Giving back at any age is a way of life for the Lots of Love Club, a team of community volunteers from Jefferson’s Ferry Lifecare Retirement Community. The dozen or so members of the club, who reside in the skilled nursing and assisted living accommodations at Jefferson’s Ferry, regularly raise funds to make donations to various not for profit organizations in the surrounding communities. The club’s effort is twofold. First, the club holds a fundraiser on the premises of Jefferson’s Ferry, selling items that they have made to residents, employees and visitors. They have, for example sold homemade baked goods, chocolate dipped pretzels and holiday ornaments. With the proceeds, the club then purchases items to donate to a local charity. “The Lots of Love Club is incredibly dedicated and resourceful,” said Jennifer Barrett, director of therapeutic recreation at the Bove Health Center at Jefferson’s Ferry, who

worth of dance recital recordings… Add to that the fact that, given the option, I would much rather watch a DVD movie rental on a flat screen TV as opposed to my computer monitor. Sure, I realize most people stream media on their laptops nowadays; but I’m not most people, and I would like to have the option of viewing movies on something larger than a smartphone. Hence, my request for this outdated piece of machinery, the gift
that keeps on giving, allowing us the pleasure of reliving those timeless memories on a larger scale. Priceless, if you ask me. So once the winter weather settles in and hibernation starts looking awfully appealing, I plan to fire up the old (new) machine and have myself a minimarathon of movies, TV series I’ve been meaning to catch up on – and of course those classic dance routines. TOY DISTRIBUTION - NuHealth officials welcomed Legislator Dennis Dunne, along with Marine Major Chuck Kilbride and hospital supporter Bobby Kumar as they visit children in the pediatrics ward of NUMC to hand out hundreds of toys as part of the Toys For Tots program. The group gathered outside NUMC to unload the toys from the truck delivering the pallets filled with toys, bicycles and games for children of various ages.
Dance Students Perform This past weekend, Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) students danced in the world premier production of the new ballet “Cracked.” The LIHSA dancers performed with dancers from the Nomad Contemporary Ballet Company and the American Theater Dance Workshop, as well as Broadway veteran performers Michelle and Jerome Vivona. “Cracked” is a reimagining of Tchaikovsky’s timeless holiday classic, “The Nutcracker” and destined
to become a holiday hit. The story follows Kara — the granddaughter of Clara from the original ballet — as she takes an epic Christmas Eve journey through New York City to the Land of Sweets. Audiences meet exciting new characters and are reacquainted with old favorites. “We are thrilled with this opportunity to pass on to the next generation of dancers, all we have gained from our experiences on the stage, as well as from the many amazing choreographers, directors, teachers and fellow
performers we have had the privilege of working with over the years,” Ms. Vivona said of the production. “This has been a wonderful experience for our students,” said LIHSA Principal Dr. AJ Hepworth. “They learned firsthand about the audition process and the rigors of working with a professional dance company. They were extremely excited about it and completely committed to the task,” he added. “They rehearsed tirelessly, devoting their time on weekends and after school.”

Each year, Catholic Health Services (CHS) seeks nominations from its staff for the Patrick J. Scollard Award for Leadership. This year’s winner of CHS’s highest honor is Richard C. Bie, licensed professional engineer and assistant vice president, plant engineering for Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center, West Islip. Chosen from among colleagues across CHS, he was recognized at the system’s 11th annual leadership conference, held at the DeMatteis Center in Greenvale. “Richard’s commitment to Catholic Health Service’s mission is apparent in both word and deed,” said CHS President and Chief Executive Officer Alan D. Guerci, MD. “He is dedicated to assuring that those who seek care are provided the best possible environment.” Bie has spent the better part of his career applying his unique skills and talents to the health care industry, including the last five years with Good Samaritan.There, he implemented energy efficiency processes throughout the hospital such as operational changes to shut off equipment during unoccupied hours, a house-wide steam trap maintenance and repair program, expansion of a central chilled water distribution system, and replacement of older lighting within the main hospital and off-sites with newer, more efficient LED lighting. Also, he collaborates with others throughout the facility in planning for and addressing complex challenges to improve results, leading to significant cost savings, simpler processes and quicker response times. For more than 30 years, she has been a proponent of the CHS mission, developing, implementing and sustaining one of the largest mental health service delivery systems in Nassau County. Her career began when there was little funding to operate programs, so she had to creatively staff and run with both quality and efficiency. Having identified a need for residences for those with a mental health diagnosis as well as an intellectual or developmental disability, she presented the idea to administration. Polar Bear Plunge Participants in the Coney Island Polar Bear Club’s ninth annual Coney Island Polar Dip will plunge into the frigid Atlantic Ocean on New Year’s Day to raise money to send more New York families to Camp Sunshine. The January 1st fundraising event will test the mettle of participants who must dip into nearfreezing ocean waters at Riegelmann Boardwalk in historic Coney Island in Brooklyn. Stop Colds Before They Start The stuffy nose, aches and pains that often accompany the common cold can leave sufferers feeling miserable for a week or more. Cold season seems to kick into high gear when the temperatures drop, but this can be the year you don’t come down with a case of the sniffles. The following cold prevention tips can increase your chances of making it to spring without losing any days or sleep to the common cold. • Keep kids clean. School-aged kids tend to carry home lots of germs, so when kids get home after a long day at school, make sure they wash their hands thoroughly and change
into fresh outfits. Such precautionary measures can keep colds and other illnesses from running rampant through your house. • Go outdoors and get some fresh air. It’s a myth that cold air will bring on a cold. In reality, being outside instead of congregating indoors with other sick people may decrease your risk of getting a cold. Don’t be afraid to go outside when the temperatures drop for fear of getting sick. Fresh air and exercise can be good for you. • Drink plenty of fluids. Keeping your body hydrated will help flush toxins out of your body, strengthening your immune system and
making it more capable of fending off colds. • Keep your distance. Did you know the cold virus can be shot up to three feet away when someone sneezes? The virus travels on the small droplets of saliva and mucus that get propelled from the nose and mouth of a sick individual. If you know someone is sick, stay as far away as possible and wash your hands frequently, paying special attention to your fingertips. • Wipe down surfaces. The cold virus can live on surfaces for up to 24 hours. That means a sick person can easily transfer a virus by touching a computer keyboard or remote control he
or she shares with others. Use disinfecting wipes or warm, soapy water to clean off doorknobs, telephones, light switches, cabinet handles, and anything that is frequently touched around a home or business. • Let it out gently. Blowing your nose forcefully or pinching your nose to hold back sneezes can irritate nasal passageways and make them more vulnerable to infection. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. If you are well, keep your hands away from your mouth, nose and eyes. Viruses are especially good at entering the body through the mucus
membranes located in these areas of the body. A combination of frequent handwashing and avoiding touching your face can keep colds at bay. • Maintain your exercise routine. Regular exercise can boost the body’s immune system and help it to fend off foreign invaders, including the cold virus. A recent study found that taking vitamin C in addition to daily exercise can reduce your risk of cold and cut the duration of the cold should you get one. Before taking any supplements, speak with your doctor to make sure they won’t interact negatively with other medications. • Recognize that
antibiotics are not the answer. Antibiotics are only effective at treating bacterial infections, not viruses, which means they are ineffective at fighting the cold virus. • If you do get sick, play it smart. Should you succumb to a cold in spite of your best efforts, steer clear of others so you are not spreading the virus. Rest and fuel your body with healthy foods and beverages. There’s no need to visit a doctor for a cold unless you have a fever after several days of being sick. Colds normally last between seven and 10 days. If your symptoms do not improve or if they seem to be worsening, visit your doctor.

The New York School Bus Contractors Association has presented the United Way of Long Island with a check for $3,640 and the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund with a check for $1,610. The money was raised during the New York School Bus Contractors annual convention held in October in Port Jefferson. New York School Bus Contractors Association President Robert Pape
