Pleasant Elementary School in Smithtown were able to experience democracy in action as they listened to speeches from candidates running for school president, vice president and secretary on December 4th. They listened to candidates give speeches on why they should be elected for each office. Each candidate gave a speech filled with great ideas to help others and make the school a better place to learn and grow.

The Hauppauge School District united in September with the goal of collectively walking 911 miles in the First Annual Patriots Month Walk to benefit the Nesconset-based Feal Good Foundation, which assists first responders who are struggling with illnesses related to 9/11.
The inaugural charity walk was organized by Hauppauge High School Seniors Craig Bottner and Teressa Mercurio as part of their International Baccalaureate Diploma Program Creativity, Action, Service project requirement. While the Patriots Month Walk fell short of it 911-

After opening remarks by Mary Pat Grafstein, executive director of the Smithtown Advisory Board and work-based learning coordinator, and John Coady, Smithtown High School West principal, keynote speaker Kevin McCrudden spoke to students about the importance of taking their

Christmas time is here. The days and weeks and months of planning and preparation, of shopping and wrapping and decorating and baking, have all led to this brief window of time, from Christmas Eve through Christmas Day, which lends itself to all sorts of magical moments and memories. These are the days we remember for years to come, the snapshots we savor, the recipes we pass down from generation to generation. Say what you will about the commercialism and chaos that has engulfed our society – this the time we
can recapture the true spirit of the season. Speaking of commercialism, anyone who attempted to purchase Adele tickets in the last week or so was faced with the reality that, unless you have thousands of dollars at your disposal to splurge on a pair of seats at MSG, you had best sit back and enjoy that $15 CD and accept the fact that live performances are becoming increasingly out of reach for the average consumer. For me, two straight days of manically refreshing my browser during both the advance sale and general sale led to nothing but wasted time and ample frustration. ‘Tis the season, indeed. The upside? In
the grand scheme of things, being deprived of live entertainment (temporarily, as I haven’t given up quite yet) isn’t the end of the world. As we prepare to turn the page on yet another year, we should give thanks for the important things – our health, our loved ones, the ability to celebrate with family and friends… perspective. And with that, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Learning to Program All 4th and 5th grade students in Hauppauge School District’s Elementary Schools recently participated in the Hour of Code program through Khan Academy. “Hour of Code is a fun, simple way to teach students the basics of computer programming in 60 minutes,” described Forest Brook 4th Grade Co-Teachers Jeanine Brusca and William Boehle. “Coding makes it possible for individuals to create computer software,
websites, apps and video games. The students learned how to construct simple Snowmen using code.” “The Hour of Code program is designed to spark the young students’ interest in computer science and to encourage them to pursue careers in this STEM field,” stated Brusca and Boehle. “The program showed the students that coding actually plays a role in everything we do, and why it is important for everyone
to have access to this information. The students really enjoyed participating in the Hour of Code and found it to be a worthwhile and meaningful classroom experience.” Hour of Code is part of a national campaign, whose goal is to raise awareness of what coding is and to introduce coding into the U.S. educational curriculum. Computer programming jobs are growing twice as fast as the national average of other jobs.
