Having a bit of extra time this morning, I had the luxury of spending a lot of time reading the headlines in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post. After reading all three, it took a few moments to sink in, but then the reality hit me… each of the headlines had their own slant on the news. PSEG Long Island is closely monitoring and ready for the season’s first forecast of snow, sleet and rain expected to hit the service area Thursday. Options Mental Health Residential Programs provide supportive housing opportunities for Long Island residents recovering from serious mental illness under the auspices of the New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH).

Options was formed in 1982 to respond to the need for supportive housing for people with serious mental illness. The Mental Health Residential Program grew rapidly, and in 1994 Options introduced case management services to Long Islanders living with HIV/AIDS. Soon after, a housing program for this population was started as well. More recently, Options has partnered with Long Island Health Homes to offer care coordination services to high need Medicaid users with chronic illnesses through the Access to Care Program. As of today, Options serves more than 1,800 adults and children annually through its programs and manages over 180 scattered housing sites across Nassau and Suffolk counties!
Long Island has more AIDS cases than any other suburban community in the U.S. Options operates more than 50 scattered units of supportive housing for people living with HIV/ AIDS and provides additional Ryan White funded case management services for this vulnerable population. Affordable housing linked to services – provides low-income, disabled and formerly homeless people with the help they need to stay housed and live more independent, healthy and fulfilling lives.

STEM Lessons Score Big The “Let’s Go Yankees” cheers could be heard even outside the building as Mt. Pleasant Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District welcomed New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone on November 27th. Boone visited the school as a guest judge as part of the Hess Corporation’s STEM Curriculum Guide along with Hess general manager Justin Mayer. Fifth-grade students in Jeff Faragasso’s class, who have been working with the Hess STEM program for a few years, were challenged to design their own obstacle courses as part of the program.
Using Hess’ 2018 RV with ATV and motorcycle (which comes equipped with the STEM guide) – and being as creative with their designs as they wanted – the students showed off the obstacle courses and tested velocity, speed and kinetic energy by racing the vehicles down the ramps in the gymnasium. Boone selected the team with the most creative design and the most challenging design and served as the timekeeper as the students raced all the cars down the most challenging course. “Seeing the creativity, teamwork, intelligence and the time
they have put into these courses has been really fun,” Boone said. The Hess STEM program combines the elements of science, technology, math and engineering into handson classroom activities. Hess STEM engages grade school students in practical experiences that demonstrate how concepts apply in the real world. Hess’ general manager worked with the students on the activities within the 2018 curriculum guide that explore practical transportation issues, such as fuel efficiency, potential and kinetic energy for producing motion, and motorsports.

When to Abandon the “Thinking” Mind One cannot accomplish anything of great significance with the thinking mind in the way. As I sit down to write this week’s column, I notice that I am in my head, which will not do, so I turn my attention to Miles Davis’ Blue is Green song playing on my phone. The soothing rhythmic sound of jazz takes me out of my thinking mind and places my energy back to that intangible place where creativity is born. It’s between the dream-state consciousness and waking consciousness, where anything seems possible, and we do not question the validity of our ideas. While it’s true that our brain is the machine that powers and processes the application of practical knowledge, those magic “aha” moments that hit us seemingly out of nowhere and have the supernatural ability to transform our lives, make themselves known when we are doing just about anything other than “thinking.” If you’ve experienced this even once in your life, you surely know what I mean.
A 2016 article in The Atlantic, titled, “The Trippy State Between Wakefulness and Sleep” states, “There is a brief time, between waking and sleep, when reality begins to warp. Rigid conscious thought starts to dissolve into the gently lapping waves of early stage dreaming, and the world becomes a little more hallucinatory; your thoughts a little more untethered.” It’s that untethered state, when we forget about time and space, and who we are supposed to be, that we do not judge our ideas or our creative impulses. It’s similar to a young child’s state of consciousness, before they learn to be self-conscious and selfcritical. A January 2018 Wall Street Journal article titled, “For Babies, Life May Be A Trip,” states, “Fascinating new neuroscience research suggests that when adults dream or have psychedelic experiences, their brains are functioning more like children’s brains. It appears that the experience of babies and young children is more like dreaming
or tripping than like our usual grown-up consciousness.” She goes on to say, “Like most adults, I spend most of my waking hours thinking about getting things done. Scientists have discovered that when we experience the world in this way, the brain sends out signals along the established, stable, efficient networks that we develop as adults.” The part of the brain where adults tend to spend most of their waking hours will help keep you safe, get to work on time, and remember to pick up the dry cleaning, but it’s not your friend when it comes to living outside the box or taking creative risks. In order to experience life in a more dynamic, passionate and creative way, we need to develop strategies for breaking us out of the thinking, critical mind so that we are able to tap into the higher collective consciousness from where all creativity and inspired ideas flow forth. Sini will announce several enhancements to the Office’s newly-created Conviction Integrity Bureau, which aims to achieve and ensure justice by investigating claims of innocence, remedying identified wrongful convictions, and providing proactive support and recommendations to the Office to prevent wrongful convictions.
The enhancements include the appointment of an Independent Review Panel (“IRP”), composed of leading members of the legal community, to advise the CIB and review the Office’s investigations of wrongful conviction claims. District Attorney Sini will also announce the establishment of a dedicated intake line, email address and web page for the Bureau to
facilitate the reporting and investigation of wrongful conviction claims. The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office is located at 725 Veterans Memorial Highway, Building #77. William J. Lindsay County Complex, Hauppauge, NY 11787. This will take place on Thursday, November 15, 2018 at 12 p.m.

New Safety Legislation Introductory Resolution 2015, A Local Law Imposing A Duty To Report Criminal Conduct At Water Parks And Amusement Parks, sponsored by Legislator Susan A. Berland (D-Dix Hills) will be considered by the full Suffolk County Legislature at the December 4, 2018 General Meeting. This resolution requires amusement parks and water parks operating in Suffolk County to immediately contact an appropriate law enforcement agency when a criminal act, including sex offenses, occurs on their property. This resolution was introduced in response to a troubling incident
that occurred at a popular water park in Suffolk County, when several girls reported being groped by a group of men in the water park’s wave pool. The water park employees were advised of the incident but failed to notify local law enforcement agencies of the incident and failed to obtain identifying information from the alleged perpetrators before they escorted them from the park. “The safety of our public, and especially that of our children, is of utmost importance,” said Legislator Susan A. Berland. “We owe it to our children to protect them from harm, especially
when they are simply spending the day having fun. The operators of water and amusement parks need to notify the appropriate authorities when they are told of an alleged criminal act.
