At X-mas time from year to year I wonder will I next time still be here. In old times my husband used to decorate With a lot of love and often up quite late. He also mentioned the then-pending next year Saying “I will get more lights, if I am still here.” It is sad that by now he already is long gone. Much changed from how then celebration was done. We had angels big and small with bells of all size. Some never used – on their wings still the price. Keepsakes survived from grandma’s and mother’s home! Now, my grandson with glee in those treasures does roam. My enthusiasm to lavishly decorate my home is gone. Now to the younger generation, this is meant to be done. Getting older, one gets more involved to figure out What the true reason for the season is all about. Ongoing the tradition will be I will hang the rest on my young family’s tree Some of the items -- stars and lights -- I sort out. I will donate this year to a needy crowd. The ones that move me really deep I will display near the hearth and for myself do keep. Yes, X-mas seems to come faster and faster each year Let’s enjoy it and cherish what to us is dear.

My Grownup Christmas List By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

When I was little, all I ever wanted for Christmas was a puppy. Every single year, the same thing. When that didn’t happen, I switched to a trip to Disney World to “meet Mickey & Minnie Mouse.” Lofty goals for a child, to be sure… but nothing a visit to a department store Santa, list of wishes in hand, couldn’t fix. As I grew older, there were the latest Barbie dolls, electronic gadgets and toys to be had – the “fun” stuff. I remember that tinge of disappointment when I would spy shirt boxes wrapped under the tree, knowing it likely meant clothing. Yawn. How funny the way our perceptions change as we age.

Eventually, the clothes and accessories and latest trends were more appreciated, complemented with stocking stuffers of CDs and DVDs and maybe even a pair of tickets to an upcoming concert or ballgame. Then came the gift card phase, those years of wanting to head out on my own post-holiday shopping spree in lieu of putting any real thought into a Christmas wish list. And so it remains, for the most part, to this day. Aside from a few token “musthave” toy crazes that erupt each holiday season, even the children of today seem perfectly content to collect money and gift cards from their relatives and either squirrel it away or splurge on

their own special selection. Gone is the element of surprise, of wonderment, of eager anticipation of what might appear under the tree on Christmas morning. And so, too, is some of the innocence, the childish delight. How nice it would be to recapture an element of that, especially in this day and age. This Christmas, perhaps the focus should be not on what’s under the tree, but rather those around it… the true reason for the season, after all. This year, there is nothing in particular I want, other than to spend it with my loved ones and cherish the moments and the memories to be made. That’s my list, short and sweet.

Each of the children and their siblings had an opportunity to receive a gift, and thanks to Mr.

Krantz and his unending generosity, each family went home with a car-full of goodies, to bring them some extra cheer during the holiday season. This year marked the seventh year that this beautiful and special event is held. The children, who had nonstop smiles on their faces, and their families not only enjoyed themselves, but were able to connect with other Angela’s House families that they otherwise had never met. For a few hours, the stresses of caring for a medically fragile child were backseat to creating lasting memories and enjoying the holiday season.

This year, students were asked to donate one can of healthy food for every lap that they completed on the track for the walking/ jogging event. MAKING WISHES COME TRUE - Students from Mt. Pleasant Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District recently joined together to raise money for the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Through a community outreach project, the students collected $270 to donate to the organization to help make a special child’s wish come true. Mt. Fourth-graders at St. James Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District had a special visit from storyteller/author Heather Forest on November 30th. Ms. Forest has authored many books, such as “Wonder Tales from Around the World,” “Wisdom Tales from Around the World” and “Stone Soup,” taking old folktales and rewriting

them in her own words. Using music to help tell stories, Ms. Forest encouraged audience participation as she relayed fables and folktales such as “The Little Red Hen” and “A Big Quiet House.” Ms. Forest spoke to the students about using their imagination to tell a story. She gave examples of how they could retell a familiar story using their

Art of Storytelling imagination to create a completely new version. Following the assembly, Ms. Forest visited with fourth-graders in their classroom to provide individual instruction on the art of storytelling. She discussed the basic components of telling/ writing a story and worked with the students to develop their writing and listening skills.

New Experience at Sweetbriar Sweetbriar Nature Center in Smithtown announces the grand opening of a new sensory experience. Visiting families can climb up the staircase of our nature center and take in the beauty and diversity of our simulated rain forest as they have been able to do for many years. However, now, when they pass through the tropical rain forest, they can bring their children into a new world, the world of a local woodland. Through interactive, sensory activities, children can experience the sights, sounds, smells, and feels of a forest. Children can crawl through the underground

world beneath the forest floor, look though a small window to view the forest floor above and peak at our resident box turtles in their enclosure. When they continue their woodland adventure children can use a computer and try to match sounds with the things in nature that made them They can sniff containers with forest smells and try to decide what caused these aromas). There is a touch table so visitors can feel the different textures of things in the forest. While they are doing all of this, they can take in the amazing artistry of the room as they play I Spy to explore the forest and field

murals around the room. As people exit the exhibit, they can follow our local song birds that are painted on the ceiling as they migrate from our local woodland back to the rain forest. This is a self-guided exhibit, but staff and volunteers available to assist visitors if they need assistance. The experience is open from Monday, December 26th onward into 2017, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily at the Sweetbriar Nature Center, 62 Eckernkamp Drive in Smithtown. It is open to families with children of all ages; $2/ person.

Fourth-graders in the Dogwood Wellness Club at Dogwood Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District recently created a kindness board to display in the school’s main hallway. The club was inspired

by the idea to “throw kindness around like confetti.” Hoping to spread positivity and foster a sense of belonging, students have handwritten kind and inspirational messages on Post-It notes for their peers to read as they walk

and participation in this important process.” Jankeloff previously served as director of Pupil Personnel Services for the West Hempstead Union Free School District, and prior to that was a Special Education coordinator for Long Beach School District. Stuffed Animal Sleepover It was a party to remember for the secondgraders in Seth Paster’s second-grade class at Mills Pond Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District. On December 1st, the class hosted a stuffed animal sleepover. The students each brought

in their favorite stuffed animals and wrote descriptive pieces about them. In the afternoon before they left school for the day, they tucked in their animals for the sleepover. When they arrived at school the next morning, the second-graders were

shocked to discover that the animals had a party. Stuffed animals were reading books and playing games on the carpet. One of them had even phoned in an order of pizza. The class then wrote stories about what had really happened in their classroom that night.

Career Day a Success Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta attended Commack Middle School’s Career Day and was joined by other professionals such as FBI agents, members of the armed services, accountants, lawyers,

doctors, journalists, educators, social workers, policemen and firefighters. They all met with the students to share information about their careers, to answer questions about their jobs and to address what

training or education was required for their field of work. “I was happy to participate and to talk with the students about local government and the status of the County,” said Legislator Trotta.

EDUCATIONAL SUPPORT - Smithtown High School East and Smithtown High School West were both awarded a check for $5,000 from the Staples Corporation as part of their program to give back to local school districts. Eagle Scout is the highest rank any Boy Scout can attain, and it is not done so

with easy, the Scout must complete a number of merit badges and complete a community service project. Leslie Kennedy had the opportunity to congratulate Skyler for his achievements this Sunday. To fulfill the community service portion of his Eagle Scout project Skyler, with a heart for St. Thomas More Roman Catholic Church, decided to revitalize the

Church grounds for all the parishioners to enjoy. Skyler improved upon the prayer garden on the church property by removing the existing stonework and placing a new stone wall. He also planted new flowers and built a new stone walkway leading to the prayer garden.

Students in Rob Springer’s second-grade art class at Accompsett Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District recently collaborated on the Monster Project with students at Smithtown High School West in Steve Halem’s Advanced Placements art classes. The Monster Project is the undertaking of a passionate collection of artists who share a

common goal: to help children recognize the power of their own imaginations and to encourage them to pursue their creative potential. Mr. Springer’s studentartists worked on their monsters in the spring 2016. When the students finished their creations, the work was then presented to Mr. Halem’s students. Each work was imaginatively transformed into an adaptation taken

from the original piece. After the second-graders drew their monsters, the high school students brought them to life in their own artistic style. The Smithtown High School West students then delivered the new interpretations back to the elementary students and spent time demonstrating new art techniques within their original creative context.

BAKING FOR A CAUSE - Hauppauge Middle School’s Chef’s Club students recently baked and donated more than seven dozen cookies for the Smithtown Historical Society’s annual “Heritage Country Christmas” event. The Chef’s Club members meet every week to cook and bake a variety of foods as well as to have an opportunity to enjoy the “fruits of their labors.” The Middle School hosts fall and spring sessions of the Chef’s Club, and students are selected via a lottery system since it is such a popular offering.

(NAPSI)—A total of 68 percent of U.S. households own a pet, according to the American Pet Products Association (APPA), with 56.7 million owning a dog and 45.3 million owning a cat. If your home is among them, you may care to heed these seven hints to keep your pet healthy from the experts at the American Veterinary Medical Association: 1. Maintain your pet at a healthy weight; 2. Exercise your pet; 3. Feed a balanced, nutritious diet; 4. Visit the veterinarian at least once a year to make sure your pet is healthy and to help detect problems earlier; 5. Vaccinate your pet against potentially deadly diseases such as distemper, parvo, panleukopenia and rabies; 6. Spay/neuter your dog or cat;

7. Keep your pet free of ticks and fleas. Fleas can be responsible for skin conditions such as flea allergy dermatitis in dogs and miliary dermatitis in cats. Fleas also transmit other parasites including tapeworms. A flea infestation is something no pet owner ever wants to face—especially as nearly half of dogs and 62 percent of cats sleep in their owner’s bed, according to the APPA. The culmination of all this holiday cheer was the arrival of Santa Clause and Mrs. Clause, who were escorted by the Nesconset Fire Department. Santa came to visit all the boys and girls in Nesconset who have behaved this year.

This Sunday Suffolk County Legislator Leslie Kennedy celebrated the season with 9/11 Responders and fellow Long Islanders at the 6th Annual Holiday Tree Lighting at the 9/11 Responders Remembered Park in Nesconset. The 9/11 Responders Remembered Park honors the responders who arrived at Ground Zero following the events of September 11th and who continue to

die today as a result of their efforts. Nearly 600 names have been added to the wall since its installation and each year a ceremony is held to remember those who have died. The park is supported by the 9/11 Responders Remembered Organization. John Feal of the FealGood Foundation is a major advocate of the park and has lobbied in Washington and has long since been a voice

for countless responders that have suffered as a result of working and assisting in the aftermath of the attacks. The 9/11 Responders Remembered Organization has worked closely with Legislator Kennedy, both on this project and others, and she has taken great interest in the issues, initiatives and community events organized by the advocacy group.
