A special senior citizen show was performed on the evening of December 2nd, and Smithtown High School East Principal Edwin Thompson even made a special appearance in the play. The Art League of Long Island invites artists from Nassau, Suffolk, Brooklyn, and Queens to submit entries to the upcoming juried competition “Motion in Art and Art in Motion” showing in the Jeanie Tengelsen Gallery March 28th through April 24th, 2016. Deadline to submit application is February 16th, 2016. The Art League invites artists to submit their visual interpretation of motion. An art work may incorporate actual motion; that is, the artwork itself moves in some way. Kinetic art is live movement that

displays actual motion when we view it. Or it may incorporate the illusion of, or implied movement. In a non-moving image, the artist captures the sense of implied movement through the attributes present in the image. Movement can be suggested visually in a variety of ways: through the use of diagonal, gestural, and directional lines; repetition; position and size of objects; the position or implied eyeline of a figure, a symbolic representation of movement. The Countdown Begins By: Jamie Lynn Ryan One week until Christmas, and I can honestly say that not only is my tree still standing in the middle of my living room undecorated, but I have barely scratched the surface of my gift shopping. And by barely, I mean I spent the majority of our annual Black Friday trek into the madness that is Roosevelt Field splurging on myself. To date, my list consists of a collection of names to buy for, but no corresponding “perfect” presents as of yet. I don’t know what it is this year. Thanksgiving came and went, and the transition into the official holiday season seemed to go well enough. But then… there it remained, stuck between my own haphazard shopping spree and

the massive process of wading through the unpacked boxes of decorations strewn about my apartment. Oh, and then the Christmas cards I decided to order arrived, to be added to the growing pile of things to be done. I suppose I should get them in the mail this week. Of course, I realize I’m not alone in this scenario. There are those who claim to have their holiday preparations completed by Thanksgiving weekend; but we all know this is highly unrealistic. Just one quick look around the neighborhood tells me that there are plenty of people in the same boat as me, with freshly cut trees strapped to the tops of their cars, and half-strung lights hanging from their rafters. And the stores. We all know

there are enough last minute shoppers to make Black Friday look like just your average day at the mall. Take the male shopper from last week’s column, throw in everyone else who – like me – just hasn’t had the wherewithal to get it together in the three weeks that have elapsed since the last piece of pumpkin pie was consumed and, there you have it. A society of procrastinators. It’s funny, since this is the so-called “most wonderful time of the year” that everyone looks forward to; yet all we hear is what a hassle it is to accomplish the long list of tasks associated with it. When do we stop and enjoy this magical season, exactly? January maybe? At this rate, I might be done with my Christmas shopping by then.

Bretton Woods Elementary School recently held a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for its newly completed Outdoor Classroom. Principal George Gagliardi welcomed honored guests Superintendent of Schools Patricia Sullivan-Kriss, Assistant Superintendent for Personnel and Administration Joe Tasman, Assistant Superintendent for Business and Operations James Stucchio, Board of Education Vice President Rob Scarito, Board of Education Trustee Stacey Weisberg, Middle School Principal Maryann Fletcher, Bretton Woods staff, past and present students, parents, PTA members, and our honored guest Past PTA President Wendy Cavanaugh – who’s vision began the quest to build an Outdoor Classroom for Bretton Woods – to mark this special occasion. “This is a joyous occasion, particularly for the many of you here who have been personally involved in conceptualizing, organizing and shaping the completion of this project,” remarked Principal Gagliardi. “This was a collaborative effort built through community resources and productive relationships with many community partners, as we look to promote the success of every student.” There are many benefits to an outdoor classroom. Research has shown that

students are happier and learn better when they spend time outdoors. When environmental education is integrated into the curriculum, student achievement increases in core academic areas including science, math and reading. Research additionally indicates schools that teach the core subjects using the environment as an integrating context, increase student engagement and enthusiasm for learning; and result in greater student pride and ownership in accomplishments. “Today, as we commemorate the addition of this inspiring and beautiful structure to Bretton Woods, we are honored to be celebrating among friends who shared our vision and who supported us on this journey to make this project come true,” stated Principal Gagliardi.

“This project required leadership, foresight, careful planning and persistence.” In addition to the District staff involved, Mr. Gagliardi recognized Contractor Al Iaboni for his donation of the “Bretton Woods” stone at the center of the Outdoor Classroom’s foundation; Christopher Marchese and the entire Hauppauge Educational Foundation for their continued support; and the Bretton Woods PTA, whose fundraising efforts and countless hours of dedication to raise the funds to see this project to fruition. “This vision was shared, and this vision came to realization because of the leadership, commitment and determination of our former PTA President Wendy Cavanagh. We thank her for everything she did to bring us here today,” said Principal Gagliardi.

Wood Park Primary School students are staying active with the help of the Smithtown Youth Bureau’s Safe Routes to School Program. This month, 120 students and many teachers participated in the 1st Annual Wood Park Turkey Challenge. Participants logged the number of minutes they were active both in and out of school with the hopes of being named the school’s most physically active

class, and with 21,947 minutes of movement in November, the winner was Mrs. Washousky’s kindergarten class. Overall, Wood Park students logged 89,562 minutes of activity (that’s 1,492 hours) in school at recess and physical education class, and out of school by walking, biking, attending after school activities, raking leaves, jumping on trampolines and playing outside with friends.

The Smithtown Historical Society helped kick off the season for the community with two festive family favorite events last weekend. First on Friday, December 4th, the Smithtown Historical Society’s hosted its annual Holiday Luncheon! This year marked the 54th year of this treasured holiday tradition. As always, it was a delightful afternoon with great food, gracious community relations, and generous support for the restoration of our historic buildings. New to this year’s event was a chocolate dessert contest in which contestants were asked to prepare and submit samples of their favorite chocolate recipes to be judge by a panel and also sold at the event’s boutique. Parent University The Smithtown Central School District, in conjunction with the Suffolk County Police Department, its PTAs, the Board of Education, Project Presence and many other community organizations, hosted a Parent University community forum on heroin and prescription drug education and awareness on December 1st. During the event, attendees heard information on the dangers

of prescription medication and heroin abuse, learned how to recognize the signs of drug abuse among teenagers, and learned the tools and actions parents can take to help their child. Following the forum, members of the SCPD offered training on Narcan, a prescription medication that can reverse an overdose by blocking the effects of opioids. SCPD’s Operation Medicine Cabinet was on hand to safely discard expired or

unwanted prescription medication. “Our goal is to increase education and awareness and build protective factors and preventative skills for families with a series of follow-up workshops,” said Jennifer Bradshaw, Smithtown Central School District assistant superintendent for instruction. “These Parent University forums align with our district goal to educate the whole student.”

On Tuesday, December 8th, community residents approved a capital project bond referendum totaling $41,422,515. The final vote was 1,331 yes, 499 no. The Board of Education and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Timothy Eagen extend their appreciation to all those who participated in this vote. “This bond is exactly what our facilities and grounds need to rebuild a foundation of pride in Kings Park,” said Dr. Eagen. “I am very thankful that the community has been so supportive of this project. Our infrastructure is in desperate need of updating.” The results of the vote demonstrate that community residents value the quality education Kings Park provides to its students and the importance of maintaining and renovating district facilities for the benefit of students, staff and the community.

With the approved project, all six buildings within the district would see building improvements, including roof replacements, bathroom renovations and door and hardware replacements, as well as asphalt and pavement upgrades as necessary. Plans also call for auditorium upgrades, gymnasium renovations and the creation of a multipurpose athletic field and accompanying concession stand/comfort station at Kings Park High School. Additional high school renovations include upgrading the library to provide for 21stcentury student research and learning needs, and resurfacing and upgrading the high school track. DeFord. “I would also like to thank the entire Facilities Committee and Dr. Eagen for the effort and time they dedicated to this project. Many community members worked collaboratively to assess the needs of our district, keeping in mind the needs of our students as well as watching the cost factor for all residents. It was wonderful to have the community support the work of the committee. As we start ‘rebuilding our Kings Park pride,’ we should all be reminded of this great community. As you may have heard before, ‘it takes a village to raise a child,’ and together, that is exactly what we are doing in our community. ” The district looks forward to the community’s future involvement as the plans and projects proposed in the approved bond become a reality.

A WITNESS TO HISTORY SUBMITTED BY: CATE DUNN, AGE 11, FAIRFIELD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Have you ever witnessed history? I have - my school was given a Historical Marker when it turned 90. My school, Fairfield Elementary, has been around for 90 years! Fairfield Elementary was originally called the Massapequa Avenue School. On October 27th, 2015, I witnessed history. I have learned many things about Fairfield Elementary, and the Massapequa Avenue School, that I didn’t know before. In 1925, the original Massapequa Avenue was completed and ready for students to attend. About 100 students attended daily classes, but throughout the years, many more students enrolled in the school. Did you know that my school was originally an apple orchard? Now, my school has changed a lot. Most grades in my school have about 100 people, while the old school had about 100 in total. I have learned the history of my school.

As well as my school being built in the 1920’s, I have also researched the Roaring 20’s, in particular, an invention. One thing invented in the 1920’s was bubblegum. In 1928, Walter Diemer invented bubblegum. Believe it or not, it was actually invented accidentally! Walter Diemer was playing around with new gum recipes in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the Fleer Chewing Gum Company factory. He ended up with the perfect batch. It was different, less sticky. Have you ever wondered why bubblegum is pink? It is pink because pink was the only color food dye that Walter Diemer had on hand. I love gum and I have it almost every day. Walter Diemer’s accident turned into a brilliant invention. In addition to learning about an invention in the 1920’s, we also learned about an event. The event I researched was the tri-

state tornado of 1925. The massive tornado struck the people of Missouri, Illinois and Indiana. The damage of the storm was estimated at 16.5 million dollars. This horrible disaster changed the lives of many. Many homes were destroyed. Almost 700 people were killed and 2,027 were injured. I have experienced Hurricane Sandy, another natural disaster. It changed the lives of many, including mine. The forecast was for showers and cooler temperatures, but what they didn’t know was a tornado was coming. The Roaring 20’s was a rewarding time. Although things were difficult sometimes, everything was worth it in the end. If my school was not built, I wouldn’t be going to Fairfield today. If gum was not invented, I would not be able to blow the delicious bubbles. The 1920’s was a time when many life-changing things happened.

DOWN ON THE FARM - Forest Brook Elementary School students in Meaghan Ricker’s and Suzanne Cipri’s class, along with Jennifer Kelly’s and Antoinette Sposato’s second grade classes recently had an opportunity to spend the day at the Suffolk County Farm in Yaphank, New York. The students enjoyed participating in the various educational centers that mimicked what life was like in the 1870’s. The students milked a pretend cow, met several farm animals, made tin luminaries, churned butter, handdipped candles and role-played in a General Store as part of their learning adventure.

New Partnership Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. (FREE) announced that it has entered into a new partnership with the nonfor-profit BroadHollow Theatre Company in East Islip. The new program will be a symbiotic relationship between the Theatre Company and FREE wherein the theater will receive valuable help with their day-to-day operations and the individuals supported by FREE will

gain valuable experience in the community. As part of this partnership, persons with disabilities will be offered the opportunity to explore and develop their full vocational potential. “We are so excited to enter into this partnership with the BroadHollow Theatre Company, who has long been a friend to FREE,” said Robert S. Budd, CEO for FREE. “We are pleased to be able to offer individuals

who participate in our theatre day program with opportunities to gain real world experience. It really shows them that anything is possible. I’m proud to be able to give them hope and help in making their dreams come true.” Participants in the program will have the opportunity to engage in local community interactions/relationships with merchants, and working on opportunities

that enhance their skills. Training will focus on helping FREE’s men and women enhance their job skills through a community based initiative and at the same time allow FREE to support a local theater. They took away all the towering trees. Ignored the little one that hardly Reached above their knees. To decorate houses and halls for X-mas The trees were meant. All over different cities they were sent. Proudly, with their needles raised, The wind their “good-bye” to the blue spruce traced. The grounds yawned where the trees had been. Only the unwanted little spruce was seen. Snow soon after began to fall; The little tree dreamt of being strong and tall. He knew that the trees that had left him Would shine and twinkle when the day got dim. On the day before X-mas, a father and son For a walk in the snow covered woods had gone. “Father, oh father, come and see. Here is a beautiful little X-mas tree!” The child exclaimed and stroked the tree. “This is just the right size for me!”
