As the culmination of Islip High School’s World Language Honor Society annual monthlong toy and clothing drive to benefit community children in need, the Suffolk County Department of Social Services visited the school on Dec. 18. Club

The Town of Islip is currently accepting nominations for the 2020 celebration of Black History. The Town of Islip will celebrate Black History in February by honoring individuals who have made significant contributions to the Islip community, and live or work in the Town of Islip. The celebration will take place at the February Town Board Meeting. To nominate a community member, you must submit a nomination form before the deadline listed below. The forms and category list can be downloaded from our website by visiting www. islipny.gov. East Islip High School students enjoyed holiday traditions at local landmark Brookwood Hall during the first week of December, connecting to the community and setting an ideal seasonal mood. The high school’s Interact Club participated in the Brookwood Hall Restoration Committee and Islip Arts Council’s sixth annual Festival of Trees on Dec. 4. Holiday trees were purchased by the Rotary Club and

Albrecht, Bruno & O’Shea Funeral Home for students to decorate alongside more than 50 other local community groups and service organizations. Proceeds will benefit the Islip Arts Council, which has its headquarters at the mansion. “This event gives students the opportunity to participate in a fun and meaningful service project that is a tradition in the East Islip community,” said club adviser Lisa Rapiejko.

On Dec. 7, the school’s chamber orchestra performed carols at Brookwood’s annual Christmas tree lighting ceremony, for the fourth consecutive year. During the event, community members are invited to tour the mansion, observe art and hear holiday sounds. “We always look forward to the opportunity to bring music to the community,” said Orchestra Director Giovanna Ruggiero.

Throughout our local communities many people have heard of the YMCA of Long Island but don’t realize all that they do. From education to exercise, volunteerism to volleyball, preventative health to preschool, the Y doesn’t just strengthen bodies, but it also strengthens communities through programs. The YMCA of Long Island is truly a leading nonprofit organization that works daily to improve lives through programs and services that nurture youth, foster healthy living and inspire social responsibility. Simply put, their mission is to improve the quality of life of children, adults and families through programs that develop body, mind and spirit. They welcome people of all ages, from all walks of life and from all backgrounds to join them in making communities stronger and making Long Island a better place to live, work and play! In 2019, the organization celebrated 100 Years of Transforming Lives and is excited to continue to do so in 2020 and beyond. The Y of Long Island has many different branches: East Hampton, Patchogue, Holtsville, Huntington, Bay Shore and Glen Cove. They also run the Boulton Center for the Performing Arts in Bay Shore and the YMCA Family

Services (a counseling center) in Holtsville. This January they kicked off their Annual Support Campaign, which provides scholarships to children, teens, adults, seniors and families in need. These scholarships provide access to the YMCA for membership, programs and services such as swim lessons, pre-school in 11 school districts across the island, before and after school, summer day camp, health and wellness programs and chronic disease prevention and recovery programs such as LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA for cancer survivors, Moving for Better Balance, a fall prevention program, EnhanceFitness for people with arthritis and more. The YMCA of Long Island offers so much and can make a large difference in your life or the life of others. Registration for their winter programs begins on January 19th. Maybe 2020 is the year for you or someone you know to jump in and get involved in a great organization like the Y? Berland (D-Dix Hills) honored the Brentwood Boys Varsity Soccer Team for winning the 2019 New York State AA Boys Soccer Championship with an undefeated 22-0 record. The Brentwood Boys Varsity Soccer Team started No. 30 in the preseason and ended ranked the top Boys Public School Team in the nation by SIMA FAB 50, USA Today, and by United Soccer Coaches Polls. The team’s season included victories over Top 25-ranked Commack and state tournament wins over Massapequa and Ossining, culminating in a 4-0 defeat of Fairport in the New York

State final. Head Coach, Ron Eden and Assistant Coaches Victor Farfan, Joel Iglesias, and Rich Castello were also recognized for not only leading the team to victory, but also instilling the value of teamwork and sportsmanship. Coach Eden has been with the Brentwood Boys Soccer Team for 40 years; serving as Assistant Coach for 16 seasons, and Head Coach for the last 24 seasons. During Coach Eden’s time at the helm, Brentwood has made 10 state tournament appearances with four titles. “I am proud to congratulate our Brentwood athletes and their coaches for all of their hard work and a job well done, said Legislator Gonzalez. I am confi-

Bagel Breakfast Raises $830 For UNICEF East Islip Middle School’s Leaders Club recently held its annual UNICEF Homeroom Bagel Breakfast fundraising contest, raising $830. The winning class was awarded a bagel breakfast prize. UNICEF works in over 190 countries and territories to save children’s lives, to defend their rights, and to help them fulfill their potential

from early childhood through adolescence. At the friendly competition’s beginning, UNICEF boxes were distributed to students, who were encouraged to bring in spare change. Throughout the two weeks of the contest, students brought back their full boxes and club members weighed, recorded and tallied each homeroom’s
