New Year’s Resolutions Work, If You Work Them. Last year, on December 31, 2017, I elected to spend New Year’s Eve quietly at home with my son and one of my brothers, and it was fabulously serene. We cooked a beautiful meal, watched movies, had some heart-to-heart talks and sat together on a big comfy couch to watch the ball drop. That night, as 2017 turned to 2018, I thought about the fact that I hadn’t had my entertainment column since I’d exited an in-house editor position that I worked at from 2005 through 2012. I thought about how much I missed speaking with interesting people and writing their stories. It has always felt like my life’s work. In that moment, I declared to myself that 2018 would be the year that I would bring my column back to life, and this go around, I would own my own intellectual property and be the master of my own fate. I put it out there for the universe to work its magic and let it go. On the morning of January 3, 2018, I sprang out of bed with an inspired idea. I would contact
entertainment editors around the world, introduce myself and my old column, let them know I was looking to begin again and ask if they would like to join my new syndication network. I am not sure what it was, the planets aligning, or perhaps the universe conspiring to make my New Year’s resolution come true, but before I knew it, I had one hundred media outlets across the globe on board. Now, as I approach New Year’s Eve 2018 and New Year’s Day 2019, I look back at what I have accomplished with my entertainment interview column. I am filled with pride that I didn’t just take another aimless trip around the sun this past year. I made every moment count and my New Year’s resolution was accomplished. As you are aware, I have not one, but two columns (of course “Living Well” is the second, and happened most serendipitously). One year ago today, I did not have either. That’s how much a life can change in a year. I don’t state this to brag, but to turn you into a believer, because
I want your New Year’s resolution to happen for you, in spades, in 2019. I want you to look back in December of 2019 feeling on top of the world because you just took the most productive and joyous trip around the sun; greater than you ever thought was within the realm of possibility. We’ve all heard the jokes made about how everyone is going to join a gym and get into the best shape of their life or finally sit down at the computer to write that novel. I get it. But frankly, what does that have to do with you? So some people don’t follow through. Be the person who does. Whether or not you cross more amazing things off your bucket list in 2019 or put your dreams in the “coulda-woulda-shoulda” pile is in nobody else’s hands but your own. It could be something leisure related. Perhaps you have been meaning to take an art class or a course at your local college. Maybe you want to learn to cook. There are no small goals; no small desires. On December 31st, declare it so, and make it so.
Options was formed in 1982 to respond to the need for supportive housing for people with serious mental illness. The Mental Health Residential Program grew rapidly, and in 1994 Options introduced case management services to Long Islanders living with HIV/AIDS. Soon after, a housing program for this population was started as well. More recently, Options has partnered with Long Island Health Homes to offer care coordination services to high need Medicaid users with chronic illnesses through the Access to Care Program. As of today, Options serves more than 1,800 adults and children annually through its programs and manages over 180 scattered housing sites across Nassau and Suffolk counties! Options care coordinators help connect people to health care services and a myriad of resources. Often their clients are homeless or on the brink of homelessness. This is especially difficult when young children are involved. Last year, the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless reported that on a given night in January, 3,937
people on Long Island are homeless. 75% are families with children. The following story shows an example of what is possible when help is provided and hope is not lost! When their care coordinator Fran first met Linda, she and her daughter had been homeless for over a year and were living in a women’s shelter. Linda had experienced a lot of trauma in her life, the greatest of which was learning that she had contracted the HIV virus following a long-term relationship. Fran provided Linda with some housing resources and when she found an apartment, Fran helped her apply for financial assistance to cover the security deposit. Linda has maintained her housing for over a year now! “The most satisfying feeling came over me during my first visit to Linda’s apartment,” said Fran, “when her daughter pulled me by the hand to show me her room.” If you wish to inquire about receiving help as well, or you want to volunteer and or donate to this organization, please contact their Development Director, Denise Waterhouse at DWaterhouse@OptionsCL.org!

Each week I write this column that I started a little over a year ago, but for this issue I wanted to mention a fundraiser that I started through an oragnization that is very dear to my heart, The Water Project. The Water Project is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that unlocks homan potential by providing reliable water projects to communities in sub-Saharan Africa, which suffer from a lack of access to clean water and proper sanitation. My fundraising goal is $12,000, which if reached will allow this organization to fully fund a water project in a needy community! Smithtown Central School District’s School of Business and the World Language Department, in conjunction with the Smithtown Industry Advisory Board, held its 15th annual International Business Career Day on Dec. 14 in the library of Smithtown High School West. The event is a collaborative effort of the business and world language departments from Smithtown High
Schools East and West. Students were selected by their teachers to attend and approximately 80 students took part in the day’s events. After opening remarks by Mary Pat Grafstein, executive director of the Smithtown IAB and workbased learning coordinator for the high schools, and John Coady, Smithtown High School West principal, keynote speaker William Laraque addressed students about the global
career opportunities. More than 15 guest businesspeople from a variety of fields were on hand to speak with students about their career options. Speakers were from a variety of areas including translation services, law, banking, law enforcement, import/export, commerce and education services. Students were given the choice to sit down and talk with six different guests for a 15-minute period during round-robin style sessions.

The title for this column has been taken from a recording by Louis Armstrong, titled, What a Wonderful World. This was one of the songs played as background music for the film Good Morning Vietnam, and was particularly meaningful to me since it showed a scene on the senseless meaning of war coupled with the heart-warming lyrics of the song. I really like this message, since I believe it runs parallel to the events of the world today. With all of the tumult going on, (for example, as I write this I became aware that a partial shutdown of the government may take place), I think, “Is the correct course of action to mope around and feel sorry about upcoming events, or to instead let it slide, and, while being aware of the ramifications involved, keeping a positive attitude about life in general. I much prefer the latter. Let’s be a bit more specific; I will be representing my own point of view here. The war in Yemen appears to be coming to an end with both sides now in the process of cease-fire talks. Let’s

hope for the best here. The political infighting in Congress is coming in to an end as the New Year approaches. It will be refreshing if we see all of our elected representatives drop their titles as either Republican or Democrat, stop voting along strict party lines and vote for the solutions that are best for the country. I have high hopes that with the passing of time, that will start to happen. The solution surrounding immigration will be harder to solve quickly, but I have faith that cool and impartial heads will lead the way. One area which is challenging is the continuing disagreement surrounding the UK and Brexit (their exit from the European Union). It appears the British are evenly divided between staying in the union versus leaving it. Being an eternal optimist, I do feel that both sides will settle on provisions fair to both sides, and that peace will once again settle in. One only has to consider the bright side of things with a positive attitude to realize it truly is a wonderful day. As just one example, take a look at

And I Think to Myself, What a Wonderful World! the huge advances in medicine. Years ago, a male could expect a lifespan of approximately 70-75 years. Today, barring unforeseen circumstances, the same person could now expect to live into their late eighties. Every day one could read about new advances in cancer research, diabetes and a host of other ailments that effect the body. As promising as that is, it raises some new concerns for our aging population. It was one thing to retire at 65 and have the money to comfortably live in retirement for another 5-10 years. It’s a different story when you are still living into your late eighties. Do you have enough money to support your lifestyle if you live that long? But look at it this way, that’s not a bad problem to have! It is truly a wonderful day for younger folks; specifically those who are between the ages of 25-35. They were never exposed to the wild swings on Wall Street or to the threat of being drafted and being away from home for many years in a strange and dangerous land. A good way to illustrate the
importance of positive thinking is demonstrated by an example I bring to every class I teach, at both the undergraduate and graduate level. I draw a pitcher of water and fill it approximately halfway to the top. I ask the students to, by a show of hands, let me know if they think the pitcher is half full or half empty. You can guess the rest… the optimists will always say that the pitcher is half full, while the pessimists will state that it is half empty. This shows that however you perceive things will affect your way of thinking. You can simply try to be more optimistic about life each and every day, no matter what your circumstances are, by saying to yourself every morning when you awake, “It’s going to be a wonderful day!” In most cases, it will certainly be a great start for your day! Thin chicken cutlets, pounded Liquid whole beaten eggs in a bowl Large bowl of Rice Krispies Marie’s Creamy Italian Dressing Wash chicken cutlets and pat dry Dip each cutlet in liquid egg Roll cutlets in Rice Krispies bowl Place egg-dipped, Rice Krispies covered cutlets on 10x13 baking sheet Drizzle a generous tablespoon (or two) of Marie’s Creamy Italian Dressing over the top of each cutlet Bake chicken at 325 degrees for 30 minutes. Avoid Surprise, Winterize (NAPSI)—As the weather gets colder, winterizing your vehicle should be a top priority. The nonprofit Car Care Council recommends that motorists perform a sixpoint winter maintenance check of areas that are particularly affected by driving in rough weather. “Harsh weather can stress out a vehicle, as well as its driver,” explained Rich White, executive director of the nonprofit Car Care Council. “A vehicle that’s properly prepared for the elements can help you avoid an unplanned road emergency when the weather takes a
sudden turn for the worse.” Six-Point Vehicle Check 1. Battery—Cold weather is hard on batteries, so it’s wise to check the battery and charging system for optimum performance. Because batteries don’t always give warning signs before they fail, it’s advisable to replace batteries that are more than three years old. 2. Antifreeze— Antifreeze (coolant) should be flushed and refilled at least every two years in most vehicles. Don’t add 100 percent antifreeze, however. Surprisingly, full-strength antifreeze actually has a lower freeze
point than when mixed with water. 3. Brakes—Have the brake system checked. Brakes are critical to vehicle safety and particularly important on icy or snow-covered roads. 4. Tires—Check the tire tread depth and tire pressure, including the spare. If you’ll be driving where snow and ice are a problem, consider special tires designed to grip slick roads. Check tire pressure weekly, as tires lose pressure when temperatures drop. 5. Oil—Be diligent about changing the oil at recommended intervals
and check the fuel, air and transmission filters at the same time. Consider changing to low-viscosity oil in winter, as it will flow more easily between moving parts when cold. In subzero driving temperatures, drop oil weight from 10W-30 to 5W-30 as thickened oil can make it hard to start the car. 6. Lights and Wipers— Make sure all exterior and interior lights are working so you can see and be seen. Check the fluid level in the windshield washer reservoir and replace wiper blades that are torn, cracked or don’t properly
clean your windshield. In addition, the council recommends a thorough vehicle inspection by a trusted professional service technician as winter magnifies existing problems such as pings, hard starts, sluggish performance or rough idling. Drivers should keep their vehicle’s gas tank at least half-full to decrease the chances of moisture forming in the gas lines and possibly freezing and stock an emergency kit with an ice scraper and snow brush, jumper cables, flashlight, blanket, extra clothes, bottled water, dry
