Soldier Care Packages

retton Woods’ students, faculty and staff recently collected numerous items to fill almost 20 care packages to send to U.S. soldiers overseas for the holiday season. Organized by teachers Mrs. Phelan, Mrs. Czachor and Mrs. Figari, the students collected donations and contributions – including tube socks, playing cards, sunscreen, hot chocolate, candy, baby wipes, games, toothpaste and toothbrushes – for the care packages.

One Of A Kind By: Jamie Lynn Ryan He was just a goldfish. But he was so much more than that, to me anyway. Yes, that’s right readers, dear Harry has passed away, gone off to swim with his pal Harvey in the great fishbowl in the sky. True, he was only with us (well, me, anyway) for two short months, but in that time, we formed a strong bond. Goldfish or not, Harry was my buddy, my companion, my pet… another life I was responsible for making as comfortable and cheery as one can possibly be, living in a plastic bubble and all.

Plus, he was special. This fish had a personality all his own. Maybe it was from crashing into the side of the bowl too often, but he was certainly one of a kind. Never before have I had a goldfish interact with the same degree of almost human qualities; whether it was eagerly watching me prepare dinner, flitting to and fro among the branches of “his” plant, or even cowering behind it on the dreaded “water change” days. And then, after he was safely returned to his home, coaxed out from between the stems with a generous pinch of fish flakes and some loving

attention, all was well in his world again. In the end, I’m not sure what led to Harry’s demise, but I know I did everything I possibly could for him. Maybe he missed Harvey; perhaps a fishbowl was never his destiny. Either way, I believe Harry has gone on to bigger and better things, swimming with all the other fishies, if you’ll pardon the pun, who have gone before him. I do hope he enjoyed his brief time as my adopted pet. I’ll miss ya Harry. There will never be another goldﬁsh quite like you.

CHEERLEADING CHAMPS - On Sunday, December 7th, the Smithtown Varsity Cheerleading Team competed in the Pocono UCA Regional against 23 teams from the Northeast. The team finished in First Place by six points, naming them UCA Regional Champions! With this win, the Team is now eligible to compete in the UCA High School Nationals which will be held in Orlando Florida in February 2015. The Cheerleaders have since returned to practice in preparation for the Empire UCA Regional being held at Stony Brook University on Saturday, December 13th, and the LICCA Competition being held at Smithtown H.S. East on Sunday, December 14th.

Student Spotlight EVOLUTION

The inevitable journey of evolution guides us to enlightenment of hidden, or rather undiscovered, opportunities. Although this epidemic of unfamiliar findings brings us to the peak of the “ant hill,” anything that gets too tall will surely fall. When does simplicity regain the popularity and drive us back to the bottom of the hill? We cannot “undiscover” the new world, but we can rediscover the old one - and steer ourselves back to sanity, to chastity, before we crash and burn to the bottom with nothing but raw and blistered remains of what used to be victory. We are liable for the foreshadowing hostility that is forthcoming. Do we remain dependent on the illusion that is driving us to lunacy? Should we sew the blindfolds to our

own faces and trust the word of fraudulent command? In a world that emerged from ignorance and transpired to global sophistication, we sure are naive to think our achievements will not drive us to the ground. Times have changed, and it is impractical to think life will progress without discovery. But when these newfound portals take us to places that leave our original nature behind, we find ourselves deteriorating without even realizing it. There is nothing wrong with change; change is good. It is when we forget where we came from, where we started and where it all began, that we risk crashing and burning from achievement to collapse. It is when we strive too much for the future and forget about the past, or more importantly the

present, that we find ourselves falling into the unavoidable black hole of defeat. We must not avoid the fear inside of us that questions the meaning of life; otherwise we will fall into the intriguing fantasy that if we do not tend to our fears, they do not exist. They exist, and those fears must be the driving force to wisdom in this life. It is time to open our eyes and take responsibility for the drowning day that is ahead, unless we choose to prevent it. Time that we will never get back is ticking away, and we are letting it slip through our fingers. Choose simplicity, choose purity, and we will hopefully find the loophole to our now unchangeable future. It is up to us to be the new age of discovery - but not discovery of the future, discovery of the past.

Winning Wreaths Congratulations to Smithtown Historical Society’s 2014 Community Wreath Contest Winners! The first place winner for this year’s event was June Consalvo with her beautiful traditional

style wreath made up of a mixed bouquet of burgundy and gold fruits and flowers. Joan Harris was the second place winner in the contest with her unique white glitter pine wreath adorned with

teal blue under the sea ornaments. This year’s third place winner was Valerie Lindeman who assembled a traditional style vine and evergreen wreath with natural elements from the outdoors!

as well as helped with the initial setup for the turkeys, which were being cooked in upended, metal garbage cans. Following this planned activity, the scouts returned to “free time” to bike, hike, use the playground, play ball, etc. The turkeys were started at 1:45 p.m. and were going to take approximately two hours to cook; the scouts began working on the side dishes about an hour before the turkeys were going to be done - cranberry sauce, corn, broccoli, stuffing and mashed potatoes. Dinner and dessert were served around 5 p.m. and were a huge success. There was a great turnout of parents, some of whom stayed well into the night. There was an initial cleanup making sure that all food was put away, so as not to tempt any uninvited, four-legged guests during the night. The Scouts were then allowed some more free time during which many of them made their way to their tents due to a full day of being outdoors, exercising, having full bellies and the cold. The adults and leaders who stayed were reduced to huddling around the fire

like moths to a flame. The temperature bottomed out at 26 degrees at last check. 7 a.m. was rise and shine. Breakfast consisted of pancakes, pancakes and more pancakes, with bacon and eggs prepared by the Troop 343 Boy Scouts, while Assistant Scoutmaster Seeger made a “hungry man egg medley” for the adults who had camped overnight in tents. Cleanup and camp breakdown was next, followed by policing the campsite (leave no trace). People started heading home around 9 a.m., with some Scouts staying to hit the bike trails one last time. Said Scoutmaster Peter Crociata, “This year’s Cookout was another success. The boys and families cooked, ate, camped out, froze a little, but over overall had a blast. Thanks to Darius Bobelis for pulling this all together, to all the adults who came and those who slept out, and to the Senior Patrol and the Patrol Leaders for keeping things organized and moving. Can’t wait for next year to do this again!”

Sending Care Packages Bretton Woods’ students, faculty and staff recently collected numerous items to fill almost 20 care packages to send to U.S. soldiers overseas for the holiday season. Organized by Teachers Mrs. Phelan, Mrs. Czachor and Mrs.

Boy Scouts of Troop 343 (Hauppauge) and their adult volunteer leaders arrived at Cathedral Pines County Park to camp for the weekend a little after 9 a.m. and boys started the day setting up camp (getting tents up, roping off the cooking area, unpacking equipment, etc.) and getting ready for their family members who would be their guests at a turkey dinner that evening. This is the weekend that saw the initial “January In November” temps overnight. Following a bike safety recap (given by Assistant Scoutmaster Darius Bobelis), everyone’s bike condition, tire pressure and brakes was checked and the Scouts and adults were able to hit the trail. The first run was led by Mr. Bobelis followed by the scouts and adults with two adults taking up the rear. After the Scouts did the first trail together, they were allowed to hit the trails as they pleased (using the Buddy System) until 12 noon. The Scouts returned to the campsite where they cooked lunch (hamburgers, hot dogs and sauerkraut)
