December 8th. The tradition of the Peace Light started in Austria in the late 1980’s. The “Peace Light” campaign was originally organized by the Austrian Broadcasting Co. and is still part of a great charitable mission for handicapped

children and people in need. Each year, a child from Upper Austria fetches the light - a live flame- from the Grotto of the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, where Jesus was born. The light is then transported to Vienna, Austria under the auspices of the International Scouting Movement and distributed throughout Europe. In recent years it has also been brought to the United States. The aim of the Peace Light is to bring people the light and the Peace Message, which encourages everyone, especially Scouts, to actively create peace in

The Diocese of Rockville Centre’s Catholic Committee on Scouting in conjunction with Our Lady of Perpetual Help in Lindenhurst hosted an International Peace Light Ceremony and Advent Lessons and Carols featuring scripture readings and songs of the Advent season on Friday, December 2nd. Reverend Monsignor Joseph DeGrocco welcomed everyone. Diocesan Scouting Chaplain, Fr. Frank Zero, a Parochial Vicar at Our Lady of Perpetual Help also attended the service. Approximately 300 people attended the service including Scouts and Scouters from Nassau and Suffolk County in addition to the parishioners of Our Lady of Perpetual Help R.C. Church and many from across Long Island. The Lessons and Carols featured children, teen and adult choirs as well as a full complement of instrumentalists. Refreshments and fellowship followed. In addition to the sharing of the Peace Light in Lindenhurst, the flame was passed from candle to candle and to individual’s lanterns when it was also shared at St Joseph’s RC Church (Ronkonkoma) on Sunday, December 4th, at their Lessons and Carols, at St Thomas More RC Church (Hauppauge) at their Tree Lighting ceremonies on Saturday, December 10th (following their 5pm Celebration of the Holy Mass), as well as in East Northport at Cub Scout Pack 5’s monthly Pack Night on December 9th. Also, the Peace Light was shared at the Matinecock District’s monthly Scouting Roundtable meeting (held at John Glenn HS, Elwood) on Thursday,

Art is a powerful medium of expression. Particularly for the aging, it can present an opportunity to open up to outsiders what may be a lifetime of inspirational images never before shared. Thirteen artists who happen to be residents of New York State skilled nursing and assisted living facilities translated visions from their hearts and minds into winning entries of a juried art contest, now featured in a 2017 calendar, “Art from the Heart.” The annual calendar is the result of an art contest launched in 2004 by the Foundation for Quality Care, Inc., the New York State Health Facilities Association (NYSHFA) and the New York State Center for Assisted Living

their own environment and communities During the weeks before Christmas, Scouts distribute the light to now more than 30 European countries. In recent years, it has also been brought to the United States through the generosity of Austrian Airlines, and the cooperation of the Brooklyn Catholic Committee on Scouting and the Greater New York Council. This year it is being shared throughout the United States and Canada, and has even being brought to Mexico. In past years the Peace Light has been presented to Pope Francis, Pope Saint John Paul II, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, Mikhail Gorbachev, King Hussein of Jordan, members of the European parliament in Strasbourg, and the United Nations Troops in Kosovo. In December 2001 it was brought to Ground Zero. The International Peace Light is a worldwide symbol of peace and brotherhood. The light is given from one person to another as a gift with the wish for peace and forgiveness among all human beings. Worldwide, communities’ seeking international friendship and peace is a special concern of all Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, here and abroad. According to the ideals of Scouting, everyone is encouraged, all nations and peoples, through personal contacts to actively create Peace and fear-free living in their environment by being tolerant towards different ethnic, cultural or religious groups.

My Night Before Christmas By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

It’s been over ten years since we last celebrated Christmas Eve at my grandparents’ house. Over 20 years of my life, from childhood onward, were spent around that grand dining room table, enjoying our traditional fare of spaghetti with garlic and oil, complemented by anchovies and walnuts for the adults, just plain tomato sauce for me. This was followed by massive piles of fried shrimp, filet of sole, fried mushrooms, all prefaced by a giant platter of antipasto of course. And then, there was dessert, that array of homemade cookies – baked lovingly by my grandma and grandpa. I’m not sure where the recipes originated from, or if they were my grandmother’s own personal spin on some old favorites, but they were delicious. I recall, somewhere during my college years,

becoming interested in the actual process that went into creating these tasty treats. I set up camp at my grandparents’ kitchen table, rolling dough, cutting it into tiny strips, twirling it into a cookie shape and – best of all – drizzling the icing on top. Yum. How I miss those traditions. Looking through some old photo albums recently, I came upon dozens of snapshots of these Christmas Eve gatherings, pre-dating even little old me in some cases. The decorations may have changed through the years, and even the cast of characters to some degree… but certain things remained a constant. The tree for instance. That big, beautiful Christmas tree which stretched to the cathedral ceiling, adorned by what seemed like hundreds of sparkly ornaments… surrounded by dozens of shiny presents, wrapped with

perfection by my grandfather. And always, at the end of the night, there would be that “one more” gift that would be brought up from the basement, usually the best of all. But above all that – the presents, the food, the frenzy to have everything run perfectly from beginning to end within a reasonable interval of time (seven hours or so, give or take) – were the memories made with those people, in that house. Priceless memories. When I grow up, I had always thought, I want every Christmas Eve to be exactly like this. Of course, when you’re a child, they don’t have the heart to tell you that things will never be quite the same, or that perfect, ever again. How grateful I am that it was though, even for a brief moment in time. Merry Christmas to all. May your Eve bring even a hint of that same magic.

Proceeds from the calendar will help improve the quality of life for long term care residents at facilities across New York. Each NYSHFA/NYSCAL member was encouraged to hold their own art contest and was invited to submit up to two pieces of original artwork by their residents. The response was overwhelming, with more than 85 pieces submitted from across New York state. The judges included representatives from the New York State Museum and the Sorelle Gallery in Albany. Ranging in age from 57 to 97, the different backgrounds of the artists who submitted work creates a unique blend of artistic styles. Some are professional artists who have been drawing and painting their entire lives, while others discovered their talents after moving into a long term care facility where they began taking art classes. “Our residents have shared such rich stories through their artwork,” said Richard S. Patterson, Jr., executive director of the Foundation for Quality Care, Inc. “The ‘Art from the Heart’

teachers to participate in the year-long program at the Institute of Creative Problem Solving for Gifted and Talented Students at SUNY Old Westbury. The students selected for this prestigious honor rank in the top one-tenth of one percent of math students in their respective grades from across Long Island. “We are very proud of these five students for

this significant honor that they have received. Their teachers have fostered an environment where their love of math has grown and expanded over the years,” stated Director of Mathematics Lauren Knudsen. “Hauppauge School District and the Math Department are delighted to acknowledge Devin, Ryan, Keertana, Jalaj and Linette.”

residents have parlayed this vocational training into paid employment at various Long Island retail establishments. Interestingly, many Options residents still continue to volunteer “with their families” at the Thrift Shop in addition to working at their paid jobs! Options resident Charlie R. has developed a strong bond while working with Thrift Shop volunteer Paul Bocci from Nesconset. “It is not likely that I would have crossed paths with Charlie without Options,” said Bocci who began volunteering at the Shop when he found himself at loose ends in retirement. “Today, I’m proud to call Charlie my ‘brother from another mother.’ I also cannot adequately express the respect I have for him, for all the volunteers who work here as well as for everything that Options for Community Living does to help people in need.” For his part, Charlie is a highly dedicated individual who “loves working at the Shop” and even received an unexpected benefit from volunteering. The 72-yearold walks two miles to and from the Thrift Shop

to get to work, which his doctor credits with helping Charlie to significantly improve his cardiac health. Taking a Trip Photojournalist Mike Harrold recently visited sixth-grade students at Accompsett Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District and shared a multimedia presentation that showcased his journeys to the faraway lands. Harrold highlighted

famous sites such as the Great Pyramids, relating his visit to the students’ unit on ancient Egypt by providing the audience with interesting information about mummification. He also shared his adventures to the large cities and small villages of Africa, China

and India. After the large group presentation, sixthgrade social studies classes visited Harrold in a smaller setting throughout the day, where they closely examined some of the artifacts from his many trips abroad.

The Parent-Teacher Association at Mills Pond Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District hosted a holiday giveback with Pieces of Energy jewelry on December 8th.

Pieces of Energy offered students the opportunity to make two jewelry pieces, one to keep and one to be donated. The students donated their extra piece of jewelry to children who are part of Bob

Sweeney’s Camp H.O.P.E. Camp H.O.P.E provides bereavement programs to children and their families who have suffered a family loss.

(FIT) campus in New York City. The students learned about various FIT programs of study, including: Fashion Design, Fashion Marketing, Jewelry Design, Photography, Fine Arts, among others.

They also had an opportunity to view the textile lab, computer lab and design studios as well as observe current FIT students at work on their designs.

Students at Dogwood Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District tried their hands as computer coders when they participated in the

Hour of Code during the week of December 5th in recognition of Computer Science Education Week. Students in grades K-2 used Scratch Jr. on iPads

during their library media classes. Grades 3-5 used Code.org and Scratch in the computer lab. Every student was awarded a certificate at completion.

Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities, Inc. (ACLD), a leading Long Island-based, not-for-profit agency headquartered in Long Island devoted to providing opportunities for children and adults with autism, learning and other developmental disabilities to purse an enviable life, has launched a Foundation to focus on fundraising and increasing awareness of ACLD’s mission, which is being headed by new officers and board members recently appointed. Incorporated in 2016, the ACLD Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization created to support and raise funds for the exclusive benefit of Adults and Children with Learning and Developmental Disabilities, Inc. Alan Spiegel of Dix Hills is the Foundation’s first president. “The establishment of the Foundation will allow

a greater focus on raising money and securing new support to help ACLD,” said Alan Spiegel, President of the ACLD Foundation. “It also will allow the ACLD Board of Trustees to focus primarily on operational issues for the organization, and I’m proud and honored to serve as the Foundation’s first president.” Spiegel, whose wife Ellen serves on the ACLD Board of Trustees and whose son has received support from ACLD for more than 40 years, is a senior advisor with Anchin, Block & Anchin, LLP. He has worked extensively with high net worth individuals, family foundations and non-profit organizations, and has written numerous articles on charitable giving. A longtime supporter of ACLD, Spiegel also serves on several ACLD committees. Along with his wife, Spiegel has been a major gift-giver in support of ACLD, including

their naming donation of ACLD’s Alan and Ellen Spiegel Children’s Center in Bay Shore. Spiegel will work together with fellow ACLD Foundation Officers John Genova of Bay Shore, who serves as Foundation vice president, and Jamie Engel of Port Washington, who the Foundation’s secretary and treasurer. Genova, principal and founder of NOVA Marketing and Communications, brings more than 25 years of global business consulting and management experience to his role. A member of the ACLD Board of Trustees since 2003 and the agency’s current Treasurer, he has helped to lead many development efforts for ACLD. Engel has two brothers who receive support from ACLD, and his family has long-term ties to the agency. As vice president and publisher

of Scholastic National Partnerships, he leads the business and creative direction of supplemental education content and classroom integration projects for marketers and organizations nationwide. New Foundation Launched

Mrs. Keeler introduces the concepts to the students as 7th graders and as they become more experienced in this highly interactive and collaborative method of bringing literature to life, the students’ presentations surely gain momentum. Their sometimes heated debates and active involvement in showcasing the story line for their fellow students are clear evidence of how engaged these young adults are in the reading process, something often lacking in Middle School students today. SSCM’s Lit Circles allow young minds to think analytically about the

Hauppauge High School recently hosted the Town of Islip Anti-Bias Task Force Ambassador Program, which addresses issues of bias, prejudice, discrimination and bullying. “Hauppauge students were among the 100 high school students throughout Islip Town who are learning how to distinguish between reasonable opinions and irrational prejudice and how to identify evidence of biased thinking in their school/classroom and community through this program,” described Assistant Principal Joy Ferrara. Joselo Lucero and Werner Reich were the keynote speakers for the program. Lucero’s path in life was forever altered on November 8th, 2008, when his brother Marcelo Lucero, 37, was beaten

and murdered by seven teenagers in downtown Patchogue, New York. The story of the crime and the defendants’ conviction brought national attention to the issue of hate crimes and the plight of immigrants on Long Island. What Lucero took away from the tragedy, and how he has chosen to dedicate his life, were the themes of his presentation on hate crime prevention and bullying. Smithtown resident and Holocaust survivor Reich, 83, is a retired industrial engineer, a husband to his wife Eva of 55 years, a father of two and a grandfather of four. Reich uses his oppressive experience to talk to young people at schools and synagogues across Island. His message is clear: “if you see bullying and intolerance, you should not be a bystander,

you should be one of the ‘J.U.S.T.’ (judge situation, understand problem, solve and take action) people and stand up and say something.” The Anti-Bias Task Force’s Ambassador Program also featured a presentation of an original play titled Religion Party by Hauppauge’s Stage the Change Players. Stage the Change was founded in 2012 through the Hauppauge High School Drama program after a staggering response to their original creation of The Anti-Bully Project. A series of student-written vignettes, the production was created to address important social issues to high school students, including: prejudice, bullying, peer pressure, healthy relationships and more.
