The Distinguished Young Women of New York Scholarship Program is now accepting applications for its college scholarship program, open to current high school junior women in the state of New York who are graduating by June 2018. The state program will be held at Cohoes High School on Saturday, July 29th, 2017. Founded in 1958 in Mobile, Alabama, Distinguished Young Women, formerly known as America’s Junior Miss, is the largest and oldest nationwide scholarship program for high school girls. It has provided life-changing experiences for more than 700,000 young women across the country and more than $106 million in cash scholarships at the local, state and national levels and $1.1 billion in college granted scholarships. In addition to providing scholarships, Distinguished Young Women offers Life Skill Workshops and online resources, Community Service and challenges each participant to share its national outreach program, Be Your Best Self. Participants can learn skills like interviewing, public speaking, self-confidence building, financial planning, team building and much more. These skills not only prepare everyone for our program but also for the world after high school and college This is an academic program designed for high school girls who have achieved excellence in academic achievement, physical fitness, on-stage performance skills, and the ability to think and communicate clearly. The winner will be awarded the title of Distinguished Young Woman of New York and will go on to compete for The Distinguished Young Woman of America in Mobile, Ala., in June 2018 for additional college scholarship money. The Islip War Journals are compilations of veterans who served in specific conflicts. The first Islip War Journal covered veterans who served in World War

One, and subsequent editions covered World War Two and the wars in Korea and Vietnam. In addition to collecting submissions for the latest edition of the War Journals, veterans and relatives of veterans who did not submit their profiles for past editions may make submissions at this time. “The Islip War Journals are a way of recording our Town’s proud history of service to the country,” said

HOLIDAY JOY - Students from the World of Independence (WIN), Bay Shore School Interact Club and Peer Support, joined together for their first joint holiday celebration. The students from Peer Support brought in gingerbread houses and assisted their peers from WIN in constructing the houses. All of the students had a wonderful time making new friends, sharing stories, listening to holiday music and laughing all the way!

As we begin this second month of 2017, let us take stock of the year so far… Mother Nature has been relatively kind, sparing us the worst of winter’s wrath and limiting the hazardous weather to one shovel-worthy pileup of the white stuff. Of course, history has shown February to be among the snowiest here on Long Island, so be forewarned. No matter what that little furry critter says tomorrow, we still have several weeks to go before we can start looking for crocuses. Me, I just purchased three new books and am actually looking forward to some cozy, inclement weather to settle in and start reading. The beginning of the year may not be great for outdoor activities - although, it should be noted,

some of the most exquisite sunrises and sunsets tend to grace our skies during these month - but there are plenty of indoor hobbies to embrace, from movies to bowling to planetarium shows and more. Speaking of pastimes, I was pleasantly surprised to receive quite a bit of feedback to last week’s column on the closing of my yoga studio, with many offering their recommendations for alternative locations and similarly touting the benefits of this spiritual practice. Thank you to all who wrote in – it is certainly nice to know that there is an entire community of fellow “yogis” out there, and that many of you read my column weekly! In line with that feedback, it also occurred to me that I never did share the arrival of a new little finned friend,

“Spud,” who I adopted back at the end of November. While no pet will ever come close to replacing my Buddy and our very special relationship, Spud is certainly an entertaining little fellow with a personality all his own. Just a mere baby betta when I took him in, he is slowly growing into a beautiful boy with spikey blue fins and a penchant for darting to and fro and “playing” with his reflection. Spud’s swimming skills can use a little work, and I’m still crushing his food pellets into tiny, more manageable crumbs for his delicate system; but, overall, he seems to be adjusting to his new home quite nicely. And with that, we head into February, hoping that each passing month brings with it a little more sunshine into our lives.

Dr. Robert Drysielski has been named the new social studies coordinator for the Islip School District. Prior to joining Islip, Dr. Drysielski was a middle school social studies teacher for grades 6-8 at St. Mary’s Elementary School in Manhasset from 2004-2010. He then taught social studies at St. Dominic High School in Oyster Bay from 20102016, serving in various roles including dean, chairperson for the social studies department and most recently, assistant principal for academics.

East Islip Embers Every year, East Islip High School students in teacher James Connell’s video production and broadcast television classes take the reins to produce and film their own live variety show program, Embers Coffee House. Throughout the morning, their classmates cycle in and out of the broadcast room, serving as an appreciative student audience. More than 750 students attended this year’s Embers.

Student performers– ranging from musicians to comedians – included Mal Brewster-Holland, Amber Carr, Gabriella Commisso, John Fasano, Evan Mauner, Annie McClain, Isaiah Robertson, Katie Spina and Damian Vargas. Working hard to ensure the event ran smoothly were student staff members such as producers Sarah Hillman and Tommaso Rotella, technical director Meaghan McCaffrey, audio technician Bailey

Nelson, barista Rob Iadanza and hosts Vincent Hardy, Steven Murello, Noah Palmieri and Betsy Ruhrold. “Everyone really enjoyed the event,” said Connell. “My special thanks go out to all of the performers and staff for working at Embers, the teachers who brought their classes, as well as the high school administration who help us run a safe and enjoyable event each year.”

Last fall, East Islip High School began its first year with AP Capstone, and the College Board program has proven both challenging and innovative. The program is comprised of two AP courses - AP Seminar and AP Research - and is designed to complement and enhance the discipline-specific study in other AP courses. East Islip was accepted to be an AP Capstone school in the fall of 2015, and was one of less than 700 schools in the United States offering this program during the 20162017 school year. According to Janet Jones, the district’s director of math and science, East Islip’s

AP Capstone program provides unique research opportunities that focus on collaborative teamwork and communication skills that are increasingly valued by colleges. “It cultivates curious, independent, and collaborative scholars and prepares them to make logical, evidence-based decisions,” said Jones. The school’s first AP Capstone students are currently taking AP Seminar, and recently began their required practice presentations, researching and presenting arguments for topics such as “Should GMOs Be Funded by Government?” and “Can Humans Reverse the Sixth Extinction?”

Kathleen Dinota, the teacher of AP Seminar, grouped the students based on possible connections between chosen topics. The students were then asked to collaborate and find solid connections based on facts. These connections were then compiled and put into seamless, professional PowerPoint presentations that accompanied a timed verbal description of the group’s support of their chosen argument. “Our AP Capstone students spoke with selfassurance, conviction and astuteness thus making them one step ahead of the rest in terms of college and career readiness,” said Jones.

STUDENTS LEARN YOGA - At South Country School, students have the opportunity to join the Yoga Club. In addition to learning breathing techniques and poses, students also learn about some of the background of yoga practice.

For the last ten years or more, Bay Shore Middle School English and writing enrichment teacher Mrs. Yarborough and science teacher Mr. Slutsky, along with various colleagues have been escorting students from the Bay Shore Middle School to St. Patrick’s Hospitality Center to volunteer their services in the hopes of capturing the true meaning of the holiday season – give, give, give and then give some more whole-heartedly and open-mindedly. On Friday, December 23rd, students and teachers sung carols, served lunch, beverages and desserts, and distributed donated toys, clothing and canned goods. Most importantly, they had conversations and

shared their time with the various people who come for a warm meal and some holiday cheer. This year’s added bonus was a special solo of “Silent Night” sung by Layla Milza and a saxophone and trumpet duet of the “Star Spangled Banner” played by Scott Wysocki and Shea Jordan. With enthusiastic bright smiles and hearts of gold the following students were proud representatives of the Bay Shore Middle School’s Community: Madison Cosgrove, Madison Henriquez, Jaiden Fraseer, Mia Pelaez, Emerson Quituizaca, Sean MacFadden, Brianna Rodriguez, Maryorie Saravia, Morgan Wiig, Daevon Reddick, Emily Sperling, Iymond McLaren,

Aaliyah Beckford, Aqsa Moughal, Piper Wood, Cristian Diaz, Myles Rabin, Elizabeth Alba, and Khaliya Winston-Luke. These students made a difference distributing care packages and cards created by Mrs. Lessing’s and Mrs. Spinelle’s Mentor & Mentee Program patricipants, toys made by Mr. Kaplan’s Toy Making Club, delicious cookies baked by Mrs. McDuffie’s Home and Consumer Science’s classes, canned goods collected by Mrs. Campos’ Tri-M Music Honor Society, clothes collected for the Middle School’s Caring Closet, and toys and clothes donated by the students and families from Mrs. Yarborough’s classes.

Competition Underway

Following the FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Competition Kick Off Event that was held at Stony Brook University on Saturday, January 7th, the FIRST Long Island build season is officially underway. Presented by School-Business Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), the event hosted students, mentors and parents from 48 FIRST Long Island teams, who gathered in anticipation of learning the official rules for FIRST STEAMWORKSSM. Described by FIRST as a competition that “invites two adventurers’ clubs, in an era where steam power reigns, to prepare their airships for

a long-distance race,” FIRST STEAMWORKS is every part the ode to a time gone by. During the competition, two 3-team alliances will take to the playing field to complete a variety of tasks in an effort to score points and win the round and eventually advance to eliminations and finals. As with all FIRST Robotics Competitions, FIRST STEAMWORKS will begin with a 15-second autonomous period, during which robots may only operate on preprogrammed instructions to complete one of three tasks and/or cross the baseline. During the remaining two minutes and 15 seconds, students will control the team robots to build steam

pressure, start rotors and prepare for flight. Detailed instructions for each of these tasks are available in the official FIRST STEAMWORKS Overview and a visual description can be found in this animated video from FIRST. As the theme of this year’s game, FIRST STEAMWORKS will be in full-force during the 2017 SBPLI Long Island Regional FIRST Robotics Competition scheduled to take place at Hofstra University on March 31st and April 1st. Glaucoma Awareness Month January is National Glaucoma Awareness Month, an important time to spread the word about the importance of taking care of your eyes. The risk for vision loss and related complications increases with age. Some type of sight-threatening eye problem affects 1 in 6 adults 45 and older and Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in the world, according to the World Health Organization. Protecting your eyesight is vital to maintaining your overall quality of life and preventing the onset of glaucoma. AgeWell New York encourages members to make their eyes a priority by following these few tips: Know your risk. Conditions like diabetes, hypertension, nearsightedness, farsightedness, eye injury, or eye tumor, place you in a high risk. Be aware of your family history and get yourself screened regularly. Early onset of cataracts or glaucoma can be hereditary and early detection is key.

Regular eye exams. Adults 40- 65 should have their vision checked every one to two years; after 65, at least once a year. Comprehensive dilated eye exams detect problems early, when they’re easier to treat. An eye exam also ensures your eyeglasses or contact lenses prescription is up to date. Look for changes in your vision. Be cognoscente of noticeable changes such as double vision, hazy vision, difficulty seeing in low light conditions, red eyes, frequent flashes of light or eye pain and swelling. Speak with your doctor immediately about these changes. Exercise. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology, regular exercise - such as walking can reduce the risk of age-related macular degeneration by up to 70%. Be cautious of heavy lifting or bending activities, especially if you have a chronic illness or disability. Protect your eyes from harmful UV light. Always wear sunglasses or a brimmed hat that shields

your eyes from the sun. This may help reduce your risk of cataracts and other eye problems. Maintain a healthy diet. Studies have shown that antioxidants can possibly reduce the risk of cataracts. Load up on fruits, vegetables and omega-3. Dark green, yellow, and orange fruits and vegetables contain carotenoids, which may defend against several medical conditions, including glaucoma. Speak with your doctor about supplementing with eye vitamins to ensure you are getting adequate amounts of nutrients to keep your eyes healthy.
