In an effort to help students get a better understanding of their future career paths, Smithtown Central School District, in partnership with the Smithtown Industry Advisory Board, held an International Business Career Day for business and world
language students from both high schools on December 8th at the Smithtown High School West library. After the keynote speech by Christine Dressler, owner of Evolution of Essence, students met with more than a dozen local professionals in attendance
in a round-robin setting. Each student chose six different professionals to meet with and learn more about their career choices. After spending the day with the international professionals, students gathered information to share with their business and world language classes.

HARMONY CAFÉ
Harmony Café is a non-profit with a mission to reduce food insecurity by serving healthy, yet affordable, meals to all who walk through their door. They’re a proud member of and are based off the established nonprofit restaurant business model developed by the One World Everyone Eats Foundation. When one enters Harmony Café, they will notice there’s a suggested donation of $10, but guests have the option to pay less, pay more to pay it forward, pay nothing, or opt to volunteer at the Café in exchange for a meal - the option of earning a meal without being plagued by the stigma of a handout. This café currently offers one 2 ½ hour event (a fresh meal and entertainment)
on the second Wednesday of each month. They operate out of the VFW Hall at 32 Edwards Street in Patchogue; but with a heart full of passion and the energy of a lion, founder and director Rosemarie McCarthy has a goal to open a storefront for the Café which will operate five days a week for lunch and dinner. Volunteers are needed in the following areas: event planning; volunteer coordinating; servers and kitchen help; community outreach and fundraising. Most importantly, volunteer board members are needed. Individuals from AHRC Suffolk’s Day Habilitation programs and the Suffolk County Parks Department formed a unique partnership to help breathe life back into the Meadowedge Greenhouse Cooperative located on the West Sayville Golf Course. On December 12th, Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone and Suffolk County Legislator Kara Hahn paid a visit to the facility and the individuals working there. The greenhouse is open to the public Monday – Friday 10:30am – 1:30pm for all your holiday plant needs. All the proceeds from plant sales help support this program. They learned about the different methods used by petroleum companies and chemical engineers, such as detergent, clumping and containment booms. Students prepared their mockup of a beach and ocean in a clear plastic container and then spilled the oil into their container.

Last on the List Just five days until Christmas, and I suppose I should begin my shopping soon. It’s funny, with the sole exception of Black Friday when I purchased precisely one gift - I haven’t done so much as compile a list in the days that have elapsed. Perhaps it’s because, save for the usual collection of gift cards and standard annual favorites, there is rarely an occasion when anyone can offer a suggestion of what they would like. Not that I am much better when it comes to this. Most years, a gift card is just as good as any particular object I can come up with, or maybe tickets to an upcoming concert or ballgame. Of course, there are always my two standbys - a trip to Disney World to “meet Mickey,” and a puppy. Yes, the 3 year-old child in me hasn’t quite grown
up yet. Alas, my apartment doesn’t allow for a furry fourlegged friend; besides, my little baby betta Spud would be jealous. They say people have become increasingly thoughtless in the age of technology, opting to do most of their shopping online and “mail it in” when it comes to selecting the perfect present. I, for one, still prefer to personally browse the stores, even if I have a fairly good idea of what I want to buy. Nothing quite compares to that personal touch. So why have I barely begun this process with less than a week remaining ‘til Christmas? An excellent question, deflected by a focus on de-twinkling my flickering window lights, decorating my balcony just in time for the annual cleaning-of-thegutters to completely cover everything in a fine black

layer of dirt and ground-up leaves, and contemplating how to shove all things not Christmas-related into any available corner of the closet. Gift shopping, or even listmaking, not so much. And yet somehow, some way, everything manages to get done each year… even if, at times, it has included wrapping presents in the corner of my bedroom as company arrives on Christmas Eve. No need for ribbons and bows, as long as the box is (relatively) covered and the right person winds up with the appropriate package. In everything, it’s the thought that counts. With that, sending thoughts to all of our readers for a healthy, happy holiday season. Here’s hoping you all receive everything on your wish list.

Four Smithtown Central School District students were presented with the New York State Association of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance Suffolk Zone Award. From Smithtown High School East,
students Matt Cohen and Katelyn McGuigan were recognized. Smithtown High School West receipients were Perri Allen and Tim Nagosky. At the awards ceremony on December 6th, the four student-athletes
were presented with certificates and gold medals recognizing their outstanding achievement as physical education students, scholars and citizens.

Recognized for Contributions Lawrence Sobol at the recent New York State School Music Association’s 82nd winter conference. The presentation focused on Sobol’s contributions to the music program in Smithtown schools. Sobol balanced his career as a professional clarinetist and music educator. During
his tenure in Smithtown, he established the Gala concerts, which serve as a major scholarship fundraiser for the district, and the music parent booster organization, the Smithtown Friends of Music.
Eighth graders at Saints Cyril and Methodius School in Deer Park get ample opportunity to flex their creative muscles while developing teambuilding skills and learning to work cooperatively within a group. Mrs. Judy Keeler, veteran SSCM Middle School teacher uses a studentcentered reading strategy called Literature Circles. Student teams work together to select a book that they will read and then each student plays a specific role in each “Lit Circle,” allowing the group to work together to analyze
the story line and present their take on the piece of literature they’ve read. Mrs. Keeler introduces the concepts to the students as 7th graders and as they become more experienced in this highly interactive and collaborative method of bringing literature to life, by 8th grade, the students’ presentations gain some serious momentum. Their sometimes heated debates and active involvement in showcasing the story line for their fellow students are clear evidence of how engaged these young adults are
in the reading process, something often lacking in Middle School students today. SSCM’s Lit Circles allow young minds to think analytically about the works they are reading. Further, for these students preparing to make their way to high school within the coming year, the process also allows them to take responsibility for their own learning and take ownership of the outcomes of their study habits and collaborative work - life skills they will take with them for the long haul.
World of Minecraft Fourth-graders at St. James Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District had an up-close and personal experience in the world of Minecraft thanks to a special Skype session on December 12th. Student in Robin Baker’s
and Tracy McAlvin’s classes spent more than an hour on Skype with Lydia Winters, Mojang’s brand director at the Minecraft headquarters in Stockholm, Sweden. Students met some of the writers and programmers of the game as well as take a virtual tour of the facility.
After the tour, students asked questions about the game, the headquarters and the different jobs of the Minecraft employees. Winters also sent the class a Minecraft cube to take home.

Promoting Peace Three students from Smithtown Central School District have been named winners for their artwork in the annual 2018 Shanti Peace art calendar. Kayla Pardini, a fifth-grader from Smithtown Elementary School, was selected as a winner and will be presented with $501. Nesaquake Middle School sixth-grader Juliana Paparella was named a winner and will receive $601 for
her submission. Smithtown High School East senior Ilysa Sirota received $1,201 for her winning artwork. This is the 12th year of the annual calendar contest. The Shanti Fund is a charitable group dedicated to promoting Mahatma Gandhi’s ideals and his philosophy of peace. The Smithtown students’ artwork will appear in the 2018 calendar.

Getting Tech Savvy For the third consecutive year, students at Accompsett Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District participated in the Hour of Code from December 4th10th. During Computer Science Education Week, all students at
Accompsett Elementary spent one hour learning the basics of computer programming. Since technology is increasingly shaping every aspect of life, the Hour of Code helps to teach foundational 21st century learning skills. The Accompsett TECHKNOW Kids Club
New Eagle Scout
made a special visit to the computer lab during the week to help students crack the code with both plugged and unplugged activities. Students were engaged, excited and eager to take their education into their own hands.
Suffolk County Legislator Robert Trotta congratulated Conor Pickford of Kings Park for achieving the esteemed rank of Eagle Scout. Conor has been active in scouting since becoming a Tiger Cub in 2005 and was initially a member of Troop 539, where he held many leadership positions and then transferred to Troop 75 for his last couple of years in scouting. For his Eagle Scout Leadership Project, Conor built a walkway as part of an overall 9/11 memorial on the grounds of St. Joseph’s Church in Kings Park. He consulted with Father Sean, the pastor of the church, on the plans, held a fundraiser and supervised the installation of the pavers. The walkway now makes it easier for all to visit the site. With the excess funds, Father Sean was able to purchase benches
for people to sit on at the firefighter who responded memorial. This project was to the World Trade Center very meaningful to Conor 9/11 attack. as he is the son of a NYC
