Drive Through Hours: Monday - Friday: 9:00AM - 4:30PM The Drive Through Tax Collection is located at Town Hall, at 99 West Main Street, in the hamlet of Smithtown. The Brookhaven Bike Coop is wheeling in some joy this holiday season by giving away 40 refurbished bikes for those struggling to find the cash for gift giving. Just stop by the coop at 8 Flowerfield, Unit 18, St. James December 19th between 10am and 2pm to pick out your ride. The donated bikes have been lovingly restored by the coop’s volunteers under the supervision of skilled bike mechanics. Lawyer Greg Ferguson founded the nonprofit Brookhaven Bike Coop not only to promote a healthy activity, but to give those without the means a way to get to places like work, the grocery store and doctor’s appointments without relying on costly, sporadic or even unavailable public transportation. Bike owners can also use the space, its tools and spare parts to fix their own bikes. “It’s a place to sort of create a little bicycling community,” says Ferguson. Ferguson assembled his staff of volunteers by reaching out to members of his local bike club, the Suffolk Bike Riders Association. “I was surprised at how willing people were to donate bikes and parts and even teach us how to fix them,” he says. “It’s been a hugely positive experience.” One such find was Richard Dittmar, a bike mechanic and former bikeshop owner. Dittmar, who leads free repair classes at the coop, teaches everything from changing a flat to fixing gears. While he’s helped develop partnerships with Stony Brook University, Suffolk County and several bike shops, he says it’s been individuals who have donated most of the bikes. “People probably have unused bicycles in almost every garage,” says Dittmar. The coop has been turning that trash into treasure. An added benefit of donating old bikes, says volunteer and board

Wall Of Heroes In The Works Smithtown High School East students in Bill Coderre’s leadership class have been hard at work this school year to raise funds for the school’s new Wall of Heroes project. To raise money for their new wall, the class held a Field of Honor fundraiser. The students sold flags for $20 with a message dedicated in honor or in memory of a veteran, active service member, law enforcement, fire department and more. The Field of Honor was assembled for Veterans Day and was on display
on the school grounds throughout November. The field will be reassembled in late May for Memorial Day and Flag Day. The class is still accepting donations and information can be found on the school’s homepage. The Wall of Heroes will be on display outside of the Smithtown High School East Little Theater. The class has created and posted the application for veterans and active service members of Smithtown for position on the wall. A preliminary design has been created, and the
plan is to have the Wall of Heroes assembled for Memorial Day. The leadership class is also working with the American Legion James Ely Miller Post in Smithtown to place grave markers for veterans in the Smithtown Cemetery. They plan to map out grave locations for veterans so flags can be placed in the holders for Memorial Day. They would also like to create a map so the community can easily locate names and burial location of veterans in the Smithtown Cemetery.
Memorial Sloan Kettering Commack Opens New Food Pantry
The Food to Overcome Outcomes Disparities (FOOD) Program opened a new food pantry at MSK Commack on November 23, just in time for Thanksgiving. MSK Commack is the second pantry the FOOD Program started on Long Island — the first is at MSK Nassau, which opened in spring 2019 and has served more than 150 patients to date. The FOOD program, run by the Immigrant Health and Cancer Disparities Service (IHCD), expanded food pantries to MSK’s Long Island sites after conducting a needs assessment among patients that revealed a food
insecurity rate of almost 10 percent. That means that 1 in 10 of MSK Long Island patients expressed concern over where their next meal was coming from or were opting to use their funds to pay for medications and cancer treatmentrelated costs rather than food. MSK Commack brings the total number of food pantries operated by IHCD across NYC and Long Island — five located at MSK outpatient facilities and eight at NYC Health + Hospitals/ community partner sites. IHCD oversees, staffs, funds, and operates all the food pantries, including the partner sites that are
hosted by other H+H hospitals. The MSK Commack food pantry will be open every Monday between 9:00 am and 12:00 pm, providing healthy and nutritious food items directly to patients and families. No appointment is needed for MSK patients to participate. Caregivers and family members interested in picking up food on behalf of patients should reach out to Luke Paolantonio at 646-888-8046. Some items distributed at MSK Commack were generously donated by local Long Island charities.

SMITHTOWN HS EAST STUDENT ARTIST WINS CALENDAR CONTEST Smithtown High School East senior Nethmi Withanage has been named a winner in the Shanti Fund art competition. Each year, the Shanti Fund celebrates the life and values promoted by Mahatma Gandhi. Withanage’s artwork will be featured in the annual Shanti Fund peace calendar. The theme for 2021 focuses on encouraging peace and truth/media. Members of the Shanti Fund delivered a check to Withanage (center) in early December. Trotta Holds Winter Coat Drive with SMM Advertising and RSVP For several years, Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta has been working with Smithtown based SMM Advertising and Retired Volunteer Services Programs (RSVP) to conduct a winter coat drive to benefit the residents of Suffolk County who are in need of warm winter clothing. They are collecting gently used or new coats, jackets, hats, gloves, mittens, scarves and
new socks for infants, children, teens and adult men and women. “Due to COVID-19, many residents have lost their jobs or have had their hours reduced. As people prepare for the winter and clean out their closets or plan to give a new coat as a gift, it is important for all of us to help our fellow neighbors who need warm coats by contributing to this drive,” said Legislator
Rob Trotta. Donations of coats and other outerwear may be dropped off at Legislator Trotta’s district office, located 59 Landing Avenue, Suite 1, (Blue Door) in Smithtown, from 9am – 4pm, Monday through Friday. Boy Scout Troop 125 of Commack had a successful cleanup of 1.5 miles of the Long Island Greenbelt Trail centering on Lakeland County Park. This was part of their community service as well as for time needed for the Scouts’ conservation service hours needed for rank advancement. Upon arrival, for social distancing purposes, they were split into two groups, as there were about 30 scouts, parents, and Scout Leaders in attendance. Group #1 went north past the LIE to where the
Greenbelt turns off of Terry Lane to the LIPA ROW and Group #2 went south through the park and past Easton St. Over the three hours that they were on the trails, the Scouts collected approximately two truckloads of trash and debris (mostly discarded bottles and cans and papers) but the collection also included a bicycle, a tricycle, a car tire, television, and good number of car parts from the intersection at Express Drive N and Terry Lane. The Troop would like

Living only one block from Crab Meadow Beach and only a short distance from Stony Brook, the marshes and meadows have become a force of nature for this beach wanderer and observer of light. History of the Dreidel Dreidels are especially popular during the eightday Jewish festival of Chanukah. Even though they may seem like novelty items for children, dreidels have a rich and interesting history. In ancient times, Greek Syrians infiltrated areas where many practicing Jews resided. Over time, the Greek Syrians became more oppressive and tried to convert the Jewish people to their pagan beliefs. However, their efforts were not very
successful. As a result, the Greek Syrians established laws that outlawed ritual commandments and the study of the Torah. It is widely believed that Jewish people used dreidels to fool the Greeks into thinking they were just playing a game. Instead, rolls of the dreidel corresponded to numerical equivalents that could represent elements of the Jewish faith, according to My Jewish Learning. Others say the dreidel was a distraction. Children of Israel would learn the
Torah in outlying areas and forests. When Greek patrols were nearby, the children would hide their texts and take out dreidels instead, says Chabad.org. Today the dreidel is a token of the Chanukah miracle. In Israel, the letters upon the dreidel are Nun, Gimel, Hay, and Pay, which stand for the Hebrew equivalent of “a great miracle happened here.” Outside of israel, the last letter is Shin, which transforms the phrase into “a great miracle happened there.”

Two Smithtown High School East ThINK Science Research Program students, senior Dylan McCreesh and junior Aman Mistry, will have their award-winning essays published this fall in the Stony Brook University Young Investigators Review Journal. The 2020 Young Investigators Writing Competition challenged Long Island students with writing about “dilemmas regarding one of four controversies in science including experimental therapy, neural algorithms, environmental policy, or sustainable engineering.” Maria Zeitlin, Smithtown High School East ThINK
research coordinator, said, “I am so proud that two of the six students chosen from Long Island were East students. Reflection through writing is a tenant of the Science Research Program, and it was a terrific project we pursued into the summer months. Both Dylan and Aman are examples of dedicated student-scientists who have valuable perspectives on scientific topics relevant to society. In both papers, it is evident that most topics have diverse perspectives and an analysis must include multiple lenses.” Mistry’s paper, “Unraveling the Ethics Behind Experimental
Drugs,” is timely and relevant during this global pandemic. His thoughtful discussion of “compassionate use” of experimental therapies engaged both sides of what we have recently experienced with the issuance of such drugs. McCreesh’s essay, “Mitigating Automated Discrimination,” provides a mindful expository on the bias that may be present in algorithmic decision-making processes.
