The Marines live by the motto of never leaving anyone behind. For some that includes a dog they have rescued during deployment, and have bonded with. The loyalty from Captain Dave and his unit and the dog that they rescued goes both ways, and now his wish is to bring her back home to the United States with him when he returns soon. Guardians of Rescue have helped other military members pull off this same mission, and they are seeking public donations to help pull it off again. “Captain Dave’s loyalty to Sox is like no other, and he believes in the idea of not leaving her behind,” explains Robert Misseri, president of Guardians of Rescue, an animal rescue organization. “We know that we can help bring Sox back to America to live out her life with him, but we need the public’s support, because it’s costly to do. We are grateful to be working with Nowzad shelter in Kabul, because without their assistance this pup would not have a chance of coming to America.” Captain Dave is stationed in a remote area in Afghanistan. He is scheduled to come back home to the United States in early 2020. He can’t imagine leaving Sox behind because he loves her. He first saw Sox when she was a puppy, finding her caught in concertina wire in their camp. He freed her, gave her food and water, and sent her on her way. However, Sox had different plans. In the days that followed, Sox started coming back to their camp each day, feeling safe around the unit and seeking food and water. Some of the other men had even seen the dog being abused out on the streets. Soon, Sox began staying by their side all of the time, even tagging along on some of their missions. On a recent patrol, Sox ventured too far away from
the unit and was whipped with a stick by a local. It was at that time that Captain Dave knew he could never leave her behind to fend for herself. “The bond I have with Sox is something I didn’t expect, but I just can’t leave her behind,” says Captain Dave. “If I don’t bring her home with me I am afraid I’ll always regret it and wonder about what happened to her. I appreciate any assistance people can give in helping me to bring her home with me.” Relocating a dog from the Middle East to America

BALL DROP While not everyone can venture to New York City’s famed Times Square to watch the ball drop in person, millions tune in around the world to watch it on television. Original celebrations in New York centered around listening to the bells of Trinity Church ring at midnight, but the New Year’s Eve celebrations were later moved to the New York Times building in 1904. This fall, students in Mr. McGuire’s Modern Engineering course at John H. Glenn High School completed several projects to beautify the campuses of the Elwood Union Free School District. Using ColorCore boards in Elwood signature colors, students constructed replacement signs for Harley Avenue Primary School, James H. Boyd Intermediate School and the district office. Students measured the existing signs, designed digital files using Autocad software and cut and engraved the signs using a CNC Router. Elwood’s building
and grounds department assisted with taking down the old signage and putting up the new ones. At Harley Avenue, the “Kinder Garden” sign was also in need of repair. Students drafted their own designs to replace the old sign using Autocad and the digital renderings were compiled onto a voting ballot for students at Harley Avenue to vote on. In the end, the students selected a design by high school junior, Max Stein. Max’s design was cut on the CNC router and is now on display outside of Harley Avenue in the “Kinder Garden.”

Window decals have replaced printed signs on our windows and doors, offering visitors directions for entering the building. We are so proud of the work our students are doing, the skills they are learning and how they are collaborating to give back to their school community,” Director of Math, Science and Technology Eileen KellyGorman said.
SNOWMAN FACTORY AT ST. JAMES - St. James Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District turned into a snowman-making factory when the kindergartners started assembling snowmen on Dec. 16. Set up in the school’s multipurpose room, the students, along with an adult volunteer, created snowmen out of socks filled with rice. An Inside Look At International Careers Smithtown Central School District’s School of Business and the World Language department, in conjunction with the Smithtown Industry Advisory Board, presented the 2019 International Business Career Day at the Smithtown High School West library on Dec. 13. More than 75 students, chosen by their teachers to attend, participated in
the 16th annual event. Eleven guest speakers presented to the businessminded students from both Smithtown High School East and Smithtown High School West. The professionals spoke about the careers and fields of interest. Krupa Lauricella of FTZ Strategies offered the keynote address. Following the opening presentations and
keynote, the students spent the morning and early afternoon rotating through different breakout sessions in small groups depending on their area of interest. Lunch was catered by the home and career students from Smithtown High School West and featured international delights from various regions. SMITHTOWN’S SUFFOLK ZONE WINNERS - Four Smithtown seniors were honored with Suffolk Zone Awards at a ceremony on Dec. 4. The winners, chosen by the Smithtown Schools physical education staff, are the top male and female physical education students in the graduating class. Criteria for achieving this honor, as defined by the Suffolk Zone Chapter of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, include earning an A average or above a 90 in high school physical education classes, earning an overall grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale at the completion of the 11th grade year, and being a physical fitness role model, as well as character and leadership assessments.
