Children’s Coats Drive Help a Child Keep Warm This Winter Youth of Ethical Societies (YES) is collecting children’s coats (used and new) until December 22 to be distributed to children in need through Ethical Friends of Children (EFOC), a volunteer program that has been providing clothing and children’s furniture to Long Island families for 36 years. Children’s coats, clean

and in good condition, should be placed in marked boxes in the shed behind the Ethical Humanist Society of LI building, 38 Old Country Road in Garden City. “Says Anitta Kittai, CEO of YES, “As the weather gets colder it’s important to remember that there are many kids who don’t have the security or comfort that a warm winter coat

Students Engage With Town Of Smithtown In Storm Drain Cleanup

Smithtown High School West marine science students have been discussing the importance of storm drain maintenance in keeping Long Island’s waterways clean. And on Nov. 18, the Town of Smithtown Highway Department paid a visit to demonstrate one tool in that cause. Teacher Kimberly

Williams’ students watched the Town’s “Super Sucker” truck remove debris from storm drains on school grounds. Students from the school recently had produced a mural surrounding one of the storm drains using environmentally friendly paint. Highway Department crew members Joe and

Matt remained after the storm drain cleaning effort to discuss the system’s connection to local waterways and the Long Island Sound. They also discussed career options. “They were great with the students,” Williams said. “And now our storm drains are spotless.”

On Saturday, October 2nd, the Smithtown Recreation Department held its 32nd annual Singles and Doubles Fall Horseshoe Tournament at Brady Park. This year we had 25 single horseshoe participants and 11 doubles teams participate in the event. The winner of the

Singles Tournament was Justin Flores with a record of 5-1, beating Peter Sikinger. Peter finished with a record of 4-2. John Kassay came in 3rd place. Husband and wife duo, John and Debby Kassay were the winners of the Doubles competition. They finished with a record of 6-1. Father and son

duo, William and William Whitehead finished in second place with a record of 4-2. Congratulations to all the winners and to everyone who helped make this event so successful. Hope to see everyone at the Spring Horseshoe Tournament.

10 Commack Students Selected to Attend Harvard Research Conference

Recently, 10 Commack High School students in grades 9-12 were selected to attend the 2021 Harvard Science Research Conference (HRSC). The HSRC is a two-day conference for exceptional high school students, hosted by Harvard University, that consists of a series of speakers, workshops, and mentoring sessions designed to encourage and promote interest in the natural sciences as well as research. In order to participate in the conference, students

must apply and are selected to participate after a competitive process. Commack High School students who were selected include Lakxshanna Raveendran, Flora Lin, Zeynep Tasoglu, Alisha Khan, Juliette Amram, Mehek Sawhney, Manya Khatri, Farah Raufi, Ishana Chadha, and Jin Ko. As part of the conference, an Innovation Challenge took place and three Commack students, Mehek Sawhney, Manya Khatri and Ishana Chadha were winners as part of the research team working

on the “Cryogenic Heart Preservation” project. Commack’s Zeynep Tasoglu’s study also won for the “Using Machine Learning for Schizophrenia Episodes” project. Commack Park Dedicated In Memory Of Beloved Huntington Veteran And Post Leader Commander

Suffolk County Majority Leader Susan A. Berland (D-Dix Hills) and her colleagues in elected office recently gathered with Mrs. Pat Amore, veterans and members of the Elwood and Commack community to officially rename Cannon Park at the crossroads of Veterans Memorial Highway and Jericho Turnpike in Commack in honor of Commander Fred Amore, Jr. At a recent General Meeting, the Suffolk County Legislature unanimously voted to rename the park “The Memorial Commander Fred Amore, Jr. Cannon Park” to recognize Commander Fred Amore’s dedicated service to veterans across Huntington and Suffolk County. Commander Amore was the longestserving Commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9263 Elwood-Commack and Cannon Park was near and dear to his heart as he worked to maintain the park for many years before his passing in February of this year. “Fred was beloved by his fellow veterans and his passing is such a loss for our entire community,” stated Legislator Susan A. Berland. “I am proud to rename this park, which meant so much to Fred, in his honor. With this fitting

tribute, we celebrate the life of a veteran, friend, husband and community leader who made Suffolk County a better place for his brothers and sisters in arms for generations to come.” “I want to thank everyone for coming to honor my husband Fred - I know he would be so proud. I would also like to thank Legislator Susan Berland for making this possible and Legislator Leslie Kennedy for all her help, as well as the Department of Public Works for installing the guardrails,” said Mrs. Pat Amore, widow of Fred Amore, Jr. “Thank you to Karen Breen and Gary Rosenthal for helping me pass this honor and thank you to John Wagner and Gary for their work in maintaining Cannon Park.” “I am happy to support the addition of veteran Fred Amore Jr.’s name to Cannon Park. This area is dedicated exclusively to our veteran community and it is appropriate that Mr. Amore be recognized for his dedicated service to his country and for his service to the park itself,” stated Legislator Leslie Kennedy. Commander Fred Amore Jr. was born in Brooklyn and moved to East Northport in 1961. In 1966 he graduated from Northport High School and went on to

study at Suffolk County Community College before being drafted into the United States Army in 1967. While in the Army, Commander Amore was an Infantryman and served with the 1st Aviation Battalion during the 1968 Tet Offensive, when North Vietnamese troops invaded the south. He was a helicopter door gunner, one of the deadliest and most crucial roles during the Vietnam War, and was awarded a Purple Heart for his service. In 1991 Commander Amore joined the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9263 Elwood-Commack, determined to foster pride in the service of Vietnam-era veterans. He rose through the ranks to become the Commander in 2001, a role which he held until his passing. Commander Amore coordinated Poppy Day fundraisers, the St. Patrick’s Day and Christmas dinners, the annual ElwoodCommack Memorial Day Parade, and with his wife Pat, worked tirelessly for the Marine Corps League Toys for Tots Program. Mr. Amore also served as vice chairman of the Veterans Advisory Board and Sergeant at Arms for the Town of Huntington and on the committee that selects military academy appointees.

Legislator Trotta Visits Diego Bower Bonvino Of Boy Scout Troop 888 As He Works On His Eagle Scout Project On a beautiful Sunday morning, Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta stopped to visit with scouts from Troop 888, especially Diego Bower Bonvino, who was working on his Eagle Scout Project, creating a sustainable garden at the Suffolk County Legislature in Hauppauge. A few years ago, the entranceway to the front of the building was refurbished, and another Eagle Scout candidate, Jack Haggerty also of Troop 888, did a landscaping project at the building

as well. Diego consulted on this project with Ken Phalen, Assistant County Architect, at the County’s Department of Public Works, who supervised his work and that of the other scouts and parents as they completed the garden. Diego held a car wash to raise funds to purchase plants, a tree and other supplies to create the garden. He has almost completed the requirements to become an Eagle Scout. “These scouts, their parents

and troop leaders did a fantastic job and you would think a professional landscaper did all of the work,” said Suffolk County Legislator Trotta. “I first met Diego when he and his brother participated in the Legislature’s Distinguished Youth Award and they both earned the Silver Award. I look forward to attending his Eagle Scout Court of Honor, and am confident that whatever he sets his mind to, he will achieve it,” added Trotta.

Administrators and board members from the Commack School District recently attended the 2021 National Blue Ribbon Schools Award Ceremony in Washington, D.C. in recognition of Commack High School earning National Blue Ribbon status. The district was notified last month of the high school’s selection in a letter received from the U.S. Secretary of Education, Miguel Cardona.

Board of Education President Steve Hartman, Superintendent Dr. Donald James, Principal for Leadership and Instruction Ms. Leslie Boritz, and Principal of Commack High School Ms. Carrie Lipenholtz were all in attendance at the ceremony to celebrate Commack High School’s extraordinary accomplishment. Commack High School was among a select 325 schools in the nation –

out of over 98,000 K-12 public schools and over 30,000 private elementary and secondary schools* in the country - recognized for creating safe and welcoming environments where students master challenging and engaging content. Speakers at the 2021 ceremony highlighted each school’s academic excellence and exemplary ability to keep students healthy and safe given the unique challenges of the past year and a half.

Smithtown High School West teacher Kimberly Williams wanted her marine science students to experience a personal connection to reducing consumption and waste as well as to leaving the environment a better place. “We had been collecting gently used school supplies as well as lost and found items during locker cleanout week each June,” Williams recalled. “We donated gently used items to the Family Service League as well as needy families in Smithtown.” One of the bags included sports gear. And that spurred what has evolved into an international effort to help the needy. “I immediately called my sister, Carolyn Ferguson, a physical education teacher at South Side Middle School in Rockville Centre, to see if she knew of any groups who might need them,” Williams said about the initial sports gear. “Our district’s Physical Education Coordinator Pat Smith also allowed me to give some old uniforms to Carolyn. She then delivered them to her assistant superintendent, who would bring them over with her when she volunteered in countries where the items were so scarce and the children were in need. Those sports items flowed all the way to Uganda.” When the endeavor generated media attention, Carisa Eye, a Smithtown graduate who was teaching and coaching out of state at the time, learned about the philanthropy effort and volunteered to help by donating uniforms and gear she brought with her as she returned to Long Island. She filled her car as she moved back to Smithtown. Fast forward to present day, and Eye — a lacrosse and field hockey coach as well as teacher in the district — continues

to pitch in alongside Williams. This week, more gently used sports gear was passed along from Eye to Williams for international distribution. Smith, now the district’s athletic director, continues to ensure that when there is any gently used sportsrelated item that has some life remaining, it becomes available to be shared with those in need. The group has now partnered with Samba 360, whose mission is to provide relief to disadvantaged

children, both domestically and abroad, through the collection of donated sporting and other recreational equipment. “We always look forward to hearing the stories of the friends we’ve made across the miles, the ways our students and staff have helped keep extra items out of the waste stream, and the good our gear is doing,” Williams said. “We hope to keep this ‘current of kindness’ flows for a long, long time.”

Autism FYI was founded by Dr. James Benjamin and his wife Joyce in 2014 to help advance awareness of the needs surrounding people with Autism. They accomplish this goal of theirs through a safety membership program offered by their organization that is called IRIS, as well as through training that creates community awareness about Autism and allows businesses to become “Autism Friendly Certified”, which allows them to create a more inclusive community for those with Autism. Please read on for detailed information about their training opportunities available! Engaging with someone with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) can be difficult for people unless they have at least a baseline knowledge of the disorder. Everyday Interactions with the Autism Spectrum Population is a comprehensive course for anyone and everyone who is working, volunteering, attending school, shopping or just out and about in the community and need to help recognize behaviors associated with ASD and safely engage for the good of all involved. Autism FYI’s workshops provide professionals, parents and community members the information needed to significantly support people on the autism spectrum in school, at work and in the community. They created this training course, which is available in person or online to anyone. In this course, you will learn:

ASD • Major developmental differences of ASD vs. neurotypical persons • To identify e s c a l a t i n g behavior and how to best respond • Communication difﬁculties and how to overcome them • How does Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD effect the behavior of a person with ASD) • How to engage a person effectively and appropriately you suspect has ASD • How to help coach/mentor a person with ASD on your team and engage them more effectively • How to engage a person with ASD who comes into your store, bank, daycare, community program etc. • How people with ASD make wonderful employees and how to hire and integrate them as part of your team • De-escalation techniques and behaviors to avoid • Effective communication techniques to help keep their anxiety level down • Strategies to help them cope with any situation Their trainings also have someone with ASD attending for role playing scenarios and interaction. Upon completion of the course, you will be more conﬁdent in identifying ASD behaviors, understanding effective engagement and communication techniques, and successfully interacting with someone with ASD. On November 6, fourteen teams from Long Island competed in the Ninth Annual Half Hollow Hills Invitational at Half Hollow Hills West High School in Dix Hills. It was the first time in two years that the event was held in person. The Invitational was presented by the Half Hollow Hills School District, with support from SchoolBusiness Partnerships

of Long Island, Inc. (SBPLI) DBA FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Long Island. This year’s winning alliance consisted of the following teams: Team #870 “Southold Team RICE” from Southold High School; Team #2872 “Cybercats” from The Wheatley School; and Team #2869 “Regal Eagles” from Bethpage High School. Runners-

up included Team #3950 “RoboGym Robotics” from North Shore High School; Team #5736 “Kingsmen” from Kings Park High School; and Team #1468 “Hicksville J-Birds” from Hicksville High School. This year’s challenge was INFINITE RECHARGESM, in which both alliances have two minutes and 15 seconds to protect FIRST City from approaching asteroids

caused by a distant skirmish in outer space. Alliances scored points by scoring Power Cells in the Power Port, completing both Rotation and Position Control and getting the Generator Switch to the level position. Additional points were scored by hanging the robot from the Generator Switch within the final 30 seconds of the match.

Josie Muratore Wins Smithtown Historical Society Essay Contest Continued From 10 Contest for the past 15 years. It is open to all 11th graders attending High School East and High School West as well as Commack, Hauppauge and Kings Park high schools and the Knox School and Smithtown Christian School. Mildred Smith helped found the Smithtown Historical Society and served as the organization’s first president. She possessed an intense passion for the history of Smithtown. As part of her five-page essay detailing Smithtown Elementary School’s

history, Muratore wrote: “Smithtown was in need of a new school to accommodate its post-World War II growing population. In 1948, the Smithtown Central School District held a vote to purchase 12 acres of the Charles D. Miller Estate, and groundbreaking of the new building began in December 1949. The design of the new building was made to accommodate the children and make them feel welcome, according to The Smithtown Star, which wrote about the 371 students who attended the first day

of school. “Every classroom was referred to as ‘outside rooms.’ Each room had a wall entirely of glass — a wall of windows, in other words, where the children could observe the environment, the weather and nature as it changed throughout the school year. In today’s time it might not seem as a big deal, but in 1950, it was a luxury to have students be able to look and feel outside of their classroom, as opposed to the claustrophobic and less stimulating traditional windowless rooms.”
