We all deal with increases in expenses all the time. We recently learned that the minimum wage was increased to $10.00 per hour in our area, and it will continue to increase to up to $15.00 per hour by 2021. These types of increases are a result of decisions from our elected officials. On the surface, many people think this is good and fair; but when you delve deeper, you may find that it might not be so good after all. All businesses, including small businesses, must now figure out a way to deal with these increased costs. They now must decide how much of these costs their business can absorb and how much must now be passed on to the consumer. Many businesses are

still dealing with the large increases in their health care costs. Many businesses will be forced to eliminate positions, as well as minimize some of their services. Ultimately, it is the consumer who will be adversely affected by all of this. Let’s all hope for better days ahead! We have an opportunity with our new administration to cut the size of government and its excessive spending and waste. We have an opportunity to limit government control and waste in many areas such as healthcare, education, student loans and social service benefits. Able Americans should be in control of their own destinies, working and earning their own way in this world, and not

being enabled to rely on government handouts which ultimately become yet another cost to all of us hard working taxpayers. Government assistance is meant for those who are truly in need of and deserving of the help. These less fortunate Americans are the only ones who should be allowed to benefit from these costly government services. So, if you find yourself having to pay more for a product or service, or you seem to be waiting longer and longer for assistance in places of business or of government service, realize where this all started, and who is paying for all the wasteful government spending. It is US, THE TAXPAYERS.

Finding Zen By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

I recently found out that my yoga studio, the one I have been frequenting for the last several years, will be closing come the end of February. Sure, there are other studios, other forms of meditation that can be explored; but this was my studio, the one I had come to regard as a sanctuary of sorts, a respite from the oftstressful daily grind. When I began taking classes there, some three or four years ago, my goal was to attend one, two – even three – sessions per week, at all different levels, in an effort to explore this newfound hobby. I had originally decided to look into the practice after

“retiring” from dancing for the previous 20 years, and determined that yoga would be the perfect combination of strength and conditioning, balance and relaxation, that I needed. Of course, my grand plans eventually dwindled down to about once a week, as I found a regular class that I loved. Every Wednesday (or as many as I could manage to make it to), I would look forward to those 75 minutes of guided technique and mental cleansing. Certainly, anyone can undertake the basic yoga stretches and breathing techniques on his/her own; but there is definitely something about a structured class which brings a whole new level to

the practice. And so, come March, I will need to find a new venue to attend, a new haven to explore this ancient ritual, which has so very many benefits in the modern world. How glad I am that I ventured into that particular studio all those years ago, and how very appreciative I am of the community of fellow “yogis” that I have come to know and respect. Here’s hoping that I find a new home for my hobby, one as welcoming and fulfilling and full of inspiration. ‘Til then, I shall savor these remaining weeks in my old familiar studio, surrounded by familiar faces; and I shall take a deep breath and appreciate all the goodness yoga has brought to my life.

Remembering Vets During the group’s holiday celebration, Islip High School’s Junior Chamber of Commerce Club members found time to remember those in need. While sharing home-baked treats, the students wrote

Christmas and Hanukkah cards for disabled veterans. The cards were given to the Islip American Legion Auxiliary Unit 411 for delivery to several veterans homes on Long Island. “The students wanted

our local veterans to know that they were especially remembered during this holiday season,” said teacher and club adviser Renee Clock.

Families worked alongside teachers to familiarize themselves with many educational resources that are accessible on-line and, best of all, for free! At the end of the evening two tablets REMEMBERING VETS - Islip High School’s Junior Chamber of Commerce Club and two Leap Frog devices members wrote Christmas and Hanukkah cards for local disabled veterans. Athletes Helping Athletes

NATIVE WORKSHOP - The fourth graders at South Country were recently able to experience first-hand what life was like for the Native Americans of Long Island. Hoyt Farm sent representatives to conduct a workshop with our students. During the workshop, students were able to help cook corn cakes, touch artifacts and animal skins, and dress up in costumes. They also had their faces painted using special clay and sang a song to help corn grow while playing handmade instruments.

On Thursday, December 1st, Mary G. Clarkson School hosted an informative parent workshop on technology. Parents from across primary grade levels participated in learning about technology programs that are utilized to support the K-2 curriculum in all

Starting Strong The math team at Bay Shore High School is a group of motivated young minds that compete against others in the county, completing rigorous math problems. They meet locally, but then their scores are tallied up, and they are ranked within Suffolk County. Currently, approximately 100 teams compete. The team started this year strong, with senior Justin Allen going 6 for 6, a first since the team was reinstated three years ago. Seniors Tom Wiig, Emma Mangels, and Nathan Chowdhury were also strong competitors.

Most kids collect Halloween candy with plans in mind to sort it and maybe trade for their favorite kinds. But two students at South Country School had a different idea. Brothers Luca and Rocco Ferrandino, collected candy for Operation Gratitude, which sends it to our troops overseas. 6th in Rochester New York. Genevieve, a cellist, was chosen to perform with the Symphonic Orchestra. Alexa, a violinist, performed with the String Orchestra. Two Bay Shore High School students, Christopher Bellino and Paul Brown won the annual

Wrestlers Win Big East Islip High School’s varsity wrestling team competed in the Paul P. Grammatico Tournament at Valley Stream South High School last month, finishing in second place overall and boasting eight place winners. Junior Nick Picece (126

Wide-eyed angels and sceptered shepherds from SSCM School gifted the parish community with a special School Mass just before the Christmas break. The assembly was complete with donkeys, camels, sheep, the Three Wise Men, Joseph, Mother Mary and Baby Jesus. Mrs. Cora McGerald worked for months with the first and second grade students to treat

the congregation to songs, prayer, poems and a reenactment of the Nativity Story. With a homily focused on how Jesus is the reason for the season, young and old alike attending the Mass felt a little closer to the true spirit of Christmas. Continuing to the true end of the Christmas season, students performed a magnificent musical and play just

before the Ephiphany or Three Kings Day Under the talented tutelage of Mrs. Angela Sandkuhl, the entire school stepped up to take part in a beautiful performance, reminding us all that although the 12 Days of Christmas had been at a close, each of us can live as if it is Christmas every day, with joy in our hearts and charity in our thoughts and actions.

Spirited Students Stevens, the band tackled a sprightly selection of holiday classics at each stop, which included the Connetquot and Ruth C. Kinney elementary schools; the district office, where they performed for administrators; and the Early Childhood Center,

where they played for students of the South Shore Preschool for Early Childhood Education. At each site, Stevens also presented a brief history and demonstration of all the band instruments.

Passion for Music East Islip’s hardworking and talented music students displayed the results of their studies at a series of six impressive winter concerts held in December at the high school’s Rydzeski Hall. During the prior months, students from the high school, middle school, and John F. Kennedy and Ruth C. Kinney elementary schools practiced at home and attended numerous

rehearsals and lessons, all in preparation for their performances in front of family and friends. “Our music students demonstrated a high level of musicianship and professionalism in their winter concerts,” said Giovanna Ruggiero, the high school’s orchestra director. “They achieved this through their consistent dedication and passion for music. I am

so proud of the hard work each student displayed and I look forward to hearing continued musical growth in upcoming performances.” JFK Orchestra Director Jaime DeMaria said, “The concert was a huge success and we all can’t wait to see what these spectacular students can do in the spring.”

School to Careers Islip High School’s School to Careers Partnership hosted its first Freshman Career Exploration Workshop on December 15th, including participation by the entire ninth-grade student body. Suffolk County Legislator Tom Cilmi kicked off the event with a keynote address. Freshmen then moved to breakout sessions where each group listened to four different presenters from a variety of professions and career fields, including engineering and architecture, homeland

security, law enforcement, firefighting, community outreach, radiology, political science, computer engineering, business and finance, education, media and communications, military and health care. Students were grouped based on career interest surveys that were given earlier in the year. “It was a great day for both the students and the community, as we were able to expose each freshman to a wide variety of careers and occupations,” said Assistant Principal Curtis Juengerkes, whose

A New Role

Paul Manzo has been named the East Islip School District’s new assistant superintendent for instruction and personnel, replacing the recently retired Alise Becker-Santa. Manzo comes to East Islip after a distinguished 14-year career at Sachem Central School District, where he served as assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction, assistant

superintendent for administration and building administrator. Before Sachem, he worked as a building administrator for Hicksville Public Schools, a guidance counselor for Bay Shore Schools and a teacher in New York City public schools. He has been a member of the U.S. Army Reserve for 31 years. After obtaining his bachelor’s degree in foreign language from LIU Post,

Shopping for the Season During this holiday season, members of East Islip High School’s varsity softball team shopped for 12 Amityville children who currently live in homeless shelters. The softball players met at Target, where they received a “Dear Santa” list from coach Jason McGowan, and shopped

until their Christmas list was filled. The event was sponsored by the Christmas Magic program. “I loved shopping for my kid,” said senior Courtney Greene. “It’s a great feeling knowing that he woke up Christmas morning with a bunch of toys.” “I had a great time shopping for my person

and I hope she liked the clothes that I picked out for her,” said senior Jackie Carty. “This annual event that we do as a team teaches my athletes not to take life for granted, and to appreciate how lucky they are to be in the situation that they are in,” said McGowan.
