Veterans Honored St. Johnland Nursing Center honored 28 of its residents who are veterans of World War II and the Korean War at a special luncheon. They were joined by the great grandson of resident Ray McLaughlin who gave each veteran a small American flag. This followed a short prayer service and formal dedication of the day. St. Johnland’s staff is honored to recognize the valuable contributions of these veterans, and displayed individual posters that listed all their life accomplishments.

Creative Influence Smithtown High School East art teacher Tim Needles was recently interviewed by the Talks with Teachers podcast, which provides valuable insight into cutting-edge practices to help educators enhance the classroom experience for their students. Needles covered a wide

range of areas during his segment, including how technology is influencing art instruction, why art should be a vital part of a student’s experience, and how he connects with his students, critiques them and inspires them to collaborate. “In an art room, I am able to get a kind of

The Harry Report By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I was recently asked by a longtime friend and reader of this column for an update on “Harry.” For those who may have missed Chapters I & II, Harry is my slightly psychotic goldfish, purchased for all of 17¢ to serve as a “friend” to another fish I had won at a local carnival. Well, one week later, “Harvey” the carnie fish was floating upside down and Harry was riding solo. Now, nearly two months later, he is still enjoying his reign of the fishbowl,

alternately cowering behind (or amongst the branches) of his tree, and darting madly from one side (do round bowls have “sides”?) to the other, occasionally clunking into the glass as he zigs when he should have zagged. Hopefully, there hasn’t been any permanent brain damage. It’s difficult to tell for sure. One of his favorite pastimes seems to be watching me cook. As I prepare the food on the counter, he eagerly watches, as if hoping for a morsel to taste. I suppose it would be a nice change

from his dried flakes, although he does manage to suck those down with the ferocity of a small, finned Hoover®. So that’s the update on Harry, for all who care to know. Hopefully, he’ll survive the holiday season and ring in the New Year with us all. Who knows, maybe Santa will even bring him a new fishy friend if he’s good! Although, based on the last experiment in cohabitation, perhaps I should leave well enough alone. ‘Til then, Happy Holidays from Harry.

Congratulations to the 16 Smithtown Central School District students who recently participated in the Suffolk County Music Educators Association’s 34th Annual Day of Tuba and Euphonium, hosted by Nesaquake Middle School. More than 200 tuba players from schools throughout Suffolk County participated in workshops and performed in a special concert led by guest artist Dr. Aaron Tindall, the assistant professor of tuba and euphonium at Ithaca College. Dr. Tindall has served as principal tubist of the Iceland Symphony Orchestra and the Aspen Festival Orchestra and as a soloist is a two-time finalist in the prestigious Concert Artist Guild Competition, a Grammy Award nominee and a Global Music Award winner. SCMEA’s Day of Tuba and Euphonium provides an opportunity for select students to learn from a master tubist, experience playing in a unique setting and hear other outstanding performers from all levels on these often less-celebrated instruments. Smithtown Tri-M Music Honor Society students were on hand to help out as well.

LI EAGLE SCOUT - Local Long Island Eagle Scout, Edwin McCray of Troop 343, is shown standing along side a pergola and swing he had build at Angela’s House in Stony Brook. Edwin volunteered his time to work on this project for his Eagle Scout troop. He donated his time and hard work on the project as a way to give back Angela’s House, a local nonprofit organization that assists families caring for children with special health care needs who are medically fragile, chronically ill or suffering from a life threatening illness. Edwin built the pergola and swing for the families and children who reside in the home, as a place of peace and happiness for all to enjoy.

Launching Change Broadway Producer Tom Kirdahy, Broadway Director Sheryl Kaller and Playwright Dominique Morisseau were among the professionals who joined with Hauppauge High School’s theatre students on their mission to use their creative talents to become voices of social change at the second annual “Stage the Change, Theatre as a Social Voice” Conference, which was held on November 21st, at the Tilles Center for Performing Arts in Brookville, New York. About 350 students, educators and administrators from approximately 15 Long Island high schools participated in the 2014 Conference. “Once again, the success of ‘Stage

the Change’ confirmed that this event engages young people and inspires them to become voices of change,” described Hauppauge High School Theatre Teacher Ruthie Pincus, who founded the event. “’I didn’t realize just how powerful theatre can be as a tool for change on so many different issues.’ ‘It made me feel important for doing theatre’,” were just some of the comments “Stage the Change” participants shared with Ms. Pincus. In addition to Kirdahy, Kaller and Morisseau, Director of Education and Outreach Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS Joe Norton; Education Director, Tectonic Theatre Project Matthew Freeman; Ron Russell, EPIC Theatre

Ensemble; and others served as Conference participants and/or workshop panelists. “We were fortunate to have so many professionals willing to share their experiences with the students,” said Ms. Pincus. “I believe our speakers and panelists were equally impressed, as one told me ‘that what we were doing was really important work and essential’.” “Theatre programs can be catalysts for change in school districts and communities,” described Pincus. “By bringing kindness and dignity to the forefront through theatre, students will be empowered to make a difference. If theatre is our art form and means of expression, it becomes our most powerful voice.”

Boy Scout Troop 125 assembled several Thanksgiving baskets with traditional Thanksgiving fare, including a gift certificate to purchase a fresh turkey, gravy, stuffing, corn, cranberry sauce, string bean casserole, corn bread, brownies, and apple juice. The baskets were delivered

by the Boy Scouts to local families in need. Boy Scout Troop 125 meets every Tuesday from 7:30-9:00pm at the Commack United Methodist Church (486 Town Line Road, Commack) and is open to boys ages 11 through 18 residing in Commack, Huntington, Dix Hills,
