In fact, one of the prized possessions in her kitchen is a cookbook filled with past presidents’ favorite family recipes. Ika particularly loves whipping up Chewy Macaroons for her family during holidays and special occasions. She shares that this macaroon recipe was a family favorite of President Lyndon B. Johnson, and the Johnson family, during their time in the White House.
What You Will Need:
2 liquid egg whites 1 pinch of salt 1 half cup of sugar 1 cup sweetened, shredded coconut 1 half teaspoon of vanilla extract
Preparation:
Pre-heat oven to 325 degrees Beat egg whites with salt until stiff Gradually beat in sugar until stiff (shiny peaks will form) Slowly fold in coconut and vanilla

New Year, New Me Mindset.
It’s officially 2019! If you’re reading this right now, think about all you have to be grateful for: eyes to see, education to read, knowledge to interpret, the gift of free time to do what you please (which happens to be reading this article, thank you!) and the blessing of seeing another year begin.
giving your recyclables to a homeless individual so they can get the money for them instead of you getting the money for yourself or simply cooking a meal for a needy friend every so often. Think of how much more we can do for those around us and even those around the world!
It’s not uncommon this time of year to hear people speak of New Year’s Resolutions and what way they want to “better themselves” in the New Year. Society has almost groomed us to believe we need to partake in coming up with a way to improve ourselves with the start of each New Year.
One thing I have felt called to do in my life is to help those in need in Africa. I don’t know why specifically there, but it’s been a calling I have had for most of my life. I’ve sponsored a child in Kenya, got involved with another organization that helps people in need in Africa, and since I specifically feel called to help those in Africa suffering from a lack of clean water, I recently decided to start a fundraiser through an organization to raise money to bless people in need in subSaharan Africa with fresh water.
My question is: why do we feel the need to start each New Year thinking about ourselves? Don’t we do enough of that already? Just think, on an average day we pick out an outfit for ourselves in the morning, eat meals throughout the day that we enjoy, partake in habits we created, work a job that we applied for and connect with friends that we chose. The last thing we need to do is to start each New Year by thinking of more ways to make life about us. I hope we can all see the beauty in helping others. It just so happens that when we lose ourselves in serving others, we actually find ourselves in the midst of it. The more we give, the more we receive! I believe the biggest misunderstanding that anyone can have is to believe their life is theirs to do whatever they please with. Living with that type of mindset can lead you into an egotistical lifestyle and it easily distracts you from what your calling really is, because we all are here for a purpose.

I do believe we should be mindful of our habits, our lifestyles and ourselves, always bettering ourselves to make the world a better place. However, I believe we should get in a habit of thinking more of others and less of ourselves.

This New Year, instead of thinking of how much weight you want to lose, how many countries you want to travel to, what job promotion you want to achieve or what you want others to think of you, try changing your mindset to think of how you can help others. Maybe your New Year’s Resolution can be to volunteer once a week at a local non-profit, donate all your unwanted clothes instead of throwing them in the garbage,

After plenty of research, the organization I started my fundraiser through is The Water Project. The Water Project is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that unlocks human potential by providing reliable water projects to communities in sub-Saharan Africa, which suffer from a lack of access to clean water and proper sanitation. My fundraising goal is $12,000, which if reached will fully fund a water project in a needy community in sub-Saharan Africa, allowing them to receive a fresh water well and learn proper sanitation skills. If I do not reach my fundraising goal, the organization will take all that I raised and put it towards helping as many people as possible in subSaharan Africa receive fresh water. I simply cannot imagine lacking access to clean water and it breaks my heart knowing that is a reality for some people. A Little Bit Goes A Long Way There is a Tony Robbins phrase that stays with me, which goes as follows: “People tend to overestimate what they can accomplish in a year, and they tend to underestimate what can be accomplished in a decade.” I love that phrase and think of it often. To bring it out to a wider perspective, I interpret it to mean that human nature tends to box us in to thinking that when it comes to meeting a goal or aspiration, we must take an “all or nothing” approach. It simply isn’t true. Another old saying, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,” is one of the most brilliant lines ever spoken (it originated from an old Chinese proverb, which was translated into English). I was just speaking with a coworker about the holidays. As we were discussing the copious amounts of food many of us tend to consume during the holiday season and how gym memberships are often initiated in January and not followed through with, I jokingly told her about my “Lazy Girl Workout.”
I explained that during the winter months when it is not as easy to take my long hikes outdoors or to play outdoor sports, I do tend to be more sedentary. I also have a larger appetite in the winter. However, I never pass up a moment to squeeze in some form of physical activity, even when I am doing something like watching a movie or catching up on Netflix. I call it my “Lazy Girl Workout.” Sounds funny, right? Most days, as I am laying on the floor or in bed doing my “Netflix and Chill” thing, I take the opportunity to do my leg lifts in repetition for about half an hour. It gives my legs a nice, low impact workout. I will also do my abdominal isometrics and some arm circles while I’m at it. No, it’s not quite as robust as 45 minutes on a treadmill or an hour of lifting weights, but if you compare doing nothing to doing something, I am ahead of the game. Human beings will often set up losing propositions for themselves by saying, “Well, if I can’t do the very best thing, then
why bother at all?” They fail to see the immense value in a whole lot of consistent small steps. Last year, I was having a moment when I was feeling very overwhelmed. There were a lot of challenges going on in my life in a rather short period of time. My father said to me, “By the yard, life is hard. Inch by inch, life’s a cinch.” As simple as it sounds, that phrase absolutely changed my perspective. If you can only manage your life and your goals inch by inch right now, then do that. If you can manage your life by the yard, then do that. Either way, do something. To go back to my original conversation with my coworker, before long, I had her brainstorming the small exercises she could do while in her office (push-ups against the file cabinet) or in her car (hello glute and ab isometrics!). Whatever your goal, be it fitness, career, family and so forth; do consistent small things each day, each week, each month, each year. One day you will look behind you and be amazed at how far you’ve come.

Field Hockey Accolades East Islip High School’s division champion field hockey squad earned numerous deserved accolades at the Suffolk County Field Hockey Coaches Association’s annual awards dinner. The December 4th ceremony was held at Villa Lombardi’s
in Holbrook. Seniors Lindsay Guzzetta and Kendall Mittleman earned All-County status; seniors MaryKate Carroll and Sarah DiPrima and juniors Allison Chiarelli and Alyssa Levy earned All-County Honorable Mention; Carroll and
Guzzetta both won AllTournament recognition; and Melissa Sconone took home the Unsung Hero award. “This is a great team, better every day on and off the field,” said coach Christopher Veit.
Donated Tree at Brookwood Hall Each December, East Islip High School’s Interact Club participates in the Islip Arts Council’s Festival of Trees event at Brookwood Hall, in which holiday trees are purchased by community groups and local businesses to benefit the Council.
During the December 6th event, alongside more than 50 other local community groups, Interact students decorated their tree, purchased by the Rotary Club, with a community service theme. “This is a wonderful event that gives students
the opportunity to participate in a fun and meaningful service project that has become a great tradition in the East Islip community,” said Interact Club adviser Lisa Rapiejko.

Northport-East Northport School District’s law and civic education program, featured guest speakers Cathy Kuhlmeir Frey and Mary Beth Tinker, both hailed as “icons of freedom.” Kuhlmeier Frey was the lead litigant in “Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier,” the Supreme Court’s landmark
decision on student free press rights in a school setting, while Tinker was a lead litigant in another landmark Supreme Court case, “Tinker v. Des Moines,” which set the authoritative precedent on the free speech rights of students under the 1st Amendment.

The awards are presented each year by the Suffolk Zone Chapter of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance to the top male and female physical education students in each Suffolk County high school’s graduating class. physical education and health classes as well as an overall grade point average of 3.0, must be a physical education role model, and must demonstrate outstanding character and leadership both in class activities and schoolwide. SALVATION ARMY ANGELS - An outpouring of generosity from Town of Islip employees was evident this week, when hundreds of toys purchased for the Salvation Army Angel Tree Program awaited pick-up in Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter’s office. Representatives from the Salvation Army collected the gifts for distribution to children–’Angels’–who would otherwise this year, be without a Christmas. In total, 75 ‘Angels’ were adopted, between Town Hall and MacArthur Airport employees. Children’s wish lists consisting of toys, trains, trucks and trikes were filled, so that every child on the list will wake up to a visit from Santa Claus!

Antibiotics Aren’t Always The Answer CDC Urges Public To Be Antibiotics Aware
(NAPSI)—The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) encourages patients and families to Be Antibiotics Aware by learning about safe antibiotic use. Each year in the United States, at least 2 million people get infected with antibiotic-resistant bacteria. At least 23,000 die as a result. Antibiotic resistance, one of the most urgent threats to the public’s health, occurs when bacteria develop the ability to defeat the drugs designed to kill them.
What Do Antibiotics Treat? Antibiotics are critical tools for treating a number of common infections, such as pneumonia, and for lifethreatening conditions including sepsis. Antibiotics are only needed for treating certain infections caused by bacteria. What Don’t Antibiotics Treat? Antibiotics do not work on viruses, such as colds and flu, or runny noses, even if the mucus is thick, yellow or green. Antibiotics also won’t
help some common bacterial infections including most cases of bronchitis, many sinus infections, and some ear infections. What Are The Side Effects of Antibiotics? ny time antibiotics are used, they can cause side effects and lead to antibiotic resistance. When antibiotics aren’t needed, they won’t help you, and the side effects could still hurt you. Common side effects range from things like rashes and yeast infections to severe health problems.
More serious side effects include Clostridium difficile infection (also called C. difficile or C. diff), which causes diarrhea that can lead to severe colon damage and death. If you need antibiotics, take them exactly as prescribed. Patients and families can talk to their healthcare professional if they have any questions about their antibiotics, or if they develop side effects, especially diarrhea, since that could be C. difficile, which needs to be treated.
Can I Feel Better Without Antibiotics? Patients and families can ask their healthcare professional about the best way to feel better while their body fights off the virus. Respiratory viruses usually go away in a week or two without treatment. How Can I Stay Healthy? We can all stay healthy and keep others healthy by cleaning our hands, covering our coughs, staying home when sick, and getting recommended
vaccines, for the flu, for example. Antibiotics save lives. When a patient needs antibiotics, the benefits outweigh the risks of side effects and antibiotic resistance. Improving the way we take antibiotics helps keep us healthy now, helps fight antibiotic resistance, and ensures that life-saving antibiotics will be available for future generations. Islip Town Receiver of Taxes, Alexis Weik, has announced that her office, located at 40 Nassau Avenue, Islip, is accepting payment of 2018/2019 taxes. The office is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with the following exceptions: On December 31st the office will be open from 8:30 a.m. to 12 noon and we will be closed on
December 24th, December 25th and January 1st. “One evening in January has been set aside for those residents who are unable to pay in person during our regular 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. business hours”, said Mrs. Weik. “On Thursday, January 10th, the office will remain open until 7:00 p.m.” Of course, residents can save time by visiting the Town of Islip website (www.
islipny.gov) and pay their taxes online or by mailing their tax payments. However, to avoid penalty, all payments must be postmarked BY THE POST OFFICE no later than January 10, 2019.
