St. Johnland Nursing Center has received a generous grant from The Townwide Fund of Huntington to purchase a kiosk and subscribe to the new Linked Senior service. Linked Senior is a web-based program that uses touchscreen kiosks and personal Linked Senior tablets to provide access to entertainment, education, spiritual and intellectual content. It is similar to an iPad but it is senior-friendly. It provides virtually limitless content that can be accessed easily with no typing or Google searches needed. If so, Eugene Endonino, Transportation Supervisor at the Smithtown Senior Citizen Department wants to hear from you! According to Eugene, “We provide a full range of transportation services Monday through Friday. Our drivers take residents to a variety of venues including Supermarkets, The Smith Haven Mall, the AMF Bowl, Senior Center Club Events, the Library, Beauty Salons, Doctor Offices, Hospitals, Nursing Homes and more. However, our buses are restricted to travel within the borders of Smithtown Township. ” Laura Greif, Program Director at the Smithtown Senior Citizen Department explains “Our mission is to ensure that our seniors who do not drive maintain their independence and get out into the community on a regular basis. Our transportation services enable this to happen.” The Smithtown Senior Citizen Department has a fleet of eight 18-passenger

buses - all handicap accessible - four of which run on clean energy, compressed natural gas. The department employs eight professional CDL certified drivers who provide curb to curb service for a fee of $1 ($2 per round trip). It is

Making The Tough Choices

Throughout my whole life, my parents have pushed me to try for the most elite colleges. In their minds, to be successful, you need to study at the top level. They are concerned mainly with the prestige level of my prospective school. Surely, prestige is not the deciding factor in what I hope will be a very successful career. Perhaps a less recognized school will afford me the same kind of education, in an environment where I will thrive. The vast majority of prestigious schools maintain a focus on graduate education. This

means less one-on-one learning with a professor. If I choose to attend a smaller school, I may have the opportunity to learn more efficiently. On the other hand, the brand recognition associated with my parents’ choices will undoubtably carry weight, and take me far in life. With just a few days until I hear back from colleges with an acceptance or denial, it is time to make a decision. Do I go to a school that will make me happy? Do I go to a school that will make my parents happy? It is undoubtably the biggest decision I will have had to make in my seventeen years of life.

I cannot infer how happy I will be at a college. I don’t even know what I want to do with my life yet. As of right now, I want to become a journalist, but last month I wanted to be a chef! I don’t know how my life will play out, so there are no guarantees. Surely, a degree is nothing; it is what you do in those four years and beyond that count. There is no stress for me anymore, as I am done with the application process. The ball is in their court now. I can only hope I choose the school that is right for me.

This past August 5th, 2013, The Ronald McDonald House of Long Island opened a Family Room at Stony Brook Children’s Hospital, a family-friendly respite area located on the 11th floor of the hospital. As Suffolk County’s only children’s hospital, Stony Brook Children’s serves a population of 1.5 million. The room will provide support for thousands of families of children who are hospitalized each year at Stony Brook Children’s, helping to alleviate their anxiety of having a child in the hospital by keeping them close to their child’s bedside. This new facility represents the beginning of a tremendous partnership between the Ronald McDonald House and Stony Brook Children’s Hospital. They hope to open a new Ronald McDonald House in Stony Brook in 3-5 years. The Family Room offers a fully stocked kitchenette, a dining area, a lounge area with a flat-screen television, laptops with internet access, private showers, and lockers, laundry facilities and a transportation program. A van will transport families to airports, doctors’ appointments and drug stores, and will run

errands for the family. It is run by over 40 volunteers, from 9 am to 9 pm seven days a week with services provided at no cost to families of children being cared for at the hospital. The Ronald McDonald House of Long Island is the 100th House of over 325 Ronald McDonald programs worldwide. Located in New Hyde Park, NY, the House accommodates families in a warm and supportive environment for over 27 years. RMH-LI has been a home away from home for over 18,000 families in the United States and more than 80 countries around the world who are dealing with the pain of having a child undergoing medical treatment at nearby hospitals. Thursday, December 5th, The Rotary Club of Smithtown-Sunrise guest speaker was David Rosner, Director of Development, the Ronald McDonald House of Long Island located at 267-07 76th Avenue in New Hyde Park. Discussed in today’s talking points were the mission of Ronald McDonald House of Long Island which is to give comfort and shelter to families experiencing the pain of having a sick child in local hospital facilities. A “home away from home”, the House provides the parents and siblings of these children with a temporary haven in a secure and comfortable environment among other families sharing a similar burden. Guiding in the mission are the core values of focusing on the critical needs of children… Celebrating the diversity of the programs they offer and the staff, volunteers and donors who make them possible... Staying true to their heritage of responsible stewardship... and operating with accountability and transparency. The Ronald McDonald House helps alleviate many of the everyday mental, emotional and financial stressors that families face while their child is in the hospital. There were the motion figurines in the windows, the collectible Snowbabies village… all signs that the holiday season had officially arrived. I hope that this year, this apartment, this Christmas tree, will all be the beginning of my own holiday traditions, to be built upon with each passing year. Little by little, one ornament at a time, bringing the magic of Christmas home.

Just last week, I purchased my very first Christmas tree, complete with twinkling white lights, red ornaments and glittery accents. It’s not Rockefeller Center spectacular, but it’s mine, in all its 6 ½ foot “slim” glory – because, let’s face it, once you actually furnish an apartment, you realize there’s not a whole lot of room leftover for anything else! And so it begins, the decorating, that tedious task we all dread yet somehow become fully engrossed in

the minute the plates are cleared from Thanksgiving dinner. It’s a slow process, but a fun one nonetheless. And for me, this will be my first holiday accumulating Christmas novelties to display in my own cozy living quarters. There’s something about holiday decorations that immediately brighten up any room, or street, or neighborhood… the magic of the season personified.
