High School on Dec. 3. The Anil John Basketball Tournament honors threeyear varsity basketball player and IHS Class of 2015 graduate Anil John, who lost his life in a tragic accident in 2015. After John’s death, his uniform number 22 was retired from the basketball program, and the team
collaborated with the Islip Booster Club to name the annual tournament in his memory. The district congratulates Kaeli on this outstanding athletic accomplishment and wishes her continued success during the 2021 basketball season.
TORRES SIGNS WITH EAST STROUDSBURG - East Islip High School senior Jayson Torres signed a national letter of intent on Dec. 12 to play baseball for East Stroudsburg University. He plans to major in physical education and health education. A three-year member of the Redmen varsity team, Torres is also a two-way player, serving both as pitcher and first baseman. Irene Cummings has seen a lot in her 100 years on this blue marble. Cummings, who was born New Year’s Day, 1922, enjoyed a long marriage to Edward Cummings and together they raised three daughters and four sons. Brooklynite Irene, who was working as a telephone operator for The New York Telephone Company in Manhattan, met Edward through his oldest brother, who thought they’d be a good match. Joe was right, as Irene and Edward, who married in 1943, were happily married for 63 years. Edward, a former U.S. Marine, also was a retired New York City Police officer. Irene, who for many years was a stayat-home mom, often joked that she couldn’t have raised four sons if she hadn’t had three daughters first, remembers youngest daughter Barbara Ruggiero of East Islip. Irene never learned to drive, so Edward would drive her to work before they married and acted as her chauffeur throughout their marriage. After retiring from the Police Department, he went to work for Pan Am and that’s when the family became world travelers, thanks to his job perk of free airline tickets for the whole family. “We all flew for free,” Ruggiero says. Irene and Edward saw a lot of the world and were particularly fond of San Juan, Puerto Rico, Spain, Majorca and Russia, which they visited multiple times. In fact, they were among the first to visit Russia when it reopened to the world. It was their goal to see as much of the world as they could. In between taking to the air, Irene worked at a children’s clothing store. Edward often said she took her paycheck in clothing, bringing home gifts for her 24 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren.
“They were the most beautiful clothing,” Ruggiero remembers. “But Dad never complained about taking her to work and picking her up. They had a great relationship. I remember her saying they were such good friends.” The two eventually moved to Sarasota, Fla., where they lived for 18 years until Edward became sick with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. The children, who all lived in New York, asked them to come back North so the children could assist with his care. He died in 2006. Irene lived on her own until two years ago when walking became an issue after an adverse reaction to some medicine she was taking. She now is a long-term care patient at Momentum at South Bay for Rehabilitation and Nursing in East Islip. Ruggiero says part of her mom’s secret to longevity is likely that she doesn’t worry much and never did.
“I remember when we’d go on vacation out to Shelter Island and some of us kids would go out on a boat all day and all she’d say is be home in time for dinner,” Ruggiero says. “That was one of the few things she was a stickler about, that we all ate meals together.”

sure all wishes are granted. It is the most rewarding feeling in the world to put a smile on someone’s face when they are facing hardship. I’m so happy we can do what we do.” Michele Stylianos, School Counselor and Homeless Liaison for the Brentwood School District, identified ten families she felt would benefit the most from participation. Once identified, Stylianos worked with the families to create a list of gifts that she shared with Dawn, who often manages charitable events for the Widex team. Stylianos says that many of the recipients end up homeless or in transitional housing situations due to a tragic event. Some experience financial hardship like eviction or losing their home to a fire, while others have dealt with the death of a loved
one. Each family received items they needed like coats, clothing or shoes, and items they wanted — especially for the children — like toys and games. “What Widex does for our community is huge,” Stylianos said. “They put so much heart into all the work they do with us. No one at Widex knows these families personally. They just see a wish or a need and they make it happen. It really is a tribute to the type of organization they are.” Widex hand-delivered the wrapped gifts to Stylianos. All items were then picked up or delivered to families by Stylianos in the days leading up to Christmas. This effort follows a virtual school supply drive that Widex hosted for the district earlier this year.

Making A Difference With Bologna Sandwiches First grade students in Justin Lollo’s class at Wing Elementary School in the Islip School District took a bite out of hunger this holiday season by making 184 bologna sandwiches for Bethany House, a shelter in Bay Shore. Mr. Lollo has been hosting the community service project since 2018, and he happily reported that the students broke the old record by
making 47 additional sandwiches this year. In addition to learning their core subjects, the first graders discussed and learned that there are people in the community who are struggling. “I want my students to realize that there are people who are less fortunate than we are, and they might find it difficult having enough money to obtain food,
clothing, etc.,” Mr. Lollo explained. “In preparing bologna sandwiches, students can feel a sense of giving and make a difference by supporting those who are less fortunate.” Mr. Lollo also thanks Grilli’s Gourmet Deli and Catering for donating the bologna for the project.

Last month, hearing technology pioneer Widex USA worked with Long Island’s Brentwood School District to ensure the district’s families in need had gifts in time for Christmas. Widex sponsored ten families through their “Wish Tree Drive.” They provided a “wish list” and company employees selected a family to buy for. Overall, this was the third year the Hauppaugebased company supported Brentwood during the holiday season. “We have established a wonderful relationship with this district and it’s a pleasure to be working with them again to help families and their children,” said Dawn Perry, Project Manager, Customer Experience at Widex USA and organizer of the drive. “We do our best to make

LEGISLATOR FLOTTERON HONORS ISLIP TERRACE EAGLE SCOut Legislator Steven J. Flotteron recognized Neel Patel of Troop 327 sponsored by Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church in Islip Terrace for earning the rank of Eagle Scout in a ceremony held at St. Peter the Apostle Church. Neel demonstrated leadership with his service project by designing and building a bridge across a stream near the Fish Hatchery at Connetquot State Park. He also led a group of Scouts and adults to replace a railing along a handicap-access fishing platform. He is a graduate of East Islip High School and is currently attending SUNY Clarkson University where he is studying Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering. Co-Workers Donate Toys And Send Cards To Neighbors Across Long Island
The holidays were a little brighter across Long Island, thanks to the generosity and thoughtfulness of PSEG Long Island employees. By participating in the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree Program, an employee-led toy drive and a holiday greeting card campaign, dozens of coworkers helped spread cheer and hope this holiday season for neighbors in need. More than 120 co-workers fulfilled holiday wishes for 105 Suffolk County children enrolled in the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program. From bikes, tablets and video games, to toys, dolls and action figures, several hundred gifts were donated in all. A handful of PSEG Long Island employees also helped distribute the goodies and load clients’ vehicles the week before Christmas at the Salvation Army’s Riverhead headquarters. Here’s what some employees said about participating: “I am happy to carry on this tradition that my family started when I was a kid,” said Ashley Arndt of Dix Hills. “We always sponsored a family in need and it felt so good to support these sweet
boys and girls. I am thankful that PSEG Long Island is committed to supporting our community and helping our neighbors and friends. This company makes it easy to help so many diverse people across Long Island.” “Being raised by a single mom of three children, I remember how important it was for my mom to have access to a program like this that would allow for a few more gifts to be put under the tree on Christmas morning, said Brittney Schmidt of Smithtown. “I am happy that now I’m able to give to other families. I am also grateful to work for a company that values the importance to giving back to our communities.” “Participating in the Salvation Army Angel Tree Program over the years has always been a rewarding experience that brings to light the spirit of Christmas,” said Diane Finocchio of Farmingdale. “I’ve been supporting the Angel Tree program since my start with PSEG Long Island,” said Krysten Acevedo of Center Moriches. “I do it because I hate the idea of a child waking up on Christmas
morning to nothing under their tree and wondering what it was they did to get on Santa’s naughty list.” The Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program serves Long Island children from newborn to 16 years old, and relies on the support of individual donors, companies and organizations to make lasting impressions by fulfilling the wish lists of children and families who might otherwise not receive gifts. During the past eight years, PSEG Long Island employees have donated presents to more than 1,200 families who live in the company’s service area. It’s just one of the many ways in which the company gives back to the community. An employee-led toy collection drive was also hosted. More than $1,600 in dolls, board games, electronic toys, trucks, gift cards and more were given to the following organizations to distribute to local children and their families: In Suffolk County: • Bellport Hagerman East Patchogue Alliance in Bellport • Family Service League in Mastic •First Presbyterian Church of Northport • Gerald Ryan Outreach Center in Wyandanch • Lighthouse Mission in Bellport • Sunshine Alternative

holiday cheer in the form of greeting cards. Nearly 1,000 PSEG Long Island employees participated, offering their own personal holiday messages in the cards that featured the image of a snowy PSEG Long Island bucket truck. The cards were delivered along with candy canes, LED night lights or large print puzzle books to the organizations above, as well as the following: • The Bristal Assisted Living communities across the area • EAC Network Senior Community Service Center in North Merrick and distributed through the agency’s Meals on Wheels program • Glen Cove Senior Center • Glen Cove YMCA • Northport Veterans

Each gift bag included a winter hat, gloves, socks, boxer shorts and a T-shirt. “These gifts went directly to help a very underserved population of people in recovery,” said French teacher Lauren Pinka. “A special merci beaucoup from me to the two clubs and their members.”

2nd Annual Winter Wonderland Throughout the month of December, the Office of Legislator Sam Gonzalez had been hard at work collecting toys for children the holiday season. On December 19th, Legislator Gonzalez celebrated his 2nd Annual WinterWonderland Drive Thru Giveaway. Over 2,000 toys were donated to children as they arrived at the office in their cars. “I would like to thank everyone who donated to our holiday toy drive, as always our community goes above and beyond every time we ask them,”
said Legislator Gonzalez. “I love seeing all the smiling faces.” During the Drive thru, the attendees enjoyed the decorations, lights, and elves as they gave away gifts that other local groups and organizations donated for families. The BHS Latinos in Action group donated jackets, gloves and hats, coloring books and school supplies. In addition, Fidelis Health Care donated items such as hand sanitizers and facemasks to the families. “We love supporting Legislator Gonzalez in
his community activities, because we always see the children smiling and enjoying the festivities,” said John Franco, Community Relations Specialist Fidelis Care. Long Island’s largest year-round professional theatrical venue, The Argyle Theatre (Mark and Dylan Perlman, Executive Producers & Managing Partners; Evan Pappas, Artistic Director), presents the World Premiere of PUNK ROCK GIRL with book and arrangements by Tony-nominated Long Island Composer Joe Iconis (Broadway’s Be More Chill), arrangements and orchestrations by Rob Rokicki (Broadway’s The Lightning Thief), directed and choreographed by Jennifer Werner Worldwide Associate for Book Of Mormon), and in partnership with Lively McCabe Entertainment. It will begin performances on January 20, in advance of its January 22 opening night and will run through February 27, 2022. The Argyle Theatre (34 West Main Street, Babylon, Long Island).

Come on down and be the first to see this new exciting musical!” The cast includes Philippe Arroyo (Broadway: Aladdin), Kayla Catan, Seth Eliser, Jaylan Evans (Regional: The Scottsboro Boys), Kalonjee Gallimore, Ashley LaLonde (Lincoln Center’s The Black Clown), Lauren Marcus (Broadway: Be More Chill), Jackson Mattek, Jordan Leigh McCaskill, Kelly McIntyre (National Tour: A Night With Janis Joplin), Natalie Powers, Mikaela Rada, Brooke Shapiro (Regional: Hairspray), Brad Weatherford.
It’s a new musical featuring a score of popular songs written and made famous by female artists and female-fronted bands including Blondie, Pat Benatar, Avril Lavigne, Joan Jett, P!nk, Gwen Stefani, and more! 16-year-old Angela Quivers is a perfectionist who never takes chances and feels like there’s no place where she belongs … until she meets Proxi, a teenager who pulls her into a world of grungy guitars, shocking secrets, and big, loud, messy emotions. A musical about a young person finding a community and creating her tribe, PUNK ROCK GIRL is a noisy celebration of all things raw and ragged; trashy and heartfelt; familiar and alien.
The creative team includes Music Supervision by Geoffrey Ko, Musical Direction by Jennifer Peacock, Associate Direction and Choreography by Leonard Sullivan, Set Design by Nate Bertone, Costume Design by Jen Caprio, Lighting Design by John Salutz, Sound Design by Carlos Dias Jr and Prop Design by Steven Velasquez, Associate Scenic Designer is Joshua Warner, Associate Costume Designer is Anna Blazer and Heather Neil and Prop Assistant is Courtney Alberto. The Production Stage Manager is Alison Savino, with 1st Assistant Stage Manager Leah V. Pye, and 2nd Assistant Stage Manager /CSM Shannon Stewart. The Casting Director is Michael Cassara, CSA.
