Holiday Season Helping Sick & Underprivileged Children! the beginning of what has become the year round organization, John Theissen Children’s Foundation. Since 1992, this organization has collected over 1 million new toys and have donated them to sick and underpriviledged children in over 180 hospitals and child-care facilities. However, this Foundation does more than just collect and distribute toys. They also provide hospitals and childcare facilities with therapeutic and recreational equipment, support families with financial assistance to defray medical expenses, fulfill patient’s wishlists throughout the year (for those 18 years of age and younger) and they assist sick and underpriviledged children in other ways that are needed. On December 5th at 6:30PM, John Theissen Children’s Foundation will be hosting A Night of Champions Holiday Gala! This Gala will feature one of New York’s biggest and best live auctions, great raffles, door prizes, gourmet dishes provided by 2nd Street Gourmet, desserts provided by Francesco’s Bakery and a VIP Lounge Meet & Greet with celebrity professional athletes. Admission is $50 and VIP admission is $350. To purchase a ticket, please visit

John Theissen Children’s Foundation began after their Executive Director & Founder, John Theissen, had stayed at Schneider’s Children’s Hospital in New Hyde Park when he was 17 years old. John needed to have brain surgery for a brain tumor that he unfortunately developed. The day he walked into the hospital he met a 7 year old girl named Tasha. She spent many hours with John for the next few days, always trying to make him happy. Tasha received very little family support, however she expected her family to attend a holiday party that was sponsored by the hospital staff. Unfortunately they did not attend. John was too ill to take her, so his family did. When Santa asked her what she had wanted she replied, “I would like a teddy bear for my friend upstairs.” John felt fortunate to be that friend. Tasha’s positive attitude and generous spirit inspired John. Once he got out of the hospital he wanted to help children just like her. In 1992, John held a toy drive during the holiday season to benefit children in local hospitals. During this first drive, he collected over 800 new toys in just 2 weeks! That was

New York State Champions Ari Kantorowitz, 17, is the forward for the Jericho High School Jayhawks soccer team. Ari Kantorowitz played his first season with the Jericho Jayhawks after transferring from Solomon Schechter School of Long Island in his senior year. Ari is the top goal scorer on Long Island for all public
high schools during the regular season and playoffs with 36 goals. Ari is also involved with the Young Judaea movement and volunteered in Charleston, South Carolina during a previous Christmas break to give back to the community. Last week, the Jericho High School team won
the New York State Championship Class A in Middletown, New York against Rochester with a 21-1-1 record. The Jayhawks had an incredible defense, goalie and the top goal scorer and assist leaders on their team. They also won their last 19 games in a row.
“Tender Years Treasury” A Children’s Holiday Shopping Spree The Smithtown Recreation Department and the Senior Citizen’s Department will cosponsor its award winning “Tender Years Treasury” program on Saturday, December 7th, from 10 A.M. to 1 P.M. This holiday shopping spree, for children in grades K through 5, will be held at the Eugene Cannataro Senior Center, 420 Middle Country Road, Smithtown. Featuring handcrafted gifts made by our local Senior Citizens, this unique event will give children the opportunity to choose that perfect gift for their loved ones. While Mom and Dad are enjoying
coffee and cookies in a waiting area, Recreation staff members will escort children through the gift area, where they will make their own purchasing decisions. Free gift wrapping by the Senior Citizens ensures that each present remains a surprise. Favorite activities of the day include craft making, cookie decorating and balloon sculptures. There will be an upscale boutique for adults and a handcrafted quilt raffle. Santa will also be visiting, so bring your camera and letters to Santa to put in our “Letters to Santa” box. Santa will be answering so make sure to include your
address!! The Tender Years Treasury, first introduced by the Recreation Department in 1982, earned a four-star Recreation review in 1988 and a National Creative Program Award that same year from the National Parks and Recreation Association. Each year the program allows our time honored citizens and young children the opportunity to come together to share the gift of giving during the holiday season. Winter Coat Drive For several years, Suffolk County Legislator Rob Trotta has been working with SMM Advertising in Smithtown to conduct a winter coat drive to benefit the residents of Suffolk County who are in need of warm winter clothing. They are collecting gently used or new coats, jackets, hats, gloves, mittens, scarves and new socks for infants, children, teens and
adult men and women. “As people prepare for the winter and clean out their closets or plan to give a new coat as a gift, it is important for all of us to help our fellow neighbors who need warm coats by contributing to this worthwhile drive,” said Legislator Rob Trotta. Donations of coats and other outerwear may be dropped off at Legislator

Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony On Wednesday, December 4th, 2019, the Town of Smithtown will hold its 4th Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony from 5PM to 6:30PM at Smithtown Town Hall. The annual Tree lighting ceremony is a fantastic community based event that includes live music, performances from our local school districts, delicious treats and a special guest from the North Pole, Courtesy of Smithtown Fire Department. Feature performances include the Smithtown
High School West Whisperettes Kickline, the Smithtown HS West Jazz Choir, the Great Hollow Middle School Chorus, and the Kings Park High School Orchestra. In addition, the town will serve as a collection site for the Smithtown Food Pantry during the event. Residents can help by bringing nonperishables like canned foods, boxed cereals and snacks, powdered milk and powdered baby formula. Entertainment for the
evening will include live music by DJ Just For the Record and Balloon Sculpting for kids of all ages by Animations. Cookies and Milk will be served, by the Town of Smithtown’s Recreation Department team. Fresh baked cookies have been donated by Lessing’s Hospitality Group and Garguilo’s Bakery. MINI MERRY MEATBALLS - “Mini Merry Meatballs,” courtesy of the Cattlemen’s Beef Board and National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, is sure to please. Paired with a cranberry barbecue sauce, these savory appetizers are bursting with flavor and holiday appeal. Presents may get much of the glory during the holiday season, but there is much to be said about the foods found throughout this time of year as well. During the holiday season, people frequently find that dinner invites, cocktail parties, office happy hour gatherings, and other opportunities for socialization are easy to come by. At the heart of these events are foods and beverages. Whether one is hosting a holiday soiree or plans to bring something to a potluck party, it’s helpful to have a list of fail-proof recipes at the ready. Tasting menus, bitesized treats and finger foods are always a hit at holiday functions - and this recipe for “Mini Merry Meatballs,” courtesy of the Cattlemen’s Beef Board and National Cattlemen’s Beef Association, is sure to please. Paired with a cranberry barbecue sauce, these savory appetizers are bursting with flavor and holiday appeal.

1 cup seasoned stuffing Preheat oven to 400 F. Combine brisket, ribeye, mix ground beef, stuffing mix, egg, water, garlic, 1 egg, beaten salt, and pepper in a large bowl, mixing lightly but 3 tablespoons water thoroughly. Shape into 24 1 teaspoon minced garlic 11/2-inch meatballs. Place on a rack in a broiler pan that has been sprayed with 1/4 teaspoon salt cooking spray. Bake for 13 to 15 minutes until the 1/8 teaspoon pepper internal temperature reads Cranberry Barbecue 160 F.
Sauce:
Meanwhile, prepare 2 teaspoons vegetable oil the Cranberry Barbecue Sauce. Heat oil in a 1/2 cup chopped white medium saucepan over onion medium heat. Add onions and garlic; cook and stir 1 tablespoon minced 2 to 3 minutes, or until garlic tender, but not brown. Add remaining ingredients, 2 1/2 cups fresh stirring to combine. Bring cranberries to a boil; reduce heat and simmer for 20 minutes, 1/2 cup orange juice or until cranberries burst and the mixture has 1/2 cup water been reduced to a thick consistency, stirring 1/3 cup ketchup occasionally. Remove from heat; cool slightly. Transfer 1/4 cup light brown mixture to blender container. Cover, allowing Mini Merry Meatballs sugar (Serves 24) steam to escape. Process 2 tablespoons cider until smooth. After serving as a U.S. Army Paratrooper in the 2 /509th Airborne Infantry, he pursued a career in the Aerospace industry for Grumman Aircraft and later Northrop Grumman. Working and raising a family did not leave much
time for art. Frank, now retired has more time for art and paints for fun and relaxation. His current focus is on portrait and figurative work, but also enjoys landscape and plein air painting. He has worked in all mediums, but oil paint is his favorite and he prefers realism over all other styles. Frank has exhibited in juried and group shows across long Island.
