East Islip recognized the winners of this year’s Red Ribbon contest during a December Board of Education meeting. Abigail Lennon from John F. Kennedy Elementary won for her anti-drug slogan and poster, “Fly Away from Drugs,” while Alexandra
Totillo from Ruth C. Kinney Elementary was honored for hers, “If You Do Tobacco, You Are a Big Whacko.” East Islip High School sophomore and SADD Club member Olivia Bishop and teacher and SADD adviser Bridget Lopiccolo

It was the best of times; it was the worst of times. So was the year 2016, at times. And so we bid farewell, and look ahead to 2017 with the same mix of enthusiasm and anxiety, optimism and apprehension. All years are a product of their individual months, weeks, days, hours even. Highs and lows become woven into the fabric of our being and, somehow, intertwine into yet another chapter of life. As much as the collective opinion seems to hold that this past year was one of the
worst on record, for many reasons, I’m sure it held just as much hope and promise for others. It’s all a matter of perspective. Ultimately, each moment needs to be taken on its own, able to stand up by itself and not be compared and contrasted to the big picture. Too much focus on the future, and on things beyond our control, leads to missing those opportunities right in front of us. This is not to say that we should forgo any life plans we may have; but there is a balance. As we analyze and overthink, life marches on around us.
And so the goal, this year, should be to live, to experience, to embrace those moments swirling around us. And to savor them. Good, bad or indifferent, everything happens for a reason. We may not understand the dynamics of why, or what it may lead to down the road; but eventually, the path becomes clearer. The important thing is not to stray too far off the road in the meantime. The idealism in all of us suggests that the best is yet to come. Here’s hoping that 2017 is exactly that for everyone.

Magical Musicians East Islip High School seniors Kevin Jacobsen and Michael Stevens were named All-National musicians, and were chosen to participate in the National Association for Music Education’s All-National Symphony Orchestra concert, held on November 13th in Dallas, Texas. Both exceptional students spent four days rehearsing from morning to night in preparation for their concert, and attended workshops to help enhance their musical ambitions and knowledge. They prepared challenging music under the baton of Dr. William LaRue Jones, a world-renowned conductor. The NAfME All-National Honors Ensembles include a concert band, symphony orchestra, mixed chorus and jazz ensemble. Jacobsen and Stevens qualified for their state-level honor ensemble program and competed against top students for a spot in these national ensembles. They were two of just 13 students from New York State selected for All-National Symphony Orchestra. Statewide, Jacobsen was one of only two trumpet players accepted, while Stevens was one of only two French horn players. “The East Islip music department is extremely proud of Kevin and Michael for representing the district on the national level,” said Dr. Robert J. Wottawa II, the district’s director of art, ENL, music and world languages. Both East Islip student-musicians previously attended All-State in their junior year, played this year with the New York State Council of Administrators of Music
Education’s All-County Symphony Orchestra, and are members of East Islip’s Tri-M Music Honor Society. Both travel into New York City every Sunday to participate in the New York Youth Symphony. They were recognized by the district’s Board of Education at a recent meeting. Jacobsen has racked up many accomplishments as a
trumpet player, having immersed himself in music. He began playing trumpet in the third grade, and by the fourth grade, had participated in the New York State School Music Association. He has since been chosen for Suffolk County Music Educators Association recognition each year. Jacobsen is very active in East Islip’s music program, playing in the school’s honors wind ensemble, honors symphony, honors choir and jazz ensemble, as well as in the pit orchestra for school musicals. This past summer, he was selected to attend the prestigious

Softball Star Signs On was also a member of the LI Express 18U Gold travel softball team. “We are very proud of Maddie’s achievement in continuing her athletic career in college,” said Athletic Director Bob Panariello. “It is a testament to her high level of dedication.”

He has played with the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra for three years and the Nassau/Suffolk Band for the past three years. “All-National was a life-changing experience, because it was amazing to hear other students from different states who all have the same passion for music I have,” said Jacobsen. Stevens, who plays piano as well as French horn, began playing piano in kindergarten and horn in first grade. He has been participating in NYSSMA since kindergarten, including 24 NYSSMA festivals. He is likewise active in the school’s music program, participating in East Islip’s school’s honors wind ensemble, honors symphony, honors choir, jazz ensemble and pit orchestra. For the past two summers, Stevens has traveled through China and Europe with the National Youth Orchestra of the United States of America. He also attended the Boston University Tanglewood Institute as well as other summer music programs, played with the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra for seven years, and attends the Juilliard Pre-College Saturday program. “There is something magical about having musicians from around the country and variety of backgrounds unify to create music together,” said Stevens. “Despite the diverse cultures, what the orchestra was able to produce was quite amazing.”
Decking the Tree East Islip High School’s Interact Club participated in the Islip Arts Council’s third annual “Deck the Halls” project held on December 1st at Brookwood Hall. Four holiday trees were purchased in the Interact Club’s name by local
East Islip businesses and the Rotary Club, with all proceeds benefiting the Islip Arts Council. Students enjoyed decorating their trees alongside more than 50 other local community groups. “We were proud to be part of this outdoor tree
decorating event because it gave students the opportunity to participate in a fun, meaningful service project that has become a great tradition in the East Islip community,” said Lisa Rapiejko, the Interact Club’s adviser.

Islip High School senior softball star Maddie Feddersen recently signed a National Letter of Intent to pitch next fall for Bloomfield College in Bloomfield, New Jersey, where she will join the Bears’ Division II program. In this past spring’s playoffs, Feddersen retired the final 10 batters she
faced, securing a victory over Hampton Bays. In the team’s first Suffolk Class A semifinals, she threw a complete game and went 4-for-4 with a home run and five RBIs to lead Islip over Sayville. Yellow Dot Kits Available Sheriff Vincent F. DeMarco wants to remind residents that Yellow Dot medical information kits for vehicles and homes are available through his Office and may be obtained by calling the Sheriff’s Office’s Community Relations Unit at 631.852.3763. The kits are made available through the NYS Sheriff’s Association, in collaboration with local Sheriff’s Offices, and are distributed to the public free of charge. The Yellow Dot kit contains
a medical information card and a Yellow Dot program decal. Participants complete the card, attach a recent photo, place it in the glove compartment of their vehicle, and place the Yellow Dot decal on the rear driver’s side window. First responders arriving at the scene of an emergency will be alerted by the Yellow Dot decal to look for the medical information card in the glove compartment. It may also be used in a participant’s residence to
alert first responders when they enter someone’s home. The Sheriff’s Office has distributed than 10,000 Yellow Dot to County residents since the programs’ inception in 2013. Piano Competition Launched A pair of Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) piano students, Luke Gentil (Half Hollow Hills CSD) and Jeremy Kaplan (BellmoreMerrick CHSD), were featured performers at the Grace Music School’s official kickoff event for their Islandwide piano competition. The winner of the competition will earn $1,000 and will perform at Carnegie Hall. At the event, Mr. Gentil performed two of his original compositions, “Billade No. 2” and “Gentil Invention No.
1.” Mr. Kaplan performed a medley of Billy Joel songs, beginning with “Waltz No. 2” from Fantasies & Delusions. He also performed the jazz standard “Blue Rondo a la Turk” by Dave Brubeck. “What more fitting way to celebrate Long Island’s aspiring pianists then having a piano competition,” said Grace Heaphy, director of the Grace Music School. “It gives them a chance to perform at one of the greatest music venues in the world.” The competition will be held in April of 2017 at
the world-famous Steinway and Sons piano showroom in New York City. The winner will perform at Carnegie Hall in June. “We could not be more proud of these two flourishing musicians,” said LIHSA Principal Jack Lenson. “They are an excellent representation of the gifted youngsters that constitute our school. They are the embodiment of Long Island’s up-and-coming artistic talent.”

Art from the Heart Art is a powerful medium of expression. Particularly for the aging, it can present an opportunity to open up to outsiders what may be a lifetime of inspirational images never before shared. Thirteen artists who happen to be residents of New York State skilled nursing and assisted living facilities translated visions from their hearts and minds into winning entries of a juried art contest, now featured in a 2017 calendar,
“Art from the Heart.” The annual calendar is the result of an art contest launched in 2004 by the Foundation for Quality Care, Inc., the New York State Health Facilities Association (NYSHFA) and the New York State Center for Assisted Living (NYSCAL). Residents of more than 335 NYSHFA/ NYSCAL member skilled nursing and assisted living facilities around the state were invited to submit
artwork. Proceeds from the calendar will help improve the quality of life for long term care residents at facilities across New York. Each NYSHFA/NYSCAL member was encouraged to hold their own art contest and was invited to submit up to two pieces of original artwork by their residents. The response was overwhelming, with more than 85 pieces submitted from across
New York state. The judges included representatives from the New York State Museum and the Sorelle Gallery in Albany. Ranging in age from 57 to 97, the different backgrounds of the artists who submitted work creates a unique blend of artistic styles. Some are professional artists who have been drawing and painting their entire lives, while others discovered their talents after moving
