NEW PRESIDENT - Dr. Davis Pollack, founder of Clubhouse of Suffolk in 1990, stepped down from his position as President of the Board of Directors after 24 years. Dr. Pollack oversaw the evolution of the organization’s growth from its origin to serving nearly 1,500 people per year. Clubhouse merged with Suffolk County United Veterans in 2012 and the Mental Health Association in Suffolk this past year. Black Friday. As I sit here writing my column from home at 11:15 p.m. on Thanksgiving night, my alarm clock is set for 5 a.m. tomorrow morning. Why, you ask, would I subject myself to the madness that has become a tradition for thousands of manic shoppers desperately scouring stores for the best bargains? Because it’s fun. Although, I will admit, I wasn’t sold on the idea until recently. Prior to my first Black Friday shopping experience, I was one who would wait until the week of Christmas to even begin, occasionally
even making a last-minute mall run on Christmas Eve. No list, no direction – just aimless wandering until the “perfect” gift caught my eye. I hated shopping and everything that came with it – the crowds, the long lines, the even longer return/ exchange lines… all of it. Well, the lack of preparation remains the same. Still no list, no real ideas to speak of… but I have developed a bit more tolerance for the shopping end of things. Perhaps now that I am older and have more means to show my appreciation to those I love, I see the value in putting a bit more effort into things.
Not that you will ever catch me in a store on Thanksgiving itself. The holiday is exactly that – a holiday – and should be celebrated and savored as such. Plenty of time to shop in the month following; beginning on Black Friday just seems to add a little extra excitement to the process. Call me crazy. Call me a convert to the madness. Whatever. And with that, I had better get some sleep. I have a long day of shopping ahead of me tomorrow. Enjoy your Thanksgiving leftovers, make your list, check it twice – and maybe I’ll see you on line at the store.
Leaving students with more questions than they had before she entered the classroom as a guest speaker is Audrey Bloom’s goal. This Smithtownbased attorney and counselor at law recently spoke to the animal science students at Harry B. Ward Career and Technical Center in Riverhead about animal rights and ethics. The students received printed materials
containing information about animal care and law, and engaged in thoughtprovoking discussion with Ms. Bloom, who presented them with a variety of scenarios and points of view to consider. For example, Ms. Bloom explained certain aspects of New York State animal law to students and asked if they understood. Then she detailed several situations concerning
the ethical treatment of animals and the outcomes based upon the law to open up dialogue on the topic and get students thinking about the complexity of animal rights law. She also provided them with a list of things to explore if they wanted to gather additional information on their own, such as the Animal Welfare Act, Animal Legal Defense Fund, and the Humane Slaughter Act.

For students who plan to pursue careers somewhere in this field, I believe that exposure to the subtleties of animal law are as essential as the technical skills they are currently working to acquire.”

Weekend Campout & Skills To help to whet the appetites of the Webelos Scouts as they learned about what to expect on entering their local Boy Scout Troop next year, the Matinecock District (Boy Scouts of America), held its 14th annual Webelos Woods event, as 27 Cub Scout Packs and 21 Boy Scout Troops assembled at Cathedral Pines County Park in Middle Island during an overnight camping trip. The Boy Scout Troops and Cub Packs from the Commack, Kings Park, and Hauppauge areas of Smithtown Township and from the entire Town of Huntington began the weekend event with an opening flag raising and ceremony. Saturday’s events had the 4th and 5th grade Webelos Scouts participating in instructions at various skill events and competitions. Scoutcraft knowledge and how-to’s were explained and demonstrated by Boy Scouts troops in the Matinecock District, and this was followed by hands-on experiences for the youths as they completed eleven Scouting skills stations and learned even more by participating at several other demonstrations. Boy Scouts taught and reviewed how to tie knots, as well as to whip loose ends of ropes, and the Webelos Scouts were able to cross a monkey bridge. They were able to complete some of the requirements for the Webelos Scout Readyman Activity Pin during discussions, instructions, and demonstrations for First Aid. After receiving proper building and safety instructions at the fire-building station on the various types and uses of fires (for cooking or heat or a general all-purpose type of fire-lay), the Webelos demonstrated their new knowledge by starting a fire and also burned a string at 18” from the base of the fire pit. They also watched demonstrations and did hands-on cooking at the campsite, sampling desserts (baked apples and stuffed bananas) and observed the troop’s dinner being cooked in a Dutch Oven. The Webelos Scouts were able to earn their Whitlin’ Chit cards (instruction on safety, the proper use, sharpening, and care of knives as they enter the Boy Scout program) by using a plastic knife to carve a bar of soap. The Webelos Scouts with their adult leaders, parents
or guardians visited the Boy Scout Troops at the various stations and their campsites to help them in their decision-making as to which troop to join when they become eligible to join a Boy Scout Troop. While the scouts were participating in the learning experiences at the various stations during the Webelos Woods event, two adult Scouting volunteers took part in the training opportunities by participating in the Youth Protection Training seminar that had been offered. The full day’s program concluded with a Saturday evening campfire program of skits and songs and a Wood Badge Beads presentation, the opportunity to participate at the Celebration of the Catholic Mass, a Jewish Scout Halvdahlah (end of the Sabbath Day) service, a Brotherhood Ceremony for 19 Boy Scouts who are members of the Order of the Arrow, as well as participation in the “made in the campsite dessert contest.” Closing ceremonies on Sunday morning included an interfaith “Scouts Own” service, presentation of a commemorative patch for each participant and a ribbon for the Pack and Troop flags. The winner of the “made at the campsite in a cardboard box oven” dessert contest went to Cub Scout Pack 406 (Melville) who baked their dessert in a box oven at their campsite. for almost a decade, they have opened the Whisper Vineyards Wine Boutique just in time to get the wines and gift baskets for Thanksgiving. The Whisper Wines, made by talented winemaker Eric Fry, are crafted with grapes that are sustainably farmed
and hand-harvested like the vegetables produced at the Borella’s Farm for over 50 years. The wines produced are in limited quantity because the family’s focus is on keeping fruit yields intentionally low to ensure the production of the best quality grapes.
The new tasting room will not only offer Whisper Wines, but also a selection of New York State spirits and beers for tasting. Artisanal cheese, charcuterie platters and gourmet chocolates will also be available, as well as a selection of wine accessories and

Semifinalist Named
Hauppauge High School Senior Allison Lee was named a semifinalist in the 2013 Siemens Competition in Math, Science & Technology – the nation’s premier research competition for high school students. Lee’s project title was “Mechanical Destruction of Bacteria using Graphene, Graphene Oxide, as well as Phase Separated Polymer Blends.” The project demonstrated that bacteria cells can be targeted and mechanically broken down in order to kill bacteria without the use of antibiotics or other drugs. “We are tremendously proud of Allison Lee who is the first Hauppauge student to be recognized in the prestigious annual Siemens Foundation C o m p e t i t i o n , ” stated Hauppauge Superintendent of Schools Patricia Sullivan-Kriss. “Allison will go on to
compete in the Intel STS and several other competitions this year. She also is working on publishing her research in conjunction with her mentor at Stony Brook University.” The 2013 Siemens Competition generated u n p r e c e d e n t e d participation, showcasing students’ growing interest in science, math and technology subjects. A record 2,440 students registered for this year’s competition and a total of 1,599 projects were submitted for consideration. “These incredible students have invested significant time and energy to advance research and exploration in critical fields,” said David Etzwiler, CEO of the Siemens Foundation. “I commend all of the students for their outstanding achievements.”

captured the attention of the Council for Prejudice Reduction, Tilles Center, RFK Foundation, among others and ultimately led to the launch of the Inaugural “Stage the Change, Theatre as a Social Voice” Conference, which was held on November 20 at the Tilles Center for Performing Arts in Brookville, New York. “’Stage the Change, Theatre as a Social
Voice’ was sparked by my students’ vision and passion to work together toward the common goal of confronting and challenging social justice issues through the power of theatre,” described Hauppauge Theatre Teacher Ruth Pincus. High school students from Hauppauge, Smithtown, Half Hollow Hills, Wyandanch, BellmoreMerrick and Rockville
Centre School Districts; college students; educators; guidance counselors; social awareness clubs; youth groups; parents; theatre and not-forprofit professionals and community members attended the program. The event engaged attendees and inspired them to become voices of change – addressing the spectrum of social and emotional literacy issues, including

bullying, tolerance, diversity, test anxiety and beyond. “Staging this change has been another lesson in the power of passion,” stated Pincus. “Arts education becomes more and more important as we look for voices to speak loud and clear – ringing on well beyond our performances. Passing this gift of ‘voice’ on to students through our schools is imperative.” Nationwide, more than 3.2 million students are victims of bullying each year. Alarmingly, harassment and bullying have been linked to 75 percent of school-shooting incidents. The National Bullying Prevention Center has found that students can be especially effective in bullying intervention. More than half of bullying situations (57 percent) stop when a peer intervenes on behalf of the student being bullied. It is incumbent upon students, parents, educators and communities to responsibly address bullying as well as all the full spectrum of social and emotional literacy issues in schools, online and in communities.
