School Food Drive

ealizing the Smithtown Food Pantry would be bare after the Thanksgiving holiday, the Smithtown High School East School of Business members started their annual Food Drive in November. The Drive ran through December 11th, allowing the food to be delivered to the Smithtown Food Pantry just in time for the Christmas holiday. Pictured are the students with some of the contributions. The visit was part of the Ducks’ annual Holiday Toy

Drive, where QuackerJack and team members deliver toys to children in pediatric units in hospitals across Long Island. The month-long effort resulted in hundreds of children receiving toys this holiday season. Popular to thousands of families on Long Island, the Ducks are members of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball and play locally at Bethpage Ballpark in Central Islip.

Santa was the guest of honor at the annual Breakfast with Santa event at The Children’s Center at United Cerebral Palsy of Suffolk in Commack on Saturday, December 7th. The very special and jolly guest arrived dressed in a red and white fur suit and was greeted by scores of children with disabilities who attend the Children’s Center. Staff and parents worked diligently to transform the school’s gymnasium into a winter wonderland. Families welcomed the opportunity to have their picture taken with Santa and participated in the elaborate raffle. Over 200 children and adults enjoyed a hearty breakfast

made possible by the generosity of The Louro Family and Professional Group Plans. “Seeing the excitement on the children’s faces when Santa arrived was priceless. Our volunteers and staff did a wonderful job. There was so much warmth and caring in the room, it was wonderful. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is hosting a series of six open houses for prospective campers and families of children and young adults with special needs over the next several months. Parents should bring their child if he/she will be a new camper in order to allow them to get a sense of the camp and what they will experience throughout the summer. During the tour, parents will have a chance to meet the staff — the camp’s director, nurse and office manager — and ask questions or address any concerns that they might have. They will have the opportunity to view the entire camp and explore the different areas dedicated for various activities such as arts and crafts, adaptive sports, games, etc. The open houses will

be held on the following dates and times: January 20th, from 1 to 5 p.m. February 17th, from 12 to 5 p.m. February 20th, from 7 to 11 a.m. March 9th, from 5 to 8 p.m. April 4th, from 4 to 8 p.m. May 17th, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages six to 21 with both physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to help these children to achieve equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education. Throughout the program, campers participate in many

activities, such as arts and crafts, talent shows, cook-outs, swimming and boating. The camp is located on Chet Swezey Road in Center Moriches.

Ghosts Of Christmas Past By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I prepare to host my very first holiday gathering – well, any gathering really – in my new apartment this Christmas Eve, I cannot help but reflect upon the many wonderful memories from past celebrations, most of which took place in the comfort and warmth of Grandma and Grandpa’s house. With the passing of my grandmother earlier this year, there was an immediate sense that this holiday season would be a bit different. So many years – decades, really – spent gathered around the big dining room table each Christmas Eve, of “helping” Grandma bake her famous Christmas cookies (basically watching and waiting and then sneaking a couple as soon as they came out of the

oven), of marveling at the gigantic Christmas tree and the beautiful decorations… of hoping that, one day, I would be lucky enough to have a house as beautiful and as full of love as Grandma and Grandpa’s. Well, my little apartment gathering may be coming together on a bit of a smaller scale, but the sentiment is the same. Any time family and loved ones get together to celebrate, memories are made – and preserved for future generations to appreciate, and add to. My only hope is that they are never lost. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to put together a project back in college for my Family Literacy class which asked us to illustrate one family tradition through words and photographs, providing details

and dialogue, recipes and anecdotes, creating a scrapbook of memories. I chose Christmas Eve and all the traditions that came with it for my family for the first 20 or so years of my life… from our traditional “table photo” taken from the top of the staircase, to my Uncle Al, also since passed, mixing the martinis as we arrived and, later on, after the first three or so courses of dinner, fighting with me for that last fried shrimp. How precious that project is today. By the time you read this, my little celebration will have come and gone, and with it, new memories made. Who knows, maybe one day it will become the stuff of scrapbook legend! Either way, I know I will have at least two angels watching over things to make sure all goes smoothly.

As you are reading this, I have already found out my first college decision. Hopefully, I was accepted. Unfortunately, the odds are not in my favor. As a college that accepts a fraction of its applicants, my dream school is certainly not a guaranteed acceptance for me. As you can already tell, I am not willing to divulge the name, as I am afraid to jinx myself. As much as I want to attend that school, the ball is in their court. Early last year, I developed my love for the college. Hopefully, this love is not platonic. I sent in my application over two months ago, on my birthday. I have been

stressing out over their decision ever since. As I am writing this, mile marker zero is less than eighteen and a half hours away. Next week, you will be hearing if I made it in or not. It was a scary road, going from a kid to an adult in just a few months. During the summer, I knew that the time was approaching; but as soon as September hit, my college application game was kicked into overdrive. Hopefully, I will never have to apply to another college again. With any luck, I have already gotten into the school I have fallen in love with. There is no doubt in my

mind that this school is right for me. If only the admissions officers could read my articles, they would know just how interested I am. All of my hard work will boil down to one of two words in a letter from that college. The first line of that letter will read either “congratulations” or “unfortunately.” Preferably, it will be the former, but everything happens for a reason. I will be content wherever I end up attending, even though I will never be able to shake that possible feeling of rejection. Stay tuned...

Prior to this work, Ms. DeVito served at the Huntington Youth Bureau in the Drug and Alcohol Project as the Prevention Specialist. Her main focus was on facilitating special programs in the schools and prevention counseling. Kelly earned her bachelor’s degree from Towson University in health science with a concentration in school and community health and master’s degree in health education from Adelphi University. She also is a Certified Health Education Specialist and has a New York State teaching license in Health Education.

Massachusetts Artist Alice Denison focuses on flowers in her art. “The flowers that interest me most are the ones on wallpaper, fabric, and paintings — the decorative ones, the ones that make no claim to meaning. The ones we walk on, sit on, eat on, sleep on, and wear…the backdrop flowers. Because these decorative flowers almost always remind me of something, some time, or someone, they have meaning. Because the meaning is associative, it is mysterious, and its mystery makes it more interesting still. It is this glimmering to life of an inert form that sparks my work.” Commack artist Lisa Fernandez has been a teacher and art educator on Long Island for 25 years. Working in oils, Lisa’s large-scale still life paintings use of bold colors and strong contrast. Lisa’s

close attention to detail and composition skills allow her to create strikingly beautiful images. Amal is a fine artist and illustrator from Port Jefferson who delights in having brushes in her hands and bringing stories to life. Her illustrations sit somewhere between fantasy and realism and the theater has been an inspiration for many of her pieces. Amal has provided numerous illustrations to children’s book publishers and editorial publications. She also teaches illustration and drawing. Port Jefferson artist Michael Kutzing is a selftaught painter who worked in the construction industry for 37 years. Over the years he collected maritime paintings and was inspired to attempt painting himself. He was encouraged by those who saw his work to continue painting. Thirty paintings and several shows

later he continues to grow as an artist. Setauket artist Elizabeth Louise sketched her drawings live during rehearsals at Theatre Three in Port Jefferson. “Capturing the character of actors on stage is a challenge. I do not have the luxury of having them pose for me during rehearsals. My degree from Maryland Institute College of Art gave me the training and confidence to combine, decades later, my sketching skills with my first love in the arts…theatre.” In the words of Brooklyn artist, printmaker, and bookmaker PD Packard, “There is an absolute law of harmony, accessible to all, that is an endless source of inspiration and knowledge that I rely upon when creating and executing my artwork.” A storyteller through her prints, watercolors and hand-bound books, PD Packard’s work is truly unique and thought

provoking. Centereach artist Courtney Surmanek is a current bachelor of Fine Arts candidate at New York University, completing her final year. Courtney, who works in several different mediums including video, performance and material art, looks at art as a means toward community development and social change. She is excited to help young people develop the skills necessary to expand their scope of what art can do for the world Mount Sinai artist Burton Woods’ realistic paintings are inspired by places that are slowly changing or disappearing: quiet, flowerbordered lanes, brick walks, weathered wooden buildings and boats, sandy beaches and wind-swept marshes. Kelly stated in her opening remarks that Youth Bureaus provide positive youth development services to all youth and their families in their community. The New York State Commission Act was created in 1945 by the New York State Legislature to focus on juvenile delinquency and youth development. To encourage municipalities to establish local youth service programs, the state provided monetary incentives that matched every dollar the municipalities allocated to these programs. The intent was to provide services for the personal development of youth and to prevent, detect, and treat delinquency throughout the state. Each of the 109 county and municipal Youth Bureaus’ services are tailored to meet the current needs of their constituents. The Smithtown Youth Bureau was established in 1980. Services provided by the Smithtown Youth Bureau are made possible by funds received from the New York State Office of Children and Family Services, the Suffolk County Youth Bureau, and the Town of Smithtown. The mission of the Smithtown Youth Bureau is to serve as a community resource, dedicated to an active and assertive process of creating the social conditions that promote the well-being of children, youth, and families.
