“THE NUTCRACKER” RETURNS - New York Dance Theatre will present its 38th season of “The Nutcracker” at Hofstra University’s John Cranford Adams Playhouse, on Saturday, December 14 and Sunday, December 15 with performances each day at noon and 5 p.m. York City Ballet return to perform as the Sugarplum Fairy and her Cavalier. Brittany Pollack, a New York City Ballet soloist, made her Broadway debut as “Louise” in the 2018 revival of Carousel. Mr. Ulbricht, a principal dancer at New York City Ballet, has taught students at the Ohman School of Ballet, a division of New York Dance Theatre, as a master class guest teacher and in his role as artistic director of the elite New York State Summer School of the Arts (NYSSA) ballet program in Saratoga Springs. With the elegant
Christmas Party Scene, the drama of the magical growing Christmas Tree, the Battle of the Toy Soldiers and Giant Mice, the live Snow Storm, and the brilliant dancing in the Land of the Sweets, “The Nutcracker” appeals to all ages. New York Dance Theatre will present its 38th season of “The Nutcracker” at Hofstra University’s John Cranford Adams Playhouse, on Saturday, December 14 and Sunday, December 15 with performances each day at noon and 5 p.m. NYDT’s production is the largest Nutcracker on Long Island and the only one performed in the tradition of New York City Ballet’s Lincoln Center version. This year’s production will be the first without New York Dance Theatre founder and former New York City Ballet soloist Frank Ohman, who passed in July 2019 at age 80. Through the years, Frank Ohman created original dances and scenes which have been incorporated into the ballet and set his production apart from others on Long Island. As a former student and soloist under George Balanchine he was one of a select few authorized to use the original pas de deux choreography of his mentor, which will continue to distinguish this production. Mr. Ohman’s traditional role of the grandfather in the party scene that opens the ballet will be left vacant this season in his honor. Smithtown’s Business Olympics Celebrates 25 Years
This year marked the 25th anniversary of Smithtown Central School District’s Business Olympics competition, sponsored by the School of Business in the Career & Technical Education in cooperation with the Smithtown Industry Advisory Board. The event, held this year at Smithtown High School West on Nov. 21, was themed “Go Green – Choose Clean.” The teams’ challenge was to create an environmentally conscious
product or service. They developed a promotional and marketing campaign for their product or service. There were 50 teams, with more than 200 students from Smithtown High School East and West participating who were focused on developing a successful mobile business. Smithtown Industry Advisory Board members, district administrators and employees, local companies and organizations participated in the event and judged the
students on their overall presentation. All student teams were required to have a Google Slide presentation, a commercial for their product/service, promotional materials and a marketing plan for their product/service. The district congratulates this year’s winning team from Smithtown High School West – Team Clean Kicks: Luke Muratore, Will Alptekin and Mark Kyranakis.

EAST’S HABITAT CLUB BUILDING IN BAY SHORE - The Habitat for Humanity Club of Smithtown High School East volunteered on a student build in Bay Shore on Nov. 22. The members actively participate in many fundraising projects/events throughout the year. The proceeds are donated to the Habitat for Humanity Chapter of Suffolk. On this build, members were involved with cement work and insulating the crawl space of the future home. In the past, they have participated with landscaping, painting, tile and woodwork, sheetrock, siding and more. The next scheduled build is on May 22. STORM WATER SUPERHEROES - Students in Kelly Collett’s class at St. James Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District participated in Storm Water Superheroes on Nov. 26. Scientists from Cornell Cooperative Extension came to the school to teach the second graders how they can help the local bays and waterways. Two Commack High School mathematics teachers, Christina Pawlowski and Derek Pope, are state-level finalists for the 2019 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) for grades 7-12. Only three finalists are chosen statewide. The award is one of the most prestigious honors in the nation for teachers, recognizing exemplary teaching and leadership in science and mathematics education. “Having these two creative, innovative, and dedicated educators chosen as national finalists is a validation of the excellence of our teaching staff,” stated Superintendent Dr. Donald James. “Our goal is prepare students for the future, and Christina and Derek engage our students with innovative lessons so students can easily grasp difficult concepts. Stay Smart This Holiday Season ‘Tis the season of holiday parties and special events. The festive atmosphere and free food and drinks can make it very tempting to forsake your healthy eating plan! Try these tips to celebrate the season without overdoing it. • Keep portions in check. Put less on your plate and pass on that second helping. Split appetizers, entrees and desserts with others. Use a smaller plate when possible so a small serving will look like more.
• Bring a dish. If the event is a potluck (or even if not), offer to contribute a lighter option. That way, you’ll have at least one healthy choice. • Go easy. Avoid loading up on foods that are fried, buttered or have a lot of cheese or cream. Look for fruit, veggies and dip, whole grains and baked or grilled items. • Be prepared. Have a healthy, high-protein, high-fiber meal or snack before you go to the event.
If you’re not hungry it will be easier to avoid overeating. • Go slow if you drink alcohol. Drinking plenty of water between drinks will quench your thirst and fill you up so you’ll be less likely to overindulge. • Treat yourself. Try bite-sized tastes or split portions of desserts, candy and other treats. Let yourself enjoy some of the indulgences of the season without overdoing it. • Balance is the key.

In 1992, John Theissen held a toy drive during the holiday season to benefit children in local hospitals. During this first drive, he collected over 800 new toys in just 2 weeks! That was
the beginning of what has become the year round organization, John Theissen Children’s Foundation. Since 1992, this organization has collected over 1 million new toys and have donated them to sick and underpriviledged children in over 180 hospitals and child-care facilities. However, this Foundation does more than just collect and distribute toys. They also provide hospitals and child-care facilities with therapeutic and recreational equipment, support families with financial assistance to defray medical expenses, fulfill patient’s wishlists throughout the year (for those 18 years of age

PORT JEFFERSON STATION, N.Y. (December 2, 2019) – New York Cancer & Blood Specialists (NYCBS) is proud to announce Amishi Desai MD, to its team. Dr. Desai is board-certified in hematology-oncology, as well as internal medicine. As such, she covers a full scope of services, while also maintaining a particular interest in lung cancer. In addition, she has done extensive research in venous thromboembolic disease and the use of novel oral anticoagulants. Dr. Desai will be working at 72 East Main Street in Babylon and 1500 Route 112, Building #4 in Port Jefferson Station. Dr. Desai earned her Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery degree from JK Medical College and Research Center. She then completed her residency and fellowship at WinthropUniversity Hospital. Here she was awarded a First Prize in a research trial involving Rivaroxaban (Xarelto) and Conventional
Anticoagulants in the use of newly diagnosed venous thromboembolism. Dr. Desai is fluent in Hindi and enjoys practicing Indian classical dance, Bharatanatyam. She adores spending time with her family and became inspired to pursue a career in medicine when a relative was stricken with cancer. “At first it made me angry, frustrated and sad. It had, however, further piqued my interest in finding a cure for cancer,” said Dr. Desai.
As a culminating activity to their lessons on Native American history, the first grade classes at Dogwood Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District participated in handson learning centers on Nov. 26. Gathered by the teepee and around the deerskin rug, the students learned about some of the Native American traditions and the roles of
the different members of the family. Students touched antlers, turtle shells and feathers as they gathered in a circle for storytelling time. On display around them were the Native American habitat posters they created and dreamcatchers that hung from the ceiling. Wearing their Native American shirts that featured different symbols, one classroom station also created

This wall is here because of our veterans who have faithfully served our country to protect our freedoms and liberty.” The project began as a part of a social studies leadership class assignment, under the direction of High School West social studies teacher Joan Havranek. “Every year I have my leadership students
work on a final project that involves civil service,” she said. “When we began, we did not know what to expect. Now, here we are honoring 70 brave men and women. We truly do thank all of you for your service. We cannot say thank you enough.” The formal ribbon-cutting was done by the students who started the project last year and have since graduated. Now, the Wall of Heroes boasts 70 plaques honoring veterans from all branches of the U.S. Armed Forces. Plaques of each of the “heroes” are mounted along the walls, featuring the name, branch of service and year of graduation.
