I was only 3 years-old. I looked at my mom and brother. They were talking, but I could not hear them. My brother might have been thinking, “Now I have this loser brother with glasses.” I bet he would have said something but my mom would not let him. She simply wouldn’t. Then my mom took her phone out of her pocket and gave it to my brother. I saw him scroll down until the contact for my dad came up. I was starting to hear now, but faintly. My brother hit the “speaker” button on her phone. “Guess who is going to look even more handsome?” My dad guessed me on the first try. About five more minutes passed, and we were rolling down a “one-
way” parking lot entrance. I saw these menacing looking penguins out of the few inches of window space I had because I was so short. They were staring me down, those ugly penguins. I thought how silly I was to think those penguins are menacing. I thought how my eyes might be acting up or maybe the tinted window might be doing it. I looked up from the seemingly menacing penguins up to the name of the shop. It was called the Eyeglass House. Then we found a spot in the deserted parking lot. When I walked into the store, it was a room where I half expected there to be gas coming out of the wall like a torture chamber. It was a 6’x6’ room with a hat rack and a 2’x4’ bench. There was another door in front of me. I walked through the door, touching a dry, old, rusty doorknob. I looked to the left and saw two desks and at least 100 pairs
of glasses. I saw a bunch of chairs with a life-sized Mickey Mouse. I took a seat… “Slay-terry?” an old woman croaked. My mom, Aidan and I stood up and walked over. The old woman had bright purple glasses and nasty, old, ugly, horribly crooked teeth that reminded me of a beaver’s. She picked out three pairs and I disliked all of them. We tried on a green pair that I looked stupid in, a red pair that I liked the best, and heavy, vomit-worthy blue ones that had holes in the rims that kept the glasses on my face. The holes must have been there to catch a new fashion trend, but the only thing it was catching was strands of my hair. “I like these!” the nasty lady and Mom said. Moments after, we walked out with me wearing the blue glasses. I guess all stories don’t have happy endings.

The AHA’s Go Red For Women movement focuses on women’s heart health awareness in February because far too many women are still unaware of the facts that heart disease is their number one killer-killing more women than all forms of cancer combined; or that the
symptoms of heart attack can be different in women vs. men, causing women to delay seeking treatment; or that ninety percent of women have one or more risk factors for heart disease or stroke. This lack of awareness means that more women than men are dying from heart disease and stroke. Go Red For Women’s goal is to save women’s lives. The good news is that more than 80% of heart disease events in women can be prevented by making simple lifestyle changes like eating healthier, quitting smoking and exercising 30 minutes daily. The AHA also encourages women to get their “well-woman visit” at their doctor’s office to help detect the early signs of heart disease. There are currently more than 177,000 Long Islanders
living below the poverty line. The working poor and seniors living on a fixed income often face unforeseen financial difficulties, forcing them to make compromises like foregoing heat that could be potentially lifethreatening. Margarita Grasing, Executive Director of the Hispanic Brotherhood of Rockville Center noted, “There is a lot of need on Long Island. There are many who are doing well, but we also have a lot of poverty; people struggling to survive on very little money. Project Warmth makes a big difference for people deciding which bills to pay each month.”
Long Islanders like Joan Fennel of Freeport hoped to receive a one-time grant to help pay her home heating costs. Fennel, a single grandmother who was affected by Hurricane Sandy is still reeling from the closure of her storm-torn business and mounting medical issues and is struggling to get current on her living expenses, including her utility payments. Living with her daughter and three young grandchildren, she receives regular termination notices from her utility companies despite her monthly attempts to pay her balances. She states, “As a senior citizen on a fixed-income, I need help and I’m no longer embarrassed to ask for it. I worked my whole life, but living on Long Island, I’m not making the income needed to support life. I’m making payments each month, but I just can’t keep up.” She acknowledged, “I am so grateful the support I am receiving through Project Warmth. I feel so much more secure knowing that my family will be warm during the coldest time of the year.” Project Warmth is available during the winter months, generally opening in December, and remains open until the funds are exhausted. With wind chills bringing temperatures into the single digits on Long Island, United Way of Long Island activated its emergency fuel fund, “Project Warmth.” Project Warmth is Long Island’s only non-government, Island-wide emergency fuel fund, serving as a safety net for individuals and families facing energy insecurity who are unable to pay their heating bills. Long Islanders seeking help to keep the heat on in their homes donned winter coats and hats to attend and apply for assistance during United Way of Long Island’s “Project Warmth Day” at the offices of their community partner agency, the Hispanic brotherhood of Rockville Centre in Rockville Centre. Eligible applicants include Long Islanders who are behind in their utility payments, have a low or empty oil tank, have received a disconnection notice, and/or can demonstrate financial hardship. On Project Warmth Day, Robert G. Keller, President of National Grid Foundation, presented Project Warmth with a gift of $125,000, to continue their support of the program. Keller met with several of the individuals who were applying for a Project Warmth grant, noting that “It’s incredibly gratifying to be able to see that we’re helping to make a difference in these people’s lives.” As Project Warmth applicants completed their forms, many of them still wearing their winter coats, Theresa A. Regnante, President and CEO of United Way of Long Island remarked, “There are thousands of people who are struggling in this region and in this weather, one can only imagine individuals braving the night in their homes without heat. We thank National Grid Foundation for continuing to support Project Warmth for over the

The Long Island Water Conference assures residents that there has been no lead contamination in their water supply for over 30 years. All Long Island water providers exhaustively test and treat for lead content. To ensure the water supply is not contaminated with lead, all Long Island water suppliers comply with the United States Environmental Protection Agency’s (USEPA) Lead and Copper Rule and treat the water by raising the pH to help prevent the leading of lead from household pipes and plumbing fixtures. “On Long Island, public water suppliers have been providing treatment for corrosion control for over 30 years,” said Chairman of the Long Island Water Conference Ralph Pugliese. “Water providers take every precaution to ensure a situation like the one in Flint, Michigan never occurs on Long Island. We are fully transparent with test results and would never withhold any information pertaining to resident’s safety and the well-being of Long Island families.” All Long Island water suppliers operate in accordance with USEPA’s Lead and Copper Rule, instituted 25 years ago. The regulation requires all systems to monitor drinking water by sampling the tap water from multiple households throughout our communities. If lead and copper concentrations exceed a certain level in more than 10 percent of customer samples, the system must take a number of actions to control the corrosion. The system is also required to inform people what steps they can take to replace lead service lines and safeguard their water. All results of lead and copper testing are presented to Long Island residents each year in the Annual Water Supply Statement prepared by the individual water supplier and the tap water remains to be of the highest quality possible and safe to drink. Representatives from Huntington’s Heckscher Museum of Art visited East Islip High School’s Advanced Placement art classes on December 14th to provide a digital presentation of the museum’s exhibitions as well as introduce the students to the “Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at the Heckscher Museum” program. Students in the 2D design and drawing classes explored works digitally, discussed professional works and the multiple interpretations of a variety of works. This unique arts-ineducation program, which culminates in a juried art exhibition, offers high school students the opportunity to create work inspired by items on display at the museum
and to exhibit their art in a museum setting. “The in-school field trip was beneficial because it gave me time to think about my concentration for my AP exam,” said senior Destiny Nalls, an AP 2D design student. It also gave me a good opportunity to enter the Long Island’s Best competition and express my creativity.” “Our AP students are extremely hard working and dedicated,” said teacher Heather Toomey. “They are talented and creative, and participating in programs like this will offer them valuable opportunities that will enhance their college applications as well as provide them with creative challenges where they can express themselves visually through their art. I was impressed by their
critiquing abilities – they were professional and insightful. It was also really fantastic that the program provided everyone with free passes to visit the Heckscher Museum in person to view the artwork on exhibit.” “The Heckscher’s visit to our school was enriching and beneficial for our AP art students, introducing them to a variety of artworks currently on exhibit at the museum,” said teacher Dan Figliozzi. “I am excited to see what original works our students create in response to the works exhibited. This really is a great opportunity for all students to share and exhibit their work to a larger public audience.”

Empire Girls State Islip High School junior Mimita Rahman was recently selected as the Rusy-Bohm American Legion Auxiliary candidate for the 2016 New York State Empire Girls State program, and fellow juniors Holly Iafrate and Marina Magoulas were chosen as alternates, awaiting an open position. Empire Girls State is a
unique government-inaction learning program in which American Legion Auxiliary members guide young women to become patriotic and knowledgeable stewards of freedom and democracy. It is held annually each summer at SUNY Brockport. Candidates must be ranked in the top third of their class and
demonstrate patriotism, civic-mindedness, leadership and loyalty. “The ALA believes that educating youth about basic ideals and principles of government will help ensure our democracy’s survival,” said teacher and Rusy-Bohm member Renee Clock.
Olympiad Invitational
Islip High School hosted its third annual Science Olympiad invitational tournament on December 12th, drawing teams from 55 schools from across Long Island, upstate New York, New York City, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania. More than 800 students competed in events focused on areas in science and engineering, including the 23 national Science Olympiad events, the two New York State trial events and two fun trivia events. Currently the only tournament of its kind on Long Island at the high school level, this invitational event was sponsored by Long Island Stem Hub, Brookhaven National Laboratory, Molloy College and Stony Brook University. assisted with running and grading of the events The competition was tight, with the top five teams separated by a mere 35 points. First place out of 55 was Team A from Bayard Rustin High School of West Chester, Pennsylvania, with 143 points. Rounding out the top five were Princeton High School from New Jersey in second (156 points), Ward Melville High School from East Setauket in third (163 points), Spackenkill High School from Poughkeepsie in fourth (163 points) and West Windsor-Plainsboro High School North from New Jersey in fifth (178 points). Islip’s own three teams finished 25th, 31st and 46th. High school teams participate in regional competitions like Islip’s to earn a chance to reach
state competitions, held in March. “The national events held each year consistently change in an effort to stay current with the everchanging knowledge in the areas of biology, chemistry, physics, geology, mechanical engineering and technology,” said Matthew Christiansen, Islip High School’s science/ business chairperson. “In order to be successful, students must be able to work together in order to prepare for either the written examinations or the trials of their built devices. The invitational tournaments therefore help the attendees gauge areas where they might need further preparation before the decisive regional competitions.”

Cooperative Collections Patriotic students at East Islip Middle School’s Builders Club have continued to find ways to honor those who have served in the U.S. military, both veterans and currently deployed service personnel.
Most recently, the club worked cooperatively with middle school teachers Melissa Henderson and Barbara Huether, running class collections, creating cards and decorating boxes for two Marine Corps units overseas. Shipping was
provided by several parent volunteers and school staff members. The Builders Club students were also invited to American Legion Post 94 in Babylon, where they thanked the veterans. Bay Shore-Brightwaters Library Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi helped cut the ribbon for a new program at Islip’s Jewel in the Lotus Yoga Studio which will welcome cancer patients with free restorative yoga, meditation and breathing classes every Monday.
The new program, “Mondays at Jewel in the Lotus,” is modeled after “Mondays at Racine” which provides free beauty and spa treatments on Mondays for cancer patients at Racine Salon and Spa, also in Islip. Legislator Cilmi is joined
by studio owner, Angela Strynkowski, and Mondays at Racine Foundation founders, Cynthia Sansone and Rachel DeMolfetto, as well as representatives from the Islip Breast Cancer Coalition, the Islip Chamber of Commerce and others.
Bottles for the Brave Islip Town Councilman John C. Cochrane, Jr. is pleased to announce that his office is participating in the Blue Star Moms NY6 “Bottles for the Brave” program. The program involves collecting and recycling water bottles, the proceeds of which are used to cover
