COURT OF HONOR - Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta recognized Christopher March for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout at his recent Court of Honor held at the Commack United Methodist Church. For his Eagle Scout Project, Christopher cleared out an area at Hoyt Farm and created a new siting environment with four benches made of wood and a fire pit surrounded by boulders. He planned, designed and built the project with the help of his fellow scouts.
Jingle Bell Run
Approximately 50 students and staff members participated in Hauppauge Middle School’s 5th annual Jingle Bell Run on December 18th. The Jingle Bell Run is a one-mile run that takes place at the middle school prior to the start of classes. The first 50 students and staff members who
signed up to participate in the Jingle Bell Run received a free special student designed longsleeve T-shirt and jingle bells for their sneakers to wear for the run as well as throughout the rest of the day. “In addition to enjoying a fun holiday event, the Jingle Bell Run teaches
students about the importance of exercise and maintaining their physical health all year long,” described Principal Maryann Fletcher. “This healthy holiday event has become a favorite tradition at Hauppauge Middle School.”

Last week, at both the final Suffolk County Legislative General Session of 2014 and Legislator John M. Kennedy Jr.’s legislative career, Legislator John M. Kennedy, Jr. honored long-time resident, activist and volunteer to the community, Elaine Renner with the 12th Legislative District Community Activist of the Year Award. The generosity of the Burr family is truly remarkable - over 600 sets of pajamas were collected! The Child Life Services Department at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital is an integral part of the hospital experience for children. Brook Rose,
a Child Life Specialist, explained that the team members help children and their families become more comfortable during their visit. They explain the hospital experience in child-friendly ways, ‘normalizing’ the hospital experience, offering tours and other orientations activities, keeping play at the forefront and providing therapeutic, educational and recreational activities that meet the unique needs of each child. Children staying overnight receive a Child Life Welcome Kit which includes a new set of pajamas, books, toys, and sometimes even video games! Ms. Rose came to Burr
and was overwhelmed by the size of Burr’s donation and the generosity of the Commack Community. She was happy to report that 115 sets of pajamas would be given out immediately at the annual Cancer Clinic Holiday Party. In addition to creating the Welcome Kits, the pajamas will be presented as Hanukah and Christmas Gifts. Many thanks to our Student Council Representatives and Advisors (Mrs. Keri Cestaro, Mr. Thomas Hand, Mrs. Jeanette LaMountain and Mr. George Morrish) who raised awareness at Burr for this very worthy cause.
Soccer Champions Honored
At the December 9th Town Board meeting, Huntington Supervisor Frank P. Petrone congratulated the Commack High School Boys’ Soccer team for winning the Class AA New York State championship last month. Commack defeated Fairport, 2-0, in a game played November 16th
in upstate Middletown, capping a season in which the team went 21-1-1, earning the school’s first state soccer title in almost 20 years. Supervisor Petrone and his Town Board colleagues took special note of coach Dave Viegas, assistant coach Dave Moran and some of the team members: Anthony Izzo, who
scored both goals in the championship game and who was the most valuable player of the finals; Ryan Nigro, the most valuable player of the Suffolk County championship game; Justin Cebollero, a team captain and Suffolk County player of the year; and captains Connor Gill and Gene Sicoli.
Pines Elementary School has launched a composting program to help reduce the volume of trash produced and to create nutritious compost for the flower beds. The students will begin by composting fruits and vegetables. They will be taught to separate their waste between the trash can and the “compost bin” when they dispose of their lunch byproducts. Each week, one elementary school class will be responsible for transferring the contents of the “compost bin” to the compost tumbler that
is located at the cafeteria end of the courtyard. At 1:45 p.m., a small group of students from the weekly designated class will come to the cafeteria, roll the “compost bin” to the courtyard door and carefully transfer the waste into one of the compost tumblers. They will then rotate both sides of the tumbler to mix the contents. The compost tumbler is a side-by-side unit, and only one side will be used at a time. Once that side is full, the other side will be used while the content of the first side
decomposes. If all goes well, there will be finished compost before the second side is filled. Pines students also will begin to recycle their lunch trays to help reduce the garbage volume. The trays take less space when they are stacked, and therefore, will require fewer trash bags to be used. Eventually, all lunch trays will be recycled at facilities on Long Island, and the Pines students will be fully prepared for when the tray recycling process is fully implemented in all the schools.

RAISING FUNDS FOR FAMILIES - Hauppauge High School’s Students Council and National Honor Society teamed up to host the 2nd Annual Winter Activities Festival. Proceeds from this fundraising event will go to the Adopt-A-Family Campaign, which will provide assistance to Hauppauge families in need during the holiday season. The Christmas season officially began at Good Samaritan Hospital Nursing Home with the 5th Annual Cookies With Santa program on December 4th. All the residents and their families enjoyed crafts, cookies and hot chocolate, with Christmas music provided by a DJ. There was also a visit from Santa with a photo opportunity for the whole family. To help make the season more meaningful, staff assists the residents in writing out and sending their loved ones beautiful cards for Christmas. Later in the month, the recreation staff will wrap a small gift for each resident so that everyone has something to open on Christmas.

‘Tis The Season For Memories By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Christmas time is here, once again, and as we all prepare to celebrate the season with our families, friends and loved ones, I find myself reminiscing upon the many fond memories of Christmas’ past. With that sentiment in mind, some excerpts from last year’s Christmas column… As I prepare to host my very first holiday gathering in my new apartment this Christmas Eve, I cannot help but reflect upon the many wonderful memories from past celebrations, most of which took place in the comfort and warmth of Grandma and Grandpa’s house. So many years spent gathered around the big dining room table each Christmas Eve, of “helping” Grandma
bake her famous Christmas cookies (basically watching and waiting and then sneaking a couple as soon as they came out of the oven), of marveling at the gigantic Christmas tree and the beautiful decorations… of hoping that, one day, I would be lucky enough to have a house as beautiful and as full of love as Grandma and Grandpa’s. Well, my little apartment gathering may be coming together on a bit of a smaller scale, but the sentiment is the same. Any time family and loved ones get together to celebrate, memories are made – and preserved for future generations to appreciate, and add to. My only hope is that they are never lost. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to put together a project back in college for my Family
Literacy class which asked us to illustrate one family tradition through words and photographs, providing details and dialogue, recipes and anecdotes, creating a scrapbook of memories. I chose Christmas Eve and all the traditions that came with it for my family for the first 20 or so years of my life… from our traditional “table photo” taken from the top of the staircase, to my Uncle Al mixing the martinis as we arrived and, later on, after the first three or so courses of dinner, fighting with me for that last fried shrimp. How precious that project is today. By the time you read this, my little celebration will have come and gone, and with it, new memories made. Who knows, maybe one day it will become the stuff of scrapbook legend!

Smithtown High School West’s Distributive Club of America (DECA) sponsored a holiday tree lighting festival at St. Catherine of Siena Medical Center on December 4th. The event included warm refreshments, delicious treats and performances by
the Great Hollow Middle School select chorus, the Smithtown High School West jazz choir, the Accompsett Middle School kickline and the Smithtown Dynamic Twirlers. West DECA also conducted a food drive and Santa made an appearance,

D.C. Together with their Student Council Advisors, Tara O’Grady, Kathi Woolley, and Beth Considine, the representatives invited a classmate to join them in the merriment. Each student created a card to express appreciation
and town planning board members on November 20th. Every team set out to achieve one goal: have their campaign chosen as the one to promote and help reinvent the downtown Smithtown corridor. Seven finalist teams were selected to present to a larger collaboration of judges. Many ideas were floated during the presentations, including utilizing the district’s New York Avenue campus for outdoor concerts and/ or movies. Teams also proposed underground roadways and railways to alleviate traffic concerns. One team proposed converting the lumberyard into a go-kart arena and even relocating Whisper the Bull to the center of town so more people could admire the statue. Along with the live commercial, students
presented print ads and other promotional pieces, as well as outreach and electronic/social media strategies. After students made their case, “The Main Street Masters” were named the top presenter. Each team member was awarded $75 and a personalized jacket, while the other six finalists received smaller cash prizes and gift cards to local establishments. The Main Street Masters is comprised of Kalia Cerbone, Jainee Gabrielsen, Ryan Micozzi and Chris Miller. This year’s platinum sponsor was People’s United Bank. Lynn Barnhardt’s State Farm agency was a gold sponsor and Damianos Realty, Raul E New York and The Sexy Salad were all silver-level sponsors.
