December’s book for JFK was Brother Eagle, Sister Sky, by Susan Jeffers, illustrating the character trait of “respect.” Each class recognized a student who exemplified this trait. Winter is coming. Winter is coming. So the humans have been saying for the last three months, and yet… only now, in the final week of January, have I gotten to witness firsthand this magical white stuff in action. And what a beauty it is, even from the confines of my tiny betta bowl. Swirling snowflakes, blowing through the air, piling up outside my window to the outside world… and my human, fervently shoveling out her electric blue car – what a fine color it is, I might add – as the wind whips across the parking lot. But still, the opportunity
to hibernate with my human for an entire weekend, to have her undivided attention while we relaxed together and watched Netflix on the couch – that was priceless. We just finished Season 1 of House of Cards and I’m already, excuse the pun, “hooked.” I must admit, I didn’t understand the obsession with scouring the stores for every last container of milk, carton of eggs and loaf of bread at first. But then I realized the horror of not being able to make French toast for an entire day, and I understood the magnitude of such a storm and the havoc it could wreak on the masses. Just the thought of a day without flakes was

In the middle of the game, the score is 28 to 30. Our team is losing by three points. When the game starts, our team gets the ball first. My teammate passes me the ball; the opponents are jumping on top of me. They smell like smelly socks, and you can hear the dribbling noise of the ball as it is bounced on the ground. I had to cross the opponents over, and then I was about to shoot from the three-point line. I felt the rough rubber material with a flick of my wrist. The ball was slowly rolling around the rim, acting like it didn’t want to go in.

Teens for Jeans groups and businesses to support the Teens for Jeans campaign by donating new or used jeans in good condition (any size) at one of Islip’s local drop-off sites between January 29th and February 26th. The locations of the drop off sites are: • Town of Islip Youth Bureau, 401 Main

Veterans Assistance Programs Islip Town Councilman John Cochrane, Jr., wishes to remind local veterans of the many services that the Town of Islip can provide to those who have served our country. Councilman Cochrane - a Navy veteran - has spearheaded the Town’s efforts to better serve those who have protected our nation. One of the latest programs is the PFC Joseph R. Dwyer Project, a PTSD support service group aimed at helping veterans cope with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The program, which began in 2015, has met with success and praise by the veteran community. “PTSD impacts many
veterans returning from overseas deployments and can have a serious and detrimental effect on their lives,” said Councilman Cochrane. “This is a unique program that can make a real difference and provide support to those who have sacrificed so much.” The PFC Joseph R. Latest Edition of Islip’s War Journal - The latest edition of Islip’s War Journal is the continuation of the past Islip War Journals, which focused on WWII, Korea and Vietnam. The latest edition is slated to chronicle the actions of
all combat veterans who have served in the first Gulf War to the present War on Terror. Forms for submission may be downloaded from the Town’s website at www. islipny.gov. Click the link “Veterans Affairs” then click the sentence that says “Councilman Cochrane’s office to lead New Editions of Islip’s “Journals of War Veterans”. Forms can also be obtained by visiting the Councilman’s office at 655 Main Street, Islip, first floor, west wing. Obtaining Important Documents – Any veterans, or family members of veterans, hoping to access military benefits must have their service records in
order and readily available. The most important of these documents is their DD214/Honorable Discharge papers. If any veteran or family member of a veteran is having trouble obtaining this document, contact Councilman Cochrane’s office at 631.224.5559. Councilman Cochrane also strongly encourages veterans to register their DD214 with the Suffolk County Clerk to ensure that a backup document is on file. Recognition for Cold War Service – Veterans who wish to receive a Cold War Recognition Certificate can visit Councilman Cochrane’s office (655
Main Street, Islip) to fill out the application form. To be eligible, an applicant must have been a veteran serving at least one day during the Cold War era, (September 2nd, 1945 to December, 1991) and did not receive a less than honorable discharge. Councilman Cochrane’s office will assist any veteran with obtaining a copy of their DD214 for proof of service. Just bring any military information you have to the Councilman’s office at 655 Main Street, Islip. So Cari filled in the blank with the only profession she had dreamed of since elementary school,
becoming a professional soccer player. “I never thought it was actually in reach,” she said. “But as I grew up, it became so much more realistic.” With her club team, Albertson Fury ‘93, Cari won the 2009 and 2011 State Open Cup titles as well as the 2009 Region 1 championship and 2011 Region 1 Premier League division championship. She was a 2009 addition to the Long Island Fury and helped lead the team to the Women’s Premier Soccer League national championship that season plus played on the New York Fury of WPSL Elite in 2012. Both teams were coached by her youth coach, Paul Riley. “Cari’s biggest asset is her desire to be the best,” added Coach Riley. “She
never accepted anything else and on the Fury, we insisted that she pushed all her limits. We are extremely proud of Cari and are convinced she will have the impact in the league like our six other graduates in the NWSL have done.” The 2011 Newsday Girls Soccer Player of the Year has experienced international success as well when the United States won the Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Japan in 2012. Cari was the youngest starter for the USA. Playing as a midfielder and defender at Notre Dame, Cari was honored as Soccer America National Freshman of the Year and Soccer America First-Team MVP, or in other words, an All-American.
