Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone is inviting residents to enjoy the holiday season by joining celebrations and special events at several park sites around the county. “Suffolk County has many amazing parks and sites of historical importance that everyone can enjoy throughout the year,” the County Executive said. “With the arrival of the holiday season, this is a great time to explore these places and enjoy all they have to offer.” Among the special holiday events are: The Deepwells Farm in St. James will host the 19th annual holiday boutique from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., on December 12th-13th. Thirty artisans will display their work, including painted Santas, pottery, candles, soaps, ornaments, stained glass and jewelry, at the decorated 1845 Greek Revival farm at

497 Route 25A, St. James. The boutique supports the Deepwells Farm Historical Society. Visitors can tour the Sagtikos Manor Dec. 12th-13th to learn how American presidents celebrated Christmas. Tours run from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and reservations are recommended. Call 631.661.5169. Sagtikos Manor was built in 1697. The estate served as headquarters for the British Army on Long Island during the Revolutionary War. President George Washington stayed there during his tour of Long

Island in 1790. The estate is on Montauk Highway at Manor Lane, West Bay Shore. The Yaphank Historic District will be the starting point of a Christmas tour on December 12th, from 1 to 5 p.m. Visitors will meet at the first stop of the tour, the Swezey-Avey House on Coram-Yaphank Road in Yaphank, and go on to tour Holden-Foley House, Wittman-Pol House, the Yaphank police garage, the Hawkins House, the Mary Louise Booth House and St. Andrews Episcopal Church. Shelters Need You r Help

I would like to br ing some much ne eded attention to our local animal shelters. This past summer, I decided to volunteer at the Babylon Animal Shelter. I go there three days a we ek and walk the dogs that are there, hoping th at one day someone will co me in and take them home. Many of these dogs are large breeds an d very excited to see anyo ne that shows up to give them some love. To everyone, I say pleas e adopt a shelter pet (cats to o), and if you aren’t looking to adopt, you could volunteer to help mak e their stay at the shelter just a little bit bette r. • Get enough sleep Getting enough sleep can impact your heart health. The American Heart Association recommends adults get six to eight hours of sleep per night. Over the holiday, get into bed early to give yourself enough time to wind down after your day and to fall asleep faster and more soundly. Also, a recent sleep study

of teenagers found that greater variability in dayto-day sleep habits was associated with higher calories consumed throughout the day. Student Spotlight MY LIFE STORY SUBMITTED BY: FERNANDO BARRETO AGUILAR, AGE 12, BAY SHORE MIDDLE SCHOOL

Many people judge how I look and assume things about me that is totally wrong. I have lots of tales to tell. Even the people who think they know me aren’t even close. Let’s begin at the beginning. When I was born, I was named Fernando*. My mom was happy that she had another son. I was her third. Shortly after, my father started abusing my two brothers and was sent to jail. At the time, I was too young to know what was going on. Later, when I found out about it, I hated that guy. I don’t even consider him a good father because of what he has done. I learned to hate my own

name because I was named after him. I decided to use my creativity to rename myself. When I tell my tale to others and they laugh, do I feel bad? No, because words are words and they don’t affect me. My talent for writing was sparked by a close friend named Amy*. She is very kind toward others and a little shy. We have been friends for a long time; we respect and trust each other to the max. We both share the love of writing. At first I felt writing was useless work. After a couple of tries, I gave in and found it fun to write. I think it’s unique to express myself in words. My hobbies, besides writing,

Some people say, “You’ll be a bum on the streets.” I don’t listen to them because they’re the same ones who think drugs are good. After everything I’ve learned, there is no better mystery than life itself. What’s the point of living? It’s to achieve your life’s goals. My goal is to be a great YouTuber; I know I can.

to the store each year – they either A) pick out something “useful” like an appliance – toaster, vacuum, the big-screen TV they always wanted; or B) buy everything in sight to make up for their lack of shopping prowess during the rest of the year. Once the purchases are made, there’s the small matter of gift-wrapping. Some men don’t even attempt the impossible and instead settle for a large bow on its own; others give it a whirl and wind up with a mass of crumpled wrapping paper, covered in tape, with only about 75% of the box actually, you know, wrapped.

Talent, indeed. I used to think it was just my father who waited until Christmas Eve to shop, until I joined him one year and witnessed firsthand the wall-to-wall lines of men with a similar problem – how to complete all their shopping and still make it home in time for the holiday dinner. So, this Christmas Eve, if you happen to be out making some last minute purchases, don’t stress out – those men standing on line next to you are just getting started. Plus, they still have to wrap. Toys for Tots Donation Drive Westy Self Storage continues its support of the Toys for Tots Donation Drive for the 17th year. This drive will run until December 18th. Westy in East Northport is hosting this drive as the designated drop off location for donations. In addition to collection, Westy will also provide storage for the donations as well as assist with final delivery.

The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program collects new, unwrapped toys for less fortunate children in the local communities. A shiny new toy delivers the message of hope to needy youngsters. This act of kindness will help motivate the children to grow into responsible, productive, patriotic citizens and community leaders. LOCAL GIRL CAST - Ten year-old Lauren Zdanowski of Kings Park will appear as Fritz, Clara’s naughty little brother, in Frank Ohman’s New York Dance Theatre production of The Nutcracker at Hofstra University. Lauren is a sixth grader at the William T. Rogers Middle School and has been a student at the Ohman School of Ballet in Commack for six years. She will be part of a cast of 80 children, pre-professional and professional dancers who bring this classic holiday story ballet to life on the stage of the John Cranford Adams Playhouse.

Toys for Tots began in 1947 when the wife of Major Bill Hendricks, USMCR, handcrafted a Raggedy Ann doll and asked her husband to deliver the doll to an organization which would give it to a needy child at Christmas. When they realized that no such organization existed, they decided to start one. That Christmas, a group of Marine Reservists in Los Angeles collected and distributed 5,000 toys to needy children. That pilot program was so successful that the Marine Corps adopted Toys for Tots in 1948 and expanded it into a nationwide campaign and since then has distributed over 370 million toys to more than 173 million children. Honoring Our Veterans The entire Hauppauge School District community was pleased to host numerous activities to honor the men and women in the armed forces who bravely serve(d) our country both here and abroad. The Bretton Woods Elementary School’s faculty and students recognized veterans at their 10th Annual Veterans Day Assembly. Congressman Lee Zeldin was this year’s guest speaker, and he delivered a moving speech about the importance of recognizing U.S. veterans. On a more poignant note, among the service members was Ensign Charlie Lloyd who attended Bretton Woods and graduated from Hauppauge in 2011. Lloyd was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy in May 2015 and deployed one week later on the USS Forrest Sherman. He returned after six months in the Persian Gulf on November 7th, and returned to Bretton Woods to attend his alma mater’s Veterans Day Assembly. He was seated beside his Grandfather, Charles Lloyd Sr., who is a Marine Corps veteran. “It was a very proud moment for our family,” stated Mrs. Lloyd. “We are blessed to be from Hauppauge.” The Pines and Forest Brook Elementary Schools also held heartwarming Veterans Day Assemblies to honor family members and veterans from the community. up to the present day who spoke to students from 7th grade classes on up as well as to administrators and staff members. “We were fortunate to have all these veterans in one room together to share their history,” stated Social Studies Teacher Deborah Surian. “This allowed for a variety of perspectives from different periods of history for students to learn and ask questions about.” Surian also said that it was a “real treat’ to listen to Barbara Kruz, a gregarious WWII female Marine Veteran, who spoke of how women felt pride in their roles during the war. According to Kruz, “I am proud of what I did and I would do it again if I could.” Each of the veterans described his/her military experiences and shared how these experiences changed/affected their lives. Some of the veterans discussed PTSD and how prevalent this is when veterans return from combat to assimilate back in civilian life. rolling. The students placed notes requesting food and/ or personal care items into the shopping bags and distributed them to the homes of their friends and neighbor. They reached out for assistance to almost the entire Hauppauge School District community by the time they were done distributing the shopping bags. “Our initial expectation for donations was on the conservative side,” stated Crecca. “We only went out with a wagon to collect the shopping bags.” To their complete amazement, their friends and neighbors had filled the shopping bags to the brim, and some even had as many as four bags at their homes

waiting for pick-up. The students then had to incorporate cars to collect the donations, which totaled 1,393 pounds and filled up five SUVs/trucks! The students believe that it is really important to help people on Long Island because “we don’t realize how many hungry people there are out there. This food drive was totally community based – Long Islanders helping Long Islanders.” The students are looking forward to continuing their support and also to engaging more people to support Island Harvest’s critical initiative to help Long Islanders in need going forward.

Close to 300 Pines Elementary School students, alumni, parents, teachers, administrators and staff recently celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the school. Several hundred Pines Elementary School past and present students, parents and staff members enjoyed an evening chock full of food, fun and memories for the School’s Golden Anniversary Celebration.

Guests received a group assignment when they arrived at the entrance to visit several “stations.” Each station featured something different for the participants’ enjoyment, including: square dancing, a photo slide show; a student musical performance; a walk through the decades 1965 to 2015; studentcreated displays of Pines Elementary School and

assorted memorabilia representing 1965-2015. They also participated in an old-fashioned physical education class featuring square dancing. There additionally was a 2015 time capsule on display and participants were able to make alumni clay discs, which were fired in the kiln by the art teacher and displayed in the shape of a pine tree in honor of Pines Elementary School.

Blood Donations Needed The American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to end the year with real meaning by donating blood for hospital patients in need. Holiday activities, severe weather and seasonal illnesses, like the flu, can pull people away from their regular blood donation schedules. Summit a Success According to the American Cancer Society, in 2015 it is estimated that 231,840 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among women and men. Excluding skin cancer, breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer for women which means that 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer during her lifetime. The Fifth Annual Breast Cancer Summit recently took place to address these statistics and to open dialogue with cancer experts. The annual event is hosted by Long Island Plastic Surgical Group, PC as a free community service program and focuses on patient education, providing an overview of

the latest developments in detection, treatment and reconstruction. Hundreds of guests attended this year’s program which was hosted by Kristin Thorne, WABCTV Eyewitness News Correspondent. Jennifer Griffin, National Security Correspondent for Fox News Channel and breast cancer survivor, served as keynote speaker and presented a touching speech titled “Entering the Cancer War Zone.” “Fighting breast cancer is as much psychological as it is a physical fight. And the one thing I learned is that feeling beautiful through that process is very important and may even affect the outcome of the treatment,” explained

Griffin. For her efforts in the fight against cancer, Griffin received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the LI Breast Cancer Summit. The Breast Cancer Summit was created to assist those diagnosed with breast cancer, to bring together community and resources, and offer knowledge and support. The event attracts hundreds of attendees, including cancer experts, researchers, doctors, nurses, breast cancer survivors, and advocacy groups. The program covers such topics as innovative breast cancer treatment, the latest cancer research updates and care, and progress achieved in the fight against cancer.

The program was livestreamed for those who may not be well enough to attend the program in person. “It’s important to the practice to do our part and educate the community. We bring together patients, support groups, and medical professionals, and provide a public forum for learning and networking,” explains Roger L. Simpson, MD, FACS, president of Long Island Plastic Surgical Group. In 2009 Griffin received the news which would change her life and become the biggest battle she would ever fight. She was diagnosed with stage 3 Triple Negative Breast Cancer. After 17 rounds of chemotherapy,

a double mastectomy and radiation treatments, she was declared in remission. She is a strong advocate for breast cancer awareness. “Since my return to work after cancer, I have thrown myself into working with wounded warriors, especially amputees and those suffering from posttraumatic stress - perhaps we share a bit of common ground - scars inside and out....I may look fully healed but there are triggers that take me back to that traumatic time. Programs such as this Breast Cancer Summit are vitally important resources for those touched by this disease so we can learn what resources exist and how we can access them,” said Griffin. “I am

honored to be a part of such an important event that attracts leading experts who share insight and information with the public.” Griffin joined Fox News Channel (FNC) in October 1999 as a Jerusalem-based correspondent. The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) received a $12,000 grant from The Slomo and Cindy Silvian Foundation, Inc. for the Student Assistance Programs - Too Good For Drugs (TGFD) and Teen Intervene. of Suffolk’s mission is to offer affordable home ownership programs to hardworking families who are looking for a place to call home – a place where they can put their own nicks on the wall. This holiday season, Habitat has designed a

holiday shopping guide that gives back to the deserving families of Suffolk County. Habitat Suffolk’s Nicks on the Wall program allows givers to gift a variety of home essentials to future homeowners including a box of nails, windows,

Giving Back It’s the holiday season so families are getting set for decorating Christmas trees, menorahs, shopping, caroling plus receiving mail from non-profit organizations looking for donations. But the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA) is that rare non-profit group not looking for money and is actually giving it back during the holidays. Eastern New York gave a dollar back for every registered player to each respective league to use it as they saw fit for the benefit of their players. So the Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) received a check for $58,614 for their 58,614 players, the East Hudson Youth Soccer League

(EHYSL) received a check for $16,946, etc. “I stated that when I became President in 2010, we would bring fiscal responsibility to Eastern New York and I believe that our Board of Directors has done exactly that,” commented Eastern New York President Richard Christiano. “Our fiscal responsibility has now allowed us to give a rebate back for every player.” “This rebate further demonstrates the commitment of our Eastern New York state association to its member leagues,” commented LIJSL President Anthony Maresco. “East Hudson was very pleased that the Eastern New York Board

of Directors, when deciding how best to use its considerable assets, thought to share it with its members via a rebate,” offered EHYSL President Jim Purdy. “The Eastern New York leadership is to be commended for taking this action and our hope is that as long as the state’s financial status remains positive, this will become an annual event.” Capital District Youth Soccer League (CDYSL) President Tim Owens, whose league received a check for $10,035, added, “The CDYSL is very grateful and appreciative to Eastern New York for this money. We look forward to reinvesting these funds back into the soccer community.”

Seeking Crew Leader Habitat for Humanity of Suffolk is looking to fill an AmeriCorps Construction Crew Leader to assist with home builds throughout the County. Habitat, in partnership with AmeriCorps members, hopes to reach its goal of completing 12 new home builds. Habitat also anticipates to host at least two community events and will utilize members to spread the word about homeownership programs and encourage community members to get involved as volunteers on worksites or to apply to be family partners. The Construction Crew Leader is an integral

part of building homes and completes hands on construction tasks such as demolition, site prep, framing, insulation, drywall, flooring, roofing, finish carpentry and landscaping. The Construction Crew Leader works with new and gut rehab homes, as well as A Brush With Kindness (ABWK), Critical Home Repair (CHR) and weatherization projects. AmeriCorps members will gain valuable leadership skills, as well as career and life skills that translate directly into job experience. Fulltime members will receive multiple benefits including

a living allowance, health insurance, job training and personal and professional growth opportunities.
