The birthday party took place at The Bristol in Sayville, where 81 kids from the Sycamore Avenue Elementary School in Bohemia joined Supervisor Carpenter in singing Happy Birthday to Rose. Young Engineers Explore Aerospace History East Islip High School students in James Connell’s robotics and computer-aided drafting classes recently visited the Cradle of Aviation Museum in Garden City, which serves to honor the area’s aerospace heritage by preserving and displaying Long Island’s contribution to air and space travel. During the field trip, the students viewed an IMAX film on the solar system, took a half-hour class on the history of space travel and toured the museum’s exhibits. The museum docents – including retired engineers, pilots or former military members – provided the students with
a wealth of information about every exhibit as well as personal knowledge about the field of engineering. “Many of my robotics and CAD students are aspiring engineers and I wanted to provide them with an opportunity to celebrate the deep history of engineering and aerospace design that was done here on Long Island,” Connell said. “Visiting the Cradle of Aviation was a lot of fun, and it was quite informative,” said senior Sophia Bates. “As an aspiring engineer, getting to walk around and see the exhibits and airplanes was
an awesome experience.” “Over the summer, I visited Washington, DC and the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum,” said sophomore James Mendolia. “However, I feel that my experience at the Cradle of Aviation was far better and more informative because the docents where able to have a conversation with me and talk about the history of these planes on a deeper level. Most were pilots or engineers who flew or built the planes, so they had a more extensive knowledge, making this trip an even more amazing experience.”

STUDENTS WRITE MORE THAN 500 MAKE-A-WISH LETTERS - Islip’s Commack Road and Wing elementary schools again participated in the Macy’s MakeA-Wish letter writing campaign. For each letter written, Macy’s will donate a dollar to the Make-a-Wish Foundation to help grant wishes for critically ill children. Spread Cheer, Not Germs ARA - Stopping by the nursing home or hospital to spend time with loved ones is a ritual for thousands of Americans -- but are you sharing more than smiles and hugs when you visit? “Your hands are the main transmitters of health care-acquired infections,” says Alecia
Cooper, a registered nurse and senior vice president of clinical services for Medline Industries, Inc. “This shouldn’t come as a surprise, since your hands are constantly in contact with your surroundings -opening doors or dialing the phone, for example.” Two simple things can go a long way toward
ensuring that you’re not sharing bacteria along with your special treats -keeping your hands clean and making sure you are cleaning them correctly. Just as important is making sure you are covering the areas of your hands that are likely to have the greatest density of germs. According to
a study published in the Journal of Clinical Microbiology, these include the area under your fingernails, your palms, the backs of your hands and the “webbing” in between your fingers. “Put a squirt of gel or soap in the palm of one hand and dip the fingertips of the opposite
hand into the pools before spreading over other areas, then repeat with the other hand and fingertips,” says Cooper. “It only takes a few seconds and you will be getting at where the majority of germs are.” Proper hand hygiene is one of the cornerstones in preventing the spread
