A
ccompsett Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District celebrated its 50th anniversary on November 22nd. Although the school opened in 1966, the faculty and students traveled back a little further, to celebrate the school’s 50th in the 1950s. Students had the opportunity to dress up and participate in many 1950s themed activities throughout the day. Pictured are several of the students getting into the spirit.

Westy in East Northport is hosting this drive as the designated drop off location for donations. In addition to collection, Westy will also provide storage for the donations as well as assist with final delivery. The U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program collects new, unwrapped toys for less fortunate children in the local communities. Taking Flight Hands-on learning activities via Project Lead The Way are in full swing at Nesaquake Middle School in the Smithtown Central School District. On November 23rd, seventh-graders in the Flight and Space elective course tested their projectbased learning activity of building hot air balloons by launching them in the school’s atrium. The seventh-grade
students learned about engineering, design and flight to get the background required to build and launch their balloons successfully. The teams of four have both individual and team responsibilities which are delegated by the team manager. Some of the resources available for research and design include laptops, whiteboxlearning.com and the Project Lead The Way
Power of One learning management system. Some of the lessons students participate in include virtually lighter than air vehicles, the four forces of flight, Newton’s Laws of Motion, Bernoulli’s principle, the history of flight and the Wright Brothers. All data, findings and sketches are recorded in students’ Gateway (engineering) notebooks.
The Hauppauge School District community recently participated in the Power of One 5K Family Fun Run and 1 Mile Run. Coordinated by the Wellness Committee, the Power of One Run is held annually in the fall and spring. The run kicked off in front of Hauppauge Middle School and proceeded through the
streets of Hauppauge. The top three male and female runners in each age category were presented with awards, and Hauppauge High School Senior Amy Petrocelli was named the 2016 Power of One Award recipient. “Petrocelli was selected for the Power of One award based on her ability to use her voice, her impressive
contributions to both school and community and her desire to make a difference,” described Teacher Carol Pacileo. According to Pacileo, “the Power of One Family Fun Run was created in 1997 to encourage healthy choices within the family and to provide an opportunity for families to exercise together.”

Students in Saint Cyril and Methodius School’s 4th and 5th grades participated in an 8:30 a.m. Mass the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, gifting the community with their song, lecturing, reciting Native American poetry and more. They also collected pantry items so important
to families in need, especially at this time of year, when everyone wants to be able to celebrate the holidays as best they can, during a time when gratitude is so crucial to finding everyday happiness. The food items contributed by classrooms throughout the school will go to SSCM’s Parish
Outreach Program in Deer Park. Local parishes and their volunteers are the lifeblood of parish social ministry on Long Island, where across the county, combined parish ministries include thousands of volunteers and serve as many as 75,000 people in need each year.
On Thanksgiving morning, more than 1,400 runners and walkers of all ages trotted through the scenic grounds of the Nissequogue River State Park for its 9th annual Turkey Trot for Kids and 5K Walk/Run for the Park. “All of the profits raised help to improve and preserve the historical and environmental assets
of the Nissequogue River State Park,” said Legislator Rob Trotta, whose district includes the park. Legislator Trotta has volunteered at this event since its inception – helping with setting up, parking, refreshments and cleaning up. The Reichert Family of Fort Salonga was the major sponsor of
the run/walk. Through the Reichert’s, IGA of Fort Salonga and East Northport provided the refreshments for the event. The Foundation is grateful to all of the volunteers and organizations that assisted in the planning and implementation of the run, as well as the Suffolk County Police Department for insuring a safe route.

Five Tips On Moving (NAPSI)—According to the U.S. Census Bureau, 12 percent of Americans move to new homes every year. The next time you’re among them, you may be able to save time, trouble and money when you choose a professional mover— you won’t have to worry about renting equipment, paying hidden costs, handling heavy or bulky items and being responsible if something goes wrong. Here are five hints to help. 1. Be wary of any
“guaranteed” estimates offered over the phone or online. Make sure you show the mover everything that needs to be moved, and get at least three estimates to compare. Avoid any that are too high or too low. 2. Check the company’s ratings with the Better Business Bureau and other consumer websites, and ask family and friends for referrals. 3. Make sure all agreements are in writing, and get a
copy of everything you sign, especially the bill of lading. Never sign any blank forms. 4. Ask questions if you don’t understand something, and make sure your mover has your cell phone number to reach you. 5. Find a certified professional mover. PUZZLE ANSWERS: Bretton Woods Elementary School students in Elia Figari’s and Danielle Sukoff’s fourth grade class recently shared the spirit of Thanksgiving with the residents at the Arbors Assisted Living in Hauppauge, New York. The students painted festive pictures on pumpkins, which the Arbors will use to decorate the facility for their Thanksgiving festivities. “This activity encouraged our students to be mindful of others and to be appreciative of all that they have and what they can give to make others
smile,” the co-teachers described. “Thanksgiving is a time to reflect. As we gather with family, friends and loved ones to enjoy our Thanksgiving dinner and the bounty of food at our tables, let’s take time to reflect on all that we have to be thankful for.” Bretton Woods students in class K-1 celebrated the holiday with Native American Day. Parent volunteers helped the children weave placemats, use symbols to decorate vests, make headdresses and thread necklaces. According to Teacher Danielle Mollica, “this was
a wonderful opportunity for the children to engage in hands-on activities to better understand Native Americans and their culture.” First grade students at Bretton Woods have been studying “Life Long Ago” as part of their current Social Studies curriculum. This study culminated in an “actual” First Thanksgiving Feast with all the holiday trimmings! “A good time was had by all as the students dressed up in costumes to enjoy their bountiful holiday meal,” described Principal George Gagliardi.
BACK IN TIME - Accompsett Elementary School in the Smithtown Central School District celebrated it 50th anniversary on November 22nd. Although the school opened in 1966, the faculty and students traveled back a little further, to celebrate the school’s 50th in the 1950s. My Little Christmas By: Jamie Lynn Ryan
Christmas has always been one of my favorite holidays. From when I was a child, there was something about the twinkling lights, the anticipation of a first snowfall, and of course the presents under the tree that evoked just a bit of… magic, really. All these years later, some of the mystery may be gone, but the sentiment remains the same. As this particular holiday season approached, it was difficult not to let some of the melancholy feelings seep in. This has been a year of multiple losses and sadness for my family, and somehow the thought of “celebrating” seemed wrong and, well, downright impossible. How to carry on traditions when so
much has changed… For me, even the prospect of decorating, a task I had always looked forward to with great enthusiasm, had lost some of its luster. Was it appropriate? Was it worth going through all the trouble of digging out boxes, climbing stepladders and assembling a tree when my heart wasn’t truly in it? I didn’t know. As the weeks passed and Thanksgiving came and went, I needed to make a decision; and so, I reached a compromise of sorts. Having recently had the privilege to inherit some of my grandparents’ more prized Christmas decorations – including several gorgeous, hand-painted ceramic figurines made by my grandmother – I decided it would only be right to display them.
And so, I set out to find that happy medium, of honoring all the wonderful memories I had compiled from years past – but not going overboard. I chose to keep it simple… white lights in the windows, greenery outside, and special emphasis on all those holiday tokens I had acquired from Grandma and Grandpa’s house. There will be plenty of years to go all out, to deck the halls from top to bottom with flashy colored lights and six-foot trees and tinsel and holly galore. But not this year. This year, I choose to focus on family – on those who are no longer with us, and on those we are still so lucky to be celebrating with. Here’s to remembering what’s most important at this time of year, and always.
