Therapy dogs, by comparison, interact with all of those around them in a room. They provide tangible health benefits

Gifting a Puppy This Holiday Season? Read These Tips First

Warm And Wow Guests With Homemade Hot Mulled Apple Cider When hosting friends and family at home, it’s understandable that hosts direct so much of their focus to the foods they plan to serve. The main course is often the focal point and most memorable aspect of a dinner party, and that’s true whether the get-together is a backyard barbecue, a holiday meal with the family or a formal affair with colleagues. Food might be a focal point, but guests also will need something to drink. Traditional spirits like wine and cocktails are the standard, but hosts who want to get a little creative should not hesitate to do so. When choosing a special beverage, timing is everything. Guests wil want to cool down on warm summer evenings, so something cold and

refreshing can make for the perfect signature cocktail. When hosting on nights when the mercury has dropped, a warm beverage can heat up guests in a matter of minutes. On such nights, hosts can serve this version of “Hot Mulled (Sherried) Apple Cider” courtesy of Laurey Masterton’s “The Fresh Honey Cookbook” (Storey). One added benefit to Masterton’s recipe is it can produce a welcoming winter aroma, helping hosts establish a warm ambiance for the festivities. Hot Mulled (Sherried) Apple Cider

4 sticks cinnamon 1/4 cup honey, preferably cranberry honey 1 cup sherry (optional) 1. Combine the cider, orange slices, cloves, cinnamon, and honey in a large pot over medium heat. If you are picky about things floating in your cider, make a little bundle out of cheesecloth and place the cinnamon and cloves inside before adding to the cider. I like to chew on cloves, so I just toss everything in. Bring to a boil, and then reduce to a simmer over low heat for an hour or so to spread these lovely winter aromas around your home.

Serves 16 1 gallon apple cider 2. If you’re serving it to 1 orange, unpeeled, cut adults, add the sherry. It into slices might make everyone want 1/4 cup whole cloves to go sledding!

Smithtown’s Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony The Town of Smithtown held the Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony on Wednesday, December 1st, 2021at Town Hall. The community based event is organized by the Department of Recreation, with support from the Parks Department and Public Safety. The tree is illuminated by the Department of Traffic Safety. The evening’s Master of Ceremonies was John Zollo (former Town Attorney) with live music provided by local DJ, Just For the Record. The Smithtown Fire Department delivered Santa from the North Pole just shortly after 6PM. “This was an outstanding and much needed event to get Smithtown in the holiday spirit, and you could feel the energy in the crowd! Last year we went virtual with Santa and held a very small tree lighting ceremony. So it was great to see everyone together again... I want to commend the talented young people who performed, and send my gratitude to the Department of Recreation for making this ceremony so extraordinary. Thank you to the Parks Department who worked around the clock to set up and breakdown the stage and equipment, as well as our Department of Public Safety who kept everyone safe

and guided the Fire Trucks to Town Hall. I think I was just as excited to see Santa as the kids were this year!” Supervisor Ed Wehrheim This year’s live performances, from local school districts, were conducted by the Smithtown High School West Whisperettes (Junior Varsity and Varsity) Kickline, the Hauppauge Varsity Kickline, Smithtown High School West Jazz Choir, the Great Hollow Middle School Chorus, and the Accompsett Middle School Chorus. Each group performed Christmas favorites for a crowd of approximately 250 people. The Recreation department served Cookies and Hot Chocolate, which was donated courtesy of Lessing’s Hospitality Group. Balloon Sculpting was provided for kids of all ages by Animations. The Town of Smithtown collected non-perishable items for the Smithtown Emergency Food Pantry during the event. Residents who wish to make a donation to the Food Pantry may do so in person at their location: 90 Edgewater Avenue in the hamlet of Smithtown. Sadly, Katie’s Food Truck was destroyed in a tragic fire just days before the ceremony and was unable to attend the

celebration. A GoFundMe. com page has been created to help the local business restore it’s famous food truck. Katie’s of Smithtown is located at 145 W Main Street (just beneath the train trestle) in Smithtown, NY.

Long Island State Parks To Host 27th Annual Winter Run Series The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation is pleased to announce that the Long Island State Park Region will host its 27th annual Winter Run Series beginning January 2022. The series will begin Sunday, January 9th at Heckscher State Park. Additional runs will be held January 9th at Heckscher State Park, January 16th at Robert Moses State Park, January 23rd at Sunken Meadow and January 30th at Jones Beach State Park. All races are themed, 5K in length, and will start at 11 a.m. Registration is open for

Bank of America Names New York Marine Rescue Center a 2021 Neighborhood Builder® to Support Ecological Conservation Efforts on Long Island

New York Marine Rescue Center (NYMRC) will be able to expand its marine conservation and educational programs through a multi-year grant from Bank of America, after being named as a 2021 Bank of America Neighborhood Builders® awardee for its impactful work on Long Island. This comes as the center prepares to treat sea turtles impacted by cold stunning a phenomenon similar to hypothermia, which occurs annually on Long Island in the fall and winter months when sea turtles are exposed to cold water for extended periods. As a Neighborhood Builder, NYMRC receives $200,000 in unrestricted funding over two years as well as leadership training on topics ranging from increasing financial sustainability, human capital management and strategic storytelling, joins a network of peer organizations across the U.S. The program continues to be the nation’s largest investment into nonprofit leadership development. NYMRC has seen an increased need for marine rehabilitation services as changing ocean temperatures disrupt marine environments, while experiencing a decrease in volunteers due to coronavirus. Being one of the largest rehabilitation

facilities in the region, during the 2020/2021 cold stun season, the NYMRC took in an additional 29 sea turtles from network partners due to limited space within the network. Additionally, the center is expanding its educational programs to reach schools not only on Long Island but in Florida and Puerto Rico, expanding knowledge of marine ecosystems and inspiring young people to participate in conservation efforts. “The New York Marine Rescue Center is protecting Long Island’s marine life, while also educating and empowering children and adults to take steps to conserve our oceans,” said Marc Perez, President, Bank of America Long Island. “These efforts are crucial to Bank of America’s commitment to drive progress on important challenges facing society, including our work to address climate change and preserve Earth’s natural resources.” “The flexible funding provided through the Neighborhood Builders program will allow us to expand our capacity to rehabilitate marine animals, build a more diverse staff and board, and assist with emergency situations that may arise, particularly as the cold stun season approaches for sea turtles. Commack Schools Receives Large Number of Highly Qualified Applicants for Superintendent’s Position Commack Union Free School District’s superintendent search consultants, Western Suffolk BOCES, has completed its scheduled focus groups with various District stakeholder groups, including Board members, Commack central administration, school building administrators, representatives from all District bargaining units, parents, and the greater Commack community. Using input gathered during these sessions, as well as responses to an online survey that was made available to the Commack community through the month of November, 2021, the search consultants have generated a composite of the characteristics, skill sets and qualifications most desired by the Commack community in its next superintendent of schools.

There were 1,099 responses to the online Community Survey, with 289 comments. Many of the respondents represented district residents with children currently in Commack schools. There was great consistency in the responses across all groups, including the desire that the successful candidate demonstrate the following: • Collegial leadership • Instructional leadership • Communication and responsiveness • Recognition and value of all stakeholders • Visibility in the District and community. These salient qualities and characteristics as emphasized by parent groups, students, staff, and other community stakeholders will be used by the Board of Education as

guideposts for the criteria they will be using as they move to the next phase of the search process, which is reviewing candidate applications and subsequent candidate interviews. The initial candidate screening and application review process will continue through the end of December 2021. After this initial vetting, the Board will begin the first round of candidate interviews that will last through March 2022. During April 2022, it is anticipated that final candidate interviews and background checks will be conducted leading up to the final selection to be announced in April 2022. The successful candidate will officially assume the position of superintendent of schools on July 1, 2022, the start of the 2022-2023 school year.
