Smithtown Central School District officials joined St. James Elementary School officials, faculty members, students and community members at the school’s playground for a dedication ceremony to unveil a beautiful bench in memory of a special young lady. Grace McDonnell was one of the 20 students and 26 victims overall who lost their lives during the Sandy Hook Elementary School shootings in Newtown, CT in December of 2012. Grace’s grandmother, Sheila Zapf, was a longtime Academic Intervention Services tutor at St. James ES. The school administration and faculty wanted to show support for their dear friend and colleague who tragically lost her granddaughter. Together, with the school’s
Site-Based Team, and with the artistic help of a former district administrator, they presented a memorial that embodies many of the things that brought joy to Grace’s life. The memorial bench was unveiled earlier this fall. Linda Solby, a former Smithtown High School assistant principal, created a beautiful bench with a colorful mosaic tile seat. The bench depicts images of sailboats, a beach and a lighthouse, many of the things that Grace enjoyed. Sheila Zapf and her husband Fred were on hand for the unveiling and dedication of the bench, which sits in the heart of the St. James ES playground. A loving tribute and constant reminder of how special and precious life is – most especially, the lives of our children. “Grace was beautiful,
kind and loving. She just sparkled… She was an artist and saw beauty in everything and was fortunate to have found her passion [for painting] early in life,” said Sheila Zapf, who noted that when President Obama visited Newtown following the tragedy, he was presented with one of Grace’s paintings, which now hangs in his private study near the Oval Office. Zapf also spoke about Grace’s love for adventure, her infectious laugh and great sense of humor. She also thanked the St. James community for their loving gift. “Grace had a zest for life, and her favorite expression was ‘soak it up,’” she said. “So as we leave here today, we should all just soak it up and live in peace, with love and grace.”

Help brighten the holidays for those in need in our community and for young Mather patients by donating to the annual Warm Wishes Drive at the Hospital. Mather is accepting donations of NEW mittens, gloves, hats and scarves for distribution in our community. Donations will serve as decorations on the Hospital’s holiday tree in the main entrance before being distributed to those in need through Infant Jesus RC Church, Long Island Cares and the Salvation Army. The hospital will also collect NEW plush toys for distribution to pediatric patients in Mather’s Ambulatory Surgery Center and Emergency Department. All donations may be dropped off in the main lobby beginning Monday, December 8th. The deadline for hats, gloves and scarves is Friday, December 19th, and for plush toys is December 30th.

I’m not a fan of shopping lists. My approach is more along the lines of wander around select stores for hours, aimlessly scanning the departments for inspiration for that “perfect,” thoughtful gift. The funniest part is, it works. At the beginning of the Christmas season, I pretty much compile a list of people I need to buy for, followed by any suggestions or subtle ST. The rest is left up to that aforementioned “inspiration.” While my system may not be the most efficient in terms of time, it ensures that I don’t miss anything in my survey of stores. I refuse to simply buy something just for the sake of crossing off a gift on the checklist. May as well just re-gift then, no? It’s cheaper. Speaking of price, it seems inevitable – for me, at least – that the second I find exactly what I’m looking for, it shows up somewhere else for less. Considerably less. Like, along the lines of
25% off, free shipping and, oh, let’s throw in something free along with it, less. The kind of deal that you should really take advantage of, while returning your previous so-called “bargain” for a full refund. But, as is the case with most things done during the rush of the holiday season, we buy on impulse, we occasionally pay too much in the process – and we don’t care all that much, because, hey, Christmas comes but once a year, right? Right. Just remember that when the credit card bills come due in January.

Accompsett Middle School in Smithtown observed “Cool To Be Kind” week with activities to encourage and celebrate acts of kindness. The school’s Character Education and Wellness Committee organized the annual program. The week began with a visit from author and motivational speaker Tom Thelen, who shared his
anti-bullying message, providing students with concrete strategies to prevent bullying and cyberbullying. Later in the week, students wrote appreciation cards to faculty and staff and thank-you letters to local veterans. In turn, teachers wrote water drop-shaped notes documenting random acts of kindness performed by
students since the start of the school year. They presented these “drops” to the students, who posted them on a large “fill your bucket” bulletin board displayed in the school cafeteria. Since last year, more than 100 students have been recognized for engaging in acts of kindness.

The children also dressed up as Pilgrims and Native Americans and performed songs about Thanksgiving in the school’s cafeteria. Parents were invited to partake, as they contributed all
of the food. The event was a culmination of the kindergartners’ studies on the first Thanksgiving.
Third graders in Diane D’Allesandro and Patricia Ammirato’s classes at Burr Intermediate School in Commack worked side by side to prepare for food and decorations for a Thanksgiving feast. As students moved from station to station they were guided by the many helpful moms, dads, and grandparents who came to help.
Parents and grandparents joined in, helping the students with many activities. At different stations, students chopped apples for fresh apple sauce, cracked eggs to make their own corn muffins, and assembled turkey centerpieces for their family’s Thanksgiving table, using an apple decorated with a
marshmallow head, cloves for eyes, and colorful gumdrop feathers. Students created “I am Thankful” placemats and beautiful holiday cards with sweet messages for our soldiers overseas. Each student personalized a card thanking the soldier and sending personal wishes. There is much to be thankful for at Burr!

Workshop Set December 10th, will focus on skills including decision-making and problem-solving, fatigue management, coping with anger and depression, and communication. In addition, the workshop will address safety in using prescribed medications, healthy eating, making informed treatment decisions and planning for future care. The program is evidencebased, developed by Stanford University to help
those coping with chronic illness to feel better, be less limited by their illnesses and spend less time at the doctor and in the hospital. The program will be held at Gurwin’s Lindner Residences, 50 Hauppauge Road in Commack. There is no cost to attend, but registration is required. Walt Disney World is the place to be for a vacation, or a celebration. Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida is a wonderful place comprised of four spectacular theme parks. The names are Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios and Epcot. Magic Kingdom is a magical place. There is so much to do. You can go visit the castle or stop and see the parade on Main Street. You can even take pictures with Disney princesses and characters. Next, we have Animal Kingdom where you can take a safari ride to see all of the animals from A-Z.

Then there is Hollywood Studios - it is my personal favorite. It is filled with music, love and happiness. If you want to see a great play or musical, the place to go is Hollywood Studios. Lastly is Epcot. Epcot is all about the future. The ride Spaceship Earth (also known as the big Epcot ball) is where you learn about the past and you can invent your own future. The parks are nice, but there is much more to Disney than the parks. There is horseback riding at Circle D Ranch. Then you have surrey bike riding at Saratoga Springs. You can also do arts and crafts at Saratoga Springs.
There are also horse drawn carriage rides at Port Orleans. Walt Disney also has special cuisine. Their food has real quality. One of the restaurants at Walt Disney world is the California Grill at the contemporary resort. At the California Grill, they serve food from all over the world. My favorite is their sushi. Then there is Bama’s at Animal Kingdom Lodge. At Bama’s, they serve some African meals and some American meals. So go visit Walt Disney World because Disney Vacations + Family = Excitement and Magical Memories

Personality Of The Month
The Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) has named Suffolk Community College Men’s Soccer Coach Frank Vertullo as its Personality of the Month for December. Vertullo, 34, of Babylon, coached the Suffolk County Community College Sharks to the National Championship last month, a repeat of his 2010 accomplishment. Entering the junior college Final Four as the fourth seed with a 19-4-0 record, Suffolk played number one seed and host, Herkimer Community College, on November 14th.
A twelfth minute goal by Romario Hulea was all the Sharks needed to avenge their 2013 loss to Herkimer in the National Championship game and advance, 1-0. The Sharks continued as underdogs in the national title game on November 16 against number two seed Richland Community College from Texas, who previously defeated them 5-2 in September. Joseph Lopez and Hulea scored for the Sharks and goalkeeper Jon Zapata, named championship game MVP, made six saves in the second half to preserve Suffolk’s 2-1 lead and secure the championship title. Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Shaun L. McKay said Coach Vertullo is an inspiration not only to student athletes, but to the College Community. “Coach Vertullo’s leadership, inspiration, and ability to motivate has helped deliver two National Championships to Suffolk County Community College by our very talented and accomplished student-athletes,” McKay said. “Congratulations,” he added. “There are so many factors that are involved in winning multiple national championships. Consistency, recruiting, experience and creating a family atmosphere within the program are the key components. The success of the program has also helped in the recruiting process of potential student-athletes wanting to leave home to play at Suffolk even without the convenience of campus housing. However, just bringing in talent is not always good enough, ” Vertullo, who was named Coach of the Tournament, said. “My student-athletes have always given me 100% and have done everything I’ve asked of them. The family
atmosphere we create makes the student-athletes want to perform for one another and they hold each other accountable. They also draw on my experiences from coaching in eight Final Fours in the last 14 years. Each year, we pull positives and negatives out of each Final Four experience and bring that into the next year’s tournament to further be prepared and to put the student-athletes and the program in the best possible position to succeed,” Vertullo said. As a player, Vertullo played in the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL), for the North Babylon Bulldogs and Massapequa TNT. Frank also competed for three years on the LIJSL Select Team and two years on the Eastern New York ODP. Vertullo played at Dowling College from 1997 to 2000 and was Conference Rookie of the Year, All-Conference three times, captain of the team for three seasons and starting center back. He also played for the New York Freedoms of the United Soccer Leagues (USL) in 2002 and 2003. Vertullo served as Dowling’s assistant coach from 2001 to 2006, helping lead the Golden Lions to four NCAA Division 2 Final Fours and the 2006 National Championship. Vertullo took over the Suffolk Community College men’s program in 2007 and has led the Sharks to five Region XV titles and two National Championships, been honored as Region XV Coach of the Year four times and NSCAA National Coach of the Year in 2010. Vertullo also won the New York Metro Intercollegiate Soccer Officials Association (NYMISOA) Sportsmanship Award in 2008.

Neighbor Pet’s Place ADOPT A SHELTER PET TODAY!
Christopher (“Chris”) March became Boy Scout Troop 125’s (Commack) 95th Eagle Scout on June 17th, and an Eagle Court of Honor, celebrating this achievement was held on November 29th, at the Commack United Methodist Church. Chris’ Eagle Leadership Service Project consisted of the clearing and installation of a new Boy Scout area, adjacent to the old Boy Scout area in Hoyt Farm Nature Preserve in Smithtown. The new area consists of four benches surrounding a fire pit. The benches are made up of natural locust wood, chosen for its strength against the elements. The fire pit is approximately 4.5
feet wide and is bordered by large boulders, which were found in Hoyt Farm. Chris said, “My Eagle project taught me that although the execution of a project is important, the planning portion is equally if not more important.” For his fundraiser, Chris held a car wash at Pep Boys (Jericho Tpke, Commack) where he raised enough money to not only cover the cost of his project but enough to allow him to donate $314 back to Hoyt Farm. Chris began scouting in first grade when he joined Cub Scout Pack 329 (Commack) as a Tiger Scout, and continued until he earned the Arrow of Light and ‘crossed over’ to

Boy Scouts. As a member of Troop 125 for 5 years, he has held various leadership positions including senior patrol leader, assistant senior patrol leader and librarian. Chris is also a Brotherhood Member of the Order of the Arrow, which is Boy Scouting’s national honor society. He earned a total of 29 merit badges (22 of which are necessary to obtain the rank of Eagle). “One of the biggest things the Boy Scouts have done for me is teaching me skills in leadership and planning. Now, I’m not saying that I’ve gone through all of this unscathed. I’ve learned all of this from being soaked on campouts, being frozen on campouts and getting lost on campouts,” said Chris. “But with the Boy Scouts, you can fail at something, and there will be others there to help you through it.” A junior at Commack High School, Chris is a member of the English Honor Society, Science Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society and is an International Baccalaureate Certificate candidate. Chris is planning to attend college and pursue his interests in biology and forensic science. He commented, “I am more than thankful for the friends I’ve made and for simply being a Boy Scout, let along an Eagle. I hope that others will follow.” The newest Eagle Scout is the son of Michele and Richard March and brother of Ryan. The March’s reside in Commack.
