Men and women from across Long Island will be getting all of their red outfits and accessories ready for the American Heart Association’s 13th Annual Long Island Go Red For Women Luncheon. Heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 4 killers of Long Island women. For more than 10 years, women have been fighting heart disease individually and together as part of the Go Red For Women movement. More than 650,000 women’s lives have been saved, but the fight is far from over. While 1-in-30 American women die of breast cancer,

almost 1-in-3 will die from cardiovascular disease. Searching For That Fresh Start By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As much as I – and millions of others – look to the New Year as a fresh start of sorts, the question certainly arises: is such a thing even possible? In the age of racing from one day to the next, is there time to pause and press the reset button? I always go back to the wise words of a dear friend, who said “you can start your day over any time you wish.” Well, if that’s true, then it would follow the same would go for a week, a month, a year… any point in time when such a clean slate is deemed necessary. In theory, anyway.

Does it work? Can all slights, real and imagined, be forgiven and forgotten? Personally, I believe that they can. Forgiven, anyway. Sure, the mind tends to dwell, and perhaps certain things are not meant to be wiped away completely, as they serve as building blocks, part of the learning curve of life. Day to day, things happen; some we have control over, others we do not. But at the end of those days, we must step back and prioritize what is truly important. And, despite all the outside forces, it always seems to come right back down to the basics – family, friends, loved

ones, those whom we cannot imagine our lives without. And the memories… those individual moments that together create a collective sense of happiness and comfort, those memories we simply cannot live without and would do anything to preserve. This New Year, my hope is the same as it has always been – for good health, happiness and days full of limitless possibilities. And memories. More precious moments to savor in the coming days and weeks and months and years – because those are the things you simply can’t press the reset button on.

A complete line-up for 2014 air show will be provided in the coming months. “After the United States Air Force Thunderbirds were forced to cancel air show performances last year due to government sequester budget cuts, we couldn’t be more thrilled the Blue Angels have committed to perform at this year’s show. Major League Baseball pitcher Joseph M. Nathan, a Stony Brook University alumnus and former Seawolves baseball star, received an honorary degree during the first of two Winter Commencement ceremonies today. “Dr. Nathan,” who recently signed a two-year contract with the Detroit Tigers, and graduated from Stony Brook in 1997 with a degree in Business Management, was presented with an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree for “serving as an exemplary

role model” and for his “unwavering commitment to Stony Brook University and the Department of Athletics.” During the ceremony, Nathan was praised for his work ethic, his passion, and his success on and off the field. “I am blown away,” said the 341-save, six-time Major League All Star pitcher after his degree was made official by SUNY Trustee Cary Staller. “I have been taken aback and humbled by the whole experience.” Nathan went on to say

that he was not widely recruited to play baseball; that Stony Brook was “the absolute perfect fit,” and that “coming to Stony Brook was one of the best decisions I ever made in my life.” In total, 2,244 degrees were conferred at the two separate ceremonies: 1,090 Bachelors; 208 Doctorals; 818 Masters and 128 Certificates. The graduates join the more than 155,000 Stony Brook graduates from around the world who carry on Stony Brook’s mission in both their lives and work.

Joel Foundation Donation Grammy Award-winning artist and recent Kennedy Center Honoree, Billy Joel, through The Joel Foundation, has once again generously provided for students and faculty in Stony Brook Music Department by donating another premiere concert piano; this time it’s a Bosendorfer Imperial Grand Piano, considered the “Rolls Royce” of pianos. “I ran into Billy Joel last August in Sag Harbor and thanked him for the Baldwin Grand Piano he donated several years ago,” said Perry Goldstein, the Professor and Chair of Stony Brook University’s Music Department. “He told me he’s heard very good things about the music program at Stony Brook and said that he might have another piano for us. Some months later, we received the Bosendorfer.” The Bosendorfer has

nine more keys than a conventional piano, which enables a completely new octave and elicits a huge, rich, luxurious tone. Worth $250,000, the highend concert grand piano is housed in Staller Center recital hall where it has been played by members of the piano faculty and piano students in the graduate program. “Stony Brook attracts over 100 graduate applicants in piano each year who are eager to study with our superb piano faculty, Distinguished Professor of Music Gilbert Kalish and Professor Christina Dahl,” said Goldstein. “We are pleased to add this showcase piano to our fleet of concert grands in the department and thank The Joel Foundation for their generous support of music at Stony Brook.” The gift was made possible by The Joel

Recently, County Executive Bellone was joined by John Corrado, Tom Mcateer and Ray Grimaldi of Suffolk Transportation Service, Joe Delgado of Suffolk Independent Living Organization and Department of Public Works officials to announce the commencement of Sunday bus service on eight bus routes in Suffolk County beginning January 5th, 2014. “Providing additional transportation opportunities for Suffolk County will give residents who are in need of transportation on Sundays the opportunity to shop, attend church services, and get to work without having to rely on family or friends or just not having the opportunity to travel on Sundays,” said County Executive Bellone. “I would like thank Legislator Schneiderman for sponsoring this

Making Time For The Important Things

School’s out! It is Christmas vacation for over 1700 students attending St. John the Baptist DHS in West Islip. For hundreds of thousands of other students throughout the world, it is Winter Break. Due to my attendance of Catholic school, I have been brought up associating Jesus Christ with the holiday season. Now, more than ever, we are becoming exposed to the importance of “keeping Christ in Christmas.” Although the season may lend itself to a period of gift giving and pseudoreligious celebration, the true meaning of Christmas cannot be lost. On December 25th, we remember the birth

of the most important figure associated with Christianity. Although the messages present in modern Christmas advertisements - generosity, unity and family time - are evident, it has become clear that we are slowly losing sight of what the holiday means. From both a religious and a child’s viewpoint, it seems easy to combine both a spiritual and a material Christmas into one holiday that we can all celebrate. For instance, at Mass last week, St. John’s own Father Rob spoke about how we can seek Jesus’ love by loving others. By treating others with respect through gift giving and spending time with

legislation and supporting transportation initiatives in the County as well the Welfare to Work Commission. We started with the East End, providing Sunday bus service on two routes and now we are rolling out service to eight additional bus routes.” The expanded Sunday service will also be available for the Suffolk County Accessible Transportation para-transit riders. “We must do everything we can to improve our transit infrastructure and provide options for our residents to travel throughout Suffolk County, said County Executive Bellone. “Investments in our infrastructure serve as economic development initiatives which will help to grow our economy and provide for a sustainable economic future.” “This expansion of service is the single largest increase in service in the history of Suffolk County Transit,” said John Corrado, President of Suffolk Transportation Services. “I am pleased to be a partner with Suffolk County and continue to look forward to opportunities where we can provide our riders with enhanced services and improved communications. In addition to the

The American Heart Association Go Red For Women movement is about turning around these statistics. It’s also about resources, information and hope. Donations to Go Red For Women help support our efforts to educate women and to fund breakthrough research by the American Heart Association that helps ensure women are represented in clinical studies. Siegel is represented by the Prince Street Gallery in New York City where she has had several exhibitions. Siegel lives in New York City’s Westbeth, the Artists’ community and the Adirondack Mountains. “During the many years that I worked with elementary-aged school children in a program I created and called ‘Our Place’, I had the daily opportunity to observe and support children fully engaged in what comes naturally to them: imaginative play,” Siegel said. “In turn, I found myself incorporating its principles into my artistic practice; exploring whatever materials

around me can do, taking inspiration from impulses, body sensations, and dreams; and following the free play of hands that like to make shapes that together can then take me to never-before-seen destinations. Nothing is off limits - the only rules are ones I might happen to make up -or change -along the way.” Ruminations will open with a reception on Thursday, February 13th, 2014 at 3:30 p.m. when both artists will be present to discuss and answer questions about their work.

Ruminations will be on view from the reception on Thursday, February 13th through Friday, March 14th. The Gallery West is located at Suffolk County Community College’s Michael J. Grant Campus Captree Commons, Crooked Hill Rd., Brentwood, NY.
