Angels of Long Island is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization ran by Debbie and Brittany, a mother and daughter duo. They turned a small Facebook group into a fast growing non-profit organization that helps countless Long Islanders in need. Their non-profit continued to grow so much so that Debbie and Brittany decided to open up a storefront location in Patchogue called Angels of Long Island. Their slogan Neighbors helping neighbors is a great reflection of what this thriving thrift store/boutique/donation center does. “We work so hard to keep our store clean and beautiful so that all of our customers who walk through our doors feels a sense of dignity and respect shopping at our store,” says Debbie. “We are not like your average thrift store! We carry designer brands and offer a unique experience.” The mission of this non-profit is to assist and advocate for people in our Long Island community who are in need of assistance. Their goal is to empower people to overcome poverty and live prosperous lives. They truly provide a wide range of services and goods to people in crisis, however anyone can come shop at their Patchogue store, which has recently expanded, located at 350-23 East Main Street. The store is proud to take many types of donations. They now accept bottle and can donations every Monday-Saturday from 9AM-3PM, where you can simply pull up curbside, pop your trunk and a team member will take the donations for you. All bottles and cans must be marked New York state deposit and no broken glass bottles are able to be accepted. Please remember to separate glass items from plastic items before you donate them. Pickups at your residence are available for large quantities of recyclables. Additionally, they accept other donations, such as new or gently used clothing, housewares, home decor and

How To Plan A Winter Wedding

Summer was long known as the most popular season for weddings, but that trend has shifted in recent years. According to the 2020 WeddingWire Newlywed Report, 36 percent of couples get married in the fall, making autumn the most popular time to say “I do.” Though October and September are the two most popular months to marry, budget-conscious couples may want to consider getting married in winter. December, January and February are the least popular wedding months, but the experts at WeddingWire note that getting married during the slow season has its benefits. Central Islip High School Senior, Zen Ho Sang, has been named a semi-finalist in the annual Regeneron Science Talent Search (STS), the nation’s most prestigious science and mathematics competition for high school seniors. He was named one of 300 semi-finalists from a total of 1,760 applicants from across the United States. Zen Ho Sang’s extraordinary accomplishment is the result of his project entitled “Covariance Study of the Coronavirus Spike Protein”. His research uses a particular mathematical analysis for pairing amino acids a set distance away from each other as to correlate if the mutation occurs upstream, the the mutation downstream can be predicted as to conserve the 3D function of the protein. Using this mathematical model, it is hoped to predict the efficiency of the COVID-19 vaccine. Mr. Ho Sang’s research project earned him $2,000, and an additional $2,000 for Central Islip High School to be applied toward STEM related activities.

ngagement rings are often sizable investments. Money magazine reports the average engagement ring costs around $5,800. An engagement ring symbolizes the start of a lifelong commitment and may even set the tone for a couple’s wedding day. Jewelry styles are personal, and groomsto-be should carefully research their significant others’ preferences in terms of precious metals, colors and gemstones. Even though tradition holds that a diamond gemstone is classic for engagement rings, these precious stones are not the only options. In fact, before World War II, just 10 percent of proposals involved diamond engagement rings. That number jumped to 80 percent by 1990. However, many modern couples now lean toward other offerings not only for the uniqueness they provide, but also for the potential cost savings. Those seeking something unique
can embrace these engagement ring options. • Amethyst: This vibrant, lavender-hued stone can be breathtaking when cut the correct way. Purple shades have long been associated with royalty, making an amethyst fitting for such an occasion as special as an engagement. Because amethysts, which are less expensive than diamonds, are a seven on the Mohs scale for gemstone hardness, they can be very durable. • Knot rings: These rings do not have a center stone. Rather, they’re designed to be a tied knot or infinity symbol. These rings can be particularly sentimental as they represent true, unbroken love. • Opal: Gemstones, like flowers, have been assigned certain meanings. A Valentine’s Day proposal can be made even more special by presenting an engagement ring with a red gemstone. • Moissanite: The jewelry source Brilliant Earth says moissanite is a gemstone first discovered in 1893 by Henri Moissan in a meteorite that fell to earth. It is remarkably similar to a diamond in appearance and strength. Moissanite also has heightened brilliance, with a refractive index higher than that of a diamond. Precautions That Can Keep Wedding Guests Safe During The Pandemic

he outbreak of the novel coronavirus that began in the winter of 2019-20 and was ultimately declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization put many couples’wedding plans in peril. In an effort to stop the spread of the virus and protect those most vulnerable to it, governments across the globe placed restrictions on social gatherings, including weddings. Those restrictions prompted some couples to postpone their nuptials until 2021, while others tied the knot at considerably smaller ceremonies than they initially planned for. Couples planning to tie the knot in the months ahead can still do so, but the WHO recommends they take certain precautions as they organize their ceremonies and receptions. local • Confirm regulations. Restrictions related to COVID-19 differ greatly by region.
Areas that were not hit hard by the virus may not have as many restrictions in place as those that were devastated by the outbreak. In addition, cities or regions whose responses to the virus have been successful may have relaxed restrictions more than areas that are still struggling. The WHO notes the importance of checking local guidelines prior to planning an event, and that’s especially important for couples who hope to get married in towns or cities where they do not currently reside. • Keep guests up to date about precautions. Include detailed information about the safety measures that will be implemented during the wedding on your wedding website. Insert a card detailing this information into your invitation envelopes as well so all guests know what to expect when they accept the invitation. In addition, remind guests of the safety
precautions throughout the ceremony. • Provide sanitary supplies. Make sure hand sanitizer, soap, water, and masks are readily available for all guests. Social distance markers also can be placed on the ground throughout the venue to make it easy for guests to stay six feet apart from one another. • Choose an outdoor venue. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that the COVID-19 virus spreads very easily through person-to-person contact and that the risk of spreading the virus is greater when spending time indoors. Couples can mitigate some of that risk by tying the knot outdoors and then hosting an outdoor reception where tables are kept at least six feet apart. Weddings will be different until the world puts COVID-19 in its rearview mirror. In the meantime, it’s up to happy couples to keep their guests safe come the big day.

I t’s likely that few people heard of “social
distancing” prior to 2020. That changed as the novel coronavirus COVID-19 spread rapidly across the globe and the world found itself in the midst of a deadly pandemic. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines social distancing as keeping a safe distance of at least six feet between yourself and other people who are not from your household. Public health officials continue to champion social distancing while acknowledging the fatigue that many people have experienced as the pandemic stretched on for months. Though much of the world hit the proverbial pause button, life went on during the pandemic. Perhaps nowhere was that more evident than at the altar, where many couples still tied the knot, albeit in scaled back ceremonies that adhered to social distancing guidelines in their communities. Engaged couples who have yet to tie the knot no doubt recognize that planning a socially distant wedding will not be the
same as organizing more traditional ceremonies and receptions. While planning a socially distant wedding presents some unique challenges, couples can take certain steps to ensure their big day is memorable and safe. • Spread the socially distant word. Let guests know what they’re in for should they decide to take part in the festivities. Many people have strictly followed social distancing guidelines, while others have been reluctant to do so. Couples intent on keeping themselves and their guests safe from COVID-19 should emphasize that their weddings will be socially distant affairs so there’s no confusion come the big day. • Stream the wedding online. Stream the wedding online for those guests who won’t be in attendance. By the end of 2020, millions of people had already “attended” weddings via platforms like Zoom, so loved ones may be experienced virtual guests by the time couples walk down the aisle in 2021. Couples who may need some help
planning virtual affairs can visit the virtual wedding coordinators at Wedfuly.com, who recently partnered with Zoom to help couples bring their ceremonies online. • Pare down the inperson guest list. Couples who planned large weddings prior to the pandemic can still invite all of their loved ones to witness the festivities online, but pare down the in-person guest list to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19. Limit in-person guests to immediate family and those people who are part of your social distancing bubble. • Plan a party for down the road. Couples can still celebrate their nuptials with family and friends down the road. Plan a post-pandemic reception and let guests know you will fill them in on the details once social distancing restrictions have been lifted. Socially distant weddings may require couples to take some unusual steps as they try to tie the knot while keeping themselves and their loved ones safe.

Some generous donors also opted to do their own shopping and deliver wrapped gifts or gift cards to the Y for distribution. “The Y is able to work directly with low-income families in our community to identify the families’ specific needs and wants. We gather information on the children; their interests, clothing sizes, and wishes for holiday gifts. We learn what the parents or guardians’ needs are such as helping with their rent or putting food on the table for dinner”, says Bob Pettersen, Executive Director at the Great South Bay YMCA. He adds, “We try and give the kids something special for Christmas morning and give support to parents who under such stress during the holidays. They want to give their children the best but are so overwhelmed with bills and other various challenges. In 2020, the need to help our neighbors was simply greater than ever.” More than $42,000 was raised in December alone through the Great South Bay YMCA’s Annual Campaign to adopt twenty local families for this holiday season, and provide families with access to Y programs and services through scholarships. Twenty-five children received special gifts under

the tree and their parents received much needed relief. With coronavirus upending life, the Great South Bay Y focused on providing relief for children of essential workers, families with children who were remote learning, and families experiencing tremendous financial hardships. In addition to the gift cards, wrapped donated toys, and food relief, the Y donated Chromebooks to families who did not have the resources needed for their children in a virtual learning environment due to the pandemic. A recipient of the AdoptA-Family initiative said, “I just needed a break. Life has been so hard this year with COVID. I can’t keep up. These generous gifts brought me relief, and more importantly, joy to my children, because they really needed it this year. Every holiday season, the Great South Bay YMCA orchestrates their Adopt-AFamily initiative to provide support to local families in need. But in early December 2020 as COVID-19 cases surged and unemployment rates reached recordbreaking highs, countless local families grew more concerned with their daily living expenses rather than fulfilling their traditional rituals of holiday dinner and gift exchanges. The “spirit of giving” became a touchstone in the early months of the pandemic and the Great South Bay YMCA tapped into their nearly thirty years of fundraising for the Y’s cause-driven mission, the dedication of their leadership team, and the generosity of its community to plan their efforts in new and different ways knowing this year would be like no other. To commence the AdoptA-Family initiative, the Great South Bay YMCA identified local families in need, in collaboration with the school districts they serve for Before & After School programs, volunteer leaders, Y staff and members, and corporate and foundation partners to raise funds for the holiday giving season. A portion of the financial donations made to the YMCA Annual Campaign allowed the Y to do holiday shopping to provide gifts and food on the “wish list” to

East Islip High School student Isabella Avitable was recently selected for the 2021 National Art Honor Society/National Junior Art Honor Society Juried Exhibition, held annually by the National Art Education Association. Avitable’s piece, “Lavender Hotel Room,” was one of only 93
works chosen out of 1,187 submissions. Representatives from eight member schools of the Association of Independent Colleges of Art and Design participated as jurors for the NAHS/ NJAHS . In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the NAEA has transitioned to a completely virtual
exhibition, which opens on Jan. 11. “It’s such an honor to be chosen and represent the East Islip National Art Honor Society,” said Avitable. “I chose to create this piece because I’m into interior design and I want to pursue that for college.”

Caring for pets helps seniors maintain a routine. Having structure after retirement can be important to ward off risk of depression. Staying on top of feeding, grooming and other pet needs also can help prevent cognitive decline.
