The Islip Middle School C.A.R.E. Club recently concluded its Thanksgiving food drive. An abundance of stuffing mixes, canned food items, mashed potatoes, coffee, juices and “all the trimmings” for a holiday meal were received
from district community donations. Once the food was boxed up, members of the custodial, buildings and grounds staff delivered the food to a local food pantry to bring comfort to families this holiday season.
The C.A.R.E. Club, which stands for compassion, attitude, responsibility and empathy, wishes to thank student families, staff members and administration for their heartfelt support.

Sarah Grace Foundation Marks A Successful Year, Looks Ahead To 2022
The Sarah Grace Foundation for Children With Cancer, Inc. is ending the year strong and has exciting plans for new and returning events when the calendar turns to 2022. The Hicksville-based organization continues to fulfill its mission of supporting children and their families during cancer treatment. The Foundation is named in honor of Sarah Grace Weippert, who lost her courageous battle with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia in November 2002 at 12 years old. Sarah enjoyed crafts, music and ballgames, and many of the Foundation’s initiatives aim to ignite that same spark in other children. Most recently, the Foundation held its annual Holiday Extravaganza raffle, which raised more than $4,000. The funds provided financial aid for holiday meals and gifts to struggling families. Ongoing toy drives have enabled the Foundation to send gifts to children at its core hospitals including Cohen Children’s Medical Center, Montefiore Medical Center and New York-Presbyterian Hospital. To mark Childhood Cancer Month in September, anyone who made a $10 donation to the Foundation received a gold ribbon pin or a gold ribbon magnet, or a $20 donation for both. The gold ribbon is the official symbol of children with cancer worldwide. This year, Sarah would have turned 31, so in the spring the Foundation hosted its first virtual 5K race – the equivalent of 3.1 miles. The race drew more than 70 participants from across the country and generated approximately $4,800 to help support the Foundation’s initiatives. The event was so successful in its inaugural year that the Foundation is considering hosting two race events next year; An inperson 5K race in addition to another virtual race later in
FRIENDS OF SARAH-5K - The Sarah Grace Foundation hosted its first virtual 5K race this past spring drawing participants from across the country, the year. The Foundation is also considering the return of the popular Night of Laughter fundraiser dinner if these events can be held safely. New for 2022 will be a clothing drive fundraiser in January. Old clothes can be dropped off at a designated site, and the Foundation would be paid per pound of clothing. Another BakeLESS-Cake Sale is in the works for next summer. The Foundation is also planning restaurant fundraisers, in which Sarah Grace would be the featured charity on certain dates at local restaurants. Supporters would be notified of those dates to dine out at these restaurants and the Foundation would receive a percentage of the sales that night. Three-ply, washable face masks with the Sarah Grace Foundation logo continue to be sold on the website, www. thesarahgracefoundation. org. The masks are adjustable and available in adult and child sizes. The cost is $13 for an adult mask and $12 for a children’s’ mask. “The supporters of the Sarah Grace Foundation allow us to continue our mission in aiding children and their families during such a difficult time,” said Foundation President
Matthew Weippert, Sarah’s father. “We are touched by the generosity of so many people, from Sarah’s hometown to friends across the country. Thanks to our team of dedicated volunteers, the Sarah Grace Foundation is overcoming the obstacles of the pandemic and still providing for our children” The Foundation continues to think outside the box, working closely with pediatric cancer social workers to provide optimum assistance to these families. Throughout the pandemic, the Foundation has not had to turn down any referrals and has continued to sponsor core programs including The Escape Hatch, Gabe’s Chemo Duck, The Bead Program and Sarah Grace’s Book Angels as well as financial aid for meals, transportation, funerals, holiday gifts and so much more. East Islip High School’s varsity softball team participated in the annual Christmas Magic service project on Dec. 12. All of the returning players, including assistant coach Katie Wallace, shopped at Target in Bay Shore for elementary-age children in the Amityville School District. Each player had $75 and a Dear Santa list. The
gifts were then wrapped by the players, and will be delivered by East Islip coach Jason McGowan, who teaches at Amityville High School. “This is my fifth year participating in Christmas Magic with the softball team,” captain Kyra Kreuscher said. “It is such a great experience to shop for children who do not have much. Each player
gets paired with a child and their wish list. While I’m shopping, I think about how happy these children will be when they wake up Christmas morning and open these presents.” “It shows me how fortunate I am,” Madison Sturtz said. “The experience that comes with giving back to these kids is so rewarding, especially around this time of year.”

CANDY COLLECTION FOR A CAUSE - While Islip community children counted and sorted their Halloween candy, Brianne Moon, a fourth grade student at Commack Road Elementary School, had a different goal for the candy she collected. From Nov. 1-10, Brianne accepted community donations totaling 232 pounds of holiday treats, which she then donated to the Ronald McDonald House. Brianne has been collecting candy for the Ronald McDonald House for the past three years. Since she cannot eat most sweets due to her allergies to peanuts, sesame and dairy, Brianne decided to ensure children dealing with major medical issues had a chance to savor holiday candy. East Islip High School senior Derek Burrell has been named as the 62nd recipient of Newsday’s Hansen Award, recognizing him as the outstanding high school football player in Suffolk County for 2021. He was presented with this prestigious award – the first ever for an East Islip player –at the Suffolk County Football Coaches Association banquet, held
on Dec. 6 at the Hyatt Regency in Hauppauge. After being moved to the quarterback position in August by East Islip coach Sal Ciampi, Burrell began a spectacular season to remember, finishing with 33 total touchdowns and 2,952 all-purpose yards. On defense, Burrell was equally strong, tallying 45 tackles and returning two of his four interceptions
for touchdowns. In the playoffs, he led his team to East Islip’s first county championship title since 2016. The Hansen Award is presented annually in memory of Westhampton coach Carl A. Hansen, organizer of the NassauSuffolk Advisory Board and president of the New York State Public High School Athletic Association.

Six seniors from East Islip High School – Ryan Bauco, Stephen DeAmicis, Gavin Herzog, Cole Juengerkes, Jack Kern and Nicholas Perone – signed national letters of intent on Dec. 8 to continue their lacrosse careers in college next fall. Bauco will attend Stevenson University, majoring in business finance. A four-year varsity starter on attack, he earned Scholar-Athlete designation all four years. In the 2021 season, Bauco led the team in goals and received the Coaches Award. A three-sport varsity athlete, Bauco is a member of East Islip’s basketball and football teams, winning the Suffolk County championship this year as a member of
the latter, and also played travel lacrosse for East Coast Elite. In academics, Bauco was named an AP Scholar, earned high honor roll designation and is a member of the Foreign Language Honor Society. DeAmicis will attend Adelphi University, majoring in physical education and health. The defenseman earned honor roll designation every quarter. Herzog will also attend Adelphi, majoring in business finance. The midfielder earned AllCounty honors in his junior year. Juengerkes will attend Felician University, majoring in business law. The defenseman, a member of East Islip lacrosse for over seven years, also played for the Long Island
Rush Lacrosse club team. Kern will attend Pace University, majoring in business finance. The goalie, a four-year varsity player, was named Suffolk County Class B Division 2 Most Valuable Player and awarded Player of the Game in a playoff win. He boasts a 71% save percentage and made 166 saves in his junior year. In academics, he earned honor roll designation. Perone will attend Pace University, joining the school’s physician’s assistant program. The defenseman earned AllDivision honors in his junior year. In academics, Perone was named an AP Scholar and earned honor roll distinction every quarter.
