In every version of the story The Gingerbread Man that they read, the Gingerbread Man was afraid of the river. The scholars decided to find out why. Fresh Air summers are filled with children running through the sprinklers in the grass, gazing at star-filled skies and swimming for the first time. This summer, join volunteer host families in Suffolk County, and open your heart and home to a Fresh Air child. Each summer, thousands of children from New York City’s low-income communities visit suburban, rural and small town communities along the East Coast and Southern Canada through The Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Towns Program. Madisen, age 11, has visited the MacKinnon family for the past two summers. Host mom Linda said, “Seeing the world through Madisen’s eyes and enthusiastic

Rise Above We all have our obstacles, the daily struggles we try to overcome in an effort to be our best selves, to live our best lives, to reach whatever pinnacle of fulfillment possible. They say you should never compare your journey with anyone else’s, or look to compete in such a category. To each, his or her own; live and let live, and every other cliché in the book. There are times when this is more difficult than others, of course. Moments when the inclination is to reach out, to try to repair, to take on responsibility for things which we bare none. Ultimately, it is up to each individual to chart a course, to find the way that leads to that which they are seeking. In that, no one else can intercede. This topic comes to me in looking back over the last year and noting that the greatest

realization was in accepting that certain people will never change, will never become what you wish them to be, will never react in the way you have determined to be most appropriate; these expectations are simply unrealistic, and an almost guaranteed recipe for disappointment. Along the same vein, the topic of my favorite weekly podcast happened to coincide in discussing the process of being able to manage anticipation in such a way as to not have your psyche completely crushed if they don’t happen to be met. It focused on envisioning your ideal situation, enjoying it in the context of something hopeful on the horizon - and then letting it go and accepting the current context for what it is, being in the moment and choosing a constructive way to deal with it.

Easier said than done, to be sure. But such is the essence of life. If there were no obstacles, where would the satisfaction be in overcoming them? How would we even know if we were moving forward, or simply existing in complacency, never striving for something better? I know, most readers would probably prefer that level of contentment; but reality is seldom this simple. And so, we press on - minute by minute, hour by hour, day by day, week by week, month by month, year by year… until someday, at some point in time, we look back to realize that we have, in fact, accomplished quite a bit by simply being able to rise above and persevere. As different as the individual journeys may be, I think it’s safe to say this is a common goal. Here’s to smoother paths ahead.

LIGHTHOUSE MISSION!

“Providing Hope Beyond The Food” … this is a phrase often used at Lighthouse Mission, a mobile food pantry on Long Island. This non-profit reaches 2,000 people per week with the mission to share the Gospel of Jesus and feed the poor. Pastor Jim Ryan is the President of this inspiring ministry, and the story of his journey to become so is so inspiring that it left me speechless.

After meeting with him and touring their quite busy facility, located at 1543 Montauk Highway in Bellport, I was extremely moved by all that I learned about and saw. Lighthouse Mission is a registered non-profit that operates 100% on donations, receiving no government help.

Lighthouse Mission also has a Youth Outreach that operates on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Every Tuesday, they open their facility to high school students and offer them food, entertainment and time to socialize in a Christian setting. Every Wednesday, they do the same for middle school students; and on the first and third Saturday of each month, they offer this for students K-5. All of these events are free of charge and open to everyone. If you are interested in becoming involved with this organization, there are plenty of ways to do so. They gladly accept clothing and food donations and currently are in need of winter coats. As far as volunteering, they accept walk-on volunteers at all of their Food Outreach events. If you are interested in coming with a group to a Food Outreach event or are interested in volunteering at a Youth Outreach Event, please call their office at 631.758.7584 first for more information.

Their Food Outreach operates weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays (visit their website at www.LighthouseMission.com for a full Food Outreach Schedule). Instead of operating this outreach from a single location, Lighthouse Mission chose to go mobile and travel to different locations where those in need could line up to receive plenty of nutritional food, gently used clothing and hear the word of God from one of the pastors working the event. Pastor Jim Ryan mentioned to me

that they were inspired to operate this outreach in a mobile matter because the Gospel tells us that, when going to help others, Jesus traveled to them instead of having them to come to Him.

CATCHING THE GINGERBREAD MAN - How would you catch a gingerbread man? Scholars in Mrs. Lentini’s kindergarten class at Fifth Avenue School have thought about that question. They recently wrote and illustrated their methods.

If you worked on-site at the lab for 250 workdays between 1947 and 1993 for Associated Universities, the AEC/DOE, or a subcontractor, or were a researcher living on-site at Brookhaven National Lab, and were later diagnosed with one of 23 specified types of cancer, I will help you, or direct survivors, get a six figure entitlement award. LEARNING ABOUT STANDARDS - Bay Shore teachers never stop learning. Recently, the teachers in the Cultural Arts Department took part in professional development to learn more about the new New York State Arts Standards.

WRESTLERS TAKE SECOND - Congratulations to the Bay Shore Varsity Wrestling team on its second place finish at the Cliff Clark Classic tournament! In addition, the team had 9 individual place finishers and 3 champions – Elijah Rivera, Nick Corsini and Alfredo Chapman.

PLANTING A LESSON - Scholars in Mrs. Olsen and Mrs. Carino’s class at South Country School had a first-hand look at plant science. They dissected plants in order to learn about the parts of a plant.

SNOWFLAKE SALE - Earlier this month, Superintendent Joseph Bond attended the Bay Shore Historical Society’s Snowflake Sale. He joined other community leaders, including Chamber of Commerce President Donna Periconi, in supporting the Historical Society at its annual event.

BAKING FOR THE HOLIDAYS - Scholars in Bay Shore Middle School’s Mentor and Mentee group held a holiday baking party. The group baked 10 dozen cookies to donate to a local nursing home.

FAMILIES EXPLORE MATH - Recently, Brook Avenue School families took part in Family Math Night. Families of first and second grade scholars learned more about math while playing a series of games.

EXPLORING OSMO - Scholars in Ms. Maher’s class at Fifth Avenue School recently explored OSMO. The scholars manipulated tangible game pieces such as number tiles, letter tiles and coding blocks using iPads to navigate the digital world of OSMO. The children couldn’t have more fun while engaging with technology and tapping into their creative minds!

SHARING A STORY - Bay Shore High School alumni Mike Taylor recently returned to the school to share his story. While speaking with the Sports Marketing scholars, Mike, who now works for Under Amour, shared the path he took after high school, the importance of networking and other advice.

HOUR OF CODE - Scholars at Bay Shore Middle School love exploring technology! They recently had the opportunity to take part in the Hour of Code. Using a variety of activities, the scholars learned about computer programming.

TURN AND TALK - Bay Shore Middle School scholars are great at working collaboratively! Recently, one class used “Turn and Talks” to help classmates select the best evidence to support the claims they were making.

PRACTICING DIPOMACY - Bay Shore High School scholars recently took part in ATHLETES HELPING ATHLETES - Members of the Bay Shore High School Athletes Model UN Day. While representing 29 countries, they took part in discussion about the Helping Athletes (AHA) mentoring program recently visited 7th and 8th grade scholars topic “The Protection and Safety of Journalists.” at Bay Shore Middle School. These varsity athletes with great character shared stories of athletic triumphs and failures. These peaks and valleys molded the AHA members into who they are today – confident, intelligent, inspiring leaders.

Conference Presentation

“Best of NY” session at the Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages in February. This is the second time the pair has been recognized for their presentations. They recently presented the “Best of NECTFL” at the

American Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages, an award they won for their presentation at the Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages last year.

MILITARY TRUCK VISITS - Fifth grade scholars at Gardiner Manor School learned about Veterans Day by seeing military trucks first-hand. A Gardiner Manor parent who is in the Army National Guard stationed at LaGuardia Airport brought some of her colleagues and three military trucks to the school. The scholars were able to sit inside the vehicles and learn about their operation.

FISHING FOR THE STORY - Scholars in Mrs. Brown’s third grade class at South Country School know how to spot story elements. They recently practiced using the story The Fisherman’s Wife.

SOUTH COUNTRY SCHOLARS - Scholars at South Country School recently had the opportunity to visit the Fire Island Lighthouse. While there, they climbed the stairs to the top of the lighthouse, and learned about the Life Saving Service and the lens of the light.

Families Explore Literacy

Recently, Fifth Avenue School parents attended a Title I Literacy Night workshop. While paraprofessionals met with scholars, parents engaged in strategies that would support their children at home. Mr.

Spatz, Ms. Mazzie, and Ms. Hinnant modeled cut up sentences, chunking words, and various other practices as parents participated by replicating the strategy. Families received goody bags of magnetic letters

and activities that the scholars will use at home. Thank you teachers, paraprofessionals, and parents for working together to help our scholars be the best they can be!

STUDENT CONFERENCE DAY - Scholars at Bay Shore Middle School recently took part in the annual Middle School Student Conference Day. During this event, grade-level assemblies were held on topics like bullying and overcoming obstacles. Scholars also attended workshops run by Bay Shore staff and students, as well as outside speakers, including motivational speaker Rohan Murphy.

Fourteen varieties of daffodils, with charming names like Sunny Girlfriend, Ice Follies and Precocious, were delivered to the KIC office after a flower donation request was made to support a beautification project at Islip Beach. “I was hoping for a few hundred bulbs,”

said KIC’s Executive Director Nancy Cochran. “You can imagine my surprise when a UPS truck rolled up and unloaded 35 crates of daffodil bulbs. I’m so grateful for Dutch Grown’s amazing generosity,” she added. KIC Commissioners Kathy and Bob VanDyke led a volunteer group, which planted about 3,000 of the bulbs at Islip Beach. The remainder were given to groups throughout Islip, including the West Islip Beautification Society, the Common Ground in

Each year, the Bay Shore High School Alumni Association encourages graduating scholars to say involved in the community and to help others when they can. Part of giving back has included generous donations to the Association’s scholarship fund. This year, due to the generosity displayed during the 50th Class Reunion, a Class of 1967 Award will be given to a member of the Class of 2018.
