The clerk went on to list the bizarre scenarios she had witnessed over these last several weeks - from people juggling glass bottles (an attempt which, needless to say, didn’t end so well) to the woman who insisted on cradling about 5 pounds of meat in her arms. All to save a nickel. I have to admit, I was only vaguely aware that this proposed law was set to take effect until I found myself running into the store for some last minute New Year’s Eve snacks. Only then did I see the signs warning of the impending surcharge posted at each register, plastered on every entrance and exit, along with racks of “reusable” plastic bags for sale at each counter. I did some quick math: so, if I buy an allegedly sturdier bag for 10¢ - assuming I get more than two uses out of it, I’ll be

I considered further the fact that, nearly every time I am in any sort of store but especially those of the supermarket variety - I am repeatedly amazed at the lack of, shall we say, bagging skills employed by most clerks. I invariably wind up with either 27 bags with one or two items in each, or the equally daunting 20 pound bag filled to the brim and unlikely to make it to the car without breaking, let alone up a flight of stairs into my apartment. I’ll bag my own, thanks, I always request. And now, if I’m going to pay for them, you can be sure I’ll be taking matters into my own hands. Preferably without an armful of glass bottles and pork chops to contend with as well. Just when food shopping was beginning to become routine…

with Jamie Lynn Ryan Seen at the local supermarket last week: a gentleman piling each one of his items into his cart, refusing to pay the 5¢ plastic bag fee that was recently passed in Suffolk County. “Nope,” he shook his head vigorously. “I’ll throw it all in my backseat and carry every single item into my house by hand if I have to.” The checkout clerk, somewhat perplexed, acquiesced. “Alright,” she replied politely. “Whatever you’d prefer - that’s why we ask if you’d like a bag.” As he rolled his overflowing shopping cart away, fellow clerks exchanged raised eyebrows and shrugged. “It’s one thing when they have a handful of items, but $300 worth of food and perishables?” She seemed incredulous. “That’s really standing on principle.”

What is Catholic Schools Week? Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. It starts the last Sunday in January, which in 2018 is January 28th, and runs through February 3th. The theme for the Catholic Schools Week 2018 is “Learn. Serve. Lead. Succeed.” Schools typically observe the annual celebration week with Masses, open houses and other activities for students, families, parishioners and community members. Through these events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contributions to our church, our communities and our nation. LIGHTHOUSE MISSION!

“Providing Hope Beyond The Food” … this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. This non-profit reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor. Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry, and the story of his journey to become so is so inspiring that it left me speechless. After meeting with him and touring their quite busy facility, located at 1543 Montauk Highway in Bellport, I was extremely moved by all that I learned about and saw. Lighthouse Mission is a registered nonprofit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help. Their Food Outreach operates weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www. LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Pastor Jim Ryan

mentioned to me that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile matter because the Gospel tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him. Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so. They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. If you are interested in coming with a group to a Food Outreach event or are interested in volunteering at a Youth Outreach Event, please call their office at 631.758.7584 first for more information.

The mission of the Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation is to provide tuition assistance for families who want their children to attend a Catholic elementary school, but need financial help to make it possible. The Tomorrow’s Hope Foundation solicits donations from individuals and corporations, and allocates that money to families based on financial need. A Tomorrow’s Hope grant is awarded anonymously to the family to offset the tuition cost based on family income

and expenses. Alternately, through the Tomorrow’s Hope STAR Program, specific individual students are paired off with a STAR donor on a direct one-toone basis. STAR program donors agree to contribute $2,500 a year in a donor/ student relationship that often lasts for the duration of the child’s elementary school journey. STAR donors and ‘their students’ have an ongoing dialogue and the donor gets to hear about, and participate in the academic career of a student.

The event series is inspired by Atria StoryWise, TACKLING MATH - Brook Avenue School scholars know how to solve tough math Atria’s latest intentionally problems! StoryWise is a collection of thoughtfully curated topics and cues designed to spark memories, tap into personal experiences and help people everywhere connect more deeply through the power of storytelling. It was given as a boxed set of cards to Atria residents and families, and is available to everyone as a free iPhone app. The app allows users to record, share and keep their stories. Yesterday’s event doubled as a fundraiser to benefit our nation’s most prized story repositories – libraries. Until January 31st, Atria will donate $1 for every story shared through the wisdom library in the Atria StoryWise app to the American Library Association. The association’s work

Animal educator and journalist Victoria Bonavita recently paid a special visit to Mrs. Sobotko’s fourth grade class at Northeast Elementary School in Brentwood to listen to the students share stories about their pets for an upcoming article she’s writing for L.I. Pet Lover magazine. When she arrived, Victoria was given a very warm welcome from both faculty and students. After introducing herself to the class, she went around the room listening to the students tell their stories. Some shared the names of their pets, others how they got them. Some, who didn’t have pets,

told Victoria about the pets they would like to have and others shared stories about their favorite animals. Victoria also told the students about her recent trip to Michigan, where she interviewed The Incredible Dr. Pol, and about the time Jack Hanna gave her an opportunity to sit in a room and play with two baby cheetahs. Some of the students, including Ronald Beltran, Esteban Quiceno, Leslie Saravia, Michael Pichardo, Jazmin Alcantara, Erick Guevara and Johan Guandique, brought Victoria a beautiful handwritten story about why they love their pets. Victoria, now fourteen,

began her work as an educator when she was just ten years old. At the time, she wanted to share her knowledge of her favorite pets – chickens with her fifth grade class. SCHOLAR RECOGNIZED - Bay Shore High School senior Camryn Garrett was recognized with an Honorable Mention in the Celebration of Suburban Diversity 2017 Student Essay Contest. The contest, created by the National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University and sponsored by Bethpage Federal Credit Union, looks for students to demonstrate a knowledge and keen interpretation of diversity issues facing Long Island for future generations.

The School Library Journal Leadership Summit is an annual event that brings together school librarians, education leaders, tech innovators, administrators, authors, publishers and vendors. The 2017 Summit took place in Nashville, Tennessee, where

attendees, from across the country gained insight into the evolving and critical role of librarians and took part in learning from peer leaders. Bay Shore Middle School librarian Kristina Holzweiss and Gardiner Manor School librarian Doreen Shultz were invited

by School Library Journal to moderate a makerspace playground where librarians participated in hands-on activities to donate to charities, learned how to create simple circuits with LED lights and batteries, and took photos in front of the green screen.

Lego League Qualifiers LEGO robots that will best address the “Challenge” set forth in FIRST HYDRO DYNAMICSSM. For this challenge, students were tasked with identifying a problem within the human water cycle and finding a solution to the problem. Examples might include something as simple as quenching one’s thirst or swimming

in a pool, or as complicated as how water is used to produce food, energy and even technology, among other things. Once a problem was identified, the students then evaluated current solutions and subsequently designed, built and tested an innovative solution, using a LEGO MINDSTORMS® kit, that adds value to

society. The students will then present the solution during one of six different Qualifier tournaments being held as follows: Great Hollow Middle School • Saturday, January 20 | 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. • Saturday, January 20 | 1 to 6 p.m. • Sunday, January 21 | 8

Leading up to the 50th anniversary of the Apollo Space Program, the Cradle of Aviation’s “Countdown to Apollo at 50” celebration will feature exciting new exhibits, school initiatives and community programs for people of all ages, designed to celebrate the Apollo Space Program and the 50th anniversary of the first successful Apollo mission which took place on July 20th, 1969. The celebration will also pay special tribute to Long Island’s critical role in the success of America’s space missions. The Countdown to Apollo at 50 program is sponsored in part with the generous support of the Robert D.L. Gardiner Foundation and Bethpage Federal Credit Union. NASA Engineer to Visit

The Cradle of Aviation Museum is proud to welcome back to Long Island, one of the world’s most authoritative figures on Mars, Kobie Boykins, a passionate NASA engineer on the front lines of Mars Exploration. Boykins will be on Long Island

on February 6th, 2018 for “Exploring Mars: The Next Generation,” an informative and enlightening event about the current scientific investigation of our nearest neighbor, Mars. The “Exploring Mars” event is the first school initiative

to be held at the Cradle of Aviation Museum as part of the museum’s “Countdown to Apollo at 50” year-long celebration. A mechanical engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Boykins helped design and build the solar arrays that have enabled the Mars Rovers currently in space to remain on Mars long after their planned 90day investigative journey. A recipient of the NASA Exceptional Service Medal, one of the highest honors given by NASA, Boykins is also intimately involved with the latest venture to Mars, the Mars Science Laboratory, better known as Curiosity. Currently making headlines with evidence that conditions on Mars, including the presence of water, once could have supported life, Boykins is a lead supervisor on the initiative. Now on a mission to bring his passion for space exploration to students and teachers worldwide, Boykins will meet with over 400 students, educators and fascinated space enthusiasts from across Long Island and Brooklyn at the Cradle of

Aviation’s unique, handson event. Boykins will recount the challenges and triumphs of the Mars Rover Exploration mission, share insight into Curiosity’s findings, and share remarkable images and discoveries that continue to come to us from the Red Planet. Participating schools include South Huntington’s Stimson Middle School, Franklin Square’s Polk Street School, Freeport’s New Visions School and Giblyn Elementary School, Levittown’s Wisdom Lane Middle School, Baldwin High School and Brooklyn Technical High School. Pediatric patients at the Cohen’s Children’s Medical Center will also participate in the event live, by video conference, through the Cradle of Aviation’s support of the Companions in Courage Foundation.
