Harmony Café is a nonprofit with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, yet affordable, meals to all who walk through their door. They’re a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation.

Heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 5 killers of Long Island women.For more than a decade, women have been fighting heart disease individually and together as part of the Go Red For Women movement. Cardiovascular diseases cause one in three women’s deaths each year, killing approximately one woman every minute. Since 1984, more women than men have died each year from heart disease & stroke. An estimated 43 million women in the U.S. are affected by cardiovascular diseases. When you get involved in supporting Go Red For Women by advocating, fundraising and sharing your story, more lives are saved. The Long Island American Heart Association’s 17th Annual Go Red For Women Luncheon on Wednesday, February 28th, 2018 at the Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury from 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The 2018 American Heart Association Go Red For Women Luncheon is nationally sponsored by Macy’s and CVS Health. Catching Snowflakes “We have only this moment, sparking like a star in our hand ~ and melting like a snowflake.” ~ Sir Francis Bacon As we approach the end of 2017 and look ahead to the new horizons of 2018, we reflect. Each year is full of its own moments, fleeting instants of happiness and sadness, anger and elation, all coming together to form this composite of life as we know it. And in those moments, we form the memories which carry us forward to the next chapter. There are two schools of thought relating to this; the first is that things have the ability to change in the blink of an eye, to take on an entirely new, often unexpected
direction. This can be in the form of a beautiful surprise, or a tragic turn; there is simply no telling. We are well aware of these possibilities. In fact, we will often remark how grateful we should be for the present, how appreciative of our blessings and those whom we love dearly. And yet, somewhere along the way, we tend to forget how very lucky we are.

Of course, all the theorizing in the world can only accomplish so much. A life on paper is not a life at all; the words must take shape in our actions and follow through in order to make any discernible difference. And, in that, we create our very own snowflake, a composite of our unique qualities and circumstances, our passions and personalities. No two are alike, and each one is exceptionally fragile and should be handled with care.
The second rationale follows the logic that, simply because the calendar has flipped its pages does not mean that any other substantial changes are destined to follow. New year, new you… but only if you take the necessary steps to make it so. Local resident Marilyn Heller recently learned she was the lucky winner of an extraordinarily beautiful handmade quilt. Raffled off by the Center Committee of the Smithtown Senior Citizens Department, the quilt entitled “Maureen’s Autumn Dreams” was a labor of love for a group of quilters from the Smithtown Senior Citizens Department. The patchwork quilt
boasted stunning shades of cranberry, amber and green and was the grand prize in the annual fundraiser. Each year a beautiful quilt, along with many other handmade quilted items and gift cards, is raffled off by the Senior Citizens Center Committee at the year-end Holiday Dance. All proceeds are used for the benefit of the Smithtown Senior Citizens Department.
The quilting group meets every Wednesday starting at 9:30 a.m. at the Smithtown Senior Citizens Department new members are always welcome! A New Year, A New You!
New Year’s Eve is upon us - a night filled with merriment, an abundance of food, plenty of alcohol, and of course those dreaded resolutions. For me, it became an annual ritual to tell myself this is the year you’re going to lose weight and get healthy. This year is different for me and, for the first time, my goals have expanded. I want to be more active and take advantage of my newfound energy, as opposed to engaging in activities simply to lose weight and not be in pain, short of breath, uncomfortable. I want to work out more and focus on specific areas, as opposed to going to the gym and struggling to work out comfortably in order to burn calories to lose a few pounds. I want to help more people realize their health goals. This is new... I have been given a gift to help others, and for that I am thankful. So, when you are thinking about the resolutions you want to make this year,
ask yourself: If you were GUARANTEED success, how much weight loss would you write on your New Year’s resolution? Would it be: 0-10 lbs., 11-25 lbs., 26-49 lbs., 50+ lbs.? Joy described how Duke’s paws were cut and bleeding, and how she wrapped them in bandages. After changing the bandages four times a day for the next two days, she thought, “there has to be a better way.” So she created what she called “special bandage booties”. They were like socks on the outside, but lined with

Fourteen year-old animal educator and journalist Victoria Bonavita recently had a chance to interview inventor, entrepreneur and author, Joy Mangano - who is best known as the inventor of the Miracle Mop and appears regularly on HSN. Joy, who comes from Smithtown, was also the subject of the 2015 movie ‘Joy,’ that featured an all-star cast including Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro and Isabella Rossellini. The two met at her book signing that was hosted at
gauze on the inside. The idea worked, and Duke got better. And so began the path of becoming the nation’s most celebrated female inventor. Victoria asked Joy’s advice for anyone who invents something for a pet. She told her the first thing to do is protect the idea, either with a trademark or a patent. Then you must take your idea and follow through to make it a product that’s salable - “then the animals can benefit,” she said. She told Victoria you don’t need to be super smart or an expert to create an invention. She stressed, if you have an idea or a vision, “you need to follow through.” Adding, many people get discouraged and feel they can’t do it because there are so many obstacles. But, she said; “You can - “just take it one step at a time - because if you stop, you will have a 100% chance of getting nowhere.” Victoria said she was honored to meet such an inspirational woman and looks forward to working with her again.

Gorging themselves on leaves, gypsy moth caterpillars weaken and can kill more than 300 different species of trees. Since 1970, they’ve defoliated more than 75 million acres. The Answer That’s why the U.S.
Department of Agriculture requires homeowners by law to inspect and remove gypsy moth egg masses from household goods prior to moving across state lines— and get an official certificate of inspection. What You Need To Do • Check all outdoor household goods—lawn furniture, grills, outdoor toys, camping equipment—for egg masses. • Use a putty knife, stiff
brush or similar hand tool to dispose of any egg masses you do find into a container of hot, soapy water, or place them in a plastic bag, seal it, and set it in the sun. To get the certificate, you can perform a self-inspection or hire a state-certified pesticide applicator. The American Moving and Storage Association says you should then give the inspection certificate to your moving van driver.

First Tech Challenge Long Island Lutheran Middle & High School (LuHi) was once again home to FIRST® Tech Challenge Scrimmages – presented by SchoolBusiness Partnerships of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI), which brought science and creativity together on a robotics playing field. On Saturday, December 9th and Sunday, December 10th, twenty-nine teams from across Long Island competed in a friendly tournament-style scrimmage that prepared them for the upcoming season of FIRST RELIC RECOVERYSM (presented by Qualcomm). Teams, comprised of students age 12 to 18, worked alongside adult mentors to design, build, program and operate robots to play a floor game in an alliance format on a 12-foot by 12-foot field. This season, FIRST Tech Challenge teams across the world are asked to don their adventurers’ hats to create robots capable of retrieving opponentcolored jewels from platforms, scoring glyphs into crypto boxes, creating cipher patterns, moving “relics” to a recovery zone and parking their robots
on “balancing stones.” FIRST Tech Challenge is an international program featuring hundreds of tournaments for more than 46,000 students in nearly 20 countries. Students demonstrate their problem-solving skills, creative thinking, teamwork, competitive play, sportsmanship and sense of community. During all FIRST Tech Challenge tournaments, teams work in alliances with the goal of scoring more points, awarded through accomplishing the aforementioned tasks, during 150 seconds of game play, which includes autonomous and drivercontrolled periods, on a 12-by-12-foot playing field. Last weekend’s scrimmages were the first events in the 2017-2018 FIRST Tech Challenge season on Long Island. Long Island students will then use these robots to compete in Qualifier tournaments at Lynbrook High School (Sunday, January 7th, 2018); Center Moriches High School (January 13th-14th, 2018); and Sewanhaka High School (January 27th28th, 2018). Students will compete at these
events for a chance to ultimately advance to the Championship tournament at Smithtown High School West (February 11th, 2018). “FIRST Tech Challenge is growing rapidly on Long Island and we are excited to see what this season holds,” says Janet Anderson, Program Director and SBPLI/FIRST Long Island representative. “We are incredibly thankful to LuHi for the generosity of welcoming us back for our second year, and for providing us with the assistance to expand to a second day of scrimmages. IN THE HUNT - Kindergartners at Accompsett Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District became detectives on December 18th, scouring their school for the gingerbread man. When they finally found him, they were surprised to find it wasn’t the gingerbread man; it was Accompsett Elementary School Principal Jeanne Minarik. Christmas came a little early this year to the young patients at Cohen Children’s Medical Center, thanks to the kindness of technical wizards at Presidio and Cisco Systems. Through the Cisco Santa Connection, patients who are unable to celebrate in the comfort of their own homes due to illness can still experience the magic of the holiday. Using a video monitor and web-enabled camera today, Santa “virtually” visited with children in the third floor playroom who were eager to discuss their holiday wish lists. electric guitars and video games to toy trucks and art books. In the meantime, Santa (who spends the rest of the year as a Cohen Children’s employee) spoke lovingly to the children who were accompanied in the playroom by Child Life staff members dressed as elves and other holiday characters. And, for those who didn’t feel well enough to leave their rooms, a mobile cart or iPad enabled with Cisco Jabber software helped Santa travel room-to-room for a personalized bedside visit – all of this without once leaving his workshop in the North Pole, according to the children. “We’re so happy that Cisco was able to bring their expertise once again to Cohen during
this holiday season,” said Patricia Ottavanio, special events coordinator at Cohen Children’s. “Thanks to them, we are able to bring Santa to the children. During this time of year, it’s very difficult for children and their loved ones to be away from home. Events such as these help make Chanukah and Christmas a happier time for these families.” Brian and Keri Adams, of Central Islip, joined their infant son, Derek, in the playroom. Watching with happiness as he banged on a little drum, Derek’s parents said: “This event makes children feel like they’re not in the hospital. We appreciate the effort being made by everyone here today to being Santa to our children.”

Hands On Lessons Fourth-grade students at Dogwood Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District had an in-depth look into Iroquois history thanks to lessons courtesy of Journeys Into American Indian Territory on December 19th. The students rotated through different stations throughout the day during
the in-house field trip, learning about the ways of the Eastern Woodland Indians. The students took a “museum tour” in the gymnasium, looking at different hunting spears and weapons and touching different types of animal skins. They learned about the tribe’s hunting and building techniques and even had a chance to spend
time in a longhouse. The students also learned about the women’s role in the tribe and tried their hands at grinding corn. During another station, students listened to the American Indian art of storytelling. Students also played traditional Iroquois games and learned about their music and instruments.
